We booked for my birthday and thought we would have a nice tea and it was truly awful! Weak and cheap coffee, dry cakes and small sandwiches!!! So awful 😞 the bar manager was lovely and gave us a 100% discount… will not return 🤮🤢

Took my friend for Afternoon Tea, to celebrate her birthday. I could only apologise to her for the shambles., as the food was disgusting. Sandwiches had obviously been frozen as were soggy. The fillings were sparce, as was the waitress. Anything we needed we had to go and find her. A small pot of tea between 2. Only had 1 cup each from it. Had to ask for another pot/hot water. Very disappointed. Will never go again. Not the most expensive but still not worth the price.

The building, the surrounds are absolutely beautiful. The presentation of the afternoon tea was lovely. Unfortunately there wasn't much egg on the egg mayo sandwich so i took it apart to add some extra watercress, only to find a hair. I made the waiter aware and he went to the kitchen. He came back said that as we had asked for no butter we couldn't have a replacement as they all had butter on. Not sure why this was such a big task. Anyway it was left, no apology was given or any other options. Which I did think was a little rude. The scones were lovely. The cakes were OK. The brownie wasn't a brownie, it was like a mass of truffle. It wasn't very nice. The Eton mess was lovely. Overall I would go back maybe for a stay but not for afternoon tea

First of all the pros.... A nice venue in a pretty setting. Peaceful. Friendly and helpful staff (mostly-see ‘cons’). Bargain price on Groupon. £8 each for Prosecco afternoon tea. Prosecco tasted nice but I’m no expert. Sandwich fillings ok. Scones tasty. Other desserts ok. Tea was topped up when we asked as it had cooled off. Where we were seated was nice. Comfy chairs, not too close to anyone (though it was almost empty!) and we enjoyed the open fire in the dining room after the tea. The cons.... The bread seemed cheap and was a bit dry. Some crusts left on and all of us had to cut some off. Usually, when going for afternoon tea in other places, we have been asked when we would like the tea/Prosecco served but here we were served the tea straight away followed by Prosecco about 10 mins later. An odd number of desserts was served between two people. 5 of them were different also, leaving us in the position of choosing which ones we wanted (‘you choose first’ ‘no you’ ‘no, I insist, you choose’ etc etc) surely 2 of each would be better. Finally, after the tea my friend went to the bar to order coffee. I forgot to ask her to order me a decaf and when the member of staff brought it I said (half jokingly), ‘is one a decaf?’ The staff member said, ‘she didn’t order a decaf’ and I said, ‘I know, I forgot to ask her.’ Now, at this point, really great service would have been to say, ‘no problem, I’ll change it for a decaf’, but the staff member just insisted again that I hadn’t ordered a decaf and made no offer to change it. In the grand scheme of things, a small cup of coffee would not cost the hotel much but customer service is everything! As I said in the title, you get what you pay for so I did not expect the quality of the food to be £40 a head standard. The evening was made by the good company of friends meeting up so the cons could not spoil that. PS I wonder why the management don’t comment on the reviews as they used to. There aren’t that many reviews!

We used the groupon voucher, so don't feel like we overpayed. Service was polite , but barely attentive. When we saw them they were great, but we didn't see much of them. I wasn't impressed by seating arrangements. Restaurant was almost completely empty but we were sat right next to another couple, close enough to be able to elbow each other. Tea pots were small, but tea tasted nice. The selection of sandwiches was quite nice, but I did see quite a lot of crust left on them. It did not affect the taste though, which was great. Cakes however.... Oh dear. Ecclair, scones, chocolate ganache dessert - they weren't just 'Not Great', they were barely edible. It seemed that somebody rushes the cooking every few days so customers are left with stale cakes that weren't prepared correctly in the first place. Mini eton mess was lovely. We wished there had been one for each and at least 1 spoon to eat it with however. Would not recommend to friends, would not go again.

