We had booked a room tonight at this pub as we were travelling down for Polar express, unfortunately because of the storm as we live in the south west we are in a red zone and unable to travel as it is unsafe. I emailed the watermans arms last night no reply….i then rang to chase this up at 630 tonight due to no response and found the young girl I spoke to totally unhelpful and frankly rude! They said because we hadn’t given more than 24 hours notice they would charge us ,even though I had emailed the night before so I asked if they could move the booking to jan or feb so we wouldn’t lose the money she said no as it’s policy and wouldn’t even check. Then questioned why I was calling at 630pm when I should have checked in at 3pm….i said because I had emailed you last night and was waiting for a response again frankly a rude response which only added to my frustration! The lady then said I am looking at the inbox I have no email from you when I explained which email address I had sent it too as per the website her response was “oh I haven’t checked that one yet?!” Maybe check your email inboxes before accusing your customers of lying and not sending an email, where is your compassion and customer service?! I explained on the polar express thread on Facebook there were plenty of people who had booked hotels in the local area for tonight and couldn’t travel and the hotels had moved their bookings. Where is the watermans arms goodwill and kindness it is Christmas after all?! I explained I had been made redundant and we really couldn’t afford to lose this money and with it being Christmas could they check if we could move it as to not lose the money, she was totally inflexible wouldn’t even look at other dates in the next month or two for us. I understand the storm is not their fault but it is not our fault either, it’s not enough that our 5 year old daughter and ourselves are absolutely devastated we couldn’t travel and she missed the polar express and seeing Santa which we were all so looking forward to , but the fact they wouldn’t even look at moving the booking is just mean and nasty. Instead I was greeted with comment from the receptionist such as we have couples who have travelled from London why can’t you, first of all rude…..secondly check your geography London is in the south east we live in the south west with severe weather warnings in place. So thank you for ruining our weekend further and our Christmas you could have easily offered more empathy and looked to help your customers instead hide behind your “policy” and instead of trying trying to help your customers and make an awful situation better like many other hotels in the area have done. My advice avoid avoid avoid! If you want help or empathy from them in an unexpected situation forget it! You have made an awful weekend even worse your lack of empathy, flexibility and total lack of customer service is astounding and especially for a family who have already had an awful weekend, you could and should have done so much more to handle this situation better if other hotels and B&Bs can move bookings and be helpful why can’t you? Because you choose not too which is very disappointing and sad, Christmas should be the season of goodwill clearly this doesn’t apply to the watermans arms!

Decent pub/hotel, staff were nice. Food was good although those triple 'nuked' chips were very questionable! The only downer was that the WiFi was not working for the whole time we were there. This also meant that the TV in the room was also not working and the staff were unable to connect it to any analogue channels. The lack of WiFi combined with the absence of any mobile signal in the area meant we were unable to connect with family which was unsettling as there were some ongoing issues which we needed to keep in touch with. Some contact with the hotel to pre-warn us of the situation would have been helpful.

It’s an authentic pleasant south Hams pub that’s traditional and unpretentious. We booked in for one night. The rooms are comfortable and adequate. Nothing fancy and plenty of dog walkers. Booked in for Saturday evening meal. A proper boozer with regulars at bar and a nice dining area. Good choice of local ales and wines. I had the mussels which were perfect and reasonably priced My wife had a pasta dish which was again very good. Service was spot on My ideal sort of pub. Would stay again. Only slight downside was it was end of September and slightly chilly in pub. One of the wood burners going would of made it perfect

Whilst out exploring South Hams with friends who live near Plymouth, they took us to The Waterman’s Arms for lunch and midday beverages. They said it’s a spot they’d always wanted to try - and they tell me they’ll be back with their next group of visitors. Featuring a fabulous patio alongside Bow Creek - as well as a patio off the bar (on the other side of the street) and tables indoors - there’s plenty of seating. We were lucky to snag a spot with an umbrella on the creekside deck on a beautiful sunny day. We ordered inside, grabbed our drinks and then the serving staff brought our food out to us. As a vegetarian, the “halloumi burger” with portobello mushrooms, roasted peppers, lettuce and tomato caught my eye - served with fries and coleslaw. The burger was scrumptious! Two of my friends shared two starters: the baked Camembert (high praise but they said they needed two more pieces of bread to be able to eat all the tasty melted cheese) and the cuttlefish. Our other friend had a chicken and bacon baguette. Those three dishes were served with side salads. Ketchup, mayo and vinegar, along with salt & pepper, cutlery and napkins, were on a side table on the patio. Beers all around. Drink and food prices weren’t cheap but they weren’t overboard either. There’s a car park with ample parking. The food was tasty and not overpriced. The serene atmosphere is what puts this spot over the top.

