Cafe Cenno in County Durham

Brilliant service, great menu and decent prices. Staff are lovely and it's very clean. It's a great hidden gem in Durham that I didn't even know was there. Went with my disabled mam, we found the market by pure chance. In a search for food we decided to try Cafe Cenno and its a choice I do not regret at all. We both had kids meals and they were delicious. The chips are huge and crispy and the chicken nuggets are succulent and tender. She enjoyed her cappuccino and I thoroughly enjoyed my fruit shoots which are free with the kids meals. We managed to get into the cafe ok, the lift was very helpful, and we managed to pull in with the wheelchair to sit at our table. The area was clean and it has a lovely few of the marker place with a wee train der on top.

OK place and worth a visit for a simple lunch.

Why contribute to a national chain when you can come to cafe cenno in Durham Market. Here you get first class food at a reasonable price AND support the local economy, surely a no brainer!

I love it when indoor markets have a cafe because you can always guarantee delicious well-cooked food. This proved to be the case today when we visited the bustling Cafe Cenno in Durham Market Hall. The cafe is on a mezzanine floor so you look out across the top of the market stalls. It has a lot of seating but was very busy so we were lucky to get a table. We went in for lunch, my husband having steak pie, peas and gravy whilst I opted for the light option roast dinner with beef. The food was delicious: beef so tender with lovely gravy and the best mash you could imagine. We managed to share a Mars bar slice as all of the other cakes and desserts were enormous! Proper Yorkshire tea made the meal complete. If you are looking for good quality home cooking, well prepared and generous portions this is a must visit. It is very rare that we visit Durham but this will definitely be on our list of great places to eat.

Not bad 2 x 8 item all day (£795 each) breakfast OK but the tined tomatoes were a no no i like fresh tomatoes and the fish & chips looked nice the place was pretty busy

If I could give 0 stars I would, especially for the service. Decided to try this place today, when ordering I asked for no Mushy peas with my corned beef pie and chips, my daughter asked for peas and our friend asked for a jacket potato with cheese. When our food arrived I had mushy peas on my plate, my daughter had no peas and our friend was brought a jacket potato with Tuna… they made a new jacket potato and brought out my daughter some peas, however when it came to mine they refused to do anything about it. Fair enough if it was normal peas but it wasn’t. All of the other parts of the meal were submerged in mushy peas 🤢 when I complained I was just told “there’s no corned beef pie left” didn’t offer something else for there mistake, didn’t even offer a refund, tbh she was so rude and I wish I knew her name. Will not be coming here in the future and I think you need to train your staff on hospitality and work on the communication within your workplace because the service was just shocking. I wouldn’t even treat someone like that when I’m off work, let alone when I’m at work and someone is paying for my service!!!

Beautiful views of the Durham market from this 1st floor restaurant. Quite busy and cheerful on the weekends.

We had a ham salad sandwich that was really fresh, and pancakes that were nothing like my own pathetic efforts but thick and fluffy. Everything was delicious and the staff were very friendly. 😊

Lovely staff and the food is fab. Big portions though, however I have noticed there is an option for a light bite.

Wonderful cafe, excellent choice of food. Had the full English breakfast, was great, served hot and just the right portion size. Customer service is great and the place is kept very clean and tidy.

Used to always come here. It used to be the best in Durham. Service is very slow now. I don't know if its changed hands. Sad to see this. 25 minutes to wait for a chip butty. I refused it. I won't be returning here or recommending it to anyone

Needed a spot to wait it out until my appointment at the passport office - found this place which is about 5 minutes walk away - seems to be lots of selection for food (I wasnt eating ) and the meals I did see folks getting were well worth the money being charged. I asked for a pot of tea for one - costing £2.50, well..... The pot was easily big enough for 4 people having 1 cup each......pleasantly surprised at the value. Service was 2nd to none, so if you find yourself in Durham for any reason, drop into the Market Vaults for a browse, lots of variety and while your there grab a bite to eat or a drink or both from Cafe Cenno

Cracking full English breakfast, bacon, sausage, egg, beans, tinned tomatoes, black pudding, fried bread or toast. Good price too and nice location in the indoor market. Highly recommended if you fancy a good full English.

Excellent little cafe. We had breakfast. The prices are higher than we normally pay for breakfast food. But you can see why you pay more here. The food is top quality produce. Very tasty. Would highly recommend.

Great cafe in the market. Lots of choice and the ladies serving were really nice. It is extremely hot in there as the roof is all glass so you wouldn't want to be there too long in summer.

The best part of this cafe was it overlooked the market. Ordered 3 drinks and two ice cream tubs. The ice cream had at most two plastic spoon sized bites inside. Two chocolate milkshakes with 0 flavour. On the bright side my fathers tea was given a "it's okie I guess"

Lovely food (fish and chips). Great location in the covered market in the centre of Durham. Counter service was a bit slow when queuing to place our order (Thursday lunchtime) but otherwise enjoyable meal with friends.

Staff are friendly and helpful. Will help you carry your tray to your table if you have trouble walking. Any food orders are delivered to your table.

Makes for an interesting spot to have drink as it's within and overlooking the Durham Market hall. I enjoyed my Fruit Scone and Tea. It's not the cleanest and I thought I was lightly put out that it looked like there was loads of space overlooking the market but they had closed that section.

Abit steep on prices for what it is, it was nice to sit above the market and look down and see the toy train, food was nothing special.

Just popped in to look around the market and saw the cafe, so went upstairs to try. Seems very popular. The staff were very friendly. Nice vibe and view. Certainly worth a visit.

It was very cold the day we visited, I don't think the hearing was working, we had to keep our coats on, we had bacon/sausage buns, they were basic, the pies and quiches looked delicious though!

Nice big menu of sensible food options. Homemade pies, sandwiches, salads, jacket spuds and lots of other lovely things. Selection of teas and coffees as well as soft drinks. I asked for the salmon salad and they went off to buy the salmon from the market downstairs. Now you can't get fresher than that! Good cafe.

Great local cafe in the center of the market.

Stopped for a mid morning cuppa. Lots of space and tables. All that we had was fine. The scone was home made and fresh that morning. As the time passed the place filled with more people and the cafe had a steady flow of customers.

Staff have a lovely vibe amongst themselves. Service quite slow probably understaffed or not utilising existing staff more effectively...

A nice cafe. Clean, the staff are friendly and a good range of tasty noms. There's even a model railway to look at as you eat.

Sat down, asked for a few cold sandwiches for the kids and told there would be over an hour wait... For an cold Sandwich? So we left. Perfectly polite staff, and the place seems to have a good buzz...and I understand it was a busy Saturday, but really the place could work on their prioritisation.

Lovely cafe overlooking the market. Super salads. Great portions. Lovely train set to watch complete with Thomas the Tank Engine and James the Red Engine.

Second time eating here with family. Clean,airy and bustling. Had 15 min wait for fresh food which was simple,hot and tasty. Decent portions and reasonable price. Pleasant atmosphere. A good market and toilets on same floor. What's not to like.

All in all it was a nice experience, could have done without the chipped spout on the teapot, but as we agreed, it's not as if we had to drink out of it, less happy with the dirty tray, not exactly hygienic and easy enough to wipe clean between uses.

Used to be a lovely place for breakfast, visited today and breakfast was swimming in grease, and eggs and mushrooms deep fried.

No basked potatoes, even though one was on display. The advertised soup of the day was no longer available. Couldn't make a ham and cheese panini, but could do a ham and cheese toastie!? Asked for a hot chicken sandwich on brown as my wife is allergic to white bread - cones on white bread so had to send back! Lady who served us was very distracted about what was going on around her.