Booked Afternoon Tea for two and on arrival a staff member very loudly requested my Groupon Voucher. Taken to a table and served pots of tea, where I suspect the tea bags somewhat inferior as joined up to each other in the pot. Having ordered Vegetarian, I received 2 wet cucumber sandwiches, 1 very nice egg sandwich and a smoked Salmon sandwich!!! No cheese in sight. Staff not in attendance and had to go searching for someone to return the salmon sandwich to, was brought a generous plate of cheese and tomato (my comment was listened to about the lack of cheese), sadly most the afternoon tea sandwiches had generous crust remnants too. No prosecco served, so had to go again searching for staff. Scones were heavy and no spoons were served to access the jam or cream, the chocolate éclair was like cardboard. Sadly we left half the food.

I purchased a voucher for an afternoon tea for a treat for my wife and myself and visited today with high hopes. I always try to see the good in things but to be honest I struggled with Hollins Hall. Firstly we were kept waiting like a couple of bookends at the doorway to the restaurant before either of the staff could spare 30 seconds to seat us, then I was questioned twice by the same waiter over the voucher/booking, we were asked to wait again before we were shown to our table. The overall impression of the place looks ok but then when you look a little closer it’s a shade grubby, my daughter removed a couple of hairs from the table and a dead squashed fly from her seat. We were given tea and coffee, we were never asked what sandwiches or bread we preferred and when we asked for sugar for our drinks it never materialised. The food arrived after a short while and presentation was simple but good, standard sparsely filled sandwiches which were ok The cake platter again was standard cakes Victoria sponge eclairs scones etc. There were no spoons for jam, cream etc and again disappointingly none came when mentioned leaving us to use the teaspoons which were stirred our tea with. The chocolate cake was really dry but worst than that was we had raw scones, really shockingly awful which were inedible. A lady asked if everything was alright to which we replied it wasn’t and she grabbed the raw scones threw them on a tray of a passing waitress and curtly said bring some more but we’d seen enough by now and left never to return. It’s a real shame because it could be so much better but I won’t bother to spend any of my hard earned there.

Visited here with my parents for afternoon tea and what a nightmare!!!! When we first arrived we were pointed to a room by a rude front of house member of staff. We then stood waiting for our table, which we had booked well in advance, for 15 minutes. We were rudely questioned by the waiter about the voucher we were using to pay for it with. When shown to our table, there was a dead fly squished on one of the seats, a coffee stain on another and 2 very long hairs on the table which I removed before sitting down on a seat which was 1/3 lower than the table. When the tea and coffee arrived to the table, the rude waiter did not provide us with sugar, which we then asked said waiter for some .. WHICH WAS NEVER BOUGHT TO OUR TABLE. When the food arrived to our table it was little to be desired - the whole sandwich selection just tasted like margarine. One of the ‘smoked salmon’ sandwiches only had half of the contents, the other half was just bread. As we ate the cakes the scones were raw and we then brought this to the attention of the INCREDIBLY RUDE member of staff, who interrupted us and demanded to another member of staff that we were bought fresh scones, after our complaint about the scones another couple on a separate table also sent their scones back. We felt the member of staff handled the situation very poorly, unprofessional and never once apologised to us. We never saw the ‘fresh’ scones arrive as we left before they came to our table. I’ve been so fortunate to have afternoon tea at some incredible establishments in my life and you cannot even compare them to this monstrosity. I wish there was a 0 star rating because I think my current 1 star rating is too good. There’s nothing wrong with our money is there!!! Absolutely disgusting service!!

Went to the Hollin Hall afternoon tea as a treat for my friend who's birthday it was. It was on a Travelzoo voucher so wasn't expecting the world. What we did receive however was a terribly orchestrated comedy show. It look someone 15 minutes to sit us down when we arrived, no-one around (Hello?) and when we did we were greeted by a lady who looked like she'd had a fight with the Pilsbury dough boy. For a front of house figure at the hotel who was serving us our food, her stained clothes were somewhat offputting. We received our glasses of Prosecco in some very dirty glasses, not one was actually clean. Replaced in some better glasses, we slurped and looked forward to the next round. We received two stacks of afternoon tea sandwiches and cakes. On tucking in, the sandwiches were actually very nice, we were informed that the spare one (already started) was for the next table. She asked what we had taken off it and trotted off, only to appear a few second later with the same one on the next table. After the slight disappointment, we sampled the cakes which didn't help. Is it just me that expects not to have to chop every cake in half so we all try each one? The meringue and the turnover was nice but the rest was stale. To summarise, it wasn't the worst value afternoon tea I've ever had, the surroundings are lovely but think Fawlty Towers on the food and service. If you fancy a giggle this ones for you. I haven't laughed so much in ages