Unfortunately, although I left a positive review for how welcoming and the new chef improving the food, it seems the owners, palmers brewery have managed to remove my heartfelt post , maybe because I mentioned that in my view, I thought that the palmers beers were somewhat average..... I find this ability to remove constructive criticism on trip advisor a little worrying although at my age, very little surprises me especially in this digital age of companies chasing perfect reviews and not accepting honest reviews from us, the punters who are basically paying the palmers board... Anyway, to reiterate, I feel that the watermans arms is well worth a visit whether you enjoy their beers or not ! Sincerely.... David D.

We were made to feel most welcome and service was attentive, friendly and relaxed. Our food (lunchtime on a Saturday) was truly excellent; delicious, plentiful and fairly priced. The landlady and her staff took time to genuinely engage with our family and we had a brilliant time - thank you. Very highly recommended. During our recent visit to Ashprington, we had the pleasure of dining at the Watermans Arms, and it was an experience worth raving about! From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that made us feel right at home. First and foremost, let's talk about the food – simply outstanding! Under the skilled hands of the new chef, Gordon, the menu has undergone a delightful transformation. Every dish we tried was a culinary masterpiece, bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. Gordon's innovative approach to traditional cuisine truly shines through, and each bite was a delightful journey for the taste buds. But it's not just about the food – the staff at the Watermans Arms are the true stars of the show. Katy, Mia, Jac/Josh, Angel, Leah, and Sarah went above and beyond to ensure that our dining experience was nothing short of perfect. Their friendly smiles, attentiveness, and genuine passion for their work added an extra layer of charm to our evening. In addition to the exceptional dining experience, we also had the pleasure of staying at the Watermans Arms, and it was a decision we didn't regret. The accommodations were cozy and comfortable, with all the amenities we needed for a relaxing stay. Waking up to the tranquil surroundings of Bow Bridge was the perfect start to our day. Overall, our experience at the Watermans Arms was nothing short of extraordinary. Great food, great stay, and great company – what more could you ask for? Whether you're a local looking for a new favourite dining spot or a traveller passing through Ashprington, do yourself a favour and pay a visit to the Watermans Arms. You won't be disappointed! 🌟🍽️🏡

This place is amazing, from the premises themselves are old and lots of history as part of it used to be a prison. The staff and owners make the place, you enter as a guest and leave as a friend. We were so welcomed in by them and the locals, buying us drinks and the like. I don’t think i have ever stayed anywhere so welcoming. The location is amazing too as its situated right on a riverside, the name gives it away. Such a peaceful place and at night with the windows open you can hear the river running and the wildlife. I left feeling well relaxed and not really wanting to leave. The food is also staggering, you won’t be leaving hungry here. Top quality breakfast and plenty of it, Toast and fruit and cereal are available on tap, Jams and other condiments. The food in the Bar at night was also fantastic. I had fish pie one night, one of the specials, huge chunks of fresh fish and a mash to die for. Other meals were also out of this world, I tried the Lasagne and the scampi and the good lady had Burger on night and the other asked if they could do her some cheese and salad. Nothing was too much bother for these guys. Its such a dog friendly place too, our Akita just plopped herself down in the bar and the guys were just stepping over and round her, never complaining. They gave her sausages at breakfast and mad such a fuss of her. I tend to judge places on how they treat my dog and those are the places that get my business. This place will be getting my business for a very long time to come, I can’t rate it highly enough. The room was huge and looked out onto the garden, spotlessly clean and every kind of item in the room that you could need. The bed is so comfy and I slept better there than I have in a long time. Cracking shower and plenty of tea and coffee, if it’s not enough just asked for more. It has a small flat screen TV and Freeview box. Free WIFI through out the property. Massive shout out to Sarah, Katy, Leah, John, Linda and Mo who made our stay so extraordinary so much so that I have booked 3 rooms later in the year to take the whole family down.

