Great food, excellent service! The lad at the counter was so very nice and helpful, got the best fish and chips I've ever had (though I'm a tourist and haven't had that many) portion was huge and just for £12.5 only downside is that there is only one table inside right by the frying station, but there is bench outside and it was actually quite nice to eat there

In short: The best chippy I've been to in years and i'm glad I took a chance while visiting the city, had just walked in off the street this evening after seeing a show. Sampled the chips and the sausage and they were top tier. Would love to try their fish offerings if get the chance to return as I'm sure will also be great. Staff welcoming and helpful too. Takes cash and card.

This was by first time having British fish and chips, and this was the perfect experience of tasting the dish. The beer battered fish was so delicious, and the vinegar sauce over the chips paired perfectly. The cut of the chips were the right size and cooked to proper consistency. We also ordered the black pudding fritters and it tasted simply wonderful. If I could, I would come back again. This was a great filling meal after a long day of walking.

Amazing chippies! Owner patiently explained the menu items so that we got exactly what we wanted. Lovely place. Will be coming back.

Very good fish and chips, chips are great, fish is also really good although could be filleted a bit better as have had a few bones but might have just been unlucky.

Service was really fast. The fish was a bit greasy but it was still delicious. I loved their chips with cheese. Very good, though the cheese was unmelted on one side.

Lovely spot. Warm welcome from the owner. The food was great, huge portion in the haddock and chips which comes with a mini tartar sauce. My only regret is not trying the haggis after seeing all the other reviews!

What a great find! I'd recommend anyone in Edinburgh to head down to Spencer's Chippy! The fish was fresh and really well cooked. The deep fried haggis was delicious and the chips were excellent. The staff there showed us the different options regarding portion size and what we'd get. We were on our way to the pub so Spencer took our order and it was ready to collect exactly when we wanted it on our way home. What a great service! Go for the gravy with the haggis and the homemade tartar sauce with the fish. Really good value for money too. Fantastic.

An essential address for fish & chips lovers! The dishes are delicious, with a wide choice and generous portions. Little extra: the possibility of choosing the type of cooking oil, a rare and appreciated detail. The service is rather fast. The warm welcome from Spencer, always smiling and friendly, makes the experience even more pleasant.

I promised the owner that I would write an opinion - he would have gotten it even without the promise. This is some of the finest fish and chips I've ever eaten. Nice, juicy fish, fresh and thickly cut chips, the batter is probably the best part - it's crunchy on the outside but soft inside. Yet, it's not greasy. My order was quickly prepared, I had a great chat with Spencer, and finally, my food was fabulous. I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area!

The last time i ate here, I got food poisoning from the gluten free batter :(

Can someone explain to me what the problem is they have with the sauces now? The fish and chips were very tasty, but why are they so stingy with the tartar sauce? WHY!!! Do you think that by reducing the sauces for customers you are saving money? Well, let me tell you that you are losing customers! The same goes for the chicken wrap; I had to add mayonnaise and a little ketchup myself to give it some flavor because for that price, it was bland, tasteless, and all dry It looks like rabbit food

The best fish & chips I have ever tried. His fame is everything and It truly refers to what it is. Their batter is delicious, subtle, with flavor, their homemade potatoes are delicious and natural! A unique and special flavor, at a very good price and a large quantity. It's perfect, I can't wait to go back

The smallest fish I have seen been served in my life! You are getting half portion of fish which you would normally get in every Fish and Chips shop. Also very greasy, in my humble opinion oil was way too cold to cook the fish. Chips ok but overall very poor!

Very small portion of fish very greasy more batter than fish and the potato fritters were undercooked and greasy. How you won an award is a mystery for the money I spent it was a total rip off.

The fish was not good, really thick batter in parts and then overcooked, so it was like a brick in parts and dry as a bone, it wasn't edible. The chips were cold, and the veggie burger looked pathetic for what it's worth. Definitely won't go back.

Demolished my meal and left nothing behind. Came here for my first ever chippy experience in the UK. It was made fresh to order and topped with the classic vinegar and salt. The fish was so good. Soft inside, crispy outside. The chips were great. Even the tartare sauce was unusually good. I think it was the onions in it. Gonna be hard to top this

Food is the best one can get. Shame it is quiet far from where I live and they do not deliver and I have to go and pick it up myself but it is defo worth it

“Fry barn” atmosphere, a little less northern-style, and a little more classy. The owners are adorable and the portions generous. We had their Fish and Chips (11 pounds per menu), the breading was excellent, in addition to a really attractive price. The fries are very good, word of Lille. If you're looking for a quality fish, this isn't where you'll find the finest, but it does the job well. Plan to take the dish home or find a bench nearby, as there is only a small table for eating there.

