Just popped in to get some fish and chips thought i would try it don't get alot for what you pay for got like 10 chips with a cod and witch is really bad and the staff was rude at the till

I've been getting takeaways from their since the 80s but decided to eat in the restaurant on Wednesday 30th October 2024 the chicken and chips and mushy peas and pot of tea and ice cream was excellent as i expected and all staff was well organised and professional and very helpful throughout my time in the restaurant thank you for the great service .

Just the best fish and chips anywhere. Great service and always so accommodating. Yes, it's a little more than some however I would rather eat that quality of food over anything else available. WELL DONE 👍

It's fantastic, best cod n chips in south London. I've been going for years. It's rammed on Friday and Saturday nights. Queues and 15-20 mins waiting. Car Park gets full. It's one of the few places I go to where I put up with all the inconvenience to get a table in the restaurant for high-quality fish n chips. I love the homemade mushy peas. a portion should be bigger in my view. I think they should stop with the plastic bags environmentally poor. The paper bags are fine, thick, and sturdy. The quality of the fish is unbeatable and worth £10.

I used to love this place when I first moved to Croydon, but over the years the prices have risen so much its now as expensive to have 4 x cod and chips, as it is to go to a nice restaurant. I popped in the other day for cod and chips x 2 with mushy peas and it was best part of £30 quid. I understand inflation and cost of living and all that, but the prices are becoming ridiculous. They do taste good but its a once in a while treat now.

McDermott’s is the ONLY place I go for Fish & Chips in the UK. No local pub seasons its Cod like McDermott’s. Their handmade fish cakes are delish too.

Avoid them ! a Very rude kitchen person peeping into what customers are doing at the till and asking us to stand outside in the queue when they were only a few people inside. In the cold weather, i was asked to stand outside with the child. very poor customer service, when all they need to do is to just use the common sense. will never buy anything from them. They have become too arrogant. avoid them!!

Infrequently visit due to the long distance but on this rare occasion so happy to see that the Standards have been kept high . This is the BEST fish and chips in London and contender for top 10 in UK. Fish is fresh , chips are perfectly cooked , service is homely and prices are reasonable for 2024. I treasure this place dearly.

Hi If it's not the best fish and chips around here, I would love to know where it is, I have had a lovely meal every time I have been, and I have been going for years . Every time we go, we have had great fish and chips and would recommend it highly to anyone. The restaurant is always worth going to as the staff are very friendly service is very good and enjoy the atmosphere 👍👏so if you want to have good fish and chips takeaway or in the restaurant I would recommend going here child friendly and kids meals are good value for your money 👍 😋

I went to this restaurant on 23/08/2024 with my friends. I asked if I could have a kids meal as I knew I wouldn't be able to finish the food and I was told I was not able to. So, myself and my friend decided to share a fish as the fish would've been too big for me to finish. The lady who took our order was lovely but she was informed by the "floor manager" that we are not allowed to share a meal and each person has to order their own meal. Ridiculous! I have never been to a restaurant where I cannot share a meal with someone. As someone who suffers with an eating disorder - big portions of food make me very anxious and uncomfortable. Especially in public places. For this reason, I will not be returning to this restaurant to eat in. There are plenty of reasons why people might want/need to share a meal. I don't agree that there should be a rule of every individual has to order something. Please reconsider your eating in rules!

I'm so disappointed lately, we have used this chip shop for many years, but portions are much smaller, and chips are not the same, greasy, and not cooked properly. It's such a shame as once was such a lovely chip shop. It's put me off coming back. Staff are always welcoming just a shame the food has gone down hill.

I have to say I was so disappointed the last time I came here for fish and chips one month ago. fish tasted good but it was so small but the chips were real bad. Considering I was there 20 mins after opening saturday and being third in line, they filled my chip bag with nothing but tiny little end cuts, crispy and hollow with a few large 'nice' chips. The tiny end cuts should go into the bin and not into the customers' bag. Considering I have praised this establishment so many times and even when friends have visited in the past Ive gone straight to this chip shop for the best in Surrey. Truly, if this is the sing of things to come I will deffo be going elsewhere for my Fish and Chips.

