Really disappointed to find the restaurant closed after booking the same day online. The sign in the window said due to a technical issue they were closed for a few days, but they should have also closed the booking system and we wouldnt have wasted our time driving to Pangbourne

We were delighted with our visit to this friendly and authentic restaurant. There are monthly specials to augment a good wide ranging menu, strong in pizza also (but no eponymous mussels to be seen?). The welcome and service are first class.. Highly recommended. Book to be sure of a table.

Booked to have dinner at The Herd for my husband’s 50th birthday. It was the first time that we have been to The Herd and were very impressed with the food. Gigi performs her magic, by cooking your steak in eye-shot. We asked for our chateaubriand to be medium-rare and it was perfect, which does not always happen in some places. Was well worth the visit and will definitely be back. The only negative, was that the room was a bit chilly when we arrived.

Excellent food, with very friendly and attentive service. Hidden gem behind deceptive facade.

The Elephant Hotel is in a fantastic location, right by the river and nestled amongst some wonderful shops, pubs and restaurants. The location really couldn’t be better. With that, the value for money is fantastic, especially if you book one the ‘offer’ packages which, in our case, meant breakfast was included and we enjoyed a discount on the dinner meal. The room, as others have said, does feel a little tired, but, for the money, I can’t really complain. The bed was large and comfy enough, although the pillows were a little flimsy, even after recruiting the spares from the cupboard to try and provide more support. The bathroom was decent, although I struggled to get hot water from the shower at around 8:30am in the morning. The provided toiletries were lovely, though. Dinner in the ‘Babar’ (as we were there with our dog) was a great experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. The steaks we ordered were top notch and cooked perfectly to our request. The only thing I would say is that the staff seemed a little shy when ordering cocktails. My main negative was the experience dealing with the main reception desk. At check-in, we were really given any information related to our specific package, e.g. that breakfast was included, what time it was, or where it was; that we had an allowance towards dinner; that we had a late checkout; or really anything other than out room key and number. There is definitely room for improvement here. On that, as part of the package, our dog was supposed to receive a complimentary breakfast but we were never asked about this so it went missing. Indeed, I had to claim back the dinner allowance the following day after paying for the meal in full the night before which, although partly my fault, would have been avoided with better communication. All in all, a great experience and I would return as it’s a fantastic option for a stay with a dog! Having access to the garden area directly from our room is also a wonderful plus.

UPDATE: Six months later I went in again assuming the wifi had been fixed. Nope. Still not wifi LOL. I asked them to reset the router and they couldn't be bothered. Hopeless. It'll be a YEAR before I got back in there again if at all. Stay away. Well if you are one of the many people like me who take their laptops to coffee shops to work, and depend on the wifi, forget it. The wifi at Costa Pangbourne never works and despite being repeatedly asked, they do nothing to fix it. What's worse, the mobile (4G) connection in the centre of Pangbourne is zero so you are unlikely even to be able to use your phone to connect to the Net. Instead, just sit there and enjoy your overpriced coffee.

I placed an order via uber eats and realised my telephone number was incorrect I tried to politely call the restaurant to inform them but they refused delivery unless I paid a delivery charge which was not incurred via uber eats. I tried to query if they will deliver my food regardless as if I had not called into the restaurant I would not have received the information. The call handler was very rude and hung up on me twice when trying to understand what was happening with my order. Really poor service, all I wanted was an indian :(

This cafe was a great find. Nice clean tables and friendly staff. We ordered simple cooked breakfasts which were prepared quickly. The food was very good indeed. Good value. Highly recommend.
