We were staying in a little cottage a mile down the road for a week around Cumbria and this was the closest and ended up being one of the best little bolt holes of bliss in the Duddon Valley. So welcoming, it became a local for my husband and I and if we ever move up there, we’ll be back in being local like a shot. The food was extensive with a separate superb vegetarian and vegan menu. I have been struggling with a mutated smell and taste for two years and they were so accommodating when I asked for 3 chips with my curry, and 3 was what I had on the plate. Perfect, made us and all of them laugh. I love the sincerity here and the comforting vibe. I actually feel quite bereft we don’t live next door it’s so good.

Having read the wonderful reviews for this pub, we can only assume we visited on an off day. The pub itself and the staff were very nice, however, the food was mediocre at best dry over cooked burger, frozen chips and dry chicken. When asked about the veggie option, it was just a frozen tesco veggie burger for £14. Won’t be back!

Having walked over from Coniston on Easter Saturday we were ready for our lovely lunch. We were a group of 7 adults, one child and a dog and we were made to feel very welcome at the Newfield. Our food was wonderful. I had a burger which came with a lovely oniony relish, salad and the best chips I have had for a long time. I shard a hearty and generous steamed ginger pud and custard with my husband which was also excellent. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. There is a nice warm stove, some fascinating old photos on the walls, and a great beer garden with a play area.

Really lovely pub in the Lake District. I’ve had the burger here before and it was amazing. I came back today thinking they’d never top my previous one, but how wrong I was. Unbelievably succulent meat cooked to perfection with a delicious onion relish. My wife had the Cajun fish and said that was excellent too. Good beers on tap as well. Thoroughly recommend!

Eight of us had lunch here on Easter Saturday. The service was friendly and efficient, and the home made food really good. I had steak and ale pie with chips, then sticky toffee pudding. I’d recommend both - but the dishes the other members of my party had also looked great. All in all it was a great pub lunch, and I will be back.

Absolutely faultless food and hospitality! We were a large group (21) and booked in for two lunchtimes knowing how busy it can get. We were greeted with a very warm welcome and the food started to come out as soon as we were ready. The food was fantastic, from the more simple dishes - jacket potato - to the potted shrimp, steak pie and Lamb Henry everything was piping hot and absolutely delicious. My personal recommendation is the steak pie - homemade with a rich gravy, and the chips are immense. We are going again in June and I'm already looking forward to it!

We were made to feel really welcome as soon as we walked through the door by the hostesses KAREN and TRACEY. They were both really helpful and friendly. My wife and I both ordered the half roast chicken which came with chips and salad. This was a very generous portion which we really enjoyed. There was also a good selection of drinks and everything was reasonably priced. We would have stayed longer but it was getting dark and we had a 2 mile walk back to our cottage. We highly recommend this venue. Cathy and John , Birmingham.

The Newfield Inn is a popular spot for hikers. It's a charming historic building with a bustling bar and restaurant. The restaurant area is quite small for the number of hikers and walkers (and dogs!) who stop by, but the patio offers additional seating. The menu is a little limited, but I had an excellent butternut squash soup, and the fish and chips were quite good. There is a small parking area right outside the front of the inn, which is tucked away in a fairly isolated area near Hall Dunnerdale.

We have had dinner here quite a few times as a big family party. It is one of the very few pubs around here that serves a good choice of vegetarian meals as well as meat ones. The majority of places have a token vegetarian option which is often not appealing and with several vegetarians sometimes with us it is very difficult to find anywhere with a reasonable choice. Choice of beers and ciders good too. Lovely location of course. Dogs very welcome.

