Whilst visiting Whitchurch for a SPA weekend break a quick Google search for places to eat brought up the Horse and Jockey. Liking the look of the website, we booked a table on the Friday night for 8pm and although we turned up 30 minutes early, the team managed to get a table ready for the two of us. It was a very busy night, the atmosphere was great, a warm, cosy traditional pub. The service was excellent along with a good menu to choose from, in fact both my wife and I were struggling to pick what to go for. In the end, I had the Ribeye and my wife had the lamb shank. Food was excellent, a taste to die for, we even managed a cheeky pudding each. Highly recommended, only downside (and loss of a ⭐️ ) was the fact VAT was added to our bill which we were not expecting as we were unaware all prices shown on the menu and website, were excluding VAT.

Saturday 8th March 2025 was the third time over the last few weeks I have been to Jones (my wife has been before), and I have to say I haven't been disappointed yet. The ambience and atmosphere is lovely. I have seen some bad reviews about young staff not being interested - we have not experienced this, all of them have been friendly and polite. Also, on this note, this Saturday we sat in the window, and we overheard the owner gently advising one young lady on how to greet customers after a couple walked in. Not angry, she didn't put her down, just some gentle words of encouragement. I think it is great that the owner of this establishment is giving youngsters a chance (as we did when we ran our own 45 seater coffee shop). Anyway! Service has never been slow, the food is delicious ( I am making my way through the hot panini/ciabatta choices), and the latest - Bacon, cheese, celery and Jones own chutney - was divine. The chicken and olive one also deserves a mention. This establisment also makes its own preserves (chilly jam etc, too many to mention, but my onion chutney was delicious) and wine from its own vineyard in north Shropshire. After we had eaten we had a lovely chat with the owner. Also a mention about bad reviews regarding dogs. This place is dog friendly. Don't like dogs? Go somewhere else, get over it. We've eaten in places with crying new born babies. Want to ban them as well? In a nutshell, great ambience, fantastic food served within twenty minutes, it's a 5* from me and my wife, as former coffee shop owners.

After a disappointing visit to a nearby attraction we wanted something to eat and a drink and this pub was nearby. Booked online and when we arrived table was already set, plenty of room on car park and we were seated straight away. Not a huge menu but something for everyone. Carribean chicken is amazing, chips are gorgeous and lasagna was enjoyed more than one eaten in Rome a few weeks ago. Staff were lovely and nice to see the chef pop out and see if everyone enjoyed the food as well. Didn't think it was unreasonably priced for the quality and potion sizes just right. We have been saying ever since how much we enjoyed the food and wished it was closer to home! Only reason for not being 5 stars was the room and the loos could be smarter but would happily drive the almost hours journey on occasion for the amazing food.

the building is gorgeous but unfortunately there is nothing here for vegans. when asking about vegan options, a member of staff from the deli type area went upstairs to the cafe to ask. when they came back, they gave us a menu and said that nobody up there knew. checked the menu and there was nothing on there suitable for vegans. disappointed, we left. it surprises me that in 2025 there are places that still do not cater to vegans when it’s really quite a common lifestyle choice nowadays :(

We have had lunch here many times over the last years and have previously reviewed The BB but feel that it deserves another shout-out. Yesterday, for example, lovely well-cooked food and delivered hot which we do like. A characterful building so plenty to look at and admire. The staff are a delight and you can have a bit of banter with the regulars at the bar if you so wish. Thoroughly recommend. Oh, almost forgot to say that the place is absolutely spotless. Even the plants are dust-free!
