The Bakehouse in Mid Devon

I have eaten here several times and it has been okay but I have to say that a couple of days ago my friend and I had the same choice on the specials menu and it was dreadful. Three skewers of halloumi, tomatoes and aubergine on two pieces of ciabatta, covered with rocket. The aubergine was practically raw and inedible, and the bread had nothing on it, no olive oil or tomato pesto. There was little of it and hugely expensive at more than £13, with no price upon the board. I thought it was disgraceful and they are taking advantage of having always been popular.

Excellent breakfast, highly recommended. Staff very welcoming. Glad I booked a table as visited today and it was busy which is nice to see.

Cheese board is usually good, blue and brie were brilliant, cheddar too mild for my taste. 30.1.24 - had a breakfast with my better half. She enjoyed her poached eggs, I went for the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, lovely, swift service, friendly helpful staff. Nice and warm on a cold day next to the log burner . Still the go to place in cullompton for food. 19.9.24 - dropped in for a piece of cake and coffees , espresso decaf was great and had an ordinary Americano , tasted great. My dad went for the hot chocolate which got his recommendation . Great place , good value but not the cheapest. Still awesome.

My first visit to The Bakehouse. It was a breakfast work meeting but very comfortable and easy atmosphere. We had 3x breakfasts between us, from the special - Eggs Benedict, Bubble & Squeak and Creamy Mushrooms and poached eggs (which I had). Around £10.75 for each + coffees. Very good.

Just stopped over here on our way home from Cornwall. Lovely food and really lovely service for us and the dog! The server made sure the dog had treats and water. Managed to fit us in too on a bank holiday Saturday evening.. definitely would come again if we are ever in the area.

I loved the atmosphere and the employees were very kind to us. My sister and I ordered the seafood platter without anchovies, and my mother, my sister, and I all had frappes. The frappes aren't like the ones I've had before, they have a more defined coffee taste that most lack. I forgot what my mother had. It was a sandwich that contained salmon and something else. The food that we ordered was also very high quality. I personally loved the mackerel and prawns Edit: my sister also made a review that's why 2 reviews have the same photo

Really good came here cus we didn't go exiter one of the best places I've been went with my baby sister my mum and brother such good food we were in the dining room thing it was not noise like other places me and my brother shared the seafood plater it was worth every penny the waitress was very sweet they had a great attitude and was very lovely great food great seats etc 10/10☺ please get it to say it's a 5star place bc it is! (My brother also made a review on it)

Nice place, all the teas you’d want. A good coffee too. Good airy areas of seating. Lovely gluten free scone with a redbush tea; made my day.

Fantastic food. I had ham, egg and chips in which came a delicious side salad. The eggs and ham were locally sourced. The ham, in particular, was spectacular.

Excellent breakfast. Good selection for all tastes. Had the bubble and squeak with poached eggs yummy. Husband had standard breakfast. Also yummy. Great thick sliced toast. Will definitely return. Been several times in the past for lunch. Never been disappointed. Try it.

I recently visited The Bakehouse in Cullompton for breakfast and I really enjoyed our visit. We will be back to try the evening menu! The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, adding to the lovely atmosphere of the café. We felt very welcome. It was exceptional service by the entire team - thank you. The food is absolutely delicious and so are the summer drinks & iced latte. The iced latte is served with vanilla syrup & whipped cream and I was a very impressed - my favourite iced latte! We didn't try the cakes but there was so many delicious-looking choices. Delicious food, lovely service, a bit of a gem considering we were looking for somewhere to charge the car and the service station was jammed so we opted for a charger in the village. Thank goodness we did. I wasn’t that hungry so had a small plate of smoked salmon pâté, my husband had a meze platter, they were delicious, all home made and displayed beautifully.

Brief visit near the end of a day exploring Devon. We ordered two ‘Bakehouse Toasties’, the cheddar and mozzarella and the bacon, brie and cranberry sauce, both with salad. All was excellent and the first toasty so large that my wife took half away to eat later. Thank goodness we refused the offer of a side of chips! Mine was washed down with a latte tasting of coffee and was not 1/4 foam: a delight. Great ambiance despite being close to closing. Recommended to all

Nice food nothing special about it

Lovely place to go for coffee or a meal.

We hadden voor de kinderen een kinder ontbijt met een gebakken ei, gepocheerd ei en een worstje. Met zichtbaar genot aten ze het op. De appelsap was gemaakt in de buurt. Mijn vrouw had 'The Beast' met alles wat je mag verwachten van een Engels ontbijt. Zelf had ik een High Tea met sandwiches met zalm en een creme kaas, een overheerlijke scone en een erg lekkere brownie die door de kinderen werd opgegeten.