I reviewed this place some time back. Couple of years ago, I didnt enjoy it at all. But recently, I ate their fish and chips, and was really impressed. Fish tasted so gooood...best I tasted...curry sauce can improve....I will 100% recommend it to ky family and friends

After raving to my daughter about your lovely fish and chips was bitterly disappointed with my take out last night, my four cod and chips left a lot to be desired, the batter was so soft it slid off when serving, what happened to the crispy batter of past purchases will certainly think twice about using you again, was embaressing

Our choice for fish and chips, excellent quality of food. Their card reader wasn't working that night and no clear sign about cash only, luckily there is a ATM nearby.

I ordered cod and a small portion of chips, it comes with complimentary pickles and bread and butter. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the food was served quickly, our order arrived hot and not greasy, the fish was gorgeous and had crispy batter. The restaurant was clean and so was the toilet. The woman's bathroom had one cubicle it was large and accessible with hand rails and a low sink for wheelchair users. The price for my meal and drink was £18.36 but it was well worth the money I was full for hours. 10/10

This far inland, you won't find a better fish and chip shop. This family business deserves its many awards. Most appetites don't need more than one! McDermott's are the UK originators of fast food. And the well-oiled machine of the service team will produce your meal in record time with a smile and genuine good humour. For a special treat, enjoy this fayre fresh from the fryer in the spacious and welcoming restaurant. It is one of the best meals out you'll ever have. When my father was alive, we had takeaway every week and spent every Christmas Eve in the restaurant. It became part of our family routine. Since his parting we visit when we can and always receive a warm welcome and excellent food. Love this place and its people!

I have been going to this restaurant since I was born! I am now 33, and I am still my number 1 fish and chip shop in the world. My only words are utter perfection!!!!!! My grandparents first went to McDermotts when it first opened, 4 generations later, my daughter now enjoys her fish and chips in the very same restaurant (it's changed its decor in that time just to add). Honestly, staff are very professional and friendly (they are like extended family now). The fish is fresh and just delicious! I wouldn't find myself eating fish and chips anywhere else!

We thought we’d try this place as it has good reviews, however it was a disappointment. Ordered 2 small chips and 3 sausages to takeaway. One of the sausages, a battered sausage tasted horrible! Super fatty and cheap. Really small as well. The batter was also soggy and tasteless. We weren’t offered any salt n vinegar on our chips, it had been all packed up and I asked if any had been put on and she said that ‘people don’t always like it’. We do, yet we weren’t offered it and the food had all been packed up before we had a chance to get any on there. £14 for this meal. Won’t be going back for these reasons. The fish n chip shop next to Sanderstead station is much nicer.

Customers are enjoying the food and drink for a long time, and we all need our phones when we are out to be informed with our loved ones. During my visit, at least 3-4 customer needed to charge their phone, and they have been informed that sockets around the table are not for customers' usage.

I'm a long term customer, and McDermotts is brilliant everytime! A well established independent business with a strong local reputation, and an important presence in the local community. Customers are always greeted and assisted by the same team of friendly & helpful ladies behind the counter. Along with the kitchen staff, the staffing team are always very efficient and service is prompt. The whole venue and kitchen is always exceptionally clean. They have worked hard to ensure prices remain reasonable despite cost increases. The quality of the food is always great and exceptional. Please be aware that this estalishment is closed on certain days, and generally opening hours are earlier in the evening. This venue has a corresponding restaurant attached operating it the evening alongside the takeaway. They also offer takeway Lunchtime specials on busier days. They accept card payments with a minunim spend of £10. However, there is also a free cash point immediately next door at the Co-Op supermarket if needed. There is plentiful free parking at all times of the day immediately outside. I look forward to returning again soon.

A history of delicious fish and chips! BUT What’s happened to the chips in the last 3 weeks?? instead of the lovely tasty, crispy on the outside chips, the last two visits have produced rubbery chips with no flavour and no crispness at all. Please look at your supplier! The haddock and cod were their usual delicious standard. Update today: Many chips were bad with black on them, The cod was pre-cooked and dry. Such a shame when places go downhill!

