This pub is exceptional. It's about the beer & a warm hospitality unmatched anywhere. Becoming a weekly trip and never disappointed by the quality of the micro brewery here and the range of guest beers. Nice ambience (not too noisy ) and lovely bar staff. The owners have created & maintained something truly unique but remember it's all about the the beer here. Food is all homemade and unlike anything elsewhere - filling & tasty. Great place (- unless you really like noisy rooms with electric pumps and sanitised fatty food in which case don't bother!)

I've been here a few times and always had a nice afternoon. Good range of drinks but not your normal lager, cider, etc, reasonable prices too. You can get pasties and filled Yorkshire puddings, I've had the pasties with mushy peas and it's always really nice. Only improvement for this little pub is the staff could be a little friendlier/jollier.

I described this place last year as a 'Railway Inn with a Heart of Gold'. Its a small pub & hotel on the main road opposite Foxfield Railway Station. It has four bedrooms and has a genteely 'run down' feel to it. It is simply one of the best pub-hotels in the UK. The owners have a passion for beer and this is reflected in the wide choice available - all hand pumped (+ bottles?) and of excellent quality. Don't ask for fizzy beer here - you will probably be escorted off the premises by the drinkers. There is a very good selection of whiskies. Food is served up until 7.00pm - no orders after then. Meals are substantial. I opted for a Yorkshire pudding, which was a good size. This came with plenty of (decent) roast beef and assorted vegatables, with proper gravy and, as an extra, two 'proper' roast potatoes. You may have to wait: there are board games, books, and a piano to while away the time. There is no TV and no music - except on music nights. This is a community pub - the local book club meets in the back. Rooms are OK - nothing special but perfectly OK. They don't have TV/radio - which I can live with; a kettle is a greater lost (but these are in the 'Residents Lounge' together with a big box of biscuits). Breakfasts are substantial. The Pow only accepts 'real money', BTW - not plastic. Some people may have 'problems' with the PoW but really this is a superb place. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Awesome friendly little independent pub, views over the estuary, just by the railway station - very welcoming. We stopped for Sunday lunch, which was gorgeous and very reasonably priced. All home cooked fresh, with piles of veg and a giant Yorkshire pud. They’re a CAMRA pub with loads of real ale, and a fab selection of whisky & gin too. Worth a visit - one thing to flag, they are cash only, so make sure you hit a cashpoint before you visit.

Popped in today for a cup of tea to warm up after a visit to Swinside stone circle in a blizzard (that's another story!). Having seen some lovely looking plates of food going past and as it was after 4pm by then, we decided to have something to eat. Our son (a vegetarian) opted for the cheese, potato and onion pasty with salad, I chose the turkey roast, and my partner the beef roast. We were told there would be a 30-40 minute wait for the pasty to be cooked (the roasts would have been much quicker but we opted for them to come out together) and as it was still early, we were happy to sit by the roaring fire drinking tea, reading the papers, and playing board games from the extensive selection. When the food turned up, it looked delicious and tasted just as good. I have never been served such an extensive selection of vegetables! There were roast spuds of course, roast parsnips, parsley mash, cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, roasted mushrooms and tomato, baby sweetcorn, brussels sprouts, mashed swede, carrots, and courgette! Just a little of each and all perfectly cooked. The meat was plentiful and very good, there was a generous portion of yorkshire pud and, very importantly, an abundant supply of very nice gravy. The pasty was also declared to be really good and the salad was very varied with avocado, pea shoots, rocket, lots of seeds, and even blueberries, as well as the more usual salad ingredients. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, and all that food plus our pot of tea and a glass of lemonade, cost less than £30. Just remember to bring cash as they don't currently accept cards. It's also worth mentioning that dogs are welcome in the pub, it has 2 open fires, a piano, lots of musical events, it's also a brewery, and is owned by the community. My kind of place in every respect!

Stopped off at the Prince of Wales on a whim after hiking Scafell Pike, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it does seem like a nice local pub, they had a weird selection of food on offer and when my friend asked for some chips, we were told they don't do it. Settled for a bacon butty which was more than adequate and most definitely hit the spot for her. They did have some good ales on offer, if you want Guinness, Becks or any of your run of the mill lagers then jog on. We had a cherry lager which was very nice. The locals are very friendly there and will give you some good banter, a good pub always has its regulars and we had the pleasure of talking to some. It is more of a local pub but has a lot of character to it.

FRom outside it looks a bit shabby - doubts are dispelled when you go in. At the end of a days walking, with a big pack - its the promised land. The PoW is welcoming, (although some of the staff can be a bit 'quirky' [not Stuart or Linda]). The beer, as might be expected here is superb - there is a renowned brewery on site, the food is good and wholesome 'rare ballast for an empty belly'. The bedrooms are good, standard en-suite rooms. No TV/radio or kettle (at least not in my room), but these, and a big tin of biscuits are in the upstairs lounge. A substantial breakfast, with only the best ingredients. Will I go back? As long as I have life left in my limbs - yes.