We had the all day breakfast, with swaps for me from black pudding to tomatoes and from chips to hash browns. Excellent bacon and sausage, perfect eggs, very filling. Lovely apple juice and coffee alongside.

What a lovely warming place this is. Staff friendly and helpful nothing is to much trouble. The place is so lovely with old and interesting pictures but with a cosy friendly atmosphere. Food looks smells fantastic and the taste is out of this world with the locally sourced ingredients is a fantastic touch. Definitely be returning to this little gem

Amazing food, service and atmosphere! Great selection of coffee, cakes, and meal options for all tastebuds and dietary requirements! Still pop your head in to see if there are tables available, even if it looks full, as there is a large dining area out of view from the high street with lots more tables!

What a lovely place this is! Called in for a spot of lunch. Welcoming and friendly, with one of those menus that are difficult to choose from - in a good way. Everything sounded wonderful, and sure enough the open sandwich proved to be every bit as tasty as it sounded. Quality ingredients (good bread makes such a difference to a sandwich) put together by people who clearly know what they're doing. Country portions too - you won't go hungry. Overall, food and service to make your day a better one. Highly recommended.

The people here are so lovely and the food is proper farmhouse special stuff. I would love to know where they get everything from! It's much bigger than expected too as it extends to the back, perfect for families and doggos

We always pop in here for lunch on our way to Forest Glade Holiday Park. Fantastic portion sizes, very cosy and welcoming. Dog friendly. Love it x

Nice cosy atmosphere with friendly family staff, standard menu has nice options and there are always nice specials to choose from (the smoked salmon sandwich bangs). Enjoy when they open for evenings too.

Visited The Bakehouse in January 2024 with my friend and was delighted by the g/f options. I had the 'bubble and squeak' with poached eggs which was the best lunch out I've had in a very long time. Absolutely scrumptious.

Absolutely delicious squash soup, incredible houmous, perfect chunky chips. Very friendly and cosy with a great atmosphere. There is a 'sharing table', and a real neighbourhood feeling.

We stopped in Cullompton on our way elsewhere so that we could have a leg stretch after a long journey. After a walk around the town we saw The Bakehouse and being dog friendly decided to pop in. Friendly service and great atmosphere we decided to have something to eat as well as a drink. An americano and a luxury hot chocolate, with the hot chocolate actually being hot unlike so many places where it is lukewarm and you end up finishing it two minutes later. This was creamy and a good helping of marshmallows! We then ordered a bakehouse toastie consisting of cheddar and mozzarella with hogs bottom tomato and red onion chutney. It was like a meal in itself and a very impressive and fresh side salad. We also ordered the crispy fried halloumi wrap with rocket, peppers, red onion and chilli sauce. Again, a large serving with great side salad. Both meals freshly made and piping hot, so chance for them to cool down a bit and enjoy the surroundings of the premises. A great place and one we will be sure to visit again next time we pass through. Oh whilst I am a Costa coffee fan, which is just on the opposite side of the road, I implore people to support The Bakehouse team where you get freshly prepared on-site food and drink at prices more competitive than you will get in any major chain coffee house.

Although not busy it took ages for the scones to arrive. I think we were forgotten.

First time visitors. What a chilled, comfortable venue. Its bigger than it looks from the outside with a nice dining room at the rear if you fancy with a lovely looking fire for when it's cold. I had jacket potato with lovely crunchy coleslaw, roasted vegetables and blue cheese. Jackets can sometimes be a bit boring but this was excellently cooked and presented. Washed down with a glass of merlot. Can only thoroughly recommend the whole experience. Sometimes you DO get what you pay for and I felt we definitely got value for money here.

The Bakehouse is a fantastic place to come for a meal or just a bit of tea and cake. The food is so delicious and always prepared and presented beautifully. And of course, the staff are wonderful! I can highly recommend popping in to The Bakehouse!

Went in for lunch with my wife Friendly service, comfortable. I had a smoked salmon, cream cheese and rocket leaf sandwich on local granary bread which came with a good leafy salad. The sandwich was huge and well made. My wife had the quiche of the day, which went down well and she couldn't finish it, which is fine. We thought the tea wasn't strong enough but I guess it's a question of personal taste. I wouldn't say it was cheap: over £25.

A destination eatery on the ways to and from Cornwall. Easy parking in Tesco’s and excellent food and service the third year running for us and better every time.

Met a friend for coffee.... First time here. Lovely little café... Great atmosphere and very welcoming staff. Only had coffee, so I can't comment on the food... although judging by how the food looked that was coming out for other people... I'd definitely come back and eat next time!

