Dolphin Inn in South Hams

Oh my word! After decades of Sunday dinners in a pub, all 4 of us agreed this was the best Sunday dinner we’ve ever had! The lamb & beef were cooked to perfection, as well as roast potatoes & Yorkshire puddings there were no less than 8 different vegetables cooked properly, nothing soggy! After a good break we managed to share 2 sticky toffee puddings between us which again exceeded expectations. We were gutted that the kitchen wasn’t open every day of the week because we certainly would love to try everything else on the menu! The locals who clearly love their pub were friendly & we didn’t feel we were invading their special place.

The food was good pub grub but when I asked for some tap water sadly the bottle was full of mould!!!! See photo.It doesn't give you confidence on the hygiene rating and the obvious neglect by the staff.

We are staying in Newton Ferrers for a few weeks and love the Dolphin. It’s a lovely cosy pub very popular with the locals who have made us feel very welcome. They are a great crowd and the landlord and staff are so friendly. Will definitely return as the food is amazing.

I'll start it off with large portions of mussels the 3 of us must of clear Devons seas of mussels 😋 very popular with the locals so would be advised to book a table ahead of time if your eating nice food & very nice people. 👍👍👍

Whilst on holiday we decided to visit the Dolphin. It is situated on the banks of the river Yealm in the beautiful Newton Ferrer. Every is friendly and welcoming and easy going. The food was amazing whoever the chef is they obviously take great pride in the food they produce it was delicious with very generous portions at reasonable prices. I would highly recommend. Also they do a great selection of beers and spirits. Thank you for a very pleasurable experience

Ok for a drink pub, we wouldn’t eat there again tbh. The mussels were good. So I’d have those. Apparently I have to keep on writing? Good views great place to have a drink, especially when the sun is shining. Nice atmosphere

It is the only pub in Newton Ferres and it is well worth a visit. I have had a meal there and I will be certainly going for another. It is well worth the trek down to the establishment with great views of the estuary.

Great location overlooking the water. Quite pricey but that'd be acceptable given the location if the food and service were good. Unfortunately the food was no better than OK and service was slow enough that we skipped desert and coffee. Would happily stop in for a beer on a sunny evening, but would eat elsewhere.

We chose to sit inside because of the river but had a drink before had with its glorious view. Never cease to amaze. Friendly knowledge staff send the food was plentiful, balanced and delicious.

We were on holibobs so perhaps slightly biased and the weather was perfect. This little pub has some of the most amazing views. The food was great. The service was great. Overall I'd give it 10 out of 10.

A 'real' pub with cosy character overlooking the estuary with good food. Staff were friendly and polite. It was a warm sunny day and we sat out on the higher of two sunny terraces outside the front of the pub. The view of the estuary was amazing and seating was comfy. There weren't many people, so it was quiet and so relaxing. In summer I guess it will be very busy but in a fun, holiday way. It's that sort of village. Highly recommended. My only two suggestions are that the toilet needs a little TLC & should be cleaned of black mould in some places, but I appreciate this a very old pub. Also the slate floor of the terrace should be cleaned of spillage marks. The pub has been popular for years but a little TLC would help to keep it so.

What a great little pub. Had a Drink and a Pasty here on Thursday then had a table booked for Sunday Lunch which I have to say is one of the best Sunday roast we have had. Every bowl and plate was clean. Spent all afternoon here, never felt like we were being rushed. It's advisable to book, the staff are welcoming and up for a bit of banter.

Nice little village, the pub gathers people watching rugby when I was there , friendly atmosphere. Nice views for walking around the place too

Lovely traditional pub with a roaring fire serving decent food and local ales. Perfect. Sitting outside on the terrace in the summer isn't bad either.

Lovely bar staff, really friendly and helpful. Beautiful little pub in a pretty little harbour with outside seating looking o et the estuary. Absolutely rubbish if you are vegan though! Nothing on the menu and the chef was unwilling to cater for me. Shame as I wouldn’t go back or recommend for this reason but the pub itself and the bar staff were lovely.

Had dinner here twice during our week in newton ferrers. Really enjoyed the food both times. We all had the seabass the second time and was delicious. Service was very quick and friendly.

