The Sunday Roast is profoundly flavoursome. Absolutely the best roast dinner dining out I have ever had. Even the brocoli was delicious! Hands down, an amazing experience, such a dreamy and delightful plate of food. Yummy!

Great host, tasty food, very reasonable prices and friendly locals. We went on a Friday night and it was packed when we arrived but full of atmosphere and very welcoming. Special mention for the bar man (owner?) who was particularly good - always one step ahead of what we needed. Will definitely be back next time we’re in the area.

Blackawton is a little out of the way but worth the trip. They had an interest variety of dishes on the menu and seemed very popular, we had booked in advance. I had a Lamb leg steak, which was thick as a rump steak and perfectly cooked, tender and succulent. Good beer, the Cornish Guinness style Mena Dhu was really good. Not as sweet but with a hint of dark chocolate. Covid Protocols were brilliant throughout and the staff were helpful and friendly. Check opening hours and days, as I think they currently close early week days. If you are coming here from south of Chillington area, don't let the sat nav take you cross country. Best way is Slapton, Strete and then inland to Blackawton

Really lovely food. And very reasonably priced. We booked via email very easily, they don't have a children's menu but advised us they could make simple children's meals on request. My daughter had a generous portion of sausages chips and peas and really enjoyed it. The staff were also lovely and helpful. Only downside was parking was a bit difficult but we managed!

We came here hoping to celebrate my birthday and my partners new job on a holiday. We chose the wrong place. Firstly, I was so cold, I didn't want to take my jacket off for the entire meal. We went to the till when we arrived and we were told to sit down and we would be bought a menu. Ten minutes later we received our menus and asked what drinks we want. I asked if there was a drinks menu and the waitress said "is it not on there?" as if I would know. It wasn't so she then went and got me a wine list. I asked what cider they had and she said "I'm not the person to ask, I don't drink". She didnt offer to go and find out or anything so I had a coke. After ordering our food, it took over 40 minutes to arrive at the table, and the burger was burnt. We were so hungry by this point we both ate all of it anyway. No one checked we were happy or offered more drinks. When someone finally came to clear our plates, we ordered desserts which fortunately they offered for free due to the wait, but we weren't the only table that had a wait. A couple next to us also waited about 45 mins for food. We were a bit gutted overall and certainly wouldn't rush back.

We stopped for lunch on a rainy day at 12.15pm. It took almost an hour for us to get our food - 6 orders of sandwiches plus 2 kids meals. Food was fairly good. The ambience could be better and brighter - it has a bit of a spit and sawdust feel to the place.

Kate and I had alovely drive to Blackawton, just hoping that no one would be coming from the opposite direction as the narrow lanes had few passing spots. WE were lucky and you should try your luck too as the George is well worth it. Nothing special about the pub itself but the warmth of the welcome, the food and the beer are all very special. I had delicious home made smoked mackerel pate. Lots of butter and capers. Kate had a very good bun with a filling of halloumi and mushrooms. Do make the effort. you will be well rewarded

Ate there with my daughter on a weekday evening and what a treat! I had the fish and chips option (hake) and that came with inn made minted crushed peas and tartar sauce and you could tell straight away this is a dish made from scratch - nothing out of a tin!. My daughter had the steak and devoured it and both meals had hand cut home-made chips that added such quality to the dishes. New owners Jon and Jan have got off to a flying start! Often visit the George for a pint but haven’t eaten here for a couple months. The tikka masala curry and chilli served to us last night, Friday 14th was without doubt the best pub meal we’ve had in a long while and the best curry I’ve ever had. Final. We eat out all the time, across Devon and Cornwall and the only meal I enjoyed more this year was at the Seahorse in Dartmouth.

Lovely location, friendly service, great views and outside space for children. Very welcoming and accommodating. We visited this pub on holiday as my daughter has coeliac diesease and I had found a previous review of this pub catering for gluten free diets. We were not disappointed. The chef was very aware of gluten free cooking/preparation and most of the menu could be adapted for gluten free diets. Chef had made fresh gf pasta only that day, but my daughter wanted fish and chips, which was Cider battered instead and was very tasty. All of our food was amazing with some lovely fish specials - curry and seafood tagliatelle. We will return on our next visit to Devon.

We were four couples when we visited the George Inn for dinner. The menu was very interesting and, surprisingly for a pub, quite varied. The service was friendly and efficient. When the food came it was delicious. We had chosen six different things on the menu and they were all excellent, each dish was accompanied not with the same vegetables but a variety of different ones. We had dessert too and these were definitely to be recommended. Great food.

Walked down to the George at about 6pm on November 4th, the night of the Blackawton fireworks. The pub was jammed full of locals and visitors alike. Staff were working flat out both inside and an temporary outside bar. The pub had hired a brilliant folk type band which kept everyone entertained. It was really nice to see that the pub maintained normal prices despite the big event and a captive audience. One of the best community events I’ve ever been too and the pub was right at the heart of it and helped make it a great night.

