My wife and I visited the Hare and Hounds today after pre booking, which seems essential. We were not disappointed. It was the Best Sunday Roast we have had for years. Freshly cooked vegetables and a choice of beef lamb or pork very good portions of meat served to you then put your own veg and trimmings. All with the best gravy. Friendly staff and bee from onsite brewery. Strongly Recommend.

Ate here both on an evening and the following day for Sunday lunch. Food absolutely fantastic. On the evening we had the venison pie and sea bass fillets. The following day we went for the carvery which was sublime. Amazing prices for the food and the service was excellent. And very reasonable drink prices too. Highly recommended

Fabulous Sunday roast carvery. A selection of 4 different meats, a huge variety of vegetables with lovely meaty gravy. The best Sunday roast we’ve had out, for a very long time. Staff very friendly. Highly recommended, but ensure you book as it’s very popular!

Classic British Pub, with friendly visitors. The carvery is always amazing and extremely fair with the meat! Staff are friendly and welcoming to young customers. Although perfect I have a suggestion: I think a broader wine choice for wine enthusiasts.

This has to be the best place for Sunday lunch carvery in the Dale. Booking is essential! Everything is fresh, hot and as good or better than you do at home. Fabulous meats, Brian, who carves the meats has friendly banter and jolly sense of humour. The vegetables are al dente, huge Yorkshire puddings and lovely gravy. They also do takeaways. Highly recommend. Enjoy.

We came here last year for a Sunday lunch and were so impressed we came again for the first sitting. We all had beef and turkey which was lovely quality and served with a huge array of delicious vegetables. The potatoes and parsnips are roasted in lard which I don't eat so they did some especially for me in vegetable oil! They have Weardale Brewery ale here which was very pleasant and less than £4 a pint. Service is very efficient and friendly. You must book to be sure of a table as it can get very busy.

Visited this country pub for lunch. Booked for 1.30, second sitting of the day. Quite a long queue to wait in but the food was very nice. Home made Yorkshire puddings, very tasty gravy and fresh vegetables. Meats were beef, Turkey or pork, with a good variety of vegetables. All for only £10 each, which I have to say was surprising as the quality was good. Too full for dessert, but saw others ordering and they looked amazing, would recommend and would definitely return.

After reading a bad review from someone whose just moved to the village I felt I had to put the record straight. We go every Sunday for their delicious carvery and we're never disappointed. The food is lovely and the desserts are huge! The previous reviewer said there was a musty smell which I can say is definitely not the case. As for the unfriendly staff I cannot understand that comment at all! Take time and talk to the staff, you will be surprised that they are in fact very friendly! Colin the owner brews his own been on site and can say its definitely not watered down. I don't myself drink beer, but my partner and friends all do and tell me the beer is very nice. As I said, we are in every Sunday and always have a great day/night :) We meet our friends there, there's quite a few of us now and we always have a good laugh and a good drink. So come along and give it a try, you won't be disappointed. :)

Absolutely love this place. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere. Carvery on a Sunday is, in our opinion, the best in Co Durham. We have lived in the village for just over 3 years and find the village pub great. We have been made to feel very welcome. Have seen a very negative report on here from a new resident about pub not being open all week. Well ask yourself the question would you open a pub during the week when no-one goes in?? Or to have a couple of people come in and sit for an hour with one pint?? We have owned pubs and worked in the hospitality industry for a number of years and the answer is no you wouldnt. The pub does put on amazing themed nights but it's not the sort of village for karaoke. Maybe Rebecca S Westgate and the pub are not for you. Ali Colin and the staff do an amazing job and are much loved in the community. Highly recommend the Hare & Hounds for just drinks or food. Carolyn and John OHara

@Rebecca S. you’ve been here two mins. And as far as I am aware have visited the pub twice. If you came down more often you would have seen just how friendly our local is!! We have been here 5 years and have been made to feel welcome from the day we came to view our house which is now our home and have made friends for life. So before you start slating the place you chose to move to maybe make more of an effort. The pub might not be open all nights but it does have ladies and mens darts team. They do do themed nights. There was a Halloween night a few weeks ago and it was a brilliant night. When my grandkids come to stay they always want to go to the Hare and Hounds for tea. one of which is very shy but is like a different girl at the Hare and Hounds, she comes right out of her shell. As for a stale and musty smell, that is the biggest load of rubbish ever and also slander. As is you’re statement about their largers/beer. My husband being an ex rugby player/fan is a big larger and beer drinker and has never had a bad pint yet so yet again more slander!!! But if that’s how you see it I do remember there were a few houses in Eastgate up for sale/rent if you prefer to be closer to the the pub you prefer to drink in.

My first thought this morning was to the lovely taste combination that came with my meal last night. I chose a lamb dish with butter beans and feta cheese. Superb. The menu at the Hare and Hounds is full of interesting and delicious surprises. Certainly a step up from a typical pub grub menu. My husband went with the trout, huge, locally sourced and cooked with care and attention. Both meals came with generous potions of fresh vegetables. We were both too full for pudding but stayed around for the chat and the variety of Weard'ale that is brewed in house. A real treat. The pubs opening hours are a reflection of current economic times but they are definitely there to provide good food, ale and hospitality over the weekend. Thursday's for drinks, Friday and Saturday for evening meals and Sunday lunchtime for the ever popular carvery.