The atmosphere and food are second to none. Last night i had sea bass which was the best I've had. My hubby had the muscles which were also fantastic. Can't wait to try the thai curry. Chef certainly is very good indeed.

Just been here for an evening meal, the quality of local real ales and local find is fantastic, plus the food is amazing, we both had the sea bass, and it’s not overpriced at all, fatatastic service friendly staff, breathtaking views, lovely friendly locals, if your ever down this area, be sure to visit this place, an absolute gem of a place will certainly come again

Great spot, lovely place. The hamburger with gluten free bun was startlingly good. Believe me, that's very rare.

If your staying in Noss Mayo make the effort and visit The Dolphin Inn for the best beer in the area. Wait for low tide and walk across the estuary it’s well worth it. Sunday roast was fab as well. Salcombe Gold is a joy. Paul & Liz Nottingham

Good lunch, excellent service from the lady with shoulder length blondish hair. She made us feel very welcome even though the pub was full. On a midweek lunch day. Good pub food. Very warm atmosphere and service to compliment.

Owner was brilliant ask to see her dad's model. Worth a look.

It's a great place go to for a drink and food the local residents are friendly,the owners John and his wife are were helpful.

Not been in for a long while but came down last night with friends to be greeted by large numbers including many, on this surprising mild January night, drinking out on the road. Inside all the food tables were occupied, the chef and the pub food menu were first rate and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Bustle, booze and hearty fare. What more do you need? The Yacht Club next door was closed, maybe for holidays and beefed up the pub numbers but no matter. Service in the Dolphin was friendly and efficient.

A lovely village pub with great food. Always a pleasure. Open fire for those cold nights. Nice selections of beer and ales. Sometimes I even manage to get home without help.

Had New Year’s Day lunch at the dolphin and it was absolutely lovely … super friendly staff and the food was fresh and delicious… Having perviously been going to the ship in noss the food here was way nicer and better value … see you again soon

We were only in the town for a couple of days and had our evening meal at the Dolphin this evening. Tempura prawns are a dish I've never eaten but, wow, that was amazing. Friendly landlord, quick waiting staff and a cosy, warm feel to the pub. We shall definitely come back. Thank you!

It was our anniversary and we were staying for a few days in Newton Ferrers, arriving 7.45 pm on the saturday for a table booked for 8pm. Entering the pub was a warmth from both the atmosphere and staff, which was very inviting after our long journey. The menu selection was excellent , service, friendly and efficient. Hospitality all round 5 star. The locals were very engaging and gave us tips where to visit and walks.Thankyou

Sunday lunch Best ever … in fact the best my husband has ever had apparently!! Friendly, quick service with both the food and the drinks. Definitely recommend and will return. Lovely. Oh yes toilets A ok. Always a must for me.

I came here on a rainy morning in the mist of June, as I entered I felt the missreable atmosphere, I was gutted. I ordered some chips,.Day light robbery. As I sat down I felt the wobbly wooden chair start to decay as my chips arrived they dry, soggy, depressing and far too salty ! With my tounge dried out from the chips I had crawl to the bar to get a drink I waited over 5 minutes to be served ! I then had a lovely ice water it was great ! Being appalled from the customer service I stumbled out and went next door to the yacht club ! The customer service there was 5 star ! And the food was to die for, would highly recommend, anyways this is coming to end of my review in a summary wouldn't recommend

What a pleasant surprise The Dolphin Inn was. The journey to the Inn was very interesting on roads not driven before and at night. But we arrived, parked a short walk away from the Inn. The atmosphere hits you straight away, people were so friendly and helpful. Although we had booked a table and were 15mins late, it was still available, just next to a roaring fire. The food was excellent: for starters we had halloumi chips and mushroom with goats cheese - boy, they both tasted delicious. For mains we had scampi and chips and fish and chips. I have not tasted food that good for sometime. No fatty taste left in your mouth. The food was piping hot and the chips were soft centred with a nice crispy crunch; the fish was lightly battered and the fish texture just flaked away. As for the scampi, you could actually taste the scampi flavour and no oil oozed out as you cut into it: fabulous.We chatted briefly to a couple on the next table, who had eaten Thai Curry, they informed us that it was superb, albeit a little too spiced for them. If we have the chance we will visit the Dolphin Inn again before we return home; and yes we can certainly recommend this place for a drink and a meal. The Inn was clean with a fantastic decor and ambience.