I organised a dining party for 18 of us and have nothing other than lavish praise for the execution of what was an incredibly seamless operation in the provision of a 3 course meal for all of us. How the staff managed to get all of the food out at the same time and piping hot is quite amazing - and it tasted fabulous! Rich steak and ale pie and the pub’s renowned fish and chips went down very well and yummy starters and even more yummy puddings made for a great evening and many full tummies!. The log burner, the atmosphere and the laughter made it for me and The George Inn nailed it! It was exactly what I wanted. We were asked what we would like to eat beforehand and not given a menu to choose from and every little detail was taken care of. For me a great evening; one I will remember for a long time so if you want to enjoy what we experienced - check it out!

A revisit after some five years - perhaps we shouldn't expect things not to have changed.Given that we were there on a Saturday night, the week immediately before the start of the school holidays with plenty of revellers around, only two of the potential four ale taps were in use, serving quite ordinary beer. The menu too seemed short of a number of items with only one rib-eye steak being left when we ordered one each. The calamari starter was not a tricky dish to prepare and was delicious, but the steaks were pretty awful. My wife's peppercorn sauce in particular tasted as though it was made with mostly water, a little powdered milk, a spoon of bisto and a bit of crushed pepper for taste. It was runny and foul.My blue cheese sauce certainly tasted of blue cheese, but there was not much in evidence. Accompanying veg was OK.After a lovely meal five years ago here, with a note in my old Good Beer Guide recommending the ales, The George simply did not live up to expectations.

We reserved for 5 of us for the Sunday "carve your own chicken" deal. The response on the phone to my query about one of our party being semi-disabled was excellent. I was told that it would be best to drop him off at the front door and then park in the car-park. Also that they would make room for a wheelchair at one of the tables if we needed.I had not read any of these reviews before we went so went with no pre-conceived ideas. It was lovely! As stated in the menu the whole chicken was brought to a table next to us, with an abundance of vegetables. We were told that we could ask for more if we wanted. The chicken was delicious, as were the vegetables and Yorkshire and gravy. Our elderly relatives (3 of them) really enjoyed the experience - they were able to have exactly what they wanted without the hassle of queueing at a carvery (something which can be difficult for the older frailer people). The other menu choices also looked temptingThe staff (barman and lady chef) were very nice and helpful. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine and delicious desserts. We liked the ambience and the views from the French doors - it must be lovely to sit out on the terrace on a nice summer day. We went on a rainy day but the room was nice and warm.So - I don't understand the previous comments about the "dragon" etc. Has the pub recently changed hands? We will certainly go again.

I appreciate the comment made by Rowena in response to my review recently, not being fully aware of the situation at The George, I can only sympathize. The only further comment I would like to make was she also responsible for the VERY thick tasteless soup and the rather sad pizza? In the past we used this pub on a regular basis and thoroughly enjoyed the food and friendly ambiance from the locals and the owners, one of our favourite meals was the roast on Sundays. Our routine has changed but being in the area, we thought it would be an excellent place to have a quick lunch. We arrived and Ruth ( the owner ) remarked that it was a long time since we had been to pub, we ordered our food, I was not sure whether to have the crab cakes and asked what sort of size were they, the answering retort was ' I'll measure them if you like', a totally uncalled for comment.I reviewed the specials board and decided on the brocolli and Stilton soup, a particular favourite of mine, my husband ordered a pizza with peppers and tuna. We were then advised the order would take a little while as the oven was being cleaned, rather an unusual time to do this task !!Gone was the friendly conversation that we recalled, obviously very preoccupied and busy with us and one other customer, we seated and waited, a local appeared for a pint, during which she was interrupted by a phone call which was received with impatience, fortunately her voice changed when she answered the telephone. The recipient of the beer seated himself with the expression of acceptance with her rather unusual manner. My husband decided to have another pint, with no sign of service, both of the regulars suggested he rang the bell for her attention, her response was very negative, not even a glimmer of a smile, just a frown. Our food arrived and my soup was in glass mug, served with homemade rolls and butter, the soup was VERY thick, rather like green porridge, I was unable to taste any Stilton, asking my husband to sample it, his first reaction ' no Stilton ' ! His pizza was OK a sprinkling of tuna 80p extra and flakes of peppers 40p extra was a disappointment.A little later Ruth approached and I explained about the lack of Stilton in the soup her reaction was most Dragon like, I suggested she sampled it, her response..... she could taste Stilton. She offered me more soup but by then I was no longer interested. My husband asked for a box for the remaining half of his pizza to take home, when he could add some slices of tomatoes and some roasted peppers.I will give her due she did not charge us for the soup, it was terrible ! I feel sad for our experience but it may be be that passing trade does not interest her, only her local trade, personally I think this very short-sighted. It may have been a day fraught with problems but it should not affect the standard of service and preferably with a welcoming smile.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others
