The best restaurants serving British food in Elvet County Durham North East

We’re not vegans, merely vegetarians! However it was a lovely surprise to stumble across this stall whilst on a walk around Durham. Whilst not hungry at the time, we bought some pastries and a scotch egg for later, purely because it was nice to see a trader specialising in meat free (or in this case vegan) products and not someone making a token effort. All of of our food tasted awesome and we’ll definitely make a point of visiting here to try something else the next time we are in Durham.

Superb! The tasting menu was unbelievable value when one considers the quality of the ingredients and the hours that have gone into developing and preparing each dish. Every course was an adventure in flavour and texture, beautifully presented and well described by waiting staff. Hard to choose a stand-out dish - but the Pollock with Broccoli and Mussels and Trout tart with Beetroot and Chervil were amazing! The wine flight is well worth it: 5 glasses of quality wines beautifully matched to the food and superbly described by a knowledgable sommelier who clearly loves her job! Having eaten at 1 & 2 Michelin star restaurants around the world it's only a matter of time before Faru picks up at least one if not two stars: everything they do is top notch. Great food, lovely dining room with a view into the kitchen and staff who are clearly passionate about food and drink. Oh, and the Rhubarb & Custard cocktail - 'Rhubarb after 5'...... highly recommend and guaranteed to put a smile on one's face from the first sip! A wedding anniversary treat for us - thank you team Faru!!!

My wife and I visited the Hare and Hounds today after pre booking, which seems essential. We were not disappointed. It was the Best Sunday Roast we have had for years. Freshly cooked vegetables and a choice of beef lamb or pork very good portions of meat served to you then put your own veg and trimmings. All with the best gravy. Friendly staff and bee from onsite brewery. Strongly Recommend.

Lovely food, comfy chairs, big portions and decent prices at £24 for a very filling lunch for two. Would like to come back and try more from the menu. Only criticism so far is lack of proper baby changing facilities. I know space is an issue but all there is is a small, hard tiled counter.

Great pizza and pastries. Coffee is hit or miss but high recommend

The food portions were huge and the taste was good. There was no separate service tip so it wasn't burdensome, and the staff was friendly. I'm very satisfied. I recommend visiting here for fish and chips!!

Wonderful place, great staff , nothing too much. My son held wedding there. Highly recommend and food was great and plentiful. Great day had by all.

We had an excellent dinner for two. The menu choice was impressive. The food was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Service was polite and attentive. Highly recommended!

The food is not ok not impressed. The price is fine for what it is. The location is excellent, next to the river, the view is great. Sitting by the waterfront is so relaxing. The restaurant is upstairs, highly recommend sitting outside the balcony area if the weather is nice and sunny. The view is gorgeous.

20 minute wait for a cup of tea. Had to chase, was just given a crap excuse about being busy (they just forgot our order). Won’t bother next time.

Buscando un lugar para desayunar, miramos varios lugares de la ciudad. Durham tiene un montón de lugares hipster que sirven el mercado "Surrey Up North" para la tarifa. Pero queríamos algo más real y Northumberland! Así que lo intentamos aquí: no nos decepcionó. Un muy buen inglés completo, huevo, tocino, salchichas, frijoles, hongos, tostadas y té fresco. Pero no fue solo eso, fueron las sonrisas y la amabilidad el orgullo por su café lo que destacó. Nos sentimos relajados y bienvenidos. ¡Vamos a volver, seguro!

Fabulous little cafe based at the mining museum. A small but prefect menu with very reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Absolutely delicious food, well planned and beautifully executed. Fair prices and immaculate service. We had the Ox, and cheese soufflé for starters, chicken supreme and beef wellington for mains and chocolate fondant for dessert. You can mix and match between the al la carte menu and lunch menu during the day. We did not book and visited around 13:00 on a Friday August. Highly recommended, please give it a try.