For a light lunch we had starter mussels - these are no starter mussels but simply the biggest, freshest, juiciest you could wish. And most perfectly cooked in creamy garlic and wine sauce, superb!

A must go to for food and drink if visiting, and loads go friendly locals and staff. Check times for food.

Had a late Sunday meal, choosing the battered cod which turned out to be the best fish we’d had in ages, being fresh and piping hot with crispy batter. We appreciated being accommodated so late in the day when the chef was just about to close the kitchen. The staff were very friendly and the pub/restaurant had a lovely ambiance and great location by the beautiful waterfront in the beautiful village of Newton Ferrers.

Lovely location on the banks of the Yealm looking over to Noss Mayo. Lovely glass of red and a couple of beers. Had a lovely fish and chips lunch. Nice fat chips. Light batter and great fish. Great service.

Friday night what could be better than down the pub for fish and chips and a pint! Great food, one of us had mussels were possibly best we've ever had anywhere. Service was excellent, very helpful and friendly staff. Thank you!!

We arrived on Bank Holiday Monday, when it was super busy, without a booking, having originally planned to go to the Ship (but no parking). We saw the seafood and were immediately lured in, hook and sinker. Covid had done the Dolphin few favours but the staff were friendly and we had a lovely spot outside. We ordered mussels and tiger prawns. A few minutes later, a generous portion of food arrived. By gove, it was delicious! Mussels were some of the best I've had (as a Devon boy, I can confirm I have tried many a mussel), the front-of-house staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the cooking was sublime. This was excellent value across the board and really capped off a special weekend for us. To all the staff, who put in a superb amount of effort in these testing times, I am very grateful and look forward to my next visit, maybe to try the fish and chips!

As a family of 4 we've just returned from a round trip to the Dolphin pub. 1 mile walk from Noss Mayo. Pubs in a lovely location with great views so what could go wrong? Food served to 8.30 it states, but you can't book. Arrived qued went in. My wife picked up a menu and was immediately told in no uncertain term "we're not doing food". Ok never mind. We took our drinks and with sad stomachs and found a table. I returned to pub as crisps would keep the wolf from the door. On entering the pub I found an elderly lady also being told no food as too busy, it's not fair, not enough staff etc... So crisps in hand I return to my table. To compound our experience another family on different table stopped a member of staff pointed out the menu clearly said food until 8.30. Hey presto they got an order in, and food appeared in minutes. Lucky them! So Dolphin you either do food or you don't. If you can't due to unforeseen circumstances you can rely that information in a far better manor. I'll add we even called prior to leaving hearing recorded message saying just turn up and get a table. So if you come to Noss Mayo then you should use the Ship or the Swan both Pubs are exceptional and have fantastic staff and service. What a difference one side of the river makes to a Pub!

Such good food in the Dolphin that we ate there twice. King tempura prawns first night, mussels the second both amazing and very reasonably priced. Not only was the food the best we had during our two week visit home to the area. Johnny and his family are doing an incredible job of keeping the local pub going. Locals and visitors should continue to support, you’ll love the food!

A warm welcome good beer and food

I booked a number of restaurants across the week based on reviews but it was an unplanned lunch at The Dolphin Inn that stays in our memory. The setting, beer and cider all a dream and topped further by the burger and juicy tempura Mediterranean prawns.

Good pub food and the staff were so human and friendly - for our short trip to Devon these people stand out as doing their best with the challenges. so refreshing to see the 'leadership' are doing the best.We know it is nt easy but an example of making the best.Foodwise not posh nosh but great value and served with a smile by a great team.If we had found this earlier we would have had all our meals here!Thanks all for a tremendous effort.

Phoned up, we do food 12-1600, turned up at 2, we've just stopped doing food And they're allowing someone to smoke (vape) inside the pub The ship is fully booked all day, this place is empty. Wonder why!

We would really recommend visiting while you are here. Great atmosphere, obviously a favourite with the locals. We stopped off for lunch one day and the food was good al round. Seems popular in the area and reasonably priced. We would return.