Finding the offer on Groupon I booked an afternoon tea with prosecco here with my friend. The place itself is very grand and picturesque however the service was not to standard nor the food. It took 2 members of staff to take our order (despite it being pre-booked as an afternoon tea voucher) when it arrived the waiter placed it on the table and walked off... previously I have always been told what sandwiches there are and what cakes, but that wasn't the problem. The sandwiches were very basic. The cakes stale and not very nice. We had to find a waiter to ask for our prosecco which was then served in water glasses... apparently they had no flutes due to a wedding. I'm not one for gate crashing a wedding or ruining such an event but serving prosecco in water glasses is not acceptable. Not once were we asked if everything was ok or of we needed more refreshments. It wasn't long before we decided to leave and go somewhere else in the area. Please don't book here for the afternoon tea, there are many other places in the area that will excel your expectations for a similar price.

Myself and two friends just had the unfortunate experience of afternoon tea at hollin hall. The order was wrong and we received another tables food, we had to sit there while builders were drilling and doing work in the next room which is something you do not want to listen to while you are eating. But above all once I asked the manager to box up our food because we wanted to leave after 20 minutes the attitude we received was disgusting and it was apparent that she thought we were being unreasonable?! £15 per head you wouldn't expect to have to deal with that! Will not be returning. Would also recommend a new manager with actual management skills

Purchased a voucher as a Crhrhristmas present for my partner for the afternoon tea direct from the hotel, which ended up being a little more difficult than I first imagined, however it was all sorted easily and I got the voucher in time......booking very simple and easy with No difficulties at all.Arrived on time and were met at reception by the receptionist......the front of house manager was also around and knew our names as well as the booking that we had.....we were then allowed to choose where to sit and chose the main restaurant even though that meant being on our own ..........The waiter / receptionist was very helpful and attentive with our drinks arriving quickly.......the food also arrived quickly so we're quite happy with that........there was a selection of 4 different types of sandwiches which were all tasty (even if the bread on a couple of them was a little hard).........there were then two Victoria sponges, two carrot and walnut cakes and 4 scones with big pots of jam and clotted cream......and not to forget a jam Bakewell!!!! All of which were presented on a cake display with fresh strawberries and redcurrants......The hotel is starting to look a little tired in places with some of wall paper peeling and a 're-paint wouldn't go amiss, however we ventured over to the other side of the hotel with bar and a room that was set for a wedding and, I have to say it looked beautiful.......Would I recommend you go, yes if you are out that way......otherwise, as a special treat, it didn't necessarily have that extra 'X' factor

My friend & I went to Hollin Hall for afternoon tea a few months back now (sorry for the late review), my friend had purchased a deal from 'Living Social' (or similar website) as what she thought was a treat for us both and have time together for a few hours away from family life for both of us. The journey time was about 40 mins each way from where we live. When we arrived in reception, we had to wait for about 15 mins to be seen by a member of staff, even the workmen working there at the time asked if we were being attended to.Eventually we were seen by a female member of staff, who asked us to sit in the lounge area to the left off the corridor, we were not shown to the room, just asked to sit in the lounge, which one???We sat in this particular lounge, table had not been wiped, sticky marks and cup/glass ring marks on the table also. We looked at a menu whilst we were sat down, the menu was in a clear perspex stand and was filthy and sticky marks all over it. The afternoon tea came along with a pot of tea (dishwater), one of the cups & a teaspoon were dirty so had to be replaced. The sandwiches were dry and curled up at the edges and very much lack of filling - more like bread & butter, so they got left. The only items that were ok out of the selection of afternoon tea were the two scones. We never saw a member of staff again, the only one time was when we first arrived at the reception desk. Lack of present/visible staff was very poor as we could not order anymore drinks or mention about our disappointment, never again will we visit this establishment. This visit cost more in fuel than the food, extremely poor and visiting and leaving a place without seeing a member of staff is appalling. The place appears to be full of character, but no excuse for for not being clean!!!When looking to purchase one of these food deals on known websites, look on TripAdvisor first and make your own judgement.

