We often call in here on our cycle rides for a cuppa and bacon sandwich or full English - The food is always really good and well-cooked, and the welcome warm and friendly. A superb cafe!

Our first visit to this Upham Inns pub. The food was good, albeit expensive, but there are too many niggles that let it down. I booked on-line and was surprised to find that I had to choose between the set menu and a la carte before the system allowed the booking!! That's really off-putting - never had that before; why put an unecessary blocker in the way?. Then on arriving we found that the car parking space is very small and was already full despite the pub being half empty. The parking issue should be added to their website. Might it be possible to buy some land? The ambience is a rather dated "typical local". Plain wood tables and paper napkins, not linen, albeit good quality ones. There are lots of photos on the website, but many go back to 2012; that’s 13 years ago!! Hardly good modern marketing or reassuring to potential customers. The welcome was warm and friendly. But ordering was somewhat chaotic as they seem to be having trouble with a new menu and with their ordering system. We were only offered the a la carte menu, not both. The menu itself is quite extensive with a good range of dishes. Also available on-line but some without prices there. As starters we chose the crab and shrimp muffin, tasty but a rather small portion and very expensive at £15.80, and the mussels (£11.90) which were good. But I had to ask for a bowl for the shells and a spoon for the broth, both came promptly and with a finger bowl of water - again good but those should have been provided from the start. For mains we chose haddock & chips (£20.50 and a good size) and the special of roast hake with mussel chowder, that was very good but again I had to ask for a spoon. I often choose a ribeye steak but the ribeye here is eye-wateringly expensive at £37 from memory, and that's for 8oz not the usual 10 oz which pro-rata would be £46. For comparison a 10 oz ribeye at a Beefeater is £18.99 and at Texas Steak House (Ropley) is £20.95; both are of good quality; further, the Texas has 100% 5-star TA reviews. We did consider wine but again found NV Prosecco at £37 and Merlot & Malbec at £43/44 a bottle, far too expensive, so stayed with a bottle of sparkling water. For dessert a Bakewell tart and a mini dessert with coffee. The ladies’ toilet was reported by my wife as very cramped. The Food Standards Agency Hygiene Rating is a 5, the top mark; excellent. The management seem to reply to all reviews which is excellent, few do, but it's also noticeable that of the 875 reviews on TA only 55% are at the top 5-star level so clearly room for improvement. So, overall, part very good but too many issues so 3 stars on balance. £98 in total including a 10% service charge automatically added to the bill. The day after our visit Uphams sent us a survey request. That’s good, but after four attempts the survey still wouldn’t load. For the fourth attempt I let it run for longer which resulted in this message from my top-rated Bitdefender Internet Security software:- “Dangerous page blocked for your protection.” Ouch. We won't be adding the Thomas Lord to our list of regular restaurants as it doesn’t really deliver value for money or a relaxed and stress-free overall experience.

This comment is from ‘the poor wife’ you patronisingly refer to in your response to our previous feedback. Our ‘FairObservaions’ are joint opinions as I don’t normally feel the need for a separate platform. Let me clarify some of the inaccurate statements in your response to our feedback: At no time did my husband ignore me, on entering the premises, he did ‘wander round the bars’, mainly to see if there was another soul in the eerily empty building. At no time was I ‘in tear’ [sic] as you put it. I was however, extremely annoyed that despite advising us to leave, you would not refund me the cost of my meal or our drinks which were impossible to consume in the hostile atmosphere. I might however have shown signs of ‘in fear’, having just escaped the wrath of ‘Loony’ as my husband rightly calls him (I don’t know which one of you is Yates, maybe that’s you). As for your comment that we left the car park, nearly hitting a white car, I don’t understand, as we arrived and left on foot, our car being at Exton some three miles away. I think it’s probably that you’re confusing us with another disgruntled couple. I now await your characteristic badly written, rude response to this missive about our worse ever dining (or none dining) experience.

I booked a room at this hotel through Agoda. Big, big mistake. Avoid that site like the plague. They have all the tricks in the trade to avoid you communicating with them. I needed to cancel the booking because I found that the hotel was much further from my destination than I had realised. Tried through Agoda. no chance. So tried to phone hotel. First time after three long attempts a waitress answered and said she couldn't cancel a booking but the owner will be back in 2 hours, She will give him a message. He didn't phone back. Next day, I tried to phone them three times. Each call timed out. I am 84 and use hotels frequently, usually 3 star or above at least 10 - 15 times each and every year since I was 20. The place is clearly a pub / restaurant which runs a few rooms B&B on the side - very unprofessionally have never experienced this degree of non-contact ability.

We regularly visit here and always like to stop for food but came today and how disappointing, the menu had been changed and is VERY limited now and they no longer offer any form of dessert and have taken away all milkshakes… if you would like a burger or pizza then your fine but that’s about as far as menu stretches… I may add staff are very helpful and are working very hard… but it’s not worth the money to enter anymore as was charged £5 for entering the car park.
