We returned here for the umpteenth year running for the first night of our holiday and will continue to do so as it doesn't disappoint. Our family group now includes two infants under 2, but this doesn't faze the staff who made all of us welcome as always. The Old Alley Restaurant is ideal for families/groups, being spacious and with easy access to facilities. All the meals were greatly enjoyed, as was the draft beer. They also make a great Irish coffee.

Another fabulous meal at the Malsters. We were all very happy with our choices. My bread & butter pudding was delicious. Lovely welcoming staff who really look after you. The young man who served us most of the evening was exceptional considering he had been up since 3am this morning.

We visited as a table of 9 (two families) for mother's day today. From the very start by email the staff and owners were super caring and attentive. They were quick to accommodate even with a vegetarian and a pescatarian amongst us. The menu floral & beautifully presented matching the occasion perfectly. The choice of food absolutely stunning and just so delicious. A great price, amazing service and a place we’ll return to often now. Thank you so much for providing great food and experience on this special day. x

Lovely evening meal. Had the pork belly which was cooked to perfection and very tasty. My partner had fish and chips, the fish tasted very fresh, with a lovely homemade tartar sauce. Creme brûlée’s to finish all accompanied by a lovely glass of Sauvignon blanc. Clearly a popular restaurant. We both really enjoyed our meals. The service was also excellent. Even better was the January deal. Highly recommended

This was our second visit. Very disappointing. Last time every thing was wonderful, couldn't fault it. Tonight food just about average and the room cold..... very inadequate heating. I'm very sad that I couldn't recommend dinner here based on this evenings visit. I don't know if I'll ever return.

It's so nice to be able to write a very positive review. My husband and I had dinner here on a Thursday evening. We both had the venison which was perfectly cooked. It was served very attractively with a good mix of interesting vegatables. A sauce made with blackberries, complemented the whole dish. To follow we had the Raspberry Cheese cake and a creme brulee. Everything was excelent. There was only one waitress, she was friendly and efficient. She also had a lovely smile. The unseen magicians in the kitchen are not forgotten, thank you all. As we live in Sidmouth we will be back again soon.

Visited the Maltsters for the first time since they have reorganised the pub. I have to say I really like what they have done to the place creating a sports bar / pub section and a restaurant section. We had a lovely meal that we could not fault - my belly pork was delicious and came with a lovely selection of vegetables. Deserts were wonderful. As we are local to the pub we will definitely return

Visited again to celebrate an award we achieved for our business. The Aberdeen Angus steak melted, the burgers were divine, the service was quick & unobtrusive, friendly, the welcome grand & then to meet chef Jason afterwards was a real honour. His creations are unique and amazing, so much are evident in preparation, presentation and taste, highly commended cuisine, the sweets were also outstanding. Once more we enjoy the Maltsters Arms and once again it scores exceptionally high on our ratings - thank you.

The haddock we ordered tonight was fresh ….. well if it was it had clearly been out in the heat, fresh fish should not smell so fishy! The whole restaurant smelt of a very strong fish smell. I bought it to the staffs attention who mentioned it to the chef the response was Haddock does smell?!?! Our bill was £158.00 I was disappointed to see the returned “off”fish was still on the bill. It is a shame as the rest of the meal was ok? I truly believe the uneaten food shouldn’t be charge for. You have let yourselves down, customer services and customer satisfaction is key. 😳

My husband & I booked a table two days ago for dinner at the Maltsters Arms. Its a nice homely pub with wonderful old style decor. The service from the staff was excellent as was the food. We booked a late slot so some of the items on the menu were not available. I had a steak burger with all the trimmings including coleslaw & chips. It was delicious. My husband had cod wrapped in bacon (if I remember correctly) which he said was nice. The pub adhered to Covid rules regarding table placing. We stayed at Woodbury park hotel and the pub was only a short distance away which made it so convenient & a good choice especially at night.

This has always been a popular and reliably good pub with good food, and since the COVID lockdowns it has undergone some significant changes. The front area is now much more of a 'pub' with pool table and dart board to encourage the local teams, and seating to create a friendly feel. The previously less used back room is now a lovely restaurant with doors opening out onto the garden and outdoor seating area.Well spaced tables offer comfortable dining, and the menu, whilst not the cheapest in the area, offers a good range of locally sought produce. The staff were helpful and cheery and service was at a relaxed, but appropriate pace.

Heard great things about the food so thought we would give it a go.The food was absolutely beautiful and so tasty. A very varied choice! My mum had the special which was chicken fillet with a tarragon sauce.Dad had gammon steak which was presented well with some home made onion rings & pineapple. My partner had fish & chips and he said the batter was beautiful but would have liked some tartar sauce.I had the burger which was delicious, it would have been tastier with some relish or perhaps putting some sachets on the table would have been a solution as we had eaten half our meals by the time the sauces we requested arrived. The food is value for money but felt a little forgotten about in the corner, mum would have another glass of wine as it was empty before the meals arrived but no one asked. We had coffee after dessert (fully recommend the cheesecake) but the coffee was very strong even in my terms. Can’t recommend the food enough, it was the bonus of the whole experience. It was quite busy when we were there and only 2 servers. The food is worth the wait

There was plenty of parking available at 7.20pm when we arrived and the Covid arrangements were absolutely clear and sensible with a number of hand sanitising stations made available. The staff were very friendly and knowledge and the level of attention we received was perfect. We chose from the Christmas menu and had seared scallops on a bed of white haricot beans and chorizo followed by roast pigeon breasts with bacon on a potato rosti and red cabbage. The food was delivered promptly and was excellent. The wine was good and coffees were good and hot when they arrived. This was an excellent dinner with excellent customer service.

