It was a date night with my wife and I wanted to fine dine yet be local to us. South Croydon is as local as can be. Crystal Restaurant under Hussain fulfilled and tick boxed. Starter of Baba Ganoush, my Sea Bass main, the grilled Chicken, and then the Saffron infused sugar Mint tea. Perfect. Thank you so very much for a lovely service.

los cortes de carne son muy buenos, super tiernos como mantequilla, además estaba cocido en el punto justo.

Best fish & chips I have ever had. Good price and fantastic service. They have perfect chippy chips. Got that crunchy but chewy thing going on with the outside. Hand cut good quality potatoes. Perfect fish too! Very fresh. Big juicy flakes with crunchy non greasy batter. Lovely owner who can tell you everything you want to know about your meal. Worth the visit. I’ll be revisiting.

Food is great, meat is super delicious. However, the atmosphere is cheap and loud. You get seated at a massive communal table. This would be great for an informal get together. However, this place is priced expensive like a top tier restaurant. In this case, the standard required in terms of service, seating and ambience must be signficantly higher… you cant seat someone at a communal table and charge them £300+ for a meal.

Came in for a Sunday roast with our 2 year old son. This was our fourth or fifth visit. Great service from the maitre d’ as always. Food arrived very quickly, which was welcome with a child of this age who doesn’t sit still for long! Food cooked perfectly, huge yorkie, great selection of sides and an excellent cut of beef fillet. Plus great deserts in the Kahlua dom pedro & choc mint martini.

Fell in love with this place when it was nestled in the equestrian center just off Lullington Garth. As we understood at the time, it was owned and operated by Argentinians. The beef - as you would expect - was incredible. Not just cooked one way, or one cut; there was a variety with a distinct 'this is how we do it back home' feel. There was chicken too, but the cuts of pork and different types of pork sausage is what had us telling our friends about El Vaquero. The sides looked and tasted homemade; the beans were a regional recipe from where the owners were originally from. The (Argentinian) passadors were engaging too which added a real South American feel to the whole experience. Sadly, it all ended when EV shut down. However, much to our delight, there would be a new location; a High Street location. We booked as soon as we could which coincided with my birthday. Upon arrival in Whetstone, we saw a great location, nice building but not quite the same atmosphere as it was back in Woodside Park. The biggest disappointment for me was that there were no sausages (well, not of the pork kind) no pork loin, or any kind of pork for that matter. When I asked, one of the waiters intimated that the new owners did not include pork on the menu (for religious reasons). This wasn't a problem, but there was no indication of this at any stage until we asked when the sausages would be coming. Broadly speaking, it's the same concept as the original El Vaquero, a 'meat fest' only no pork or pork products. EDIT: My friends and I visited the original restaurant in Woodside Park on more than one occasion. We were served pork there: loin, sausages and ribs. Pork was taken off the menu when the new owners took over and moved the brand to Whetstone.

A great night out with family and friends, never heard of this place but OMG what a place. The food is just unreal cooked to perfection on all dishes served. The outstanding ox cheeks and chicken wings as starters along with peppers. Mains were pulled pork and beef buns, the beef was my favourite. The meat platter was out of this world juiciness in the mouth, brisket, beef rib, pork belly and pulled pork simply fantastic. Chips with skins on, kale and an aubergine side. How we managed desert: plum pudding, ice cream and caramel pudding I don’t know. The staff and manager are super attentive, layed back and eager to please. Highly recommend look forward to coming back ….

As a 3 star restaurant in a hotel as distinguished as the Connaught, you can of course expect exceptional food, wine and service. With that comes an exceptional price tag, and this is true of all the 3-star restaurants in the UK. And with so much competition just in London alone, it is the finer detail and service which can set a restaurant apart from all the others. The food was out of this world, and I say this as someone who has been very fortunate to eat at the majority of the 3 star Michelins in the UK - Helene Darroze is at the top of this list. The guinea fowl and the lobster were stand outs for me, but really every course was superb. If you’re a wine enthusiast or appreciate wine pairings, we opted for the ultimate wine experience and have no regrets. The thing about wine pairings is everyone is doing them nowadays and they can be substandard and uninspiring, and given that they’re usually hundreds of pounds it can be a great disappointment when not done right. However, the experience at Helene Darroze was second to none and complimented each course perfectly. The 2015 Chateaux d’Yquem was a stand out for me. There are two other cheaper wine pairing options available. And finally, the service. The team here are the gold standard of hospitality. Kind and thoughtful, friendly and welcoming. We were treated to a tour of the kitchen, the chefs just as smiley and friendly despite being incredibly busy and focused. I made some remarks about the tweezers the chefs use to apply finishing touches, and the next day I had an envelope in my room with a hand written note and some chefs tweezers as a gift. It’s this human and personal touch that makes memories that last a lifetime, so thank you to Lelia the guest services manager who thought to do this, because it was so appreciated. I can’t recommend Helene Darroze enough and especially if you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion.
