We stopped off at Cafe Waterside whilst on a hike. Thad a caramel latte, carrot cake and scone to go. The menu looked absolutely fantastic and the smell from the kitchen was amazing so I will be heading back for breakfast, brunch or lunch very soon! The cakes are absolutely delicious, very impressed with the size and price. Service was good even though we were only taking away. Really polite and friendly young man serving! We opted to sit on the tables outside, l imagine these must quite busy during better weather. The only downside I would say is that there didn't seem to be much signage to say the cafe was there on the route we took. I think some directions on that you have to go up the stairs and left into the door for the cafe would help too :)

An absolutely appalling Sunday lunch. Staff in hotel reception were too busy chatting to direct us to the restaurant. On entering the restaurant there was no one to book us in, A staff member at the bar continued a casual conversation without acknowledging us. 5 minutes later took us to a table. The vegetarian item was different to the advertised item with our Wowcher deal menu. We ordered and after waiting some time but the starters didn't arrive, instead our main course arrived, we had not had our starter! An afternoon tea also arrived, but was not our order! The main course went back to the kitchen and given the assurance that we would have a completely fresh meal cooked. The server gave the excuse that the 'chef' had his mind on the wedding reception they were also catering for. Our starters were eaten and upon taking away the dirty plates we were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu! (We had not had our main courses). Our main courses arrived but bypassed us to head to a different table, eventually arriving at our table. It was as predicted, very much on the cool side. The image we had seen on Hollin Hall's website was nothing like the meal we were served. The Yorkshire Pudding was small, completely unrisen and undercooked. No stuffing was served with the chicken. The vegetables chopped into small rubbery chunks of carrots, parsnips and onion were rubbery and overcooked. All the food was lukewarm. No checkback was made during the meal. As the plates were cleared we were asked if the meal was OK, but had to be honest and report it was the worst Sunday lunch we had ever eaten. The server apologised saying they were short staffed as they had a wedding on! As we got up to leave no one came to offer the bill or take our voucher, so we had to leave it on their reception desk. No one bid us goodbye or thanked us for our custom. We felt very undervalued. I suggest on such occasions they should not even attempt to serve what they advertise as a Sunday Lunch when they are catering for weddings. Without a doubt we will NOT be returning for any reason. Avoid at all costs.
