Amazing venue, friendly staff and great selection of drinks, atmosphere is electric something for everyone

Four of us visited The Hen last week and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The pub had been doing Indian food and well as a comprehensive English menu for some time now, and I’ve heard nothing but good reviews, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. The service and welcome from Belal and his team was excellent, and the time taken to care for one of our party who has a garlic allergy was absolutely perfect. We all agreed that the reports of this being the best curry house around were spot on, and we will definitely return.

I recently booked a Sunday lunch for a party of 18 to celebrate my 80th birthday. I booked all the different menu choices in advance. Although most opted for the carvery as their main course, there were a few other choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free, and we selected a wide variety of starters and desserts. Despite our large numbers and the fact that there were many other diners, the food was served quickly and efficiently and there was little queuing at the carvery. The waiting staff were helpful and friendly, and the quality of the food was much praised. Many thanks to Andy, Dionne and their team. Had a lovely evening here with the football team, think there was between 10-14 of us and we were served drinks as soon as we came in. We did pre order our mains and at the last minute a couple of us ordered starters which came out very quickly, this wasn’t an issue for the staff which was amazing. Service was really good for the whole evening and everything was brought I us very quickly. I had the chicken korma and prawn purée and it was lovely, good size portions and everything was hot and seemed fresh. The restaurant was nicely decorated and seemed clean. Maz and the staff were all great and there was always someone around for anyone to order another drink or anything. I have had a few takeaways from here over the years and never had an issue, food has always come quickly and been hot. I think once there was a delay as it was a busy night but we were given some free drinks and sides so we’re very happy. I would recommend this restaurant and will be coming back with my family. This local pub is well used by the locals and visitors alike the food is very good on the both days I eat there. The staff and locals are very pleasant and welcoming and a pleasure to meet

We’ve enjoyed this pub for the last five years or so, and the new owners are friendly and have done a lovely job with the refurbishment. However, we’re really disappointed with the food prices. This is a small village pub, not a gastro pub — yet we were charged £4.95 for the smallest bowl of chips, and £12 for a plate of nachos that didn’t even have any real cheese on them, just squeezy cheese sauce. To put it into perspective: most pubs in the area charge around £3–£4 for a decent portion of chips, and you can usually get fully loaded nachos with actual melted cheese, sour cream, guac and jalapeños for under £10 — even in larger chains. At this price point, you’d expect better quality and portion sizes. The menu now seems to mirror the Tipsy Fox, which has also become overpriced. It’s disheartening to see such steep price increases, especially as we’ve regularly supported your pubs, particularly in the warmer months. We completely understand that costs are rising for businesses, but the current mark-up feels excessive and risks driving loyal customers away.

Delightful pub in the heart of Southwater! Easy to get to and amazing staff. Ansar, the landlord, is very welcoming. Great atmosphere and a large selection of drinks.

Ordered a pizza and sides online, waited an hour for the delivery to arrive. For half an hour it was showing on the app as “quality checking” which tells me it was cooked and sat in the store for half an hour. When it finally arrived; it was cold. Called the store immediately to be told my options were a £10 refund for a meal costing almost £30 or wait another hour for a new one. I spoke to the “manager” who reiterated this. He apparently couldn’t offer a full refund as he had no proof it arrived cold. I asked to speak to somebody further up the food chain than he and he laughed and said the owner doesn’t come in to store and to contact head office. Which I have. Disgusting service, will absolutely not be using again. To top it off I tipped the driver, I’d have been better flushing the cash.
