We popped in for a very late lunch and had the best Cullen skunk we have ever tasted. We were offered a choice of a roll of a cheese scone with it. The owners were very friendly and surprised us with 6 scones on the house to take away......they were freshly made every day and would not be served the next day. We are occasional visitors and have never been disappointed with the food and the welcome.

We found this little tea room completely by chance. The welcome was very warm & friendly, the dog was also welcome. The all day breakfast was outstanding & great value for money. We took away cakes & coffees for our onward journey. If you’re passing then pop in you won’t be disappointed. A first class establishment.

Needed to break our journey, and what a treat to find this place! Excellent service, lovely frothy cappuccinos, and the Cullen Skink with cheese scone was absolutely delicious. Sadly we didn't get as far as the cakes, which looked nice and were very varied flavours, but hopefully there'll be another opportunity. Lovely cards for sale, too.

The welcome could not have been warmer than that received from Suzi, Andy and the staff today as the husband and I popped in for lunch. The restaurant was busy but no one was left unattended and everything brought to the table in quick time. I had the meatballs (legendary in those parts) and husband enjoyed the cullen skink with cheese scone very much. Food was fabulous, warm and very reasonably priced. Would recommend without hestation and will be returning another day to sample more of the wide menu. Afternoon teas are available also. Great experience.

Gorgeous atmosphere in this dog friendly cafe. Christmas decorations were up and we were welcomed warmly and shown to a table. Asked if there might be anything vegan I could have and told that not only would the soup be suitable but that they were happy to adapt what they could on the menu. After speaking to the chef they returned with options to choose from. Had warm roast veg and vcheese ciabatta which was delicious followed by a soya latte. Some cakes are vegan friendly too (and delicious as well!) Excellent place to stop in after a walk. Will definitely be back!

The greeting you get on entering this lovely wee tea room just makes you feel positive before you are even seated. The staff are all very friendly and genuinely interested in why you are passing through. Whether you are just looking for a coffee and a scone or cake or something more substantial then give this place a try. Unfortunately, we had set this as a morning coffee stop so had to resist the temptation of something substantial but we will be back for our lunch next time we are passing. Prices are very reasonable to the point I thought they had made a mistake when paying for our table of six bikers. The staff are biker friendly. There are outside and inside tables.

We went to Laurel Bank tea-room on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews. It was not all bad, but the main dishes were a disaster. The good bits. The staff were nice. Service was OK. The chips were good. The home baking did not reach the heights of some of the over-the-top reviews, but it was OK. The problems My wife had pan fried salmon, with chips. The salmon portion was very small, and almost half of it was uncooked, and inedible. I had an avocado salad with mushrooms and pancetta. The avocado slices were OK, and well-dressed, but the mushroom and pancetta portions were miniscule, chopped into tiny pieces, and scattered among the salad leaves, making it difficult to eat. The dish was without substance, and had it not been for my wife's chips, of which I pinched half, I would have been starving. As it was, the only reason we also ordered home baking was that we were both still hungry. I felt that aspiration in the kitchen did not match up with the ability to deliver.

Feel let down by owners who have such a nice spot conveniently located in a village with nothing else but a convenience store which is excellent by the way. This place with liquor license, large menu and complete lack of understanding how to prepare a decent sandwich or what quiche ingredients are. It’s not so complicated. We couldn’t eat anything what we ordered apart from coffee. This was the most dissatisfying experience of our holiday in Scottish Borders.

Laurel Bank Tea Room was one of those sweet surprises you stumble across while traveling. We had been driving on a stunning, quiet, road on a bank holiday, and were hungry when we saw the sign for the café. The scones, made by the daughter, were superlative, the best scones two travelers from California have ever enjoyed. After the tea we decided to order the egg mayonnaise sandwiches to take with us but wound up watching chaffinches and enjoying the patio on a glorious sunny day. The Laurel Bank cafe bar is a great place to warm up with excellent homemade food when it’s miserable and cold (as it often is!) outside. Situated on the junction of Broughton Main Street and Biggar Road, this is a small venue serving meals, teas and cakes or something a bit stronger later in the day. A locals and visitors venue alike, where one can sit and just natter in front of a log fire and pass the time of day. The staff are very friendly and attentive and there’s no rush to move once comfortably seated in one of the small areas. The macaroni cheese is to die for and the sandwiches are fresh and hearty. Been going to this tearoom for years, and always had good food. However, the recent change of ownership leaves a lot to be desired. My order was taken, but took an age to materialise as the staff member said she had "forgotten there was anyone there". Not a good start. Then I received a cup, milk and a tea bag, but had to remind them about the need for hot water.....it seemed so disorganised all round. When it came, he soup was totally tasteless, watery and unpleasant, and the tray bake the consistency of concrete. Sorry Laurel Bank, but despite the cosy new decor (which is a definite improvement), the standard of food needs to be better than this!