I was on holiday for a week in isolated cottage for my 70th birthday a 1 mile walk from Newfield Inn my wife prebooked a table for 2 one month before holiday as to be sure of a table at 6.30 pm. it was fantastic weather for the area that week quite unknown I was told.got to pub 15 mins early spoke to bartender he said we had a choice of reserved tables ordered our meal (steaks of coarse) got drinks on a tab as barman suggested feeling great sat in garden having drinks waiting for meal 15 mins later went in to table to wait for meal time at this stage time is 6.35 ,to save anybody coming to tell us meal was ready,at 7.15 I thought 1 hour is a bit much to wait went to bar and said you have not forgotten our meal have you oh no he said,so went and sat down again another 20 mins went by the lady on next table spoke to us and said her children were famished as she was camping and had waited 1 hour. I would have had another drink while waiting but did not want to spoil my meal ....burgers and chips were coming out to people who had just recently arrived in pub left right and centre “ha ha”what a joke at 7.45 my wife called bartender over and asked what was happening he said he would go and check a few minutes later he came back to us and said they were just started to cook our meal with that I said forget the orderi will pay my tab go home to my holiday cottage and have. a cheese toasty

Visited here at the end of a walk. It is an old traditional pub with an open fire and very poor toilet facilities. Food was available and we had the homemade soup. The potion was small but tasty. Overall, the few other customers on this Sunday afternoon appeared to locals. This property is in a remote location and if before venturing there you need information about opening times etc the landlady reported that she relies on her potential customers accessing Facebook. Perhaps she doesn’t appreciate that 31% of the UK population does not use Facebook! (Based on data about internet usage from eMarketer)

We have just had a weekend at the Newfield in the attached self catering flat. It was such great value I am reluctant to tell people as it'll bool up even quicker. Firstly they really look after their cask beer. The selection from various Cumbrian breweries were in fantastic condition, just the job after a lo g drive or a day on a wet fellside. Between myself and my partner we sampled Cumberland sausage, the house burger, pasta and gammon. All were cooked fresh to order and very good quality indeed. The beer and food was fairly priced and the atmosphere in this cosy smart pub made it very hard to leave. If you want to just drop off the grid for a few days and enjoy the best of English hospitality in stunning rugged surroundings, this is surely the place you need to visit. We'll be back.

We visited the Newfield Inn for the first time after a long day in the local fells. This is a traditional no frills pub with a friendly atmosphere and where you can rock up in your soggy walking gear, but the pub grub is of the very best quality and does not disappoint. All the usuals on the menu - we had scampi chips and Cumberland sausage and mustard mash - but good flavours and hearty portions. We had a sharing starter of tempura vegetables, two mains and a shared pud (the chocolate and fudge sundae is very big!) plus couple of rounds of drinks for £50 and we were very nicely fed and watered. The staff were also very friendly and attentive. 100% recommend.

We did warn them in advance and book a table! We were staying in a cottage not too far away and arranged to walk with friends and stop for lunch. The pub was a welcome resting place as there really isn't anything in the area for miles around. The staff were really friendly and welcomed us and our furry friends, with special treats for them! The food was hearty and reasonable and just what we needed. In fact so good that we returned for dinner a few days later and had an equally good meal. The pub on that night went above and beyond in their service helping a number of stranded walkers sheltering from very heavy rain and arranging taxis for them to get across to Eskdale as the rivers were high and the stepping stones not passable. A big thank you for making our week away even more special and for providing such welcoming hospitality.

We live a few miles from the Newfield and dine there occasionally for a change from our local. On this occasion our booking was taken by a very bubbly young lady who greeted us when we arrived and turned out to be in charge of the bar. The place was pretty full; a table was reserved for us but we decided to sit at the bar till our food was ready. When our order was taken, we were warned that there might be a wait as it was cooked to order. However, the wait was not excessive.I had a smoked salmon tagliatelle and my wife had the steak and ale pie. Both were delicious and just the right amount, but were trumped by the Affogato sweet which simply could not be faulted for taste and value.I was impressed throughout by the staff. They all looked quite young (maybe that's me getting old) but they were all exemplars of informal English service, pleasant and efficient. Nobody was left with dirty plates in front of them which is one of my bugbears in some places. The bill for two courses plus drinks for 2 people was just over £40, which I thought was very good value.

