This cafe should be great. Lovely location, quirky interior and the staff are friendly and approachable. The food however……. The breakfast menu promised great things. Granary bread, sourdough, fresh ingredients. At £9.50 for poached eggs on toast, I was expecting thick juicy granary toast. Instead my poached eggs came on two pieces of cheap brown supermarket bread. It was a very sad looking meal. My partners cooked breakfast came out within minutes suggesting it wasn’t freshly cooked - and that came with cheap white supermarket bread! Won’t be going again and would definitely not recommend.

Oil obviously well overdue being changed. Could taste it on the greasy hash browns and smell it on our clothes after. The staff all sat outside hogging the benches so no members of the public can use them to enjoy the harbour views. Literally 6-8 people, staff and their mates sat there popping in when a customer came by (saw this on all three days I was in town) Two big breakfasts ready in around 4mins so food is clearly cooked ahead then warmed up. The staff were actually well mannered and polite so it’s just the food and cleanliness standard letting them badly down. Really sad that a cafe in such a prime spot is so poor. Would not return.

Coffee was lovely Milkshake consists of milk from the carton mixed with the syrups for coffee and stirred, not nice at all, and costs £5 Eggs on toast were average to poor taste, especially for the price! The "American Pancakes" were barely pancakes. They were cold, from a packet opened last week and tasted vile. Do not order the pancakes! They're inedible. Even giving our order was awkward as the window to order is beside the person making coffee, so ordering one item at a time while the cashier runs back and forth.. Overall, very poor set up, the worst food I've had in a very long time which ended up at £20 a head. Avoid!!

Don’t bother worst lunch. Granary bread was the cheapest processed you could find, grated cheese with the thinest watery ham and accompanied salad was terrible too. So much money for such little thought - absolutely awful. Give it a miss

Ahhh man it pains me to write this one but gotta be honest on it. It used to be superb like really but now it’s just resting on its laurels of location and somewhat, reputation. The staff are like gen z or whatever and struggle to keep up which could be a training issue, I don’t know. The food is okay but it’s not good and there are things that just shouldn’t happen like oh we have run out of ketchup like wut just send someone up to the spar to buy some, think! I had to go to my car to get some packets of ketchup for my son, like seriously lol It used to be great, the location is still great but the food and service… it’s a gamble. Maybe try one of the new places on island street and see if they’re better.

Has always been the place for breakfast especially for the locals. Very disappointing, although eating in tea came in a paper cup because the staff said they didn’t have a suitable cup. Pancakes came, zero presentation just 3 small ones slapped on a plate, crazy considering the price they charge Great location spoilt by a total lack of love and care and thought. Could be a wonderful experience with an owner who cared Try the Salcombe Coffee Co. So much better

I'm afraid this cafe is a really overpriced let down in comparison to everywhere we have eaten breakfast in Salcombe and surrounding areas. £44.30 for 2 adults and an 8 year old! Cheap food products, not very well cooked and all served in a rush rush attitude. When I told the all very young and not very bothered staff that the table wasn't clean and had food on it they said "oh dear that's a shame!!" Then I went through 4 or 5 sets of self service cutlery that most definitely had not seen the dishwasher recently! When our food came the £2 mushroom side order was literally 3 mushroom cut in half and the toast was wrong type on all orders. Butter was in the foil wraps and was liquid you may as well poured out of a jug! The £5 milkshake was just watery cheap choc milk in a very small cup and the worst priced I've seen all holiday! Also cant remember the last time I was ever charged for tomato sauce sachets! If you are looking for even a modicum of decent breakfast go and find somewhere else. AVOID!!

This place used to be the best breakfast in Salcombe by far, but sadly no more. The hatch service was a back log of people trying to order and those trying to collect their orders. We ordered take away sandwiches (nice sausage but crap bread).. we sat down to wait for our order when the irritating skinny dude loudly says to other staff...they've ordered take away and now they're sitting down inside like we were making some big mistake.... we're we supposed to order our food and then walk away without it???? There were no other customers (unsurprisingly) so I'm not sure what he was grumbling about...I called to him we're waiting for our food but he ignored me. Food was mediocre place was a mess inside. The Food was atrocious, the smashed avocado on sour dough wasn’t presented on sour dough( although still charged for) which I wasn’t Informed of until after i received the food. When I dared question It I was told ‘no one received sourdough with their orders’ as though that was somehow acceptable. The scrambled eggs weren’t mixed correctly and were runny and vile. The price of £11 for what I received was insulting. Me and my partner agreed the service was abysmal and the food was somehow worse. The attitude of the owners was woeful and overall I’d I could rate this 0 stars I would. Foul from start to finish. I demanded a refund which I received. The blasé arrogance of the staff was as confusing as it was disappointing. The older ladies prepping the food who I believe to be the owners treated myself and others with contempt and utter disdain. The worst attempt at food service I’ve ever experienced. Mind blowing considering the location. Anyone with half a brain or a modicum of respect for the customers hard earned money could turn this pit into a gold mine. Abhorrent, avoid like the plague.

