We went here one Tuesday lunch time me my husband daughter and two grandchildren. We arrived and were shown into a conservatory part very nice. We were served with our drinks very quickly and were given the menus. The lady came and took.our order and a little while later the food arrived. Our meals were excellent couldn't fault them at all. All in all a lovely place and great staff. Will definitely return. Anne walker

Casual pub atmosphere, lots of young people. Wait staff v nice, food great value. Mexican food, not a huge menu, vegetarian tacos especially taste. They have a Kamado Joe BBQ going so everything had lots of flavour.

Not from the area but gutted to hear it's gone. I was talking to the owner when I was there and he was telling me he was struggling, and the increased utility bills were the final straw. An absolute travesty that places like this suffer because of corporate greed of utilities still making obscene profits whilst community assets like this are 'bent over' to fund their shareholders lifestyles. An absolute 'kin disgrace!!!

Great typically English pub in the middle of pretty countryside. The carvery had been recommended to us and did not disappoint. A choice of 4 meats with fresh veg, roasties, yorkshires, gravy and all the sauces to go with the meat. We went back later in the week and my husband had the best tomato soup ever! Portions are generous so we didn't manage to try the dessert menu. Definitely worth a visit!

After a ridiculously long walk following the two moors way, we were delighted to find ourselves booked into to this lovely place. Landlord and landlady were so friendly and made sure we were properly equipped for the scorching heat the following day. Bedroom was fabulous. Super clean. Huge bed, fresh milk and proper coffee. Food was homemade, fresh and delicious Can’t recommend this place highly enough.

From beginning to end it was a delight to stay at The Black Dog Inn. The hosts were welcoming. The room had views to die for, they were clean and warm. Bathroom was spacious and unlike many of the places we have stayed in the shower was generous. The food was well cooked and my Duck with Pineapple & Ginger sauce was a revelation the portions that would defeat most guests including us so much so that we had to have a very small breakfast.

We saw this pub on trip advisor and decided to visit for our daughters birthday . We were on holiday nearby . It was so brilliant we went back again last night . The landlord was very welcoming and the food - cooked by his wife - was delicious on both occasions . We had the mushroom starter - the prawns and main courses of Thai prawn curry - the beef and fish and chips and macaroni cheese - all super . Lovely salad garnishes too . Scrummy puds to boot. Highly recommended .

We were staying nearby over christmas. We booked dinner on the first night of opening after christmas and are so glad that we did. It's a friendly tradtional pub, big open fire and very welcoming couple that own it. We were surprised at the menu- really big range, all available, and even another large and comprehensive veggie menu. Food and wine were excellent, with generous portions. Also very good value- really glad that we came and would recommend without hesitation.

I cannot fault this place or the people that run it. Lovely food, great atmosphere, good ale and the husband and wife team there are brilliant. I wandered down from the place I was staying nearby, to be truthful not expecting much. How wrong I was! There was even a cracking soundtrack on the jukebox laid on for me! How did they know my musical taste? I was so impressed, the next day I dragged my brother and his wife out from Cheriton Fitzpaine on the day they moved into their new home from London. Initially the wanted to stay in that village to eat, but I drove them out to Black Dog. They too were amazed by the quality of the food and the care the owners took to accommodate my sister-in-law's dietary needs. They could not have been more helpful - even producing a hand-written list of the available choices that were gluten-free. The 5 star reviews for the Black Dog Inn are thoroughly deserved.

We’ve had a super week in Devon and eaten out in some absolutely cracking pubs; love the review culture! By a narrow margin (gosh, everywhere’s so good here!) I think the BDI takes the title for best meal of the week. Lovely friendly pub, welcoming fire in the grate, very nice pint. The food here is a real touch of class, excellent quality and lovely flavours that just elevate it above much of the ‘traditional home cooked’ (but nevertheless very good) competition. It’s the sort of quality you might reasonably expect to come at a premium, but no - standard ‘Devon’ pub prices. Exceptional. Recommended.

