Hen & Chicken in Horsham

Wow is all I can say! We stopped in here today after visiting the country park. We only really chose here because it was close to the park. We were absolutely blown away by the Indian food, which was the tastiest I’ve ever had and I am quite the connoisseur of Indian food. What a gem! We will definitely be returning. I recommend the dosa. Delicious. Service was marvellous too.

Absolutely gorgeous food. Please visit this place. We had a few different things for 5 people. Everything was delishoues and freshly made.

Great Indian restaurant which is not your archetrypal food fair. They serve the usual curries that everyman and his dog usually have but that also traditional Indian curries. You must try the Chettinad and Rara Ghost. Service is a bit slow sometimes but all in all a good local restaurant.

We ate here on a Saturday lunchtime. The pub was understandably quiet but he service and food was still good. The dosa in particular was spectacularly good. We will certainly return.

A fabulous Indian restaurant because: - The food was excellent, especially the rara lamb dish. - The service was great, with great banter. The 'larger guy', as he called himself, was fabulous, and the younger female waitresses were great too. - The restaurant is lovely. A welcoming open fire on arrival. Well worth a visit.

We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated. Poppadoms and sides arrived and they were fresh, crispy and tasty. There were a number of vegetarian options for me and the waiter described them and helped me to make my choices. My husband is not vegetarian and he too, had help choosing his meal. The empty plates arrived nice and hot and the food followed shortly after. It was delicious, the service was splendid, polite and friendly. My husband earlier had mentioned to the staff that it was my birthday as he ordered me a large glass of wine and they later brought a pudding with a lighted candle and sang Happy Birthday. It was a lovely gesture and most unexpected. This restaurant was recommended to us by a neighbour and we were delighted to have such lovely food and service. Thank you to the team there.

Once again another excellent meal at the Hen and Chicken. This place is by far the best Indian restaurant for miles around. The food is so tasty, the portions decent and has some nice unusual things on the menu too. Try the Dosas, they are massive and delicious! The chicken Shashlick is absolute incredible too, really delicious. It’s my favourite. So succulent and moist! The staff and management are always attentive, friendly and make sure your drinks are topped up. They have got it absolutely spot on. Try it, you won’t be disappointed!

My favourite curry house. As a curry club member we visit many many restaurants throughout Sussex, Surrey and London. Do not be deceived by the modest exterior or pub-like interior. If you are serious about curry you will love this place. Fresh ingredients and an amazing chef combine with charming service to provide an authentic curry experience you’ll be looking to come back to again and again! These people are passionate about their food. Love the Hen and Chicken.

It was ok we had a curry each it tasted like it had been warmed up in a microwave. we were rushed main cause turned up while we were eating out starters

Great selection of English and Indian food at the Hen. Good value for money. Fresh Fish & Chips with peas £13 and great Indian mixed grill for £17. Our party of 10 had a great night with the friendly staff very helpful

Very good food and tasty , dosa was very nice . Been here several times and always walked out feeling very happy with the food . Staff are amazing and very attentive.

Food was awful, small portions and undercooked- complained and the manager was terrible- shouting and aggressive- other diners were shocked by this behaviour. Luckily got full refund from my credit card.

Christmas dinner- Awful! Starter was ok but the main was not a Christmas dinner it was more like a £1.00 microwave meal from Aldi and as for pudding we had a bowl of vanilla ice cream, even though we order mint! The other choices of pudding was a Christmas pudding that looked like it had been sat on or a Baileys (not really a pudding!) Basically we would have had a better meal in Wetherspoon’s at least you get a burger and a pint for £6.50 and a half decent pudding for les than £3.00! Very disappointing as we were really looking forward to this and has made us want to stay at home and cook next year!We left still hungry with empty stomachs but wallets a lot lighter as the meals were over £60 a person 🙈 Shame as for Indian for this pubs great but Christmas dinner is a huge No.

