Photographs of the two rooms with open fires look delightful, especially the room with the old fashioned range and hearth, but it seems there is every chance, even if you book weeks in advance, you won't be seated in either but placed in a small room at the rear warmed only with electric heaters. This room should be reserved for walk-ins, or have it made clear when booking - you must book by phone - that you will not be sitting in one of the rooms featured prominently on the website, or, indeed, online reviews. You have an unspoilt interior but this unsatisfactory arrangement is like a throwback to a time when pubs did not have to try too hard. This wasn't putting off punters on the night we visited however. The small bar area was packed. And although there was nobody at all sitting in one of the dining areas with open fire we were informed all of these tables were reserved and directed to the back room. Food may be a notch above average for a regular pub but is short of gastro standard. There appears to be some work going on at the rear currently. Difficult to find a space and several inconsiderately parked vehicles.

Booked in for lunch with friends whilst staying locally for the weekend. What a great pub, food was excellent, really good choice of menu and good value for money. Made to feel very welcome by staff and locals alike, couldn’t do enough for us. Shame we weren’t staying longer as would definitely return.

We often pass through this pub when on holiday from Leicester, Food is always lovely, and usually served in good time. Atmosphere is lovely and very friendly staff. The only thing that could be improved is that the chicken is often slightly over done and a tad tough, other than this the meals are 5/5

We were staying in coniston over new year, checked out trip advisor where the reviews were good. The reviews were an understatement, the belly pork starter and the duck main was unbelievable. Was so good we booked back in the next day and I chose the same again. The meals I had at this pub were up there with some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Was also priced very reasonably. We will certainly visit again!

Excellent gastro food in an ancient inn. 9 of us visited on a Sunday evening and had a great meal. We were asked to preorder beforehand d which was fine. The drinks and service matched the quail out of the food. Superb!

Four of us visited the Blacksmiths’ Arms today for lunch. The building is full of character and history with low ceilings and old flagstone floors. The food was first class (the potato dauphinois is the best we have ever had and the Black Forest sundae is to die for) and the service friendly and helpful. A memorable visit and we will be back.

Lovely meals. I wasn't too big on some of the other places in the local area when I was visiting, then I found the Stan Laurel Inn - the food is great, much more special than your typical 'pub grub'. I'd definitely visit again if I'm around Ulverston. edit: went back after visiting the area for a walk. Curried mince special was good, served with nice freshly made chips.

Great food and friendly service. We ate enormous club sandwiches, looking out at beautiful views of Ambleside, while our dog slept peacefully under the table.

Booked for a birthday treat. Beautiful location. Staff very friendly and prompt service. Nice touches in room and beautiful rooms but windows and bathroom looking slightly tired (helm crag room, no 27). A lot of stairs. Food delicious. Not sure why they didn't use guacamole rather than garden peas (not crushed as per menu) on breakfast with poached egg. Spa is lovely but is only small so gets busy easily and then only chairs are outside.

Great for my autistic kids, little park at the beer garden enclosed and no where for my kids to be able to escape 😀
