I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others

My husband booked to stay here for 2 nights 1st and 2nd November. The photos on booking.com are false … the place is nothing like it shows and nothing as it says either … absolutely disgusting place to stay. It was dark when he arrived there back door was booted out. There was no electric he had to call to someone who came out and checked it. Gave him an upgrade, oh my life still no TV hardly an lights working and the bed - well he couldn’t sleep it was so bad … he never stayed the next night. Hoping for a full refund from booking.com or it will be taken further for false advertisement. You just cannot trust these sites !!!

Booked through AirBnb, listing stated fully renovated hotel with microwave, TV and fridge. Turned up to find builders renovating a half derelict building who kindly told us up until 5 weeks ago the place had been abandoned for 2 years. The room was dangerous and uninhabitable. There were loose electrical fittings, everything was covered in a grimy, sticky dust. The sofa bed my 3 year old was due to sleep on was covered in dog hair. There were sharp and broken tiles in the bathroom. There were dirty fingerprints on the walls and ceiling. The windows were whitewashed out, the garden was overgrown and weedy, all the fences were broken. There were piles of building materials and boxes everywhere. The hallway had dead bugs and spiders on all the windowsills. The fridge didn’t work. The TV had no aerial so we wouldn’t watch live TV. There was no microwave (the listing said there was). We opened a case with AirBNB and showed the photos and were instantly granted a full refund. We stayed for a total of 10 minutes. AVOID.

We were staying a short walk from the hotel in a self catering house and were hoping to eat out most nights. I popped in to book a table and was really disappointed as we couldn’t eat in. We were not told about daytime dining or takeaway food so I assume only for Hotel Guests. We ended up eating in for a week.

I had an enjoyable stay as the staff were great as was the breakfast but am afraid I can only give it 3 stars as the rooms are in serious need of redecorating - there were bits of wall paper hanging off the wall the sink was cracked - we had probably the best room there with a large belcony with sea view together with 2 broken chairs - the location is very good which I gather commands the high price also the new VAT rates have not been applied to this hotel

We visited Sand Pebbles to eat at the restaurant about 4 years ago after it was recommended to us when we were staying near and the food was really lovely and the fish and chips the best i had ever eaten. Naturally, as we were back staying in the area on Holiday recently we went out of our way to go back due to the lovely memories. We couldn’t have been more disappointed really, which was such a shame. I don’t usually leave a negative review but this really left such a bad taste. When we arrived we were really slow to be served despite there being hardly anyone there. We ordered 2 pints of Thatchers and 2 pints of coke to start. Firstly, the cider on tap was very clearly not Thatchers gold, it was bitter and watery and generally not pleasant and so we sent it back. We watched the lady pour the pints of coke from a 2l bottle of Tesco’s own classic Cola. It was warm and slightly flat and costs 50p per bottle in Tesco so how they can get away with charging restaurant prices for Tesco’s own brand cola is just outrageous. We ordered our food and waited an hour for it to arrive. The pork chop was over cooked and arrived 10 minutes after everyone else’s food. The muscles were generally good and the burgers were okay. The liver was dry and also unpleasant. We waited a further half an hour for our plates to be cleared after we had finished eating despite there being only one other couple in the restaurant and ordered dessert. The sticky toffee that my partner had was admittedly very nice and the sundae was also quite nice. However, the cheesecake was still frozen in the middle and not the nicest texture. We really hope that some serious improvements are made as this used to be a really lovely establishment. Very sad that our lovely memories of this are tainted as I had regularly recommended this to people coming to stay in south Devon before this trip!

Spent weekend 1st/3rd February at Sandpebbles. First impression when walking through the door wasn’t promising. Fold down table with bell on to ring for attention, obviously didn’t work as after ringing it about 5 times a lady who was wandering around spotted us and came over. She took us up to our room which was the ‘The King Room’ (which we paid extra for!) so we were hoping for something really nice! When we walked in it was like walking into a fridge. There was a convector heater only in the room which was turned off to which you would of thought would of been turned on as it was a very cold weekend and that they were expecting us. In the bathroom was a towel rail which also was turned off. The hand basin had a crack in it and on the wall above the rail was hair from the previous visitor. We went down to breakfast the next morning- the convecor heater on the landing couldn’t be plugged in as the plug was broken. We went to order our breakfast and the owner was in the most dirtest clothes you have ever seen to serve customers in - it was disgusting. We went out for the day leaving our heating on low to keep the room at a decent temperature but when we got back they had both been turned off at the plug so we had to start all over again. It made me so poorly that we didn’t go to breakfast on the Sunday we went to Torbay Hospital on our way home. Would we or would we recommend anyone stay here - NO

Council flop house meets Basil Faulty. No greeting, no reception staff, just manky carpet, but we found a "chef" (by wondering into a dimly lit, sticky bar area with two dirty, damp but friendly border collies) in filthy clothes who may or may not have been the owner. We had pre-booked via booking dotcom, but he had no idea who we were. To be fair, he gave my partner the choice of two filthy, depressing, delapidated rooms, 14 and 16. We stayed in 14 and trust me, my feet never touched the ground. It was so dirty that I wore my shoes to bed! This is an OK room if you had worked your proverbials off all day on a building site and were willing to pay £50 a night B&B for a decent fry up. I can't be bothered to elaborate, but the owner is a cowboy and the place is a dive! You'd be better off sleeping rough on the beach. Do not stay here unless you are perhaps homeless or seeking asylum in this country. Oh, and avoid booking dot co m as they are simply a joke with no customer service. Please book decent places via tourist information unless you wanna pay 90 odd pounds for filth. Good luck to you!