So we went to the Hen & Chicken for a traditional festive turkey roast. We got there and the place was rammed with people leaving and people trying to get in, because there were 2 time slots for dinner. They was trying to rush the earlier slotted people out, as to get the later slots people in, it was mayhem. Once we got our table nobody knew what was going on, then a waiter turned up with our starter, 1 chicken wing, 1 lamb chop in a tandoori sort of marinade, 1 small prawn in breadcrumbs and bit of lettuce and a small mint dip. There was no choice, we just got what we were given and a tiny plastic flute of prosecco. None of us really liked any of this, but ate a bit of it anyway. Then the main course Omg, for a festive turkey roast, we had a slice of turkey, which had been microwaved, 1 roast potato, yes that's right not a plural, just 1 roast potato. With 4 tiny Brussel sprouts, a parsnip that looked like it had been split between the 4 meals as their was 4 of us. A tiny Yorkshire pudding that was from a frozen pack. And a couple of tiny carrots. So if I'm generous, I would have paid about £7 for what looked like child portions. There was no pigs in blankets, no stuffing, no sausage meat, no fresh decent vegetables. There was no green on the plate. The total came to £65 each person. So we went to the bar to speak with the manager, who was very ill tempered, shouting in his own establishment, telling us that out of 250 we were the only people that complained. What we was un aware of, is the fact that, it was now a curry house (obviously being called the Hen & Chicken in a small country pub). Almost everyone else was eating curry and had massive portions. So after creating a big seen, and being very unprofessional, The manager just asked us to pay for our drinks, which we happily paid for. But after ruining our Christmas day meal embarrassing us, over a meal that clearly was not worth £65 and I even begrudge paying the £10 deposit for. The manager was angry that we had lost him money, even though he'd earned in about 6 hours the grand total of £16,250, that's 65 x 250. It was ment to be a special dinner for me, as I would not have been alive this Christmas, if it wasn't for my liver transplant this year. I can safely say we will not be eating at this establishment ever again. 😡😡😡

Everything the last person said happened to us on Christmas day , we got two Brussels, 2 small carrots, one persons carrots were still frozen, no parsnips, one roast potato and one Tesco value frozen Yorkshire, im not even going to mention the meat. We are still on Boxing day waiting for a pudding. It ruined our day, the food was beyond disgusting, the service a disgrace and no apology and too make it worse they over charged us, unbelievable.

I am so deflated from my experience in Xmas day! This pub should not have advertised the turkey roast dinner as an option on Xmas day! It was absolutely shocking. Totally miss advertised. I am never one to usually complain, but I am well within my consumer rights to complain about the low standard of food for a 'Christmas day'. The one time is should have felt special. I wouldn't even be writing this bad review if the man behind the bar didn't react the way he did! Shouting at us so that all the pub could hear! Demanding cash for it all, even though we refused to eat it so of course I'm not going to hand over £65 for a dinner I was dissatisfied with and didn't eat! It was really poor hospitality and the fact that he didn't even give a damn about upsetting me and my family on Christmas day was absolutely disgusting, with no apology and made us look like we were the bad ones for not eating the poor quality of food. Shame on you.

Outstanding food in a nice venue. Convenient location and enough parking on site or nearby. The food was incredible and the staff were quick, polite and super efficient. We visited as a group of 6 and were served really fast but everything was fresh and delicious. Stand-out dish for me is the Gobi Manchurian. So good we had to order a second plate. Everyone on the table loved it!

First time going to this restaurant/pub, on entering we were greeted straight away and shown our table. Our drinks order was prompt and when the drinks came we ordered our food. 3 people ordered curry meals. Tikka Masala & Butter chicken, these were found to be too spicy hot. Jalfrezi was hotter than you would normally have elsewhere. Butter chicken was a huge disappointment for one of our friends. Other friend had halloumi burger. Unfortunately all of us have had an upset stomach today. This may not be the food and a bug but is a coincidence. Most staff were friendly & pleasant.

lovely food. Mixed grill excellent. smell was so good people on another table ordered it.. (despite the smoke alarm being activated!) . Young waiter was excellent and very engaging. When I asked if we got our meal free as smoke alarm went off he instantly replied it would cost more ( we knew he was joking!)

There was a 14yr old who was very rude and discourteous. He refused to help me with ordering and I believe he tampered with my food. He was very unprofessional. 1 star would not recommend

My favourite place to go, the service is always brilliant, nothing is too much for the staff they always go above and beyond. The food is always great, good selection for everyone and you can order pub food and Indian food. There is an option to sit in the garden or inside and no matter where you sit the service is the same. Whether it’s a family meal or a few drinks in the evening everyone is welcome and it is just a relaxed atmosphere. Massive selection of drinks and cocktails. The shows that they put on are just fantastic cannot recommend this place enough.

