We visited our daughter in Exeter for her birthday and stayed in a cottage in Exmouth (Halstead Farm) which was great. We booked Sunday lunch and opted for the Swan Inn in Lympstone. It was a lovely 30 min walk from the cottage along the coastal path. The pub is delightful and cosy and we were attended to promptly by the very freindly staff. We all had great meals especially my daughters beef which was simply amazing, and I loved my Lamb and mint pie too!! My wife had the freshly caught crab which she says was the nicest she has ever had. All the other food we saw looked great too and would highly recommend for a Sunday Lunch.

For a pub that charges premium prices you expect something a bit special. What you get is lacklustre service from staff who haven’t been shown even the basics of working in a restaurant/pub. I want to stress this is not their fault, they haven’t been trained properly. The food is also a bit hit and miss to the extent that we’ve stopped eating there. Shame, as it had been showing some good improvements. I don’t know whether it is lack of competition, or complacency but they have gone off the boil, which is a shame for what could be a fantastic pub in a great location.

We booked by phone earlier in the day and my wife asked for a table in the bar as we've eaten there many times before and the bar has a more cosy atmosphere than the restaurant. When we arrived the bar was busy and loud as the rugby was on. We wish we had been told the rugby would be on when we booked but it did not pose a massive problem, the restaurant was virtually empty, so we asked the man on the desk, who turned out to be the manager, if we could have a table in there instead. He said no, then added that he had already turned people away from our table to accommodate us. He was quite abrasive so both my wife and I automatically apologised - for what I'm not sure, but it felt as if the suggestion had offended him. My wife replied "It's fine, I'm sure we're not sat right in front of the screen". The manager said "You are". People who had come to watch the rugby were at our table - our booking was for nearly half way through the match. They were nice and made space for us. We were blocking their view of the game, which was awkward. We did our best to sit along the side of the table but we couldn't all fit so inevitably we were in their way. It was too noisy to chat to each other. We had planned to have a nice meal and drinks to celebrate my wife's birthday, but we just ordered some chips so that we could get out as quickly as possible. The staff were friendly and the chips came quite quickly and were nice enough. About half an hour after arriving my wife went to the toilet and noticed that most of the tables in the restaurant were still empty. She asked a member of staff if any were free - the staff member said she thought they were. Another member of staff said she would take a look at the bookings but before she could get anywhere the manager came over and cut in. He told my wife he was doing us a favour letting us have a table at all as we'd only booked that day. He said they were fully booked, with online bookings coming in all the time, and went on to add an irrelevant brag about being fully booked for Sunday lunch for the next 3 months (which is a blatant lie - I could book a table for today or next Sunday on their website - not that I am likely to. I also discovered there were several slots free yesterday evening when I got out of the pub and got some mobile reception - bizarre!) When my wife was trying find a solution with the manager, he quickly became argumentative. She is not confrontational in nature so she decided to walk away from the situation. He started shouting at her as she left. She went into the toilets and cried. What possible justification can he have for making her cry? We left at about 7pm. The restaurant was still predominantly empty. Once we had left my wife again broke down in tears and she explained what had happened when she spoke to the manger. Goodness knows what we had done to offend him but his scorn for us seems totally uncalled for and his management of the situation was abysmal. Thanks to all the other staff who were lovely and sympathetic - we are just a nice family who wanted a nice meal to celebrate my wife's birthday. I am local and when I mentioned our experience to friends several suggested the manager we ran into is called Darren - apparently he is quite well known for being rude to customers. It is a much nicer place without him.

We had the most delightful visit to the swan on Lympstone with friends, a wonderful village . The swan is located next to the train station which we found easily. The food and staff were welcoming and helpful with the menu, the pub atmosphere was a joy full of happy punters. We all enjoyed a variety of dishes served promptly and with a smile. Thank you so much for such a memorable day. Walking around the village we discovered the sea glass art gallery a cafe and the stunning views over the river Exe continued to walk to Exmouth along the estuary path. Well worth a trip

I’ve been to the Swan a few times in recent years, when I’ve been staying nearby and it’s a lovely pub for food and drinks. Always a really nice meal here and the pub looks great with the bunting outside. A lovely old pub with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I had a cheese ploughmans for my main which was lovely with the salad, pickles, sourdough and cheeses. My partner had a tofu katsu curry which I tried some of and that was gorgeous too. There’s a good selection of beers on draft and three ciders too.