Stayed over with my sister-in-law from Australia for 3 nights whilst visiting relatives nearby. Perfect location for this, very quiet and a real break from the city hum drum. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a fantastic modern bathroom & large shower. Breakfast was a banquet of everything you might expect from a full English breakfast to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. The little extras such as croissants and endless toast with tea and coffee were standard. Breakfast set us up for the whole day! Great hosts; large, very comfortable room, especially the bed, with tea, coffee, hot choc, cakes, biscuits & bottled water; spacious bathroom with an excellent walk in shower (no bath); best breakfast I can remember having (fresh berries/fruit; half grapefruit; yogurts; nut mix; dried fruits; cereals; pastries; extensive choice of cooked & continental: my wife's poached egg on toast had 3 eggs); good choices and well cooked evening meal and beers. David and Alli went the extra mile, eg with complimentary bread, olives and balsamic oil before dinner, and we got to choose breakfast time. Stayed here last weekend after dropping our daughter off in Exeter to start her last year at uni. It was also our wedding anniversary so we were looking for somewhere special. This was certainly it, from the minute we walked through the door into the great country pub bar we were met by Dave the landlord who could not have been more accomodating. Nothing was too much trouble ( he even offered to get us a bottle of Prosceco from the nearest Tescos as his daughter was there shopping at the time ). The room was large, very clean with everything you could possibly need, large bathroom with great shower, all toiletries and towels provided. Tea and coffee tray had everything you required, including fresh milk. Booked a table in the restaurant for our evening meal and the food was delicious and plenty of choice. Great nights sleep in a large very comfortable bed. We could not believe breakfast the next morning, everything from fresh fruit to an absolutely fabulous full English. I cannot say enough good things about Dave Alli and the Black Dog but the only way is to experience it is to try it yourself

Starters, mains and uf you have room..pudding ! something that us with coeliac disease seem to lack when it comes to eating out. The landlady/cook and the landlord are very knowledgeable regarding coeliac disease due to their daughter being diagnosed which really put me at ease as they are fully aware of cross contamination. They even advised me that their themed nights are available gluten free also.

Waited an hour before any food appeared, then it was just dried up bread and dash of balsamic diluted with malt vinegar. Meals arrived half an hour after that, Beer battered. cod was hard and dry, as if reheated, with very little cod? Cheeseburger was an untoasted bun, straight from the packet, a luke warm packet burger, with a little grated cheese, nothing else, no relish, pickles, lettuce. tomato or anything else in the bun. Game stew arrived with boiled potatoes instead of the advertised dumplings.

We visited the Black Dog two night in a row (trust me its that good) we were looking for food that was well cooked, and had more than a slice of carrot sitting by a hunk of meat, we were not disappointed. In a warm and friendly setting with clean tables and a friendly smile we were offered decent food at a very decent price. The Lamb Rump and Shanks came with a bowl of varied vegetables, all beautifully cooked as was the meat, The mash potato it was sat on was to die for and so was the gravy. We eat what can only be described as traditional British food both days but other options were available, and by the sounds coming from the table in the next room they were as lovely as ours. We went for the pre-plated option and it was just the right amount. Choice of 4 meats. Everything was done lovely, we really enjoyed it! Puddings sounded good but we couldn't fit one in! We had been promised dinner at our relations house so in the meantime we were allowed to "watch and sniff" the delicious meal offered by the carvery on a Sunday.which was tucked into by Hayley and Darren. Armed only with our drinks we ventured into the serving area to be amazed with the huge choices of four meats, vegetables and proper gravy. We enviously looked on as they tucked into plates piled high with a vast array of different meats and veg. There is no limit on how many returns to the carvery you wish but believe me one plate is more than enough for even the hugest appetite. Unfortunately our holiday was not long enough to be able to return for the carvery but we did return for a celebratory dinner on Tuesday evening with 11 of our family. This also was a huge success. I would recommend the Black Dog Inn especially the Sunday carvery but advance booking is essential such is its popularity.

As a birthday treat we decided to go to one of the theme nights that Dave and Alli at Black Dog Inn put on every month and for September it was Indian night. What a treat, it was a buffet style with choices of rice - plain or Pilau, Spice Potato, or "Indian" chips and then starters of bhaji, pakora etc. Main courses were Beef Madras, Chicken Korma, lamb curry, fish curry, vegetable curry, chicken pakora. We come from Birmingham so know what a good Indian meal should taste like and this hit the spot on all counts. I can really recommend this if you are looking for something a bit different, we loved it and especially as a treat.

