Two visits over the last few days. Pleasant staff, decent beer and nice atmosphere but nowhere to sit - the first time all the tables in the pub were reserved for a quiz, the second time it was lad out, theatre-style, for the rugby. We cleared off to The Volunteer.

My husband and I visited for Sunday lunch whilst staying in Lyme Regis on holiday. From the moment we arrived we (including our dog) were made to feel at home. The staff were friendly, professional and knowledgeable and the interior stylish yet welcoming. The Sunday lunch menu is not extensive a handful of starters, a choice of either meat or vegetarian main and a choice of 3 desserts but as long as you are not fussy you are in for a treat as the food is all locally sourced and beautifully cooked. We paid £25 each for our main and desert which I think was excellent value.

St Austell Brewery, this is not one of your best examples. Service is hit and miss, at points, really not good. The front of house staff seemed more worried about getting their own dinner over the diners. Chefs up and down to the bar consistently. Food is average at best. Be careful what you order as they may just change some of the elements of the dish and hope you don't notice!

We chose this outlet for a fish and chips lunch as it indicated that it does gluten free fish and chips. This turned out to be fish without the batter when we had hoped that they used a gluten free batter and a separate fryer. I hope that they don't just remove the batter after cooking as this will lead to problems over the GF description if experienced by someone with full Coeliac disease. So far as the general standard is concerned I have had better crispier batter with the same for the chips and the mushy peas are a sloppy mix, with far better and the Red Lion Beaminster

I thought we should give this place a try having read the reviews......all I can say is that we must have gone to a different place than they all did. Yes the 'owner' is a nice chap but the other two members of staff were somewhat less engaging. First of all please be advised that the novel aspect of this place is that you get to pour your own beer from taps set into the wall.....initially great fun but this soon turned to frustration as it is virtually impossible to get a full pint as the beer (when we went) was far too lively meaning that you seem to pour away more than actually goes into the glass. .....and there were no staff on hand to help out . So on the night that we went all 3 tables had folks sitting there with half full glasses, each taking turns to revisit the taps and attempting to top their glasses up. Personally I made 4 trips and am convinced I never actually got a full pint......and by the way the beer is pretty good but at £5 a pint is somewhat overpriced....presumably because most of it end up on the floor hence they have factored into the price a huge degree of spillage As regards the food we ordered 2 meals which were both supposedly based on tagliatelle pasta.....both arrived with spaghetti and no comments or excuses were provided. As spag bol goes my dish was underwhelming....cheap, yes but not what I had expected nor wanted. So if you want to pay £5 a pint and spill beer over your shoes and then pick something from the menu which might appeal but acknowledge that something different will most likely be presented then this is the place for you!

Hotel has a good location overlooking Lyme Bay with a nice garden to relax and direct access to the beach ( although via a steep slope). Our review is based on the £345 per night, dinner, bed & breakfast charge. The hotel in our view cannot justify these prices. It looks nice inside, wooden floors everywhere and staffed by very friendly staff. Very young ones. No sign of a manager. Our room (2) overlooked Lyme Bay, average size with a very small bathroom. Duvets on our twin beds too narrow. We stayed for 2 nights. Dinner on the first night was terrible. Tough meat and a selection of fish that was hardly defrosted. Asparagus ( in October?) that were not cooked. Terrible presentation. I suggest the chef goes to the nearby Victoria Hotel in Sidmouth to see how food should be presented. The next night was slightly better. For breakfast one has to do everything oneself. Get your own tea or coffee, not forgetting to bring your cup, do your own toast not forgetting to take your tiny plate with you etc. £345 per night! Parking is charged for at £10 per night and it is still a bit of a nightmare to park. When we booked a month before we had to pay for the first night upfront and told this is not refundable; it all seems a bit calculated at the Alexandra Hotel.