The service was very friendly and accommodating, we immediately felt welcome. We ordered 2 versions of fish & chips and found them extremely tasty. The fish tasted very tender and fresh. A very good choice to try authentic fish & chips!

He vivido en Edimburgo durante más de 30 años y he probado la mayoría de las tiendas de chips del centro de la ciudad a lo largo de los años. Chippy By Spencer es fácilmente la mejor calidad, y el mejor precio, y servicio de alta calidad. Incluso cosas pequeñas como conseguir una rodaja de limón y una pequeña tarrina de salsa tártara con el excelente pescado con papas fritas es algo que no se molesta en incluir. Además, lo más importante, la comida siempre se cocina fresca cuando se ordena. La mayoría de las tiendas de papas fritas cocinan pescado y otros artículos en lotes de más de 5 y luego los dejan en bandejas calientes esperando a ser vendidos, lo que puede significar que obtiene un pescado seco / salchicha, etc. Spencer sólo lo cocina cuando lo pides. ¡La espera de 5 a 10 minutos vale la pena por comida fresca y sabrosa!

The mixed selection is the best creation of any chippy ive ever been to. Every item is delicious and you get a good amount of all the various bits and the tartar sauce is a nice restaurant standard. Without a doubt best fish and chips Edinburgh has to offer

Heard from a good friend about this chip shop, I drove to the other side of the city to try it and was not disappointed! I was impressed with how quickly we were served as they were notably busy - all food was made fresh in front of us. I’m not normally a fish guy but we had fresh soft and tasty fish, freshly made pizza with plenty topping & a smoked sausage supper! Will be back again soon, thanks for sorting us out with a quality dinner on a Saturday night

Not really a place to dine in, only one table but the food was really good. I tried haggis for the first time as a supper (with chips); the haggis came in the most lovely light batter & although I don’t particularly like lamb, I enjoyed it with the chippy sauce which cut the greasy/lamb taste quite effectively.

Good food at a fair price.. :) I recommend the first item - buttered fish with chips. Generally, they expect you to take your food to go, but there is also a corner where you can eat on-site if you want.

After a long drive up from England to Edinburgh it was a pleasant surprise to find a chatty Englishman serving great fish and chips . The food was great and cooked to perfection. I will be back in the future and will recommend to anyone I know coming up here for a break or work trip .

The owner who was on the line is a horrible man. A real scumbag who bullies customers and delivers weak food. The food was so bad that we just dumped it in a tesco dumpster. The review ratings are totally a sham. Definitely used a service to boost ratings... Avoid at all costs.

So delicious we went twice on a one week trip! It's a chip shop, so mostly takeaway, or there's one little table. Sadly there's no park near that is open to the public as far as I know. But all that doesn't matter when the fish and chips are so good!!

We got the fish and chips and the fried haggis. They asked if we want vinegar and salt on top. The fish was HUGE and really crispy. The inside was flaky and not dry. The fries on the other hand weren't my favorite. They weren't crispy but the inside was really pillowy. But they were really generous with the portion size. The fried haggis was eye openingly delicious. It was my first time having haggis and boy I was not disappointed. It was super soft like pate and tasted slightly like it too. Loved the crispy contrast of the outside. Overall I would recommend this place for the fresh fried fish and the fried haggis. The two making the food at the counter are also super nice and friendly.

Without exaggeration, the best fish and chips of my life! The fish falls apart in your mouth and the tartar sauce is amazing. Unfortunately you can't sit down there.

Went for a fish and chips and this place didn’t disappoint. So much better than my locally chippy in London. The customer service is extremely friendly and the fish melted in my mouth. This is a must-go to place in Edinburgh.

I’m not the one to leave a review but I have to at this place. I ordered fish and chips and by far the best one I’ve tried. Batter’s light and crispy the fish is nice and fresh same with the chips. Everything was great! Definitely will be back before I leave Edinburgh.

We were greeted by a very friendly man when we walked in and our order was taken and ready within 6 min. The place was spotless, the staff very friendly and the fish and chips were so fresh and good. Sad we tried this out last day here otherwise there would have been a second trip.

This should be a 5. Everything is fresh. The menu is very broad and inventive. Its a little gem. I'm so happy I found it. Its easy to miss it. Awesome.

I have had fish and chips in Canada that were outstanding. These were very greasy. I would not rate these as good fish and chips personally.

Order arrived quickly. Fish and chips were decent but fish wasn't as crispy a batter as expected from your usual fish and chips takeaway. Miniscule amount of tartare sauce I would have expected a bit more. Did come with a good amount of salt and vinegar packs though. Curry sauce was okay but the gravy was really runny and quite tasteless.
