The weather was amazing, so we decided to go out for a meal in the Red Cow’s very pleasant beer garden. We went for the fish & chips (£19) and the ‘Hailian style’ (sic) ribs with salad (£9). (We did ask what ‘Hailian style’ was, and suggested that it might be a menu misprint, but the server insisted that it was a thing, although didn’t know exactly what it was.) The fish and chips – we actually substituted the chips with fries – were mediocre. The batter was very, very crispy (possibly overcooked), and the haddock wasn’t very tasty (although that might be a seasonal thing). In retrospect we wondered if the fish is battered on site and then deep fried in the kitchen, or if it’s pre-cooked and then re-heated somehow. For £19 it certainly should be the former. The fries were lukewarm, but on the ten or so times we’ve had chips or fries in the Red Cow, rarely have they ever been served either hot or decently cooked. We had a problem with the ribs. At one end, the ribs were decently cooked and tasty, and the ‘Panzanella style’ salad and pesto were good. However, from the middle to the other end, the ribs were seriously undercooked, to the extent of the flesh being pink and not separating from the bone. Being pork ribs, this was an issue, and we asked for them to be taken away. The server came out and tried to justify the pub’s position by explaining that the ribs are “supplied pre-cooked” (therefore presumably attempting to absolve the pub of any responsibility). Apart from the quirky attitude to customer service (to say the least), this was even more alarming. Pork ribs are supplied to the pub pre-cooked – in this case seriously undercooked – chilled, and then re-heated somehow in the kitchen. (Thankfully we had no subsequent ill-effects.) It was a health risk, and we trust that the pub will mention this case to its supplier. It was also a revelation that meat is supplied pre-cooked and then reheated. How many other dishes on the somewhat pricey menu also undergo this cheap and cheerful method of food preparation? We requested a refund for the ribs. The server informed us that as we’d consumed half of the dish, they were only willing to offer us £4. This might have been reasonable if, say, it had it been a prime steak that was not cooked to our liking, but that we’d partially eaten – but seeing as it was undercooked, chilled and then reheated pork, we felt perfectly justified in requesting a full refund for the dish, and thought that the offer of £4 indicated a really bad attitude towards customer satisfaction. (Trashing the customer experience for a ha’por’th of tar!) We asked to see the manager, but we were told that they’d finished for the evening. However, they then appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. With little interest in listening to their patrons’ concerns, they reluctantly offered us a refund of £8 (which we accepted, although it was still £1 less than we’d paid for the dish). We berated the poor customer service, and were told (we think) to take the £8 and not come back – a request with which we will of course comply, seeing as our business over the years clearly didn’t matter all that much to them. In the end the two of us spent a total of £67.75, less the £8 refund. On a positive note, the wine (at around £30) was decent.

Upon my entry I thought lt wow what a Wounderful classic British pub. Antique furniture and a roaring fire how ever to my surprise when order a delightful my sweet beverage I was asked for identification. Not a problem I thought. However to my surprised they said they are not accepting people into their public house below the age of 25. When I asked to use the toilet before leaving they refused. This was a great disappointment for myself and my partner. We left the premises and when to the Cheshire Cat where they happy served me and my partner (male) a wonderful beverage. I would not advise visiting this public house due to their ageism. Sincerely, Jed

Brilliant service, my partner had a meal which she did not like. They could not be more helpful and sorted it out straight away and even got us a free drink each. It is about how you deal with issues that makes the difference to an experience. Can’t say how good they have been. Well done… I can’t recommend enough.