Very good fish and chips light crispy batter soft fresh flaky fish decent portion size chips crispy fluffy and not greasy. Very busy from opening until closing but fast streamlined service in and out in under five minutes prices on the higher side but fair and not overpriced considering - personally I drive just over 3 miles and past 3 other fish and chip shops to specifically come here - wish they open another branch or two locally

Simply the best fish and chips for miles around! Fresh, tasty fish in a delicate (non-greasy) batter, perfectly cooked chips. Service was brilliant: friendly, helpful, attentive and efficient. Definitely go there but make sure you get there early as it is VERY popular!

Food is excellent, Service is excellent. Cleanliness is excellent. The portion size and price is not excellent. £15.80 for an adult size cod and chips, then another £1.80 for mushy peas. Best part of £20 quid for a chippy dinner. It is rather steep in my opinion. Add in a drink and a dessert and you're not far off £80 for a family of 4 for dinner. Definitely not a place to visit on the regular.

Outstanding fish and chips only choice was Cod. Although they had other fish choices on the menu the sound is very loud in the restaurant not a sit and talking venue. Eat and go.

Food is pretty good although the latest "teatime special" lacked fish within the batter. The service is the real problem. They spent so much time chatting amongst themselves that they missed part of our order. Went back again and nothing has got better. Prices are really high (over £10 for a small cod) and portions are tiny. Will not be going again.

Really really awful, cost £38 for 3 cod’s and two large chips. The two chips were tiny portions could see the bottom of the bag! Had to buy another one just to barely feed 3 people. Save your money!

Not sure what's happening with the chip portions these days, this is the second or third time I have hardly had any chips. I love this place but if they do not give a decent amount of chips next time I will go elsewhere. The prices have gone up since lockdown but the portion has got smaller. Sort it out or you will lose custom.

Fish and chips simply perfect. I asked for a gluten free battery which is fine for me as I'm intolerant. They are cooked in the same fryer as other products containing gluten and you can only get it in the restaurant. So delicious!

Embarrassing and has gone down hill. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a fish and chip take away for dinner. My husband went to order and after receiving the order he originally thought they'd forgotten the chips because of the size of the bag. No, there was a small amount of chips underneath, no where near enough to justify the price, or even serve as a portion. He then decided to add a large chips to the order to make up the chips. These were then put into a small bag, weighed (embarrassing) then a few chips were taken out, these were £3.50. What a rip off. We used to come here often for the great quality and portion size but haven't been in a few years after moving. The first clue should have been that there was nobody else in the shop. There used to be queue at opening time. The picture with the sausage was the 'large chips'. Way overpriced, avoid the disappointment

Last nights Fish and Chips HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST WE’VE EVER HAD!!! The chips were unbelievable the Cod just melted in your mouth the batter was so light and crispy PERFECT!!!

This was once an institution for fish and chips!. Today my experience was a total embarrassment. £14.60 for haddock and chips. The chips portion was smaller then a child portion and the oil retention in the fish itself was l awful. You should be ashamed. #ReputationMatters #NeverAgain

This is the best fish and chips by far however last night was very disappointing the chips have been changed we noticed this as soon as the plate was put down they looked different and tasted different to the point we never ate them when approached by staff we was told they are the new season potatoes ! Which they only use late at night to me they looked like and tested like frozen chips as they was a dry as ever ! The waitress was very apologetic about this and kept apologizing she could not take the cost of the chips off bill as they come with the fish !! Really the management should have come out and addressed the problem we have been going to this fish and chip shop for years along with most of there customers management take note we know what to expect when we order cod and chips you know how to deliver so why would you change what’s working Next time you use something different it’s important you inform you customers as we do know when it’s not the same

Menu prices are about 50% more expensive than advertised on their website an £18 order cost £31 fish was nice but large chips were just a normal sized portion and tasted old way too much money for the quality the same food is around £23 in nearby take away

We drive 30 minutes to get our fish and chips, it is well worth it. We have been coming for about 5 years and it's product is constantly excellent. Give it a try.

Warm welcome at the door. Seated quickly in a well decorated area. Drinks order taken right away and then the food order. Prices a little steep but the food, service and ambience were excellent so, as they say, you get what you pay for.
