The Beer Engine

Newbrooke, Mid Devon
10/03/2020: Excellent place to eat, beer great, service good. We have visited a couple of times You can not fault the food.
01/03/2020: Have been several times and have always had a lovely meal. We usually visit during the week and find the food and service absolutely brilliant. We decided to try the Sunday lunch menu as we had family down so booked a table for 6 and we were not disappointed. The Sunday lunch menu has the usual starters so very happy as these are always perfectly cooked with a good choice and variety. The mains are limited to roast dinners, a fish option and a vegetarian option - well it is Sunday lunch after all - what else would you expect! If you want more choice then go for a different day as the menu at other times is well balanced and lots of choice. The service was seamless and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The staff friendly and cheerful despite this being towards the end of the lunchtime so they must have been getting tired! The price per head was perfectly reasonable for this standard and quantity of food. A proper, unpretentious dining experience with excellent food and service - thank you - will continue to visit and recommend

The Stag Inn

Westexe, Mid Devon
15/05/2020: Ok. So we have lockdown and social distancing but hats off to Steve and Oliver for offering take away food and refreshments in this time of need. But shhhh don’t tell everyone because they might run out. The pizza we had tonight was probably the best pizza I have tasted, apart from the one I had in Como once. But it was fantastic.
16/02/2020: Really helpful staff and really enjoyed the local produce in a traditional atmospheric traditional environment.

The Ashill Inn

Cullompton South, Mid Devon
14/03/2020: Visited on a Sunday. They managed to squeeze us in despite not booking. Ordered the tuna steak special. It was faultless food and fabulous service. Everything was so flavourful and obviously cooked with attention to detail. I'm a chef myself and this is the best meal I've had out in ages. I would absolutely return to eat this dish again and try other things on the menu. The roasts also looked fabulous coming out of the kitchen. I followed my main with the chocolate brownie which was also divine. The young lads serving had excellent manners and were attentive. The Ashill Inn has got it spot on. I'm making plans to return in the summer to enjoy the lovely beer garden. My highest compliments to the chef!
29/02/2020: Had an amazing evening meal. Had pork shoulder, which was absolutely divine. Partner had scampi & chips, which was amazing. Only downside was I was too full for pudding will most definitely be back! Lovely friendly, happy staff.

Canal Tea Rooms and Gardens

Castle, Mid Devon
01/10/2019: This was our first but not our last visit to these delightful Tea Rooms. We went as a family party with a disabled wheelchair user. Nothing was too much trouble although it was a nice day and they were extremely busy. Tea and scones were equally enjoyed and we will be back.
28/09/2019: What a great little find! A quirky Tea Room predominantly outdoors. We sat in the sun and had a lovely Devonshire cream tea. What more could you ask for? This place is a hidden gem. Can't wait to see you again!

Cadeleigh Arms

Cadbury, Mid Devon
31/05/2020: My husband and I booked our time slot, for a Sunday roast take away, during the corona virus outbreak. Although the pub is not open, they are offering a freshly cooked, using local ingredients roast on a Sunday. It didn't disappoint....it was absolutely lovely, and I wasn't left hungry. The Cadeleigh Arms comes highly recommended by us, and I will not hesitate in ordering another take away roast soon :)
23/05/2020: Nick and Tina have recently started doing a great takeaway menu on Friday and takeaway roast on Sunday. Well organised time slots to keep collections staggered and advance payment make the whole process smooth and swift. We have had a couple of roast dinners and a Friday night takeaway. All have been absolutely amazing and I definitely highly recommend for those who have not yet tried. All menus are posted on their Facebook page well in advance. Looking forward to being able to return for an eat in meal very soon but for now the takeaways are just perfect.

Black Dog Inn

Sandford and Creedy, Mid Devon
01/01/2020: We were staying nearby over christmas. We booked dinner on the first night of opening after christmas and are so glad that we did. It's a friendly tradtional pub, big open fire and very welcoming couple that own it. We were surprised at the menu- really big range, all available, and even another large and comprehensive veggie menu. Food and wine were excellent, with generous portions. Also very good value- really glad that we came and would recommend without hesitation.
12/12/2019: Had a really lovely evening in the Black Dog Inn. We live in a next door village and this was the first time we had tried the Black Dog Inn. It was cosy, friendly, welcoming, great value and the food was delicious. We will definitely be back and would absolutely encourage others to visit. Thank you for a lovely meal.

The London Inn

Sandford and Creedy, Mid Devon
15/12/2019: Eat here quite often, food always amazing and good proportions! Good choice of menu and drinks. Sweets are amazing with good selection
29/10/2019: And a good job we booked. Very nice pub, excellent pint and giant plate of proper home cooked food. Top job. Love Devon; there are many locals of comparable quality doing proper home cooking for sensible money. Thinks perhaps we’ll retire here. The London Inn is certainly one of the better ones, and certainly the only one with Vera. Try it and see! Recommended.

The George Inn

Lower Culm, Mid Devon, >100£
18/10/2019: Wonderful little pub in the village. Very friendly staff and accommodating to our large family group. Super friendly to the dogs too, not surprising their own dog was so well behaved. The food and service was excellent. Well done team George!
09/10/2019: My partner and I were self catering in uffculme and wanted a meal on the sunday. Im not that keen on roasts but the one we had was delicious and I ate every morsel. The landlady Andrea and her husband were so charming and the dog nikita I fell in love with. If we ever go up that way again we would definitely drop in there. We had another meal there the night before we came home to Cornwall.

The Ring of Bells

Way, Mid Devon
28/02/2020: For transparency this is my local pub. However. I eat here maybe twice a month, so I think that qualifies me to review! I rarely eat the same thing as the menu constantly evolves with seasonal availability and because they are very creative with flavours and dishes. Apart from their roast which is reliably knockout. Their Auberge evening which is a set menu 3 course job on a Tuesday is testament to this. If you go and eat fish and chips, steak or roast you won’t be disappointed. The pub classics are catered exceptionally well. But you’d be missing a trick. My last meal here was a week ago which was Tumeric, coconut and butter roasted aloo gobi with cauliflower purée and coriander chutney. So so good!! The food isn’t always fancy, dainty and instagrammable (is that a word?)But this is a pub with exceptional flair, it’s always original and delicious and served by knowledgeable, efficient and friendly folk. They’re also very good at catering to any special request. Don’t see anything you think you’d like, tell them. Want your gravy on the side, ask them. Unassuming yet classy they’ve never let me down.
23/02/2020: Last Autumn we had the best roast dinner ever here, so returned today. Very disappointed to be served burnt Yorkshire puds and everything swimming in a sea of gravy that we pointed out should be served separately. Hopefully this is just a blip.

The Swan

Clare and Shuttern, Mid Devon
16/03/2020: Went for lunch with friends for my husbands birthday. What a delight. A spacious pub, the staff were friendly and pleasant. The food was simply delicious . All five of us enjoyed everything we had. We are a discerning bunch 2 of us very good cooks and 1 a chef, so high praise indeed! The wine was very good too. I had bitter and there was a good choice of beers on tap. Locals drinking at the bar which made for a convivial atmosphere. Hope to come back soon.
02/02/2020: Best mix of menu, quality and hospitality we’ve seen for a long time. Instantly made to feel welcome by Paul (landlord) and his team. Food was out of this world. Just looking forward to a return visit