We stopped in this tearoom on our way home from Edinburgh on a Tuesday afternoon. We were given a menu and I asked for the baked potato and ploughman's and my wife asked for baked potato and cheese. The waitress returned to say "sorry we have no potatoes left" so i asked for a bacon and black pudding roll. The waitress returned to say "sorry we have no black pudding" so we opted for a bacon roll each. The waitress returned to the kitchen and made a comment about running out of food and the cook replied "but it's good that we're running out though" I felt like saying no it's not if you call into a tearoom for lunch and you're starving! After discovering that they also had no scones left we decided to move on to Moffat and eat a proper meal there. Service was fine and the pot of tea was really good but I think the proprietor better get an idea of how to order food before the cash flow and customer base both start to shrink

I don't know what happened this past Sunday when we arrived at 1.15pm expecting a lovely Sunday roast, to be served instead reheated, (just warm) slices of tasteless roast beef with accompanying "pigs in blankets" (with roast beef!!). The accompanying vegetables had, I suspect, been cooked the previous day and reheated - just. Looked like a stand-in working in the kitchen, and no sign of the chef who had been serving marvellous food two weeks previous. If there had been a problem, they should have said and all would have been forgiven. We wish them every success in their new enterprise, but the catering business has to be a fast learning curve. We will give them another try in six months' time.

We both stopped in to the Laurel Bank tearoom on the way south. Nice location and fairly busy on a Saturday morning. It did take some time to get the attention of a waitress to get a menu, then even longer to take an order and then a further long wait to get service. The food - filled rolls - were nice as was the coffee. Unfortunately it appeared very chaotic with the staff having no idea who was waiting for a menu and who had ordered food. A couple we saw popped in, were ignored for 20 minutes, so just walked out. They hadn't even been given a menu. Disappointing as the filled rolls were good and the place looked lovely and welcoming!

It's also just a 15 min walk up the hill to see the Castle rig stone circle. There's a handy small wooded area opposite which is great for a quick dog walk first thing or before bed. Breakfasts very nice, excellent cooked breakfast and fresh coffee, but it would have been nice to have some fresh fruit on the buffet. My fruit scone was huge and delicious too. Very friendly service and a great place to relax with a coffee or a meal.

Lunch outdoors, in the quiet garden of this cafe/restaurant, is worth making a journey for, on its own. A very warm welcome, excellent food and coffee, make this a Borders gem. On a popular cycle route from Biggar to Peebles, and on the footpath along the old railway line, you won't regret a stop here.

Good to see the Laurel Bank under new management. The new decor is so much more welcoming, staff so friendly but the main reason I suggest you stop if traveling the A701 or fancy a run into some glorious countryside is the wonderful food and drink. No more small portions. Food coked fresh and only one for the brave is Big Al's Breakfast! Its enormous. Pic of Kaz's breakfast. Quality of ingredients amazing from cakes, bread, breakfast, coffee and tea. Something for everyone.Karen and Alan and their staff have clearly put a lot of effort into making this a great place again. We will be back

We Dropped in by chance 4 days after the new management, last of Karens Kitchen A702, Kippit Layby, West Linton EH46 7HS, had taken over, well i had the large all day breakfast @ 1.30 and when they say large they mean it HUGE! is more like it so dont worry about leaving hungry, Mrs had the small?? breakfast and that is the equivalent of a normal one, lovely coffee, local beers in the small bar. We will be back to sample the evening menu when up and running.

Great cafe/restaurant with rear garden. Ideal stop for us on a sunny day yesterday cycling on the Tweed Valley cycleway. I had the whitebait and a pint of the (extremely) local Brought on IPA, and both were excellent.

My partner and I have been here about 3/4 times. The first time it was absolutely amazing and I always wanted to go back. The next 2 times we went one of us was always disappointed. On my last visit I had ordered a steak pie with vegetables and chips. All I ate were the chips because the pie was inedible. The beef tasted soapy and the pie looked like it had been sitting under a hot plate for a really long time. We may have come in late for dinner but that should not effect the quality of the food. It was very disappointing and because it wasn't the first time, we will definitely not be returning for any meals in the future.

We stopped here today for lunch on our way back from Dumfries to Glasgow, I wish we had continued on to be honest. The food was average but quite overpriced. The decor is quite nondescript too, we felt like we were sitting in someone's front room. We were disappointed that our server really couldn't give us the time of day, we started small talk with her a couple of times and she just walked away. I understand if the place was busy, but it wasn't and it doesn't take two minutes to show a little interest in customers. We were left feeling like we were imposing by merely being there. That being said, one of the other servers (an older lady) was friendly and asked if we enjoyed our meal. I guess it just depends who you get.I can see how this cafe would appeal to some people, it has a nice seating area out front and they allow dogs in. I'm afraid we won't be back though, it was overpriced for what we received.

A little bistro in the village of Broughton. We always stop off here on our way from Dumfries to Edinburgh. It is situated about halfway. A varied well priced menu is presented and food is always fresh and tasty, just what you want for a coffee or lunch break.

Under its new ownership, the Laurel Bank has become an excellent cafe. You can have a snack or a full meal, with imaginative menus, unusual ingredients, all fresh and freshly cooked. Bread, scones and shortbread are baked on the premises, and the preserves are homemade. The service is outstanding -- friendly, and prompt.

On the plus side, it's the only place for miles around, so location makes it a good meeting point. The food was average, chef seems wedded to his fryer. Portions were surprisingly on the small side.Had to send the tomato soup back, was far too salty - uneadable. Service was comical, which at least provided some light relief. Fish and Chip[s was pretty good. Steak & Ale pie (12 quid) was the size of a starter. Will probably give it one more go due to its ideal location.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

An excellent, local menu, very reasonably priced, and warm, real fires. No better way to spend a chilly autumn evening.