Took my daughter and wife for a birthday lunch.food excellent,hot,plentiful and well presented.they have an Indian menu and a pub menu so a large choice.I would recommend the dosa which was the second time I have had this dish at this pub. We came here Saturday evening for a family meal. All the staff were very polite and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble: The food was cooked to a high standard and was absolutely delicious. Glad we booked in advance, we wouldn’t have got in otherwise. Would highly recommend this place and would definitely come here again, if we were in the area. In the Southwater area the Hen And Chickens is a traditional British pub serving lovely home made food. Mainly frequented by locals one of whom said it was a hidden secret. We can understand why. The staff were welcoming and prices were very reasonable. Recommended

A group of us went for a lovely lunch at this local pub in Southwater, West Sussex.Our meals ranged from ham, egg and chips, omelette, fish and chips, macaroni and salad and I had sausage, egg and chips. The two sausages I had were huge, extremely tasty and I think obtained from a nearby local butchers.Other specials were visible on the blackboard along with puddings. The staff very very obliging and the food and drinks reasonably priced.

Lovely landlord, lovely pub, but Sunday lunch not great, I suppose that fact that it was pretty empty was a bad sign, maybe 3 other couples.I had phoned and asked about a carvery, the person answering said that it isn't BUT the food is cooked on the premises. It clearly isn't, the beef and lamb ignore cooked and tasteless, typical Brake Bros fayre, and the Yorkshires are bought in.Cheap, edible, but not one I would return to. Sad as the pub and host are spot on.

First visit for me yesterday meeting friends for lunch and a good gossip! Not many traditional old English pubs left sadly but this is one! Dating back to the 1800's it has kept it's old worlde charm and what a delight to have no loud music or a TV blaring away in the corner! Small menu which mine host makes no apologies for as all home cooked.Good recommendation is that locals support the pub for lunch. Friendly staff and good to to meet the owner.

An old pub dating back to 1850, a tradional British pub with the restaurant within the premises. Varied menu, home cooked and excellent and traditonal beer! Fish and chips were superb.

My second visit for lunch with friends. It lived up to the first visit. First class food, welcoming staff and lovely decor. Everything you want. It is a PROPER pub with a great atmosphere. Previously we had the delicious Carvary but this time we chose from the menu. We all decided on burgers, and my beef one was the best I have had in years. The others loved theirs too, including the lamb burger. The puddings are great and once again I had the waffle and ice cream. Yum. It is our restaurant of choice now when we meet. Highly recommend this delightful place, great food, atmosphere and value.

So me and my wife happened upon this little place when we were house viewing. All I can say is nostalgia!!! It's the type of pub that you just revert back to your childhood!! Another return visit, with friends visiting from Spain. Always requesting we visit for a drink or for lunch on their visit. Two small car parks either side of the pub. A must visit for a traditional, no frills, English country pub.

Popped in for lunch and were given a very warm welcome. The food choices were good and varied. There was a 2 meals for £9 variety which we chose and thoroughly enjoyed. Large portions, freshly cooked and swiftly served. Great conversation with the host as well. Certainly will return.

Visitamos el de soltera y pollo a la hora del almuerzo de hoy. No había estado allí durante un par de años, pero había leído buenas críticas en Tripadvisor, así que decidí darle otra oportunidad.

This is not your gastronomic pub or your fine dining pub. This is your local pub which serves local ales and usual beers what more do you want? Great bar staff, friendly locals, family and dog friendly. Had a great night last Friday during one of their events and the time flew by. Will go back and try their food.

We stopped here for lunch last week, it is right on the main road but, has plenty of parking. Once inside you can't even hear the traffic noise. We ate an omelette, Goulash and the Sausage bagette. The Pork Goulash was very filing, tasty with plenty of rice, very peppery. The Sausage bagette used locally sauced sausages which were very nice, lean and tasty. The hand cut chips were lovely and plentiful. Mother had a Cheese and Tomato omelette, again with hand cut chips. The service was personal and quick. The beer and wine was also acceptable. All round good choice for lunch.

Regulars at the Hen, great place went there for dinner couple of Saturdays ago lovely meal Emma really knows her craft, Chris was in great form too, beer good as per our favorite pub in the area, will be back in this weekend.

My husband and I regularly visit the Hen & Chicken for lunch and we've never been disappointed. It's your average pub fayre but it is great value for money. Especially the 2 for £9 menu..... very decent sized meals considering the low price, with great taste and presentation. We've even visited with the dog, and she's welcomed by a water bowl by the bar and complimentary treats on the bar!!!