Brilliant value for money especially if you're a CAMRA member. It does everything you need for a down to earth no frills b&b/pub. The rooms are functional, clean and above the pub so don't expect total quiet until after closing time. Beer and whisky choice is fantastic and cheap! I have given this 5* because it met everyone of my expectations - but then I have stayed before. If you are expecting a 5* establishment you will be disappointed - it does what it says on the tin. It attracts many repeat visitors. Handy for the Southern Lakes and with a train station opposite the front door. In this area I don't see the point in paying 2 or 3 times more for what is essentially a room in a pub.

We decided to take a trip to Foxfield to sample the Prince of Wales on Friday 01/07/16 . The 4 of us got the 6.30pm train from Barrow-in-Furness . Train running bit late so it was 6.54 when we got to the bar . Decided what drinks to have then asked if we could order food ( having heard about the pasties !! ) to be told sharply , no we stop serving at 7pm !!! It was 4mins past 7 ! When we asked nicely if they would still serve us she went in the kitchen to ask if we could get food & came back & said no you can't -too late . Maybe Landlady/ barmaid could have said to us when we arrived to order food quickly because they were almost finishing then done our drinks . If it had been 7.30 we could have understood that , but couple of mins past 7 seems harsh . Lots of their customers arrive on that train (we were the only ones that night )so surely they understand sometimes it could be couple mins late . They were still bringing out food at 7.30 so kitchen still up & running . Needless to say we had our drinks & got the next train back to Barrow & had a great meal in Furness Railway . They must have lost about £80 or £90 because we were planning to stay till the last train . My husband took the glasses back to the bar on the way out & said goodnight to her twice & she never even acknowledged him , she never smiled the whole time we were there . Maybe we caught her on a bad night !! Shame because we'd heard so much about it but def won't be going back !!

Their fame for pasties is justified, generous, tasty and freshly made. Somewhat qwerky pub that brews it's own excellent beer and only serves food until 19.00. The pasties are famous and rightly so, they don't serve chips so there's not the usual all pervading chip fat smell. The portions are generous and come with mushy peas, salad or beans so chips would be too much. Excellent range of beers and spirits.

The prince of wales is a great place for a pint or 3 ,4,5,6,7 …As I had a room I could indulge myself to my heart’s content . We were there during a “champagne festival “ where various bit of fizz could be purchased by the glass so that kept my partner happy / sloshed.Rooms are basic but honest and far superior from any budget chain and better priced. My only issue was the food is very simple and not inspiring ( THIS PUB IS ABOUT DRINK ) in that my pasty pastry was raw and gave terrible dyspepsia . True , the amount of booze I had necked may not have helped.Despite this , absolutely no problem with a 4 out of 5 rating from me.

Fantastic views across the estuary on a fine day and the pub empties and fills in time with the trains that arrive in the station across the way. Travelling by train on the one of the greatest railway journeys’ in the world to Foxfield sets you up perfect to appreciate this hidden gem, that’s just across the road from the stationFantastic choice of real ales, including their own Tigertops brews, Fruit beers and ciders, all served perfectly by the very helpful and knowledgeable staff. The food & ale choices are all chalked up on the boards (No posh menus here) can highly recommend the Pasties they are simply to die for – Forget Cornwall, these are the best.Lovely rustic furniture, place mats & cutlery like your mother used to have - and a warm welcoming real fire for when it’s cold outside.Did I mention the view! – The Duddon estuary, with the backdrop of the Duddon fell & black Combe, simply stunning on a clear day.By far the best pub in the Lake District, but don’t tell everyone as it’s our Cumbrian secret!!!

The pub brews its own real ale and often has events such as port and cheese weekends. The homemade pasties are to die for especially with salad . Everyone is friendly and you can get there by train.

A cosy little pub in the middle of nowhere - always busy with visitors attracted from near and far by the friendly atmosphere, good choice of real ale and excellent home made pasties.

Visited here Saturday afternoon with my nine year old daughter and dog. Super atmosphere for the middle of the afternoon with live bluegrass singer - great choice if beers at very reasonable prices for this neck of the woods - did not have food but it smelt delicious - daughter was very impressed as was i

Passed by this pub on a number of occasions mainly due to its drab exterior, what a fool I have been. The food and service were unquestionably faultless, the surrounding are cosy and warm, if not a little eccentric. Tables large enough to accommodate my family of 8, with plenty space around you. Board games and books line a wall which the children can entertain themselves with. Made for a welcome change from the general chain of pubs one as become accustomed too. A credit to the owners and staff.

I have visited a lot of pubs in Britain and I have to say that I have not visited a better pub. The beer is always excellent quality. The bar staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The food is also very good and excellent value. However you visit the Prince of Wales for the beer. The beer is also very good value and it is often £1 a pint less than White Heart at Bouth.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

An impromptu choice to visit Plato's today and what a brilliant decision and choice. We had a really superb meal and were made to feel very welcome by Ronnie, who looked after us! We had the fish finger sourdough sandwich and the chicken and paprika mayo sandwich...accompanied by parmesan and truffle chips 🍟 😋 absolutely delicious. All washed down with a delightful glass of rose wine. We will definitely be returning. It was such a great culinary treat.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