my partner and i popped in here for tea as we were staying nearby. when we stepped in, the first thing we noticed is all the china teacups hanging from the roof which looked really cute. we were greeted by the owner who was friendly and when we asked for a drink we were told we didnt have to pay straight away. we were given a menu and we decided to sit away from the main bar area and in the dining room instead. the menu was reasonably priced and the specials looked great. once we had chosen our food, the thing i next noticed was the amount of flies buzzing around us. im sure this couldnt be helped but it was a little frustrating having to bat them away every few seconds. the food came really quickly and everything looked well presented and tasted great, very filling. we were offered more drinks which we gladly took as the cider i was served was delicious! when we had finished food, we paid and sat in the bar area to finish our drinks. i noticed there was no flies round this area so i wished we had sat there and eaten....we did also spot the numerous orchids on the window sills which looked beautiful!

We took friends to the Black Dog this week and they loved it. We had been for a carvery before but this was the first time in the evening. Couldn't fault a thing. Cosy and friendly and amazing food. The meat melts in the mouth and is served with lovely fresh vegetables and a choice of potatoes. The starters and puddings are mouthwatering too. Wonderful experience and our friends said they will be going back there definitely.

We decided to visit after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. Really enjoyed the carvery. Much better than your average sunday lunch. Friendly service, made to feel welcome and felt comfortable, lovely country pub. More character than your modern chain pub. Choice of beef, pork, turkey & gammon today. Can have a bit of each and then still return for more. The food tasted wonderful. I second the previous review about the stuffing, lovely. Can't believe its taken us so long to visit as only a 15mins drive away. Will be back in a couple weeks for more.

So where do I begin, A friend of mine told me about this place and how impressed they was with the value for money and portion size on the food they revived. (2 for 1 main course) so I took it upon myself and dragged the family out for Sunday dinner. I phoned the pub and booked a table for 3 for the Sunday carvery, When arriving in this beautiful rural area, the pub presents itself stunning with lovely thatched roof and ample parking. when entering the black dog we walked to the bar area, and spoke to owner called Dave. he was very friendly and showed us to our table. The table was presented lovely with folded napkins and nice table covers, clean glasses and clean cutlery. there was many drink choices from real ales, to cider, wine's and soft drinks, I sadly as dedicated driver couldn't try them all but next time my wife will be driving and it wont be an early night.we made our way to the carvery buffet area and was greeted by a lovely friendly lady who was carving the meat, and well there was so much choice of meat and fresh veg I could of had a piece of everything, and I did as I helped my son finish his plate, after all don't all dads do that. there was a table to the left that had lots of condiments and could help yourself. The meal itself was lovely the meats and veg was cooked to perfection I simply cant express enough how much I enjoyed it, Alli you and an amazing chef. After finishing our mountain carvery's the friendly waitress took our plates away. we then somehow squeezed a desert in. me and the wife had warm chocolate fudge cake and my son had ice cream. Men I recommend this your wife/partner/son or daughter wont eat it all and you'll get seconds.:) My wife noticed all the orchids plants dotted around the pub, now my house is full of them but I think she needs some tips as there not as nice as yours. so will we be returning YES. why because we felt very welcomed and family friendly. we didn't feel rushed and our boy is the worlds slowest eater, The food was lovely 10/10 All staff was friendly and would go out there way to help. so thank you and keep up the good work.

My wife and I booked a room here via the Late Rooms web site and enjoyed a truly delightful 'week away' using The Black Dog Inn in the village of the same name as our base for each of our days out to local coastal and riverside attractions. The breakfasts were fulsome and very tasty and we tried everything on the menu from 'smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on toast' to 'The Full English Breakfast' during our week. Having enjoyed an excellent evening meal served at 8:30 pm just 30 minutes after our arrival on Monday 18 August we went on to enjoy another 3 excellent evening meals at the Inn and only had one evening meal elsewhere, mid week when we were still a long way away at dinner time. Everything was delightful and Dave and Allison made us feel very welcome. The locals were all friendly too and we enjoyed some very good and entertaining 'bar-side' conversations during our vacation. Needless to say our en-suite room was also very comfortable, with free Wi-Fi too, and we slept well and soundly every night in the comfortable bed after each of our days out either walking or touring around in the car. Thank you Dave and Allison, oh and Mum too - with all your lovely orchids - in every window - you are all stars.