I was recommended two pubs/restaurants in the area and tried both and this pub/restaurant was by far the better one. Excellent environment, friendly service, great menu choices, however please note that during the current Covid situation the menu they have on the website is not the menu they have in the restaurant, even so there is only a couple of things not being served and these are from the starters selection. We attended The Maltsters for a family birthday meal. All was well, until the food arrived. Starters were nice but a little overpriced, and two of three scollops on one plate were gritty. Never mind. Then main courses arrived. Both pigeon breast dishes were overcooked and tough as mutton. We complained that they were tough, to the point of being difficult to cut, and were subsequently offered STEAK KNIVES. A pigeon breast cooked correctly does not require a chainsaw to cut. These were only fit for the dog bowl. We were rudely told that ‘none of our other customers have complained’. Not sure where the chefs learned their trade, but what a way to ruin a lovely piece of meat. In the end our pigeon was replaced (not overcooked) but only after an exchange that quite frankly left me without much of an appetite. Come the end of the meal, we sought a discount on account of the issues, and were met with a rude, confrontational and petulant attitude from the landlady. Will not be returning.Ever.

What a breath of fresh air it is to eat at this establishment. It certainly makes a change to go out for a family meal and have nothing but praise for every part of it. The menu was superb, in fact the only difficulty was choosing what to have as it all sounded lovely. I like attention to detail and every dish had that; hot plates, well presented, imaginative food with great selection of vegetables. I think even the most fussy of palettes would find something to suit them! Matt & Sam are minehosts and are quite obviously experienced in what they do. They effortlessly run a busy locals bar but equally manage the visitors that have managed to find this little gem. Praise also goes to our waitress who was also superb, attentive and well informed (a testament to good management) All in all, I highly recommend you visit and see for yourself. I must also add that Matt keeps an exceedingly good cellar and all real ales are served perfectly.

A delicious meal tonight for our annual presentation of awards. A room to ourselves for the evening and everything came out just as had been ordered.

I was optimistic about this place as there were so many good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. The service was efficient and really friendly and the food was super. It was interesting without being pretentious. Definitely worth a return visit.

Always a very warm welcome at our local. Real fire, good choice of beer and cider as well as a reasonably priced wine list.

Four of us, each had a different meal and we couldn’t fault any of it, all freshly cooked and delicious. The puddings were gorgeous. Staff were very friendly and we will come back if in the area. Thank you Malsters Arms, great meal to end our short break in the area.

The menu offers a vast range of food with an added twist. You can tell that the food is made with love. Compliments to the chefs that worked hard to produce my delicious meal. I would definitely recommend the pork belly.

I went out for a nice family meal (6 in total) and we all really enjoyed ourselves. Everyone ordered something different of the menu and I must say they do have a good selection plus the specials. All our food was served piping hot and the presentation was really nice I'd defiantly recommend this place to anyone. The Head Chef even popped out to check on us which was a nice touch (my daughter is doing catering at colleague and this Chef is well known in the catering world so I'm told). The main courses were so good we all decided to have a dessert and again couldn't fault them. Drinks were served quickly and we were kept topped up during out visit. Looking forward to returning for my works Christmas meal in a few weeks.

Popped in for a drink with my husband on Sunday afternoon, planning on eating however put off immediately by the dregs of wine served. The taste was similar to a two pence piece. This I can forgive. However when I asked to change my beverage and swap for another type of wine I was recharged full price. So consequently paying £9 for a subpar medium glass of wine. Once resat down the landlady shouted across the pub from the bar ‘guess you don’t want this??’. She then proceeded to smirk as she threw the wine down the sink. All in all an atrocious experience, served by an obnoxious individual. If this is how the owners act - god help the future of this pub.

What a surprise. One of our closest pubs and the best meal that we have eaten out locally for ages, and for some unknown reason we had never been. Buzzing when we went in with locals which was great to see ..... made welcome and menu had good choice and labelling for gf, though you did have to guess for dairy free ( not a problem though as they knew what was in the dishes and had alternatives). All four of us enjoyed our dishes and they brought oil and balsamic vinegar out for the salad as gluten in the dressing. #impressed. Decor has had some thought to it with interesting standard lamps that give a cosy feel. Only criticism and not sure how they can sort it is ..... most of the specials had gone because they had a party of 16 turn up at lunchtime who hadn’t booked! So eaten out of house and home on the specials. Fortunately the main menu has a well balanced choice but still had to look at a board that offered exciting dishes including pheasant knowing they weren’t available. Will definitely be back.

A year later almost and nothing has changed. The "landlord" is obnoxious and biased about how good the pub is obviously. But why 'slag off' the other pub in the village? Not professional at all, and the food is over rated and over priced...

Great local pub. Friendly service. Good pints on tap. Solid food. What isn’t there to like? We were here when there was a steak and wine offer, which was great (two steaks and a bottle of wine for £25).

We had to try the new Sunday lunch menu and we were not disappointed. Roast beef served with roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, cheesy leeks and a proper Yorkshire - not one of those rock hard crispy things restaurants often serve. Followed up with the best freshly cooked Blueberry Bakewell and cream. The staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks very much

We celebrated our daughter's 5th birthday party today at Amazing Grazing. It was incredible- marquee set up with tables; smaller marquee with tuff trays of games; whole paddock with tonnes of activities from building to tyre rolling to a miniature flower shop; goat, pig and alpaca supervised feeding. Superb from start to finish. Fantastic value for money and Taro was so helpful right from booking to the day itself making sure it was the best experience for our little girl and her friends.