We were staying with the family in a cottage near Hope Cove and noticed that Sand Pebbles did take-away fish and chips which we ordered by phone, We collected them 15 minutes later and they were excellent, large portions, fresh and beautifully cooked. Encouraged by this we booked Sunday Lunch but it was a big disappointment. The beef was tough, most surprising because the owner claimed it came from his own herd, and the vegetables were overcooked. the desserts were OK but obviously from an external supplier rather than home made. We shall definitely get fish and chips from them again but certainly won't be using the restaurant.

The hotel is tired and overpriced. It smells of damp and old dog. The carpets are filthy. The decor is dated. The 'suite' we booked wasn't a suite all all but two bedrooms with broken twin beds in one and an old, uncomfortable double bed in the other with a lumpy mattress. There was a dirty and old sofa in the 'suite' but no table or chair. There was a small TV in one corner of the room but the sofa was directly beneath it and the bed was too far away to watch the TV from. The towels were discoloured and smelled of damp - I smelled of damp after drying myself with them. The shower was weak and took ages for hot water to come through. There was a noisy fan somewhere in the hotel that could be clearly heard from our room. We had a 'private' terrace but it wasn't private as anyone could access it and all the chairs for us to use on the terrace were broken or damaged. At breakfast we ordered poached eggs on toast. The eggs were hard. The coffee didn't taste of anything. We paid £130 for our 'suite' last minute as there was a mistake with our booking at another establishment in Hope Cove so we needed to find somewhere to stay on the first night of our visit. The only place with rooms was Sand Pebbles. Now I know why - it's the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The options on booking.com were £100 for a small double or £130 for a 'suite'. I opted for the suite as we were staying in Hope Cove (a lovely place) for our wedding anniversary. Big mistake. I would never stay in Sand Pebbles again. I would rather sleep on the beach or stay at home. We are now staying for two nights in the Hope and Anchor, just down the road. Only a few £ per night more, but total luxury in comparison - clean, comfortable, beautiful room with sea views, great food, friendly staff. Everything Sand Pebbles isn't.

The food is brilliant, served in man sized portions, incredibly tasty and great value for money. Nothing is too much trouble for the hosts. There is ample free parking and the hotel is located just 200 yards from the beach. The bar dark and dingy. Breakfast was OK the best thing we had to eat there was lunchtime proper crab sanwiches. Had an evening meal there with my family there were 9 of us. Most of them had steak which was good I had chicken a bit disappointing. We had a hiccup with a slice of bread which was mouldy no great problem fresh bread can go very quickly. However the owners attitude was what can I do I buy it fresh every day and left the waitress to deal with it. £2 a bottle of mini coke !! The staff were lovely. The rooms are reasonable and good value if you don't mind an uncomfortable bed.

On a beautiful evening we decided to visit Sand Pebbles. After a drink on their terrace we then decided to have a meal as the menu had plenty of things that we both liked. It was pretty busy and there was a wait until our meals arrived but we were well looked after by the 2 waitresses and kept us in drinks. I guess that at busy times of the year, a wait is no bad thing as you know that the food is freshly cooked for you!The food was very good and at a reasonable price

We visited Hope Cove at the begining of July and tried to book a table at the main pub/restaurant. Unfortunately they did not take bookings. However this proved to our advantage as going up the hill we saw boards outside advertising thisrestaurant to non residents. We called in and the lady could not have been more helpful even printing the menu off for us to show our friend. We came back that night and had a lovely meal. All three of us had fish which was freshly cooked and delicious. The restaurant was a little tired but clean and comfortable with good views of the countryside. Sadly there was only be other couple dining at this time, perhaps due to the fact the hotel was under new management. Service was good and if we Are staying in the area again we would definitely stay and eat there.

We were renting a cottage nearby and so visited for Sunday Lunch (albeit late in the afternoon). We were told that our dog was welcome in the resturaunt. The Sunday Roast was great and very good value for money. Our waitress was lovely and very efficient. I wish the (new) owners all the very best of luck for the future.

My parents tried to book this for a meal put during a week in Hope Cove. Their phone call was answered by a very stressed sounding member of staff who told them not to book as they were busy that evening. My husband and I booked for the following night. When I rang up, the lady I spoke to said 'what day is it? Thursday? The second of June? Well it should probably be ok'The really sad thing about eating at this restaurant is the attention to detail. We both had fish cakes for a starter; described as 'fish cakes' on the menu but only one quite small fish cake on each plate. About 10 minutes after finishing my starter, I was told that my main choice was not available. The herby mash on my main was stone cold and my husbands plate was burning hot with no warning given. The chorizo was also missing from my order so it was essentially fish with mash for £14. My husbands cheese board arrived with no knife and when he asked for one, he was given a butter knife. The quality of the ingredients was really good but we both felt that the attitude of the staff really let this place down.

