There are lots of pubs to have an evening meal in the Lakes, this one maybe has to make an extra effort because it is so far off the beaten track. It takes modest effort to get there, worth it. We had a lovely meal on a Sunday evening, accompanied by good beer. I hate the expression "Gastropub" but the food here is rather better than routine, not a big menu but big enough. Beer (Jennings) excellent. Really interesting ancient interior to this pub. Support it. You will enjoy it. Staff charming

Well what a gem of a place this turned out to be. Short trip to this amazing area and happened to stay just over the road. The food is amazing....try the pies and the roast if you get a chance. The staff are so laid back...I love it. The night before I was in a busy London pub...horrid with no personal service or personality. This is so quaint it just makes you feel at home.

My daughter went for lunch with her 14 month old baby struggled to get in with buggy no help, i.know its not the best access ,however she went down to cafe sat there, for at least 15 min.no one came to serve her,one customer complained over charged so went to pay and sort it however still no service for my daughter, so she had enough walked out in disgrace ,went to square cafe instead. She wont use this place again, while visiting ,might be short staffed but its still bad service, i.live here so did my daughter till had the baby ,till service is sorted i wont use cafe either, im.doing this review as daughter was furiouse and i wasnt pleased either, so hopefully it can be sorted and not let people in cafe wait for too long or even ignored !

We were staying in a little cottage a mile down the road for a week around Cumbria and this was the closest and ended up being one of the best little bolt holes of bliss in the Duddon Valley. So welcoming, it became a local for my husband and I and if we ever move up there, we’ll be back in being local like a shot. The food was extensive with a separate superb vegetarian and vegan menu. I have been struggling with a mutated smell and taste for two years and they were so accommodating when I asked for 3 chips with my curry, and 3 was what I had on the plate. Perfect, made us and all of them laugh. I love the sincerity here and the comforting vibe. I actually feel quite bereft we don’t live next door it’s so good.

We popped in for a very late lunch and had the best Cullen skunk we have ever tasted. We were offered a choice of a roll of a cheese scone with it. The owners were very friendly and surprised us with 6 scones on the house to take away......they were freshly made every day and would not be served the next day. We are occasional visitors and have never been disappointed with the food and the welcome.