Took the opportunity to taste both the beer and food a couple of times while staying nearby. Beer, a reasonable selection of local brews - to be admired as Cumbria has some delights that are not always widely known. The food is prepared to order so may take a little longer but none the worse for that. The range is good solid food that while it won't set the world on fire is heart1u, tasty, well cooked and a pleasure to eat.Try the steak and stout pie if it is there on the specials board - a good pie that puts some well known brands to shame for the meat content alone. The fish and chips were a delight.Just a small caution the pub trains the staff on the job BUT rest assurred they are willing and want to do a good job and for the most succeed.Dogs and children welcome and there is a beer garden to the rear.Review title? Visited for lunch whilst walking down the Duudon Valley, looks a proper village pub with v friendly welcome from barman, v quiet inside and they had had a busy weekend, interesting and varied menu, not v exciting beers ( I was looking forward to Theakstons which I read they had but they haven't had that for a long time), we ate the Cumberland sausage with mash and the ploughmans with lots of different cheeses. Sadly it was all quite poor with the sausages either reheats or overcooked with thick skins and little taste, the bread was a little stale and the cheese cut thin and also a dry. In hindsight we should have send it all back but by the time it arrived we just wanted to get on walking. So overall very disappointing, it could be that we got leftovers from the weekend, we may revisit but reading over reviews it does seem to be a little hit and miss with food.

Visited here from the nearby campsite, although they were very busy they let us have a table for a couple of hours. The meals were excellent and I had the sticky toffee pud for dessert :) probably the best I've ever tasted.

Arriving in the pub at 6:30 pm having checked that they were serving until 9 I thought I was safe. However, at 7 pm I was told (as were many others) that they could take no more orders as they had had one big order in that would take them all evening to fill. This was odd as the place was half empty. I saw no one get fed in the next hour. We left hungry.

We just popped in because we were driving by and only had drinks but the place was quite busy for mid-afternoon. We found it really welcoming and if we pass near again closer to nose-bag time we'll definitely try it. It looked to be selling proper home made food and prices were reasonable. Consistent with other reviews. And the drive through the valley is quite splendid so there's every reason to be passing by.

Service was a bit slow but maybe that's just the way in a remote Lake District village. Maybe everyone in this village is just not in a hurry? Sadly some of our group were really hungry so it did get a bit annoying to have to wait so long. But when it arrived it was good. Would I travel all this way again to a remote location for the experience? Probably not. Would I go again if I was in the area? Probably yes.

We just dropped in on the offchance, on our way to Wastwater, for a beer and a sandwich, but were delighted by the friendly welcome - and by the excellent sandwiches. A charming detail - on the wall near the fireplace was a handwritten poem about the pub by a 16-year-old girl. Worth reading on the wall too - a report about the Seathwaite Riots of 1904. Altogether a pleasure to visit this pub.

Excellent roast beef dinner, great pint to go with it followed by delicious homemade pineapple upside down pudding. Friendly and prompt service. Can't fault anything.

Last time I called in here (different owners), I couldn't get a meal before 5.30 (ish). This time I spotted that they are serving food right through the afternoon. The gammon was very good and the plate was filled with good things, including home-made chips. Molly the Collie received a warm welcome and a Bonio. Prices seemed ok. So, this visit after a 10 mile walk in cool December, was just the job.

We visited last night for dinner. My husband has fish and chips, and he's pretty much a fish and chips expert. He said it was the best they'd ever had. I had the gammon and beef burger. It was very tasty, however just a tad too salty. But everything is clearly homemade, right down to the tartare sauce and coleslaw. Lots of local ales on tap. Including Dent Brewery, our fave. Then we visited today for lunch. My husband has fish fingers and I had mussels. Both were divine. Dogs are welcome and greater with a bonio. Very friendly staff. Lots and lots of garden birds there too. Great for twitchers. Chef friendly too.

This is what a good pub should be like.Great food, I liked the cumberland sausage and black pudding, my wife had a good hot chicken and brie sandwich. The pub had a nice fire with great conversation as locals shared pub quix answers. Hint try to smuggle a small gift onto the mantlepiece above the fire.Do not drink much ofthe local beer before going to the roman fort , but you might need it after!