Black Dog Crediton Review......Once 'Bitten' Twice ShyMy wife and I stayed at The Black Dog near Crediton in Devon for 1 night booked through Late Rooms at a cost of £90. We booked the room based on reviews of previous guests giving 100% in their assessments, well……it was an experience we will not repeat!First impressions, we arrived late afternoon and enter what I can only be described as a junk yard to the right of the pub and spoke to a lady who was outside and were told we could park in a field at the rear of the pub. As we approached the main door it opened and were welcomed by Dave, the landlord. The pub door and lobby entrance was shabby and in need of more than a splash of TLC, I read somewhere the pub was refurbished in 2013, I wonder what it was like before! A door to the left leads to the lounge bar/restaurant, what was a door to the right is now boarded up and their are old coats hung up in the entrance lobby. A third door leads upstairs to what I assumed was the living area and our en-suite accommodation for the night, the smell in the lobby was overpoweringly strong, my wife thought it was a cabbage like smell but my guess was air freshener and to my senses most unpleasant, each time we past through this area I had to hold my breathe!Dave showed us to our room for the night, there is only one room which is as the carefully taken photographs show but once in the room the naked eye revealed to us a different picture from the ‘self assessed 4 star’ accommodation advertised. In the bedroom nothing matched there was an eclectic mix of things from pine to Japanese. Ill fitting pine skirting and door architrave, a pine curtain pelmet, nail holes filled and still awaiting a final sanding off! No wardrobe merely an alcove to the left of the window with a rail and coat hangers. The bedding wasn’t as crisp and fresh looking as would be expected but on the plus side a nice television. The en-suite was large with a spacious modern shower but the pipework had been boxed in and left neither tiled nor painted, the tiling was overpowering, walls and flooring the same throughout. My guess is the room and en-suite was a DIY job with work still unfinished. Despite the raving food reviews we declined the invitation by Dave to join them for dinner but Dave was there in the morning to serve an average full English breakfast. The sun was shining through the windows in the bar come dining area and a collection of orchids did cheer the place up just a little but we were glad to get on the road having felt conned out of £90. A week later on our way home to Yorkshire we stayed at Old Parsonage House, Beckington, Nr Bath the accommodation there cost £95 per night I have given my review of that on this site there was no comparison as other guests verify!

We visit here on a regular basis and, even at the risk of it getting busy, I felt I have to share this gem.A real, thatched Devon Pub, interior as it has been for some years but also clean and shining, a real fire in the cooler nights and a choice of eating areas. Beer is always kept well and drinks are at reasonable prices and a wine list chosen for its taste and variety. And add to this a warm welcome and friendly staff and what more could you want?Food here is outstanding, we have had a number of meals here and not one has been anything other than spot on. Where shall I start? Sunday Carvery is a real carvery, not pre-sliced cheap meat but real joints carved in front of you and to your requirements, heaps of different veg to help yourself to, and big plates to put it all on. Never had anything that needed chewing, all tender and very tasty and cooked to perfection. And the normal menu? Don't eat here if you are wanting the run of the mill from a chain establishment. This is real food, cooked by real people who wouldn't put something in front of you that they would not eat themselves. Portions are big, vegetables are fresh and local, and the other half says the hand cut chips are the best in Devon and I cannot disagree. Try anything on the menu and you will not be disappointed. And finally, if you are fortunate to manage to book one of the "Theme Nights" you will be in for a treat. Don't expect imitation versions of the food from the locality for the theme, but expect some of the best quality. The landlady is the chef and how she manages to turn her hand to produce such quality is beyond me. As an example, I am from the Midlands so know what is a good curry and what is a bad one, and on the curry night here there was variety from India, Pakistan and Thailand and each had its distinct flavour and presentation. Highly recommended.Sorry if this sounds like a Sunday magazine write up but it really is that good here.

We were walking the Two Moors way and took the short detour to this pub in the strangely named village of Black Dog (same name as the pub!). The pub was empty at 12.30 when we arrived but the landlord was friendly and welcoming and his cheerful wife made us two rounds of delicious sandwiches. The first pints pulled tasted a little 'off' and the landlord was happy to replace them with no quibbles. This place deserves to be better supported and we wish the owners well. We will cetainly call in again.

Beautiful cafe and modern menu. I plumped for the Rarebit with poached egg with a pot of home made baked beans and a hot choc. Delicious! They make their own produce and the most crusty Sour dough bread. The outside of the building undervalues what’s inside. Well worth a visit. You won’t be disappointed.
