Locals on a walk looking for a cuppa If I was to sum up our visit today in one word it would be…. Ansum ( Devon for lovey or proper job for those who are not from these parts. ) Excellent cheese scone, dog friendly, spotlessly clean and happy staff. We will be back.

We celebrated our daughter's 5th birthday party today at Amazing Grazing. It was incredible- marquee set up with tables; smaller marquee with tuff trays of games; whole paddock with tonnes of activities from building to tyre rolling to a miniature flower shop; goat, pig and alpaca supervised feeding. Superb from start to finish. Fantastic value for money and Taro was so helpful right from booking to the day itself making sure it was the best experience for our little girl and her friends.

We returned here for the umpteenth year running for the first night of our holiday and will continue to do so as it doesn't disappoint. Our family group now includes two infants under 2, but this doesn't faze the staff who made all of us welcome as always. The Old Alley Restaurant is ideal for families/groups, being spacious and with easy access to facilities. All the meals were greatly enjoyed, as was the draft beer. They also make a great Irish coffee.

Had the fish and chips and it was awful there was more skin and batter than there was fish, and the chips were like they were re-heated from earlier 😡

Four of us made the mistake of booking Sunday lunch at The Redwing Inn. We understood that the Inn is under new ownership and still “transitioning” – in preparation for “relaunching” later in the year. So we were prepared for some disruption – but not for chaos. It started with the wine. No, we couldn’t see their wine list – they didn’t have one. But the waitress said she could tell us what they had. Only, she couldn’t. She went off to check and returned with a scrap of paper with a few wines listed she could read out to us. We picked one, but she had to go off again to check the price. Problems continued with the menu. The main course offerings were beef, turkey or pork – all with Sunday roast trimmings. But nothing else. No fish alternative and no vegetarian option. The waitress – one of the young, personable but clueless staff (not their fault they needed training) – explained that they would have had a vegetarian offering, but their supplier of it had let them down. But, they could substitute extra vegetables for the meat. Two of our party chose the beef. Two of us were slightly luckier in choosing turkey. Four plates arrived quite promptly – with everything piled onto them. No serving dishes to enable us to select what trimmings we wanted – just a plateful each of mushy cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, watery green beans, baked potatoes, a whole carrot, a parsnip, a Yorkshire pudding and a rock-solid ball of stuffing. Two plate-loads topped off with thick wedges of beef and two with equally thick slices of turkey. All swimming in the same flavoured gravy. The turkey was just about edible for a bird of its age – the beef was as tough as the sole of a hiking boot. The request for horseradish sauce resulted in a fruitless search through all their fridges and cupboards. They did, though, eventually manage to find the jar of cranberry sauce. Clearing the plates, the waitress was careful not to ask if everything had been okay – studiously ignoring the pile of hacked at beef left on two of them. With hindsight, our mistake was in not walking out when we saw the menu or, failing that, when the food arrived. Fortunately, we will never have to return to The Redwing. The reality is that the new owners had no business opening the restaurant before it was ready to offer a proper service. With that attitude of mind, they deserve to have no business.

This hotel sells itself as charming and old-world. It's actually drab and dismal. My room was like a student hostel but worse, because nothing worked. The shower was broken, with missing bits that made it hard to use. The top of the cold tap in the basin was missing. The wifi didn't work. The radiator didn't work. Fixed to the wall was an unworking, broken hairdrier. Also fixed to the wall, and hanging down by its flex, was the abandoned hotplate for an electric kettle, minus the kettle. Breakfast was poor and mean (the hotel had clearly put much thought into how it could provide as a little as possible for the price - which was extra to the room charge). And the final straw was the morning I left. Arrangements had been made for a late checkout at 1pm (which cost more). I went out, returning at 12.15pm to find all my things had been removed from the room. The hotel has since agreed to refund the cost of my stay to the Exeter-based festival that was paying for it. But this doesn't take away from the fact that the place is a miserable dump. And the festival tells me it will never use the White Hart again.

Very quiet Wednesday night ruined for them by 13 drunk blokes. In fairness we did sort of behave and the landlady looked after us really well

After reading some brilliant reviews on The Swan, we decided to visit. Staying not too far away, we had passed on various occasions and noticed its popularity. We reserved a table. We were met by a friendly man, who showed us to our table. The decor and atmosphere was lovely. However we were all very disappointed with all of the three main meals we ordered. The lasagne was dry, average and hard. The sausage and mash was below average, with runny gravy and poor quality sausage meat. The chili beef was low quality and not at all nice, very sweet and we were unsure whether the ingredients were fresh. Not to mention the soft drinks being flat. Clearly the draught needed changing. For the price a very very disappointing meal. We will not be visiting again. A real shame. We had left this restaurant to the last as we wanted to have a lovely meal before our 5 hour trip home.

Cheap ingredients, bland and well overpriced. What the hell happened to the old style pizzas with the decent bacon etc? Bloody awful. I never had a problem with you guys for many many years. Always ordered from you every since I was young. Even my parents ordered from you. I will not be ordering from you again!
