We have walked near-to, and past, this village pub many times over the last year, and we have always promised ourselves a visit. Our expectations were that the pub would not entirely suit us. To explain: we are wine drinkers, we “don’t do” beer or cider, or spirits. We do, however, enjoy good wine, not necessarily fine wine, just dry and white with, at least, a medium complexity and subtle fruitiness. We felt that this pub would be unlikely to offer such wine. There are other drinks that we enjoy, particularly when out walking; soft drinks like lime and soda, sometimes a coffee, occasionally just mineral water. Despite expectations (and maybe some reservations) we decided we would visit and see for ourselves, and we did this at about 19:15 on a Bank Holiday Monday in late May. The bar was exactly what our mind’s eye had promised. It was clean and tidy and the landlady was very helpful and pleasant. The clientele was mostly local folk and dog-walkers (again as expected). I asked if wine was available, and indeed it was, but it was the kind of wine that is kept, if for nothing else, the occasional wine-drinker who has no particular taste for wine. Don’t get me wrong, most of the wine we buy is from supermarkets at £5-10 a bottle category. We very occasionally splash out a bit more (up to £16 a bottle), and we do go to France and bring back wine (most of what we buy is €4-12 a bottle). The wine offered here is Blossom Hill brand, and I have to admit that I have never drunk it before … well I have now! I had a glass of the white, which was not distasteful, it was inoffensive, it was light, it was cold, but there was little depth to the flavour and no complexity, being (at best) “very ordinary”. This is not a moan, it was entirely expected, and given their clientele preferences, there is no reason in the world for the pub to stock anything more elaborate or refined. The wine was cheap and we had to order a large glass plus two (half pints) of soda and lime in which to spend the minimum of £5 for card payments (we had no cash on us). We were kindly advised that the pub was due to close at 20:00, but we had previously noticed that there was a garden and so we ventured out to explore. We couldn’t stay long because of the impending closing time. Also the garden at the back of the pub was in full shade, and it really wasn’t a warm enough evening to sit out. Apparently the garden is best at lunchtime and during the afternoon. If this review offends then I’m sorry, but it is the truth. We would like to call here on occasions when it is sunny to enjoy a soda and lime, or a coffee, whilst sat in the garden in the sunshine.

Started on bad foot with no one to seat us and then the waitress said they had little in the way of wine. We asked for the manager and when she came, she was brilliant. Explained that they were restocking but she brought all 3 wines they had left for us to try. The food was pretty good too. It is filled with a young noisy crowd so expect to shout if you want to speak to your companion

If you love the steamed-up windows of a traditional chippy on a cold evening, and a paper wrapper brimming with tasty chips, Cod upon Thames is for you. The staff are friendly and chatty, the fish is good, the chips are even better (or should that been even batter?), and it’s only the stark décor and brutalist interior that denies this little local treasure the full star rating. Maybe it's the oil, or the way they cut them, but the chips are plump and flavoursome. Burnished metal walls make it feel like you’re in a shipping container, and the counter is so high it’s only possible to glimpse the staff. But let’s focus on the food. It’s the usual mixture of bangers (some in batter), chicken, burgers and fish ‘n’ chips. Standard fish and chips is under seven quid, pies are £2.40, and you can get chip butties (£1.60), cheesy chips for £3 and standard chips – a good-sized portion – for £1.80. Extras include onion rings, mushy peas and baked beans, and Cod upon Thames also does pineapple fritters and curry sauce. Soft drinks are housed in a large fridge at the far end.

We met with friends because of the restaurant's proximity to Farringdon. We started off seated outside but as it got colder and then started raining we moved indoors The restaurant has a great atmosphere and it was a shame that on a Friday evening there were so few diners Our server was really good, cheerful and chatty We had started with glasses of house white - it was so good we asked to see what it was - Grillo from Sicily We then moved onto Chianti with the meal The menu is short and interesting and we really struggled to choose. We had sourdough and buter to nibble on whilst choosing Two had the ham hock terrine with toast which was chunky and tasty with a pear picallili I had the barbequed mackeral which came with asparagus and little sudges of mayo and roe - nice For mains we had bavette steak with fries, the flat iron Holstein chicken that came with a small side salad and a mushroom risotto Sides of fries were excellent and a green salad was very fresh and crisp with a great dressing We finished with a rhubarb brulee and a banoffi shortbread with ice cream We were all very please with teh food, teh wine, the ambience and teh service An excellent find

At the end of the Penrhyn Bar & Crill (which has plenty of outdoor seating), then Penrhyn Ice Cream Parlour has a good selection of ice creams - they even have ice cream for dogs. Covid regulations are observed; hand sanitiser is available and masks must be worn. Outside seating, at socially distanced tables, is available and, if you get tired of queuing for your ice cream, there are games machines available.

Came here for a takeaway after hearing the place was under new management, so wanted to give it a try. The fish and chips was really nice, the batter was nice and thin and tasted relatively healthy. I would like to come back

Small, no frills, friendly cafe in the centre of Ripley. Cheap eats galore all served quickly and efficiently. We had a fried egg roll and a chip butty - both really good. And we just had to have 'lunch pudding' (my husbands term!) - its never too early for sponge pudding and custard!? Well worth a visit. You won't leave hungry!

We visited in the first week of opening so there was still a sense of things settling down but our tuna mayo rolls and cakes were delicious and there is a very good gluten free offer. Mrs B has a clear vision of what she wants to create, a modern take on a traditional tea room good food catering for all tastes and needs at the heart of it. Good luck to her