This is like a trip back to the 1980s, and not in a good way. The pub is over-lit, bright electric lamps all over the place. The night we were there (December) it was freezing inside, made worse by the fact that the bar staff had allowed the small fire to go out, and their attempt to relight it filled the bar with acidic coal smoke. Yes, there's an open fire, but it is only in one tenth of the bar, and the bar is so small that there's nowhere near it that you can sit, so it's pretty useless. Food was utterly dreadful - I had a sort of reheated vesta curry, a dollop of brown slime over some warmish rice, actually quite stomach turning. There is a much nicer gastro pub a quarter of a mile up the road. The bedroom was OK, ish. Reasonably clean, certainly warm, bed a normal (small) double, linens old and rather cheap and nasty. Failed in the two key requirements of being quiet (not, the cellar fan outside the window was left on all night) and dark (not, the pub security light was also left on all night). Conclusion - avoid.

A truly horrendous experience I took weeks to get over. The location looked idyllic which it was but everything from there on was just terrible. From indifferent management and staff more interested in sitting out the back/communal entrance path with cigarettes on the go to our room which was poor, noisy overlooking a beer garden and external shed/pizza kitchens’ extraction unit. With a stiflingly hot room and no air flow we had to have windows open, but we could not sleep because of the racket - that was when you weren't swatting mosquitoes invading from the river across the road sneaking in the open windows. Then we have the room and en-suite bathroom itself liberally covered in black mould, just appalling I needed antibiotics on my return for a chest infection (don’t know if it was connected) We were booked and paid to stay 3 days we left on the second - not that anyone noticed we had left or contacted even though we had pre-booked. As an aside - good luck escaping in the event of a fire if you disabled - see pics.

Its in a beautiful setting right by a river and has a nice xarpark. Lovely on a summers day to sit by the river with a drink I should imagine. Inside it was very tired admittedly it is very old but it really wasn't inviting at all. We all ordered fish and 'triple cooked' chips. What a disappointment, the chips were very obviously frozen chips, peas frozen peas, the fish batter was soggy, all in all it was awful. We ordered a pudding as we were still hungry and they were OK. The Waterman’s hasn’t just got the perfect location, it is also the most welcoming and frankly perfect place you could ever hope to stay at. I have stayed here twice over the past year having first known the pub from holidays to south Devon as a child. Once with my fiancé in July and again last week with both my fiancé and mum. Every time we come we feel like part of the family thanks to Leah, Sarah and the rest of the team. It is a beautiful building with true character, unlike all the soulless gastro-pubs back home. The rooms we had on both visits were lovely, comfy beds and everything you could possibly need for a wonderful stay. Breakfasts are flawless, especially the full English which sets you up perfectly for a busy day exploring south Devon. Coming back in the evening and sitting by the river with a glass of wine is the perfect end to a day, or by the roaring log fire if you visit in the colder months. The Waterman’s will forever be special to us as we got ended here back in the summer. We consider this pub our true “local” despite living a four hour drive away and we look forward to coming back many times again. Stopped for a quick lunch. The food and bread was absolutely 5 star. The IPA was delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Very good value too. I had been in Scott’s of Mayfair the day before and I preferred this. It’s so good it’s convinced me to move to Totnes 😀

Stopped here for supper after a walk on the beach. It was a super friendly, warm welcome from the start and it was very dog friendly! The food was absolutely beautiful! Even the side salads were really vibrant and had a wonderful, light, really tasty dressing, so good I ate it all! I had garlic crevettes to start and mussels to follow. Both were amazingly good but the mussels were probably THE best I've ever had, served with chunky slices of really fresh, good brown bread. My friend had squid to start and good old fish and chips. I had to try some of course and the batter on both starter and main was so light, very crisp and hugely tasty! I wish I could have had a pudding too but I was just too full! The bar snacks look fab too if you just want a quick drink and a bite to go with it...wish I lived locally! Even my little border terrier, Holly was impressed by this beautiful, friendly place as she was given little bits of sausage in a dish! All in all a fabulous place to visit and already planning to visit again some time. My only complaint is that I don't live closer! Thank you so much to Jamie, Andy and the fabulous chef! Will be back X

Service was fantastic, staff were lovely, however the food was mediocre and in some cases not as described. Wouldn't have been too bad if it was reasonably priced but it wasn't. No veggie option in main meals either so our veggie had a choice of a veggie breakfast or a jacket potato. He opted for the breakfast which was very cheap frozen stuff coming in at a whopping £12:50 plus extra for extra hash browns as it only comes with one. The rest of the food was ok but obviously bought in cheap frozen (my pie was obviously frozen and not home made fresh as advertised - that being said it tasted nice just £15:00 fit a frozen our is excessive). Overall, at £63 for 3 lunches of cheap frozen food left us feeling ripped off.