I treated my 6 year old daughter to Afternoon Tea here. She was so very excited it was her first time having an AT so expectations were high. We arrived at the front desk to be ignored by a really unfriendly Receptionist who took a phone call rather than offering a smile and a simple "hello". After her call had finished she huffily asked if she could help- the irony. We were then told to go to the lounge area. It did improve from then on but the surly start from the bolshy receptionist didn't give the best impression. We were then served by a chap who couldn't do enough for us and was very pleasant. The food was nice and the tea was lovely. First impressions do last though and I wouldn't make another trip back here. Tip to the front of house - a nice greeting really does go a long way.

After the wedding ceremony, the guests flooded into the bar area and it became very cramped and uncomfortable so we left. Used a Living Social voucher to sample the afternoon tea with a glass of bubbly. The place itself has obviously been quite something in its prime but like many hotels of this era, needs a little tlc to bring it back to life. The fire in the drawing room wasn't lit & according to the waitress/receptionist, wasn't working. Shame as on a cold February afternoon, that would have been lovely ! We were shown through to the dining room with another couple & two very small fan heaters were doing their best to rake the chill off the room but struggled to do so.The tea & coffee arrived promptly - though no mention of the bubbly. The waitress then brought a plate of sandwiches & a plate of cakes/scones. A small tumbler of jam & a separate one of cream. A third couple arrived & were served the same on a proper cake tier which looked so much better - perhaps they only have one ! The sandwiches were pleasant enough - ham with cucumber, cheese with tomato relish & beef with English mustard although there was so much mustard on the beef it didn't taste of anything but mustard & one couple sent theirs back to be replaced without mustard !Fruit scones were ok as were the chocolate brownies & Bakewell tarts - none of which were homemade ! We asked about the bubbly which the waitress then brought but it would have been better at the start than the end ! Overall, it was a good value deal but probably wouldn't return, even on another deal as there are better ones available for the same price.

Booked a groupon for afternoon tea for my daughter’s birthday. The deal was for 4 people. My 2 daughters obviously weren’t going have tea or coffee and when the waitress declined a hot chocolate (which we had no issues with), she offered them a glass of water instead. Seeing as we’d paid for 4 people I think a glass of squash for them wasn’t really too much to offer. There were no sausage rolls/cheese wellingtons as stated on menu, so we were given lots and lots of finger sandwiches. Unfortunately they were all tasteless. We’d had nothing since breakfast and still they tasted so bland. The scones were so soft they were falling to pieces as we spread jam on them. The cakes weren’t at all inspiring. The macaroon was the only thing that was average. The room itself was so hot and made the meal even more uncomfortable. A thoroughly disappointing experience. I’m glad we booked a groupon for it but still found it a waste of money. A shame really as I was planning to return for the Sunday roast deal. The location is breathtaking but completely ruined by the lack of quality of the food.

Been visiting jodrell on and off as a cyclist for the last 5/6 years, from when the modern caterer was responsible for the cafe, sadly that came to and end a while ago and the university took back charge. The food seems to have been going downhill ever since. Todays (Sunday) breakfast offering consisted of sausage or bacon barms. Precooked and left to slowly cool in a pot, not kept warm or reheated, served on an unbuttered barmcake that was left to dry out in a paper bag. The whole thing soon disintegrated because it was dryer than Gandhi’s flip flop. And they have the cheek to charge £5 for it. On the (only) plus side the coffee is still decent. May be better in the week but today was embarrassing compared to how good it used to be.

Used to be quite good, but gone down the pan. Soup, now I can make better. Appearance and texture of cheap packet stuff. Chips, now how do you manage to serve hot chips and cold chips in the same serving? Poached salmon fillet; thin piece of tail end, over cooked and dry. Got to get your own cutlery, sort of like self service. Staff doing their best, but run off their feet. Really disappointing and dare I say it, overpriced 🫤
