Eat on the Green

Mid Formartine, Aberdeenshire
08/03/2020: Ten of us attended our First Ladies day at EOTG, hopefully it will not be our last. The whole experience was amazing from beginning to end, the food and drink fabulous, service very good, staff very friendly and entertainment brilliant - totally recommend. Well done Craig & Staff we WILL be back
29/02/2020: This was our first visit here, having heard nothing but great reviews. From the minute we walked through the door, we could see why. A warm friendly atmosphere from attentive and friendly staff. The choice of drinks was extensive with a little bit of everything, including quality alcohol free beers for the unfortunate driver. From the canapés through to the desserts, everything was top notch. The Taste of Eat on the Green starter was delicious. Our chicken and Beef dishes were cooked to perfection. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted such melt in the mouth Beef before. The head chef Craig, also made the effort to pop out occasionally and talk to and welcome some of the guests which I thought was a very nice touch. A 1st Class dining experience, we will most definitely be back.

Rothesay Rooms

Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside, Aberdeenshire
16/03/2020: We booked in to the Rothesay for a special occasion during our holidays & we were touched by the lengths the Head Chef Ross & the other Staff went to on the night. From the service & atmosphere to the exceptional food & wine we truely had one of the best meals we have ever. Thanks again :-) we will certainly highly recommend to Family & Friends.
07/03/2020: We had dinner here on 6th March and whilst the restaurant was relatively quiet (7 or 8 tables of two) the ambience and front of house service was first class - neither rushed nor intrusive, getting the balance just right. We were served an appetiser of white bait with alioli accompaniment - very tasty. My “pig” filled ravioli starter was perfect, the ravioli was so thin and light, perfect for showcasing the depth of flavour in the meat. My guinea fowl main was an absolute winner too, it was melt in the mouth perfection. My husband had steak tartare followed by the venison and both dishes were outstanding (I sampled both!) We didn’t think we’d room for desserts but given the quality and delicious-ness of our previous courses, we had a wee break before I ordered poached pear, with white chocolate ice cream and a nut brittle, whilst my husband had cranachan with panacotta. What can I say? Both desserts were deliciously yummy and light, so a piece of advice, don’t pass on the desserts thinking you’re too full up, you’ll miss the perfect end to a perfect meal.

The Creel Inn

Stonehaven and Lower Deeside, Aberdeenshire, 20-30£
06/05/2020: We took a drive down the northeast coastal road on a wonderful sunny day. We stopped at the Creel Inn for lunch and were glad that we did. We wanted only a light lunch and so chose a soup and dessert. Both were very good. Service was excellent.
15/03/2020: We went with the 6 of us to The Creel Inn for Sunday lunch, having not been for a while. We were not disappointed. Location in Catterline remains nice, service and atmosphere were good and the meal was great. 6 nice starters, mains and desserts. Weakest was probably the lamb mains (more like mutton), the rest was great.

The Alford Bistro

Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford, Aberdeenshire
18/03/2020: With all the coughing and apparently the cooks are ill there and after I ate there, I am not well now. I WOULDNT EAT THERE JUST NOW....even though the steak is to die for👍
19/01/2020: This unnassuming Bistro with friendly service never disappoints. Last night’s chef pate on homemade oat cakes with apricot on the side was eye-rollngly good- followed by a smoked fish risotto -the creamy texture topped off by a perfectly poached orange-yoked egg. I won’t forget this birthday because of the amazing meal I had at Alford Bistro. Thank you for your unfailingly high stanards.

The Bothy

Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside, Aberdeenshire
16/03/2020: Solid homey food with good coffee to match! Very much enjoyed our breakfasts we had here when staying the area. The dining room also has a lovely view over the river - and we even spotted a red squirrel while there!
10/03/2020: We both had soup and toasties. Nothing wrong at all except the soup didn’t have much flavour, but otherwise great. What’s not to like.

The Lochnagar Indian Brasserie

Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside, Aberdeenshire, 20-30£
24/02/2020: Have just attempted to eat this food. Absolutely disgusting. Over cooked meat supposedly lamb!!. Soggy naan and paratha. Disgusting. We are in Ballater for a week. Most certainly would not reccomend.
23/02/2020: My husband and I had a meal here and were very pleasantly surprised by the high standard of the food - everything was cooked to perfection. We had 2 of the specialty main courses, Goan Lamb Shank and Goan Seafood Cocktail. The flavours were lovely. There was also a very warm welcome and high standard of service. If we could stay an extra day in Ballater we would return to this restaurant.

Balmakewan Farm Shop

Mearns, Aberdeenshire, >100£
01/03/2020: This is about the 4th time we have visited this lovely place. Had breakfast every time and it was absolutely delicious. Staff are lovely and food great. Highly recommended.
21/02/2020: I've had afternoon tea here a few times and the food and the service never disappoint, today was no different, everything was perfect. You have to book few days in advance, but if you look at my photos you can see why. Everything is made to perfection, little mini versions of all the best treats. There's always a warm welcome, I love the atmosphere in here, it's really relaxed and I always feel welcome to sit for as long as we want to. We started with mini cups of richly flavoured soup, and mini black pudding balls, delicious with a nice crispy coating. The savoury plate had a generous variety of sausage rolls, scotch eggs, tiny oatcakes with hot smoked salmon and open sandwiches. Everything was super fresh, perfectly made and presented and packed with flavour. The best part has to be their cake stand. Mini fruit scones, freshly baked with butter and jam, tiny empire biscuits, cream profiteroles with a rich chocolate topping, marshmallow and meringue toad stools, tiny banoffee tarts, I can't even list everything. Beautifully presented and perfectly made, what a treat. Everything is of course served with plenty of really good tea or coffee. It's a real treat to go here, its perfect for a special occasion, or as we did just for a nice relaxing catch up with a friend. The staff leave you in peace, but are always around when you need them. Five star doesn't seem high enough.
