The Eastney Tavern in Portsmouth

It's been a long time since I've visited the 'Shell House' Eastney Tavarn, it was brilliant evening 😊 The main reason was to share an evening with friends, just 4 of us a few drinks and some food We were *not* disappointed 👌 The bar staff were so friendly, the beer was spot on and the food was top class and the table service was very professional 🥳 Very reasonable priced too we couldn't fault it I'd highly recommend a visit, I'll be heading back very soon Thanks to all the staff for making our night memorable 😊😊😊 I loved the liver and bacon 😋

Looks like a cozy oldschool pub, but very spacious and with food served. An in-person visit fulfilled the expectations: lovely atmosphere, great people, and I have to admit I have not tried scampi as tasty, kind of blown away actually.

It was my local for many years a long time ago, so going back recently brought back a lot of fond memories. A lovely pub with a fantastic atmosphere and great food, what more could you ask for.

Our first time here today the 3 of us had roast beef as no lamb left really good food and staff really friendly very helpful if ask for anything wasn't too much trouble definately be back soon

Great Sunday lunch. Excellent portions and a great range of drinks in a traditional pub environment. Dog friendly too.

Went in for food didn’t have what we wanted witch was fine you can ask questions but after we said we didn’t want anything for 10 minutes of being sat down at the table across from the bar the staff was fully starring at us from across the bar talking to each other witch was extremely obvious they was talking about us staff made us feel uncomfortable personally if you went to this pub don’t ask questions or else you more than likely get eyes on you 24/7 absolutely ridiculous

Simple food perfectly executed 👌 you actually feel like some love has been put into it. Perfect local. Amazing hospitality from Robyn at the bar. ❤️

Very good food and a good choice of craft ales, both cask and keg choices. I don't like big screen TVs in pubs hence the four stars rating for atmosphere, each to their own, I know some people love watching sport whilst in a pub. Their staff always provide prompt and friendly service.

A good pub for local traditional beers

Whilst the Atmosphere, Decor and Service may all be good, the food unfortunately is nothing to shout about. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly pleasant but just nothing special. Ask for your lamb steaks to be cooked pink and they are totally stumped.

First time in years that I have been to this pub,we had Sunday lunch there, I had a vegetarian option (roasted beetroot and butternut squash Wellington) plus 7 veg more than enough for one

It’s easy to see why the Eastney Tavern remains so popular as staff are always so helpful And friendly Last Sunday, I was so impressed with my roast beef, which I’d asked for as gluten free/no potatoes! Normally, I’d only go for a carvery as plated gluten free roasts often have things taken off but not replaced (more veg etc) but this was generous and delicious, even tenderstem broccoli served and roast beef was delicious. My point for consideration would be to return to a dog area in the main pub as there are 3 main restaurant areas and dogs could be permitted in the side or main area ( it used to be this way many years ago.)

We visited as a family with two children for roast dinners. The food was perfect, came out hot and promptly. The staff are friendly and attentive.We will definitely be coming back again and again.

Stopped off here on a visit from Bedfordshire to meet my best mate. Had a lovely couple of hours in the pub. It was great to find a nice traditional pub with good atmosphere and reasonable prices. Friendly staff and will be back on my next visit.

Great place good value. They dealt with Gluten Free requirements very well.

Heard quiz nights at The Eastney Tavern were good, so went along with friends on Tuesday. Had a brilliant night and really enjoyed taking part in the games and questions.

We moved down here in 2014 and have been coming here since then..... Never had a bad pint or meal, Ever. This Sunday my in laws were down and they love it here to, 6 of us all fed n watered in a comfortable time, never rushed. Quality and Service A+...... Always, Genuinely best pub in Pompey and so glad it's on our doorstep.

Had a lovely family lunch for my dad's 95th birthday. The food was lovely (would recommend the chicken ballotine, absolutely delicious) The service was excellent, we brought in a birthday cake and staff were happy to provide a knife and napkins- definitely recommend this lovely pub!

We visited for my Gran’s 90th birthday. It was fantastic, the food was great our waitress was so lovely and pulled out all the stops to make it special. She came up to my gran as we were leaving and said hope you enjoy the rest of your birthday, really kind and welcoming. We often visit the pub with family at least a few times a year. Highly recommend!!!

This is our local pub and we know the food is good at The Eastney Tavern. We booked Sunday lunch for six. The meals were superb- well presented and a really good portion. We were attended to very well, great service and a good atmosphere. We must do again, soon.

A lovely meal yet again! We had the curry on a Thursday and it was very tasty. Plenty on the plate with poppadoms and naan bread with it. The waitress was lovely, friendly and helpful. We are always recommending this pub for the great food.

We took our Yorkshire relatives there for a meal and drinks, they thoroughly enjoyed it. Good atmosphere, wonderful service, every member of staff polite and helpful 👍

Have been a few times to eat and drink and the atmosphere is very welcoming. My family and friends have a variety of allergies and nutrition requirements and each time the staff are patient, supportive and informative. Love it everytime we go.

We have tried several times and found the same quality of service and taste in all of them. They are dog-friendly, so you never feel stressed when you go with your dog. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Finding a seat is not a problem unless it's on match days. So far, we have tried fish&chips, burgers, desserts, and beers, and they were all very delicious. In terms of service speed, price, ambiance, and taste, it's fantastic.

The Eastney Tavern is a gem! The cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food make it a must visit. I especially loved their local beer selection. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy some quality time with friends.

Fabulous Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. Huge portion of meat ( beef in my case, but the pork and crackling was massive too) roasties, Yorkshire, stuffing, five vegetables! Oh and squeeze on some gravy … Well cooked and presented. Good table service.

I had fish pie, plenty of delicious filling but the mash was just a lump of mash dumped on top. (No finesse) The strawberries and cream was not fresh cream (the squirty stuff). We ate it all and enjoyed it just felt it could have been a little bit better.

The provenance of the meat is next level. The veg freshly picked. The service endearingly saucy. Good selection of beers. Wine pairing pretty good too. A Go to place when entertaining uninitiated guests. Old school with a young heart. Pukka!

We chose lambs chops and sea bass, both dishes beautifully cooked and well presented and delicious and reasonably priced. Nice friendly quiet atmosphere.

Visited for lunch on a Friday. The Tavern wasn't too busy so a choice of seats were available. We were given menus with a good range of food and advised to order quickly if we wanted the lunchtime choices as these timed out soon. The helper/server took our orders and the food came quickly and was hot! Desserts followed. The friendly helper/server regularly came back to check all was OK. Recommend a visit if you've never been. (I also noted that live sports is advertised so another possible reason to visit.)

Have eaten ok food here in the past but my last experience was not a good one. The roast was not worth the money. It was more like a cafe roast dinner. The cauliflower cheese was just a pile of mush (see photo). I thought it was a bread sauce. When I asked about this, the waitress didn't even stop to discuss it but said over her shoulder "that's how it comes". She did eventually ask later how the dinner was and I mentioned the cauliflower again. She said she would speak to the chef and get another but it would probably be the same. She was right! The beef was also overcooked. One star as they didn't even care.

Lovely venue , but prices not updated on website. £16.50 is not good value for a roast and for what you get. Very disappointed this time.