During a recent three night stay in Lympstone we had two excellent meals at The Swan, including the mind-blowing Friday night paella. The food was great. Solid selection of local cask beers (Otter Bright my favourite). Staff courteous and attentive. Publican Darren Newman was extremely warm and hospitable, and a catalyst for conversations that immediately made us feel welcome in this charming, unspoiled, gem of a village. We left with the impression that The Swan is at the beating heart of this lovely community. Well worth a visit. We’ll be back.

So we decided on a day out in exmouth with Sunday lunch and booked the Swann at Lympstone . Having confirmed booking we arrived 2pm for 2.45pm table. When checking in we were told there were no Sunday lunches available as sold out. Why take the booking? No real apology as obviously made their money ! Money wasted on drinks but more important now it is too late to get anywhere else. Surely if you take bookings for 2.45 it would be courtesy to have enough food or to phone customer earlier to save wasted journey. No one really seemed to care so won’t be going back

Great location and fantastic sandwiches! The staff were really helpful and friendly, particularly one lady who gave us some recommendations for what to eat in the pub (and where to get coffee in Topsham). Unfortunately, the WiFi is very poor and the "owner" wasn't particularly welcoming, especially as we hadn't booked. Booking is advisable, but they found us a table easily.

We have visited a few times before tonight. We visited for the paella night. Was supposed be served @ 7pm then changed to 7.30 but were still waiting at 8.20!! Eventually at 8.45 I got my paella… swimming in fat!! Absolutely revolting. Clearly the chef has no clue on how to cook paella! Even my beagle could have cooked this properly. My husband had the ‘tough as boots’ ribs. We did complain but the Landlord was too busy eating and getting drunk with the locals to care about his customers. Awful attitude and bar staff were equally as rude and arrogant, ignored me for 10 minutes, he could see I was waiting but would rather have chatted to locals. Will not be returning again. We ate very tasty and good food and spent an evening in a great atmosphere. Many thanks to the great staff - we will definitely be back! It's a shame that the people sitting next to us at the table unfortunately couldn't (or didn't want to?) behave, behaved arrogantly and impossible, complained for trivial reasons, used their children appropriately and finally (planned?) refused to pay for a complete, sumptuous meal. To the shame of others, especially when they left rejoicing after the entire bill had been passed. We sat at the next table and could absolutely sympathize with the very patient and friendly staff. My family and I, tourists from Germany, are staying in Lympstone for our summer holidays, and today we visited The Swan for the second time to have dinner. The service was wonderful and very kind. We got everything we needed almost instantly; every wish was granted, and everyone made sure to accommodate us, even though our English is far from perfect. The drinks were served quickly, and we had a pleasant chat with the employees. Our food was delicious! We had the tofu, ribs, and ribeye steak, all of which were superb! No one was left unsatisfied or hungry. The desserts were even better. We had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and Right Mess, which you must try when you go there! The waiters and the owner ensured we were happy and felt welcome at all times. The Swan is probably one of, if not the best, pubs to have dinner in the area. A big endorsement from Germany!!!

Well, I'm back here after a year, having heard it's improved, but I've still found it could be much better. The tables are still too close together, but it seems that the seats themselves are newer and a better height for the tables. The food was up & down as was the service. The starters came in good time, but both the scallops and the creamy mushrooms were not good, the latter in a bowl served with fried crispy bread bits instead of atop ciabatta bread as on the menu, the former, of poor taste plastered in a paste of low quality parmesan cheese. We had to wait over 30 mins for our main courses, which was, of course, too long and dented our appetites. The mains of fish chowder and belly pork were, however, tasty and well presented when they eventually arrived. This is a lovely pub in a lovely place. It's just a shame it can't do better. Without competition from The Redwing or The Globe, I don't suppose it will, though.

Gorgeous pub with superb good and great beers on tap. Dog friendly. Staff super helpful! Locals can enjoy a discount too - a lovely touch 👍

Had been really looking forward to trying this pub but was very disappointed. The drinks were expensive, the portions small and the info that 10% service charge would be added to your food bill was in tiny letters at the bottom of the menu. Will not be visiting again.

Went in several times during our holiday, always lots of fresh fish choices, I'm vegetarian and had something different each time. Really enjoyed the folk evening

We had a great experience. The food was delicious. I’m a lobster novice and the proprietor very kindly assisted with a very difficult claw situation 😳. The whole team was friendly and there was a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Dodatki pierwsza klasa: kalafior w sosie serowym, jarmurz, pure z brukwi, karmelizowany pasternak, zielony groszek, pieczone ziemniaki. Oczywiście Yorkshire pudding i cudowny sos pieczeniowy. Bardzo mocno polecam.