Visited here with two dogs after a good walk, our first time in the dude on valley. felt welcome from the moment we walked in, bar staff very friendly and dogs made to feel as welcome as we were. (One of the staff came over with a large doggy biscuit each) food nice, liked the fact that you could order smaller portions. Will definitely return

Called in with group of friends and my daughter. Mentioned my daughter was coeliac and also other intolerances on first eve as I asked to check ingredients on crisps. None of the usual eyes rolling you get in other places when they think you're being fussy. When we returned the next day my daughter asked for a soup and, completely unprompted, barmaid told me they had gluten free bread and dairy free spread. This wasn't advertised as a menu option but linked to short interaction the previous night. Food and beer as good as the service too and better than a lot of places.

Popped in for lunch having been walking in the area. Although the pub was nearly empty (not surprising at 12.15 on a Friday out of season) I immediately felt a good atmosphere. There were a few local beers available and an extensive menu. I had a bowl of wild mushroom soup with walnut pesto-amazing!! I noticed that you could also have scones and tea/coffee so something for each time of day. There are plenty of seats inside and out, interesting things on the walls. Staff were great, would definitely recommend this pub. Open 11am to 11pm.

Well worth the long drive. Lovely place with amazing views. Very friendly staff and my hubby had a pint of something or other which he said was a 'good pint'....and he knows his ales! Not had the food yet but nice outdoor area and can imagine it will be spectacular out there in winter (if you can get to it!). We'll be back.

Lovely food freshly made. The staff were very friendly. The pub was busy with a range of users. Very family and dog friendly. The menu was enhanced by an interesting variety of food on the specials board and much of the food was locally sourced! Will definitely be going again!

Went twice in one day it was such a nice pub. Despite being swamped by large numbers of customers the staff were very welcoming and friendly and dealt with the numbers and the inevitable problems that produces very well. Went back for supper which was excellent - traditional pub food with an individual touch - home made chips, tatre sauce, relishes etc. - locally sourced meat etc. Great beer too.

I was a regular visitor to this pub twenty years ago when and it was a fun place to be in a lovely part of the world. recently re-visited after a long absence for a couple of drinks, still a lovely part of the world with friendly staff but not quite the pull it used to be.

A recent change of management left us really disappointed in this wonderful pub we have been visiting for many years. Unfriendly welcome and some of the most dire pub food I have had in a long time. We may have have caught them on an off day but will think twice before eating here again. Such a shame as it has been a family favourite for such a long time. I really hope the new owners get a grip.

I've been coming to this place for 25 years and it's a great little pub/restaurant in the heart of a quiet secret gem of a valley. The new owners here seem to be doing a great job, and the service is great

We went here twice in one week as it was so good. The chef was so helpful and made sure my daughter got a suitable meal as she could not have anything with dairy or soya due to allergies. The food was brilliant and delicious. The Mediterranean chicken is a must have! Will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Whenever we visit the lake District we try to see the Duddon Valley as it is one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited. Each time we call into the Newfield Inn where there is always a warm welcome. On our last visit we were on our scooter and had got a proper soaking from the offset, we arrived at the Newfield 15 minutes before opening time but were not left stood outside in the rain but welcomed in by the new landlady to drip all over her freshly mopped ancient stone floor. This inn has a lovely feel to it, it has a warmth and friendliness about it that is more than the just the present licencees happy warm smile, it is as though the whole place wants to shelter you, as it has done for so many travellers over the centuries and make you feel at ease, and want to stay a little longer or to return. Hard to fully explain,I would just call in if you are passing and see what you think.

Actually located 6 miles from Broughton down a single track road which takes an age to travel down but the scenery is worth the trip. Typical country pub with open fire and a beautiful beer garden at the back overlooking the mountains. Food is a grade up from your standard pub food although service can be slow. Several real ales on show too all at reasonable prices. Offers accommodation and walks from the pub too.

Went climbing in Dunnerdale for the weekend and ate here Saturday night with friends. Definitely not disappointed!!! 3 of us ordered Beef and ale pie, delicious!!! Really quaint country pub in a fantastic location. Will definitely be back. Stayed in a b & b owned by previous owners of the pub. Brilliant hosts. Massive comfy bed and scrummy breakfasts. Ask at the pub for info as they haven't got a website yet!!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

My husband and I were staying at the nearby county hotel and decided to call in for a coffee on the way into the shopping area. The coffee was great and the millionaires slice was lovely. Service was very good.