My son and I spent a very pleasant few hours sitting in the evening sun at this picturesque spot. Very friendly wit a comfortable atmosphere. Altogether a great place to be and thoroughly recommended.

We came here early on a Friday evening and so glad we did. They don’t take bookings so we got lucky there was a table available.I had fish and chips and my partner had pulled pork burger. We were both pleased with our meals - rather quirky that they aren’t served on plates but in cardboard boxes!Food was great and reasonably priced, service was first class. The waitresses were really friendly, polite and efficient.It’s a nice environment inside too.Will return!

A group of us arrived today and they were packed ( always a good sign). We were lucky to be able to grab a table. Our party had fish and chips, spicy bean burger, a childs burger and 2 tempura prawns with salad hot bread and chips. All were absolutely perfect. The prawns were enormous and delicious. The best mussels I’ve ever had. Lovely staff, great service, good menu, dog friendly and an open fire. Also good outdoor seating when the sun comes out! A favourite of the weekend.

Huge thanks to Nicky and Johnny for all the work they have done in getting our local back and re-opened. The space outside is transformed and such a lovey place to visit. Great food, a very happy atmosphere and a superb new rose wine - perfect for lovely sunny days.

Just had a wonderful experience at the Dolphin - sitting in the sunshine eating amazing tempura prawns! Great to see this local pub coping with the Covid restrictions!

We visited The Dolphin this past Tuesday with our 5 month old puppy and we had an excellent experience. Nicky looked after us from start to finish, and she is such a warm, friendly and bubbly character it felt more like being in her home than in a pub. On Nicky's recommendation, my partner had the fish pie, which was delicious, served with kale and green beans. I had the fish and chips with mushy peas, which was just superb, you need to go and try it from here, because it was simply amazing. We shared a sticky toffee pudding for dessert, which was also delicious. Great place and we'd thoroughly recommend. Thank you!

Lovely pub which welcomes both locals and tourists. Visited several times during our holiday. All food really tasty. We had Thai green curry, lasagne, scampi and fish pie and all delicious. The staff are really friendly and are doing a starling job during these difficult times. Can’t wait to come back.

Another splendid evening at this great pub. Nicky, Johnny, Charles and the whole team are working brilliantly under the new guidelines and the pub is deservedly busy. We all agreed the food was outstanding - had to have some of the Fowey mussels to start, best anywhere in the world. Superb rib eye steaks, fish pie, lasagne. Thank you so much, our visiting friends and family are always so impressed and jealous of our wonderful local!

Excellent food, great pub...friendly staff.Managing Covid requirements very well.We both had the ribeye steak. As good as it gets. Superb.A good pint of Guinness as well...which is always the sign of a well kept pub IMO.Defo got back...this is how pubs should be...a credit to the landlord.If your driving to the Ship Inn...keep driving until you get to the Dolphin...you won’t be disappointed.

Havn't been for a while even though its one of those pubs that you always enjoy - Even though still with the covid rules it was probably our best visit. So welcoming, the staff really nice and attentive. The food was excellent - I did the burger test and the quality of the beef was excellent, so tasty, Even though the visit was short which I understand so as others can come in it was a good evening. Decor good as well. Thankyou.

Do you love sea food, particularly mussels (moules)? I have enjoyed these across the continent, served very competently by so many restraints, but tonight without doubt I enjoyed the ‘Best of West’, Cornish - Fowey, mussels the world can serve. Truly world class, the best I have ever eaten. Beautifully served and cooked by Jonathan - Chef at the Dolphin. Don’t tell too many about this hidden wonder, otherwise you may never get in.

I had heard great things about the mussels and I was not disappointed. You would be hard fetched to find better. That applies to the service which was so naturally welcoming and friendly. The perfect end to a sunny summer day by the water.

A first visit for us whilst visiting our son. We were greeted by a lovely lady who made us feel very welcome on a dark and dingy night.We were served with our food quickly but a nice gap in between courses and I was very impressed with the standard and freshness of it. I had fish and chips, I think it was the best I have had in the area! The rest of the group really enjoyed their food also.We have visited the area for many years and we will definitely return on our next visit. Thank you landlord and landlady for your lovely hospitality.