Beautiful meal and very attentive staff. Booked last minute and had lovely spacious table in the entrance. All had different meals and were lovely. Darren was very friendly and chatted away. We have booked to go back as a bigger group for a birthday. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Fabulous meal, some of the best mussels I've had in a long time. My colleague had the lobster and said it was perfect. Visited whilst in the area for work, but would return for sure given the opportunity.

Had a Sunday lunch roast beef meal. The meal was good. However, the price of a pint of Korev was steep at £6.20. The pub is lovely, has a good atmosphere and staff were polite. However, we weren't shown a drinks menu with prices. A service charge of £3.70 was also added to our bill without being informed there would be a charge. I would have been happy to have tipped but felt it was a little dishonest to automatically add a service charge.

We visited The Swan, for lunch, last week after a lovely walk up the estuary trail from Exmouth. The pub itself is quite attractive, with masses of outdoor seating, and the inside is airy and welcoming, unlike the staff. So how was our lunch? Let me start with the good points. Our dining table was very comfortable, situated in a bow window and bathed in sunlight. The beers were tasty and my wife's ham and cheese plowman's was delicious, as was my dressed crab salad. Sadly we now come to the bad points. The young people serving were charmless and indifferent, and rather noticeably, at no time, ever used the words "thankyou", certainly not to me, and the only time I witnessed a smile was when they were sharing a laugh over something on their mobile phones. As I have said I had the dressed crab salad, gluten free option, and if your chef thinks that two slices of bread, from a pre-sliced loaf, plonked on the end of the salad board is worthy of a delicious dressed crab salad, they need to think again. And finally "card payment only", really, how sad? I don't think we'll be recommending The Swan to any of our relatives and friends, sadly.

Really nice cosy-but-large pub with excellent food. Service a bit slow, probably due to its popularity. Get there early!

Nice pub, with attentive staff. Enjoyed our meal - seafood platter special - it was huge - they had to move us to a larger table

We called in here for an early dinner last Friday whilst visiting Lympstone. The friendly team quickly found us a table in the restaurant and took our drinks order. I chose the Sea Bass with Scallops &Caviar, new potatoes & my Wife had Linguini with greens & Feta cheese. Both dishes were beautifully cooked, presented, and delicious .Would definitely dine here again & happy to recommend to others.

We we’re staying at Lympstone Manor and decided to walk from the hotel to the pub on the estuary footpath. The menu was good and the staff were friendly and efficient. Food was really nice and very reasonably priced. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Terrible sandwich for 10 pound!!! Tuna with no salad in it! Advertised as granary and came as sliced whole meal sweet bread! Sloppy mayonnaise only a tablespoon but mainly mayonnaise!! A few salad leaves on the side, a sandwich for £10 !!! Outrageous and a sandwich you would have in a greasy cafe somewhere!! Also a soda and lime was £2 40!! Absolute rip off and not friendly staff as no one came to ask if all was ok or any friendly greeting!

Perfect country pub with wide range of ales, beer, wine and spirits. One of the best carveries we have been to across Devon, Somerset and Dorset!

We were shown to our table by a lovely waitress, Eight minutes later we were served, Ten minutes later we get our drinks, Thirty minutes later we finally get our food, I ordered a toasted sandwich which to be honest was so flat it really wasn’t very nice, A handful of crisp and a flat limp selection of various chopped up salad leaves with half a cherry tomato and not even one slice of cucumber chopped up, My husband ordered the cream tea, It finally came out after my sandwich but the scone was hot, Who ever serves a hot scone for a cream tea, I reckon it was probably either microwaved from frozen or to freshen it up, But either way you don’t put cold clotted cream and jam onto a hot steaming scone, My husband refused it and sent it back (I didn’t blame him it was awful).

I was served a ‘holiday’ kebab… obviously weren’t expecting me to even think of coming back. Nice attentive service, ordered well in advance, but my pitta was dry and the fact that I got my small lamb kebab, served in a burger tray shows how small it was - for £9.90. Think best to use the chippy up the road, it was busy, showing they must be doing something right..

So, I’m quite partial to a waffle both savoury and sweet and I happen to think I am a bit of an expert lol. I had the Biscoff Waffle and it was so freaking awesome that I nearly went back again that evening (even though I was so full and knew I wouldn’t have been able to eat two). The waffle is superb and the texture is on point, the topping was perfect and a good ratio to waffle. Guys whatever you are doing, keep doing it as what you produced was the best I’ve ever had and I will be back!!!