Quick pit stop on way home to Liverpool from Cornwall We wanted to stop off for a quick sandwich somewhere not too far off motorway and my god what a sandwich we got! Huuuge door stoppers which we’re absolutely delicious! Home made and tasty! You won’t go wrong here on the way to/from Cornwall!

Lovely food, always served with a smile!

Ordered a Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Toasted Sandwich. On arrival it was clearly undercooked. The cheese was not melted and the bacon was cold and not cooked. Mentioned this to a member of staff who took it away. This was replaced with either the same sandwich or a new sandwich that was cooked and was hot to touch. Don't know how they cook there toasties but it appeared as though all the ingredients had been put into two slices of bread and toasted all together. Not the best and won't be returning.

Lovely accidental find, when making a pit stop in Cullompton. Excellent food (try the halloumi!), friendly service and the back room where we ate was full of character. Reasonable prices. Thoroughly recommended.

We stopped here for a quick takeaway coffee and were really impressed by the cosy decor. The staff were pleasant and there was a good selection of cakes. We’d have stayed for lunch had we had more time.

Found this lovely little coffee shop from the Extra Mile book, 5 minutes off the M5 and free on street parking for an hour, we went for the scones with jam & cream and a cappuccino, definitely worth the drive off the motorway the scones were delicious and the cappuccinos were excellent. All the staff were friendly and welcoming ,the place was clean as were the toilets, will definitely call in again when we find ourselves down that way.

I was given a voucher for an Afternoon Tea here and my husband and I enjoyed every minute of our visit! The staff were so friendly in a relaxed yet efficient way, the food arrived having chosen our sandwiches and cake. I had the ham sandwich and it was delicious as was the cheese and chutney. Scones were excellent and we took the cake home with us and some sandwiches so we can enjoy them later. I would really recommend trying this restaurant. The menu is varied and offers quite a lot of vegetarian options. We will definitely be going back! You made the trip feel special!

Great breakfast! Lovely place as always. Update - unfortunately our lunch visit today was a little disappointing. Lunch choices were a bit more limited than we remember. Had 2 meze platters to share. Fish platter was excellent but falafel was dry and overcooked. They brought 2 more which were better but still not up to expectations. Felt the falafel, humus and olive platter was way less plentiful than the fish. We like the Bakehouse so were disappointed it was not up to normal standard.

We had lunch it was absolutely delicious I had the sea food platter my husband had the chicken burger which was also lush , the staff are so happy in they’re work and are very professional . Shout out to who ever makes those brownies they are amazing thank you

What a brilliant find - we live in Pennymoor towards Witheridge so don't often come to Cullompton, but worth the visit just for this gem. A wonderfully cosy, atmospheric cafe with simple and tasty food, great value, very polite and friendly staff and very dog friendly!!!! Such a perfect mix of spacious yet intimate, with lovely wooden furnishings and a great selection of daily sweet bakes. Will 10/10 be visiting again and couldn't recommend more. Thank you for having us!

Good food, good service. If you're meeting with friends for lunch book a table at the rear because it gets very noisy in the front of the cafe. But, well worth visiting.

Had lunch with the family at the window table last Saturday. The food and the service were both excellent as usual. I can thoroughly recommend the Filo Parcels. And unlike some Cafe Bars, the children’s meal was well prepared and presented too.

Great stop off of the m5 for lunch - don’t go to the service station/ have a proper break and support a sweet local cafe / bar.

Fab full english breakfast enjoyed at the bakehouse. Been a few times now and everything is consistently really tasty, especially the sausages that are a world apart from supermarket ones. Should call it an all day breakfast because it fills me up all day. We'll definitely continue coming back when we deserve a treat.

My husband, my sister & I took our Mum for Luncheon. This was to celebrate our Mum's 81st birthday. Excellent service & food. So much so, I asked for the recipe of the Homemade soup of the day, which my Mum loved. Staff more than happy to assist us in what we needed. I would advise to book a table to avoid disappointment, especially if it is for a special Lunch.

Have been before and generally had good experiences so I went for lunch over the Easter break, had an absolutely awful meal. I couldn’t eat the food. Obviously buying cheap ingredients and charging a premium. Chicken was on wrong side of being cooked, gristly, soggy chips that had been reheated. Put me off going back ever again and I was completely disappointed with what had previously been somewhere we rated. Perhaps trying to make more profits or maybe a change in chef but was truly disgusting.

Must say super service and the best salmon and cream cheese sandwich I have ever ate! Also jiggled around the ingredients for my daughter in law- only likes plain food 😁 Son really enjoyed his home made well sized burger. Can’t wait to return- thank you 😊

Superb place to eat. Great staff who will find you somewhere to sit. The bacon sandwich is perfect. Thick bacon in between two very thick pieces of fresh bread. Try the salad dressing that you can purchase.
