Be if a sunny but cold February or a sweltering summer, the hotel is perfect with its modern touches to the olde worlde charms. The restaurant staff are polite, informed and attentive without the overbearing ‘is everything alright?’ intrusion. We have had very good meals, but also the occasional hiccup with the food falling a little short. During our last visit the fish pie lacked the essential ingredient of fish and as the waiter noted on clearing the table, that looks ‘crispy’ around the edge as indeed it was. This wonderful location, and smart restaurant does itself a dis service by serving Cod and chips not on a simple plate but adding a piece of grease proof paper(?) al la fish and chips shop style. My pet hate is a plate of food served in mini pots with the expectation that one assembles the food themselves. This time was no exception, peas, tartar sauce, chips all came in little pots and the fish on the aforementioned grease paper. I simply don’t understand why such a good restaurant would want to compete with the local chippy or indeed invite comparison. Put the food on the plate and left the chef and ingredients do the talking.

It was a very damp and showery morning and we weren’t sure if the restaurant was even open! But we tried the door and it was . The lady on the bar asked the kitchen if they were still serving breakfast (it was only 10.10am) and they were. We sat down and there was a very damp smell in the room. Which was a little off putting but We ordered full English and Vegan breakfast, both with coffee. The coffee were served piping Hot which was lovely as usually they go cold before breakfast is served. But breakfast came and coffee was still hot!. Breakfast was also really hot and delicious, good local produce and served with a smile. Deffo come back again! Serves lunches and coffee and cake too so worth drying at different times of the day.

Family went for Sunday lunch. Prices are very high for roast dinners and there was nothing special at all about the food. The meat was poor. Very fatty and not much meat even when paying a supplement for “all the meats”. All in all quite the disappointment. When factoring the price tag it’s even worse. On the positive side the staff were lovely, attentive and kind. Just let down the by the kitchen and price. Also had tartiflette which contained no cheese which is not a tartiflette, it’s just potatoes!

Had a fantastic time here last year so came back in half term with my mum and kids … absolutely awful. Rude staff, 25 mins wait for barista coffee/ tea … sat outside as people literally arguing over tables. Staff standing around chatting while only one person did the barista work … as someone who does this as a living I would have thought they would have all helped and got the drinks out quicker ?!

Went for a meal with our small dog whilst on holiday. They don't take bookings, had hoped they may make an exception as I was in a walking boot and on crutches and explained we'd be walking from our cottage so wanted to ensure it wasn't a wasted walk. They didn't - to be fair we did get in as was quiet. Told on arrival at 8.05 that they only do fish n chips after 8. We weren't told this earlier, but meal was decent. However "dog friendly" is not an accurate description. Our small dog tried to get on my lap and I asked if he could sit on the seat if I put him on his own blanket - landlord said no and claimed he didn't make the rules. Who does then? , but ok, fair enough. We then asked them to put some water in our dogs travel bowl. We were told only if he goes outside to drink it , as they don't want dogs sloshing water everywhere! I have never heard anything so ridiculous! It's a pub, spillages happen - and it was a hard tiled floor. What happens if someone spills a pint I wonder! We later in our trip went to the white horse and the manor hotel, which are more upmarket, and they were truly welcoming of us and our dog. In fact our dog tipped his water bowl over on the carpet in the manor hotel bar and they just said - oh no problem, don't worry. Will not return as we didn't feel valued as customers and our dog was tolerated, rather than welcomed.

We have visited this pub a couple of times over the last few weeks as it’s on the route of a walk from Cley up to the nature reserve. On both occasions, we only chose from the lunch light bites, which are on the back of a beer mat. On the first visit, the food was excellent. On the 2nd visit, our food was just about warm, although it was still tasty enough. We felt that it could have been served straight away, rather than sitting in the kitchen. Our other halves were pleased with the choice of ales.

This used to be a very nice traditional pub, with a good menu - what a difference a year makes! Bar moved, decorated in dull blue colour making the place look drab & uninviting. Barely anything on the menu bar fish & chips! Only 4 other diners in the place & like us were driven out due to thumping drum & bass music --- is that necessary at lunchtime?!? Won't be going back anytime soon.
