The restaurant is clearly very popular, but for me, it was more style than substance.
The good points. Service is very attentive. Lots of team, that seem keen to ensure you have a good time. Food was OK, here is my issue. It's not as good as it could be for the price and image it portrays.
The dishes were all OK on the set menu we chose (£69pp).
The houmous was precisely as one would expect – straightforward and unfussy. The grilled halloumi, however, offered a brighter note, the accompanying yuzu dressing a vibrant counterpoint to the salty cheese. Ribs followed, again competently executed. The single fillet of sea bass, though cooked with precision, felt somewhat diminutive when shared between two, a sentiment echoed by the modest portion of baby potatoes served alongside.
The negatives. A recurring issue that detracted from the overall experience was the tepid temperature of several courses. While not cold enough to warrant a return to the kitchen, the lack of proper heat suggested the inherent challenges of orchestrating service for a considerable number of covers.
Drinks are pricey, cocktails at £15+ and any wine mostly £40+.
It's loud, even for a busy restaurant. I actually quite liked the background music, but it didn't help in making everyone louder to be heard.
It felt as though a large portion of the guests are there for an Instagramable, big night out. Not for the dining experience as a whole.
£225 for 2, I left feeling it was fine, but wouldn't rush to revisit.
We had a great meal here last Saturday evening.
Glad there was a table available, even though nearly all the tables had a reserved sign on them (don't let this put you off popping in to check)
The food was really good & a good selection of drinks were available. All for a very reasonable price.
The only thing stopping me leaving a five star review was the service.
Side dishes arrived a bit randomly with no explanation of who they were for & the main courses arrived before we'd finished the starters.
Clearing up was a bit hap hazzard too, dishes were taken away before we'd all finished.
But apart from that we all had a great evening, the food was great & we will definitely be going again.
The owner was very welcoming & friendly.
Looking forward to our next visit.
The food here is excellent, the portion size of the small plates is generous, it's easy to over order!
Thank goodness they are happy to provide take away boxes.
Staff were all great too, looking forward to our next visit.
Went here for the first time to have a late lunch, coffee was lovely and so was the service - but ! The bread for the club sandwich and the eggs Benedict was very plain white and dry, for the price I was expecting a nice granary or sourdough for the club sandwich and a light fluffy muffin for the eggs Benedict. I think for a place that has special cakes if serving other food should put the same effort into the bread itself served on.
We chose the 12 course meal with an added course and dessert, and it was worth every penny! Every plate was beautifully plated, and phenomenal. The head chef, James came out to explain several of the dishes in detail, from what makes the ingredient unique, to how it was sourced and prepared. The explanations of every dish made this a fascinating experience that set it apart from other Michelin restaurants since it’s never the chef, and the plates are not always explained in detail. The other servers/chef were all kind and friendly as well.
We also loved how certain ingredients were paired with preparations that you would never think of, such as pea miso or barley koji. Being Japanese, I loved how old Japanese methods were used on untypical ingredients.
Lastly, James and Darren (sommelier) chose a few wines for us, and they went perfectly with our meal. The wine pairing would be a good choice at this restaurant. The dishes are spaced with enough time that you wouldn’t have to rush drinking every glass, and their wines are incredible.
If you are visiting Ambleside, this restaurant is a must! It was the highlight of our time in the UK, and will definitely be back if we’re ever in Ambleside again.
My partner booked this place for our anniversary, thinking it’d feel like a piece of Spain. The restaurant was packed — everyone chatting over tapas, sipping wine, thinking they were in Barcelona.
But to me, it felt like a very British version of Spain: clean, well-run, and expensive. £8 for patatas bravas made with British potatoes sums it up. It looked right, it ticked all the boxes, but it didn’t feel right.
Still, if you’ve never been to Spain, maybe it’s enough. For me, it was just a reminder of how far home really is.
Llevé a mi hermanita a comer a Elvet steakhouse y no voy a mentir definitivamente volveré a menudo. Mosh era un anfitrión absolutamente increíble que nos trató como su huésped en su casa y el personal era absolutamente encantador, amable y extrovertido, honestamente mi hermana y yo disfrutamos de nuestra noche
The promise of shoes in the shop next door drew me in! We had a lovely late lunch sitting outside with our dog. The dog was given fresh water and multiple treats (with our permission). Staff were friendly and efficient and the food was freshly made and tasty! The views were stunning!
Not quite sure why Tripadvisor seems to think it’s temporarily closed until further notice!