As we entered the hotel, after not having visited for several years, we knew that from the welcome that we received from Ian and Emma, the new owners, that 'Sand Pebbles' was returning to its former glory. We were shown to room 10, which is large and comfortable with large windows over looking fields, and if you looked to the right Outer Hope and the sea!.Then it was down for pre dinner drinks, as fortunately the small, but adequate bar had reopened, as had the restaurant.Dinner was then served. The food was obviously cooked from fresh, and had been well cooked and presented! We thoroughly enjoyed it.A very comfortable bed ensured a good nights sleep. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and was very good.We stayed for three nights, and during that time the hotel was at least half full, which for mid week in late January is very good.General comments on the hotel. It was all clean and tidy. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The balcony area at the front of the hotel would obviously be a lovely place to sit on days when the weather is good! Decoration was good, but in places needs bringing more up to date, but I am sure that will happen over the coming months. In all we had an excellent stay and very much look forward to staying there again in the near future!Well done Ian and Emma.

A last minute decision, we decided that Hope Cove would make a great place for sea kayaking. Searching the internet I came across Sand Pebbles, one room left. Feeling privileged I booked the room. When we arrived we were shown to our room, top of the house at number 12. It was clean and tidy, no view but a tiled roof but hey ho, it was a last minute booking. We left and wandered down to the beach, absolutely beautiful location. After a fun evening we went back to our room, it was very quiet and we had a peaceful nights sleep. Woke and had a shower, all very clean. Got dressed and went downstairs looking forward to breakfast. This is where the we felt let down, there was no one to greet you when you entered the dining room, therefore not sure of the procedure. We helped ourselves to drinks and popped some bread in the toaster, still waiting for a member of staff to arrive. Eventually we were able to order two full English, they arrived swamped in fat and not very appetising. My motto is less is more, if the quality of the sausage, egg and bacon was increased there would be no need for the greasy fried bread, potatoes or mushrooms. Heinz tomato sauce bottles filled with other red sauce was also not good. The breakfast is what the customer remembers rather than how comfortable the bed was. Unfortunately I had to walk away and leave half of it. Customer service definitely needs improving, I had to ring the bell 5 times to get a response and pay for my nights stay. I'm sorry, we won't be back.

Our room was dated but comfortable. We were going to eat out but as it was raining, we ate our evening meal at the hotel. The chap in charge didn't seem very happy. The young girl waitress kept making mistakes and brought the wrong starter out for my husband. It was vaguely reminiscent of Fawlty Towers. I chose monkfish which was very chewy. There were lots of noises in the night at this place! Our visit was redeemed by the breakfast- lots of choice of dishes, good portion size and very tasty. The teapot was very small for two people though.

I feel a bit bad only giving them an average because they were so accommodating.. but there you go.. We ate early in the evening and were really looking forward to a nice seafood meal. The food was pleasant, nothing to complain about.... but nothing to rave about either.I had the skate, which was quite nice... and my partner had the locally caught lobster - which was a little underwhelming. The lobster was cold, and a little rubbery, it wasnt as fresh as we were expecting, But i guess thats always going to happen if you order half lobster early in the evening. The wine choices were nice.... all went well with the meals. The staff were friendly .. the location nice... and it was clean. You cant really ask more for a pleasant meal out....

I have just spent 3 days at Sand Pebbles B&B in Hope Cove; having read some of the reviews by other guests on Trip Advisor I was not sure what I would find. However! It is a great place to base yourself for walking the Coastal Path, visiting Salcombe, etc. The rooms were immaculate, the staff friendly and the breakfasts are superb. I had an evening meal there on two occasions and they were delicious. The Fish and Chips are very special indeed. I would not hesitate to recommend this B&B to anyone planning a trip to Hope Cove.

Probably a nightmare for restauranteurs when a table of 14 is booked! However, we were quickly served with drinks in the bar and given menus and our orders takenWe were then taken to our table and the main course served promptly.Between us we had chosen from a whole lobster to a burger and fish and chips to one of the 'catches of the day' which was Monkfish. All 14 of us said that their meal was very good, and we all had a desert - the sundae looked fantastic! As we ate early evening, there was only one other table in the restaurant, but the room had a good atmosphere and 2 other tables were taken by the time we left. The service was excellent and we really enjoyed our experience at Sand Pebbles.

Eaten here 3 times recently as just down road from where we were staying. Staff all very welcoming. Good choice menu with specials. Food presented well, very tasty, good size portions. Having eaten at the new look hope and anchor would say sand pebbles much better menu, service and value. Hope and anchor style over substance. It's only a short walk up to sand pebbles so give it try, sure you won't be disappointed. Would suggest owners give the reception area a bit of a face lift as might put customers off, but actual restaurant is fine.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

Staff was rude when they got our order wrong and then correct it after a bit of telling them but the was going to refuse and service that day was not good. Was over charged with a coffee and cake we didnt have as an extra 7 pounds , Other times been good. Food nice.