It’s such a shame that this little country pub only opens when it feels like it for a start. Upon entering we were greeted with a stale musty smell and not so friendly faces.. ordered 2 pints and decided to sit outside as the atmosphere was just awful. Pints tasted foisty and as if they’d been watered down; which I doubt is true but as regular drinkers of lager we noticed they weren’t very nice. My partner actually tipped his out which is very unlike him. We live extremely close to this venue, and it’s such a shame it only opens 2/3 days a week and for only a few hours. We have to travel to Eastgate when we fancy a drink but means one of us cannot as we have to drive. It would be so good if they freshened the place up, had more friendly staff manning the bar, and opened daily. Maybe have karaoke nights and quizzes and Halloween/Christmas/Easter parties or such. Something to get people involved in. We haven’t lived in Westgate long, but a place to meet people and socialise would be great. Very disappointed, but hopeful that the owners can turn it around as it has so much potential.

We love traveling up Weardale and I was looking for a pub to bring my in-laws for Sunday lunch. We looked at various places nearer Durham but this place stood out on TA due to the number of great reviews so we booked the day before and drove 40 minutes to get here. This place is in the beautiful small village of Westgate. It is very much a traditional local pub frequented by local people and it feels like part of the community. The pub does 2 sittings, we came for about 1.10 and it was fairly empty. It was suggested that we order our carvery straight away and we did and by 1.30 there was a huge queue. We had a mixture of beef and turkey which were beautifully cooked with a huge choice of perfectly cooked - not overcooked, vegetables. The roast potatoes and parsnips are cooked in lard (I've never come across this before) so my wife and I who don't eat pork were given the option of having these cooked in vegetable oil which was a very nice touch. We had a few drinks including a couple of tasty local Weardale beers. To be honest I didn't ask how much the carvery was and I assumed it would be around £15. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got the bill and it was just £10! Plus a pint of local real ale was £3! My Father in law said it was the best Sunday lunch he had had for a very long time which was great but slightly annoying at the same time as I had taken him to a posh restaurant for lunch the previous Sunday.

It's important to emphasize that The Hare & Hounds Sunday carvery runs pretty much like clock-work, and has lovely food on offer, but the actual dining experience is somewhat strange. We were only travelling from St John's Chapel, which is a little further along Weardale, so we timed our arrival as close to midday as we could manage, having booked their first sitting at 12 noon. We fortunately got one of the last (dedicated) car park spaces, but arrived to find everyone still sat in their cars. As it was raining, we deduced that "...doors open..." was clearly timed for midday, so as the minutes ticked down, you could feel the tension in the air. Finally, when one car door started to open, there was a sudden mass evacuation and everyone started heading for the front door. Once inside, you all head for the bar, get some drinks, and discover your allocated table number (so booking is essential) and then jockey with other diners to form the type of queue, last seen in Jarrow. As already stated, you cannot fault the efficiency of the staff which carve the meat and keep the potatoes + veggie bowls constantly filled for you to help yourself from, but it's very much like being in a work's canteen. If Victoria Wood's "Dinner Ladies" had suddenly popped up, no-one would have turned a hair.Having then sat down, it was hard to ignore that we were all tucking in to exactly the same meal, on identical tables, and until all the tables were filled, you had a constant stream of people passing each side of you whilst you ate. Some people didn't even take their coats off ! And then.....they were all leaving, en mass, particularly if thy weren't hanging around for a sweet, which after we enquired, was actually a waitress service. We did stay for dessert, which was equally as good, but since you're eating to a deadline you can't linger, as the 2nd seating at 1:30pm has to be accommodated. So in conclusion, the food's good but the dining experience isn't. Reluctantly, we wouldn't do a Sunday lunchtime again, but we do plan to try them again on a weekday.

Came here from Alston as there are limited pubs in the area with a decent menu but this was one of them. In the end, we were disappointed with the food. I ordered chicken in mushroom and brandy sauce. The chicken breast was dry and the brandy in the sauce hadn't been cooked off so the sauce just tasted like a creamy alcoholic concoction which was quite unpleasant. Value is OK but truthfully recommend somewhere else for good grub. Perhaps just come here for your pint.

Staying in the village on holiday, decided to risk the pub for our first evening meal... well, what more can I say: this is what pubs should be like. Great meal, great beer, and a real traditional feel (no fake Wetherspoon here). The staff were nice and friendly without making you feel uncomfortable, and locals too for that matter. Amongst the four of us we had traditional pub fare (scampi, hunter’s chicken), something from the specials (rabbit in white wine sauce) and a steak - each excellent and just what was wanted. Good portions and freshly prepared I’d say. Then there was the beer - fresh and distinctive, and at £2 a pint I’m sure there was a mistake! Reckon it’d be a busy but welcome place on a Friday night too.