Great place great food. I see someone complained about the price of the fish and chip and portion size in the daily mail how sad some people are. When you break the price down it’s cheap. Try breaking down the costs 1 cost of materials ( fish, potatoes, oil, flour for batter) 2 staff cost (not just wages but NI contributions from employers cost) 3 council tax, (biggest rip off ever)4 gas, electric,( again biggest rip off) 5 rent or lease 6 property up keep (maintenance) 7 cost of equipment and maintenance of equipment. 8 the price you pay includes VAT which is collected at no cost to the government 9 accountancy costs. Just a few over heads I’m sure there is a few more on top of that. if you think its expensive think again or if you can’t afford to eat out don’t eat out, oh and I’m a customer I enjoyed my meal and left a tip or the staff because they gave good service and the food was up to my standard. Thank you everyone for making my meal so good

We wanted a reasonably priced fish and chips and found Captain Morgan's Cafe on Fore Street using Google Maps. The fish and chips was freshly cooked and very tasty. The fish was nicely battered and the chips tasted good too, with some of the potato skin left on for some extra texture and flavour. Unfortunately one of the worst hospitality experiences we have had for a while. - started off ok with a nice welcome and order was placed - drinks took 20 minutes to arrive - order was wrong when first brought out then we had to tell them the order again. - kitchen staff were exremely noisy to the point we could not hear our conversation. (I’m all for a happy working environment but this bordered on festival goers on the third day!!) - no cutlery brought out with the breakfast. - no apology for the time taken which was beyond a reasonable time for the food ordered. Whilst I appreciate it was busy at the time I think as a minimum we should have been advised of the waiting time and an apology when the food was brought out an hour after we ordered. My son’s review - “there was more partying than cooking”. We often visit salcombe and wanted to give the new manager some support, unfortunately we won’t be visiting again. Please consider some improvements for when the summer season hits and it gets even busier than it was on a sunny Saturday.

Great location with reaaly good choices on menu. Sandwiches are freshly made to order. We had a prawn sandwich served on brown bread which was delicious, so full of prawns. Also had portion of chips (had to be done) which, again, were lovely and 2 cokes....total bill £12.90. Very friendly staff and cannot recommend highly enough.

We stopped at Captain Morgans on a busy Bank Holiday Monday. Service was prompt and friendly from Holly. Very nice Bacon and Egg Sandwich with a good filling and nice fresh bread. A decent sized Mocha was good too.

What a great way to start an amazing weekend in Salcombe other than breakfast at Captain Morgan’s. I do like their belly busting breakfast. You can sit inside or just outside too now. Not just breakfast I hear you say...open all day for coffees and also now for lunch.

What's not to like? Lovely breakfast and friendly service. We would definitely pop in next time we visit Salcombe.

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others

Best pub garden in Salcombe but if the weathers not good then inside it’s cosy and traditional. Have never found the staff anything but friendly and polite and especially Steve the manager who never seems to stop and yet still has time for a chat. There can be a wait for food when it’s busy but you’re in Salcombe so just chill and who cares when the view is this good!

Had lunch here today with a friend, used to visit a few years ago but then moved out of the area… firstly the welcome and service were both excellent… the scallop dish with toasted sourdough was the star of my lunch… the herby, garlicky sauce was beautiful… I wish I’d ordered another portion for my main course.. please ask the chef to never change this dish 💕

It’s been quite a while since I’ve eaten here as a customer, and it was as delightful as I remember. Excellent service from Luke & team, an excellent menu and a great vibe in the dining area made up for it. All four of our meals were first class and it was a joy to return. Great to see that while things may have changed quite a bit in Salcombe, the King’s Arms is as good as ever!