Enjoyed a wonderful Sunday dinner with the family, couldn't fault it. At this time of year when lots of people are visiting the area, it is advisable to book to avoid disappointment, as it was very busy when I arrived just after 12. The meat (we only had the lamb and the beef) was cooked to perfection and the there was a wide range of vege to choose from. All us left clean plates and would have glady went back for more had we not decided to the try the deserts. The apple and blackcurrant crumble, which was a very hearty portion, went down very well with the kids.

35 of us went to The Hare and hounds on a CAMRA coach trip and it was more than worth a visit. Cosy old fashioned bar serving top class Real Ale's brewed in the micro brewery downstairs. The "Dark Knight" was nectar in a glass. We had a wonderful carvery lunch served in the dinning room and the beer garden overlooked a babbling brook. A very pleasant afternoon was had by all. I would definatley be paying a second visit.

We stayed nearby and walked to this pub.On our arrival were greeted with a wonderful warmth. The drinks (especially the homemade ale made in the basement) and food was outstanding...some of the best pub grub we'd had in the UK over 3 weeks. An outstanding establishment with great staff....a must do if in the area

This has to be one of the best pubs in the UK, friendly service, well brewed ale and gorgeous home cooking. The situation of this pub alone makes it worth a visit, sitting next to a post card perfect bridge that the river Wear lazily flows below. However when you get into the pub it's traditional interior and welcoming feel makes you feel instantly at home. The food mid week is beautiful, but the Sunday roast is the real winner and needs to be booked as its popularity normally inhibits just turning up.

This was outstanding - from home cooked veg, boiled potatoes and chips to unexpected cheesey baked potatoes, and sides of coleslaw, mushroom, tomatoes, onion rings as well as steak , lamb and burger - every component of this family meal was cooked to perfection and in abundant portions. My husband and I love cooking - so often when we go out to eat we feel a little cheated ,,.we know we would have eaten better at home...... but this was certainly not the case here - Well worth a visit and at less than £14 per head - including 3 alcoholic and 4 soft drinks- offered really good value for money. Would love to think we could return one day,

WE stopped for a couple of pints and pasty on a hike up the dale. It was warm and sunny so we sat outside and had an enjoyable lunch. The pub was small and cosy and nice and clean and the landlady was welcoming. From the photos on the wall it had been used as a location for filming All Creatures Great and Small and deservedly so as it has bags of character.

We visited the Hare & Hounds on 3 occasions last Bank Holiday weekend, we stopped in for a drink on the Friday night and booked a meal for the Saturday night, we also booked for the Sunday carvery as this was highly recommended. The pub is set in the middle of the village and it's your typical village pub, with a mix of locals and holiday makers from the nearby caravan park. On the Friday night we were made very welcome by the landlord (Colin) and his staff, we tried a few of the real ales on the bar, which are brewed by the landlord onsite. On the Saturday evening we ate in the bar area, a very extensive menu and very reasonably priced. The bar was very busy so they took our order and called us when our food was ready, after a short wait we were seated and our starters were delivered, the starters look amazing and tasted excellent, large portions so think twice before ordering starters if you are not a big eater as you could struggle with your main course. For the main course I ordered surf and turf, a sirloin steak with a full portion of scampi, this came with onion rings, mushrooms, tomato and sides of chips, veg and dauphinoise potatoes, this is why you need to think twice about ordering starters. Once again excellent food served by a friendly waiter and waitress. We retired to the bar after eating and sampled a few of the landlords beers, can I just say you must try the Wolf ask Colin the landlord he will keep you right. On Sunday we ventured out at lunchtime for the carvery, the choices of meats on the carvery were Pork, Lamb, Beef & Turkey, there was also a veggie option but not for me, I had Pork & Turkey, the meats are served to you by Charlie a very friendly local, and you help yourself to the vegetables, once again excellent food and I would highly recommend the carvery so book in advance. All in, the Hare & Hounds is a very nice village pub with excellent staff, serving excellent beers and food very reasonably priced in a very nice setting. Already looking forward to our next visit.

This is a fantastic pub surrounded by beautiful countryside. I've been here a few times for their Sunday carvery, I've got to say it's the best Sunday dinner you can get other than at home. There are no frozen meals here, everything is cooked as it should be. They also brew their own beer here, I'm not much of a beer drinker but I'm told they are very good. I'd advise booking a table as they are usually busy.

Fantastic food, good portions and very reasonably priced. All vegetables were fresh. At least 3 choices of dishes for lamb, chicken and fish. Steaks available. Would highly recommend the black pudding with bacon as a starter. Plenty of seating available, excellent guest beers/cider and a warm welcome for both couples and families. Service was excellent.

Lovely bakers and coffee shop, Lattes were really good and the gluten free carrot cake was amazing. When you have coeliac you can’t always find somewhere that provides gluten free especially in small villages but I would definitely recommend Peggotty’s! We’ll be back.
