Spoken Cafe Bar in East Devon

On holiday for a few days. Nice enough place. Below average meal. Fish and chips- fish over cooked. Houmous was horrible never had bad houmus, So didn’t eat it. ( told them it wasn’t very nice but didn’t take it off the bill) Chorizo tapas was beautiful. Mussels for tapas was plentiful but too salty. Ravioli was lovely. Had lemon tart and cherry cheesecake for deserts both lovely flavours but the lemon tart had soft pastry on the bottom. Cherry ice cream was fantastic. I feel that if you choose the right thing , you will enjoy your evening

Booked a bottomless brunch for my BIG birthday and it didn't disappoint. The staff were friendly and very professional, the tapas were delicious and the cocktails were flowing. Great food, great staff , great cocktails ( and a few sore heads this morning) highly recommend

We had our 50th reunion at the spoken , they were the most patient and helpful staff, and I have even come across . The food was brilliant, and the tapas were really good . There were one or two that said the burgers weren't up too par ? But on the whole, I would recommend this restaurant

A fantastic evening of great food and service. Our table of 13 was very well looked after by attentive, friendly staff. We shared tapas to start and all had the shin of beef for main course which was delicious.

Well we pretended that we were on our hols. Thank you Lewis, James, Alex and the rest of the staff, names I am not sure of. The music, food and cocktails was our holiday destination in Exmouth. Superb and highly recommended the bottomless brunch. Go for it guys.

Visited on the first night of our holiday. A chilled vibe, wonderful staff and amazing food and drink. What's not to like? So much so we returned night after night

I had come to Exmouth to meet a friend, who was visiting from Hampshire. We went to another restaurant on The Strand but (luckily, as it turns out) they didn't serve food after 4pm, so we headed to Spoken. Delicious food and fantastic service from lovely staff - my annoying, squeaky dog was even given treats - and, as if by magic, a canopy rolled out over us just before it started raining! Thank you Spoken - you are highly recommended.

We are here now and had the most amazing food . If your in town give it a go really reasonable priced and delicious. Might come back later it's that good !!!! Cheaper by far than rockfish

Staying nearby, decided to try Exmouth, liked the look of this place, great helpful service, lovely decor and the food was excellent, well done for running such a fabulous place.

A very nice atmosphere. They were running out of certain foods when we went,but luckily that didn't affect us.

Good value venue offering nice choice of dishes and drinks. There is plenty of outdoor seating to take advantage of when the weather's fine.

Called in for early evening drinks, friendly staff, extensive drinks menu, comfortable seating in outside square, good start to the evening.

Great tapas place in the centre of town. Great to walk into such a warm establishment. Friendly and helpful staff. Quick service. We had the charcuterie platter for two with house wine at £30 (fabulous value!) plus a couple of tapas and everything was tasty and well presented - would have been 5 stars if the bread had been more plentiful. Highly recommend!

As soon as we went through the door was a fantastic welcome. We was 20 minutes early but they didn’t worry just welcomed us. The food was delicious so well cooked as for the staff wonderful and very hardworking always on the go. We would recommend anyone to go and try it. Thank you for a wonderful evening we will be back when next in Exmouth. 10/10 from me.

I was disgusted to see one of the chefs sniffing cocaine and then passing to someone whilst he was supposed to be working. I won't be back with my family and recommend others don't

Much improved since we were last there. The food then was so bad we were given a full refund. Now there is a new simpler and better tapas menu which was very tasty.

Lovely food, great service We came to Exmouth to go to the theatre. We found this lovely restaurant on the hoof. Food was fantastic service was beyond expectations. Well recommended to everyone.

Nice Bar set in the middle of Exmouth. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Staff friendly and welcoming. Nicely decorated inside and clean. Reasonably priced. We had a lattes which were nice. Would go again.

Great place for a light lunch with interesting menu, and good wine list. The front of house staff yesterday - Tom and Fred - friendly and professional. I enjoyed the coconut coated prawns, and my companion the wild mushroom ravioli with spinach, Parmesan and truffle oil. And the breads were excellent too. Finally, the prices are reasonable. Not unimportant. Thank you!

Freezer bag food that has nothing to do with Spanish tapas. The ravioli, which couldn't be fried, tasted good. Shame, cos the place has a nice atmosphere.

Got a booking on a wet and miserable Saturday afternoon for lunch. Nicely welcomed by our server upon arrival and sat down to an enjoyable atmosphere. Served by the same lovely and courteous server. Food was nicely done, although I'm not entirely sure worth the cost. None the less it had been nicely cooked and tasted good. The disappointment came at payment. NO CASH ACCEPTED! As a consumer, and someone whose line of work puts cash in my pocket (not forgetting the fact it's still legal tender and the currency of the UK) I'm growing increasingly frustrated at places operating this way. To add to this, we weren't even made aware from the off. It's such a shame, as It's a good establishment. But for this reason I wouldn't return again.

The burrata salad was delicious. Went in on a wet Saturday lunchtime, very understaffed but the staff there were really lovely and doing their best to keep up.

Needs one or two more staff on a Friday night. The waiter handled it well but there was a long wait for our food which was only OK when it came. My burger bun had been grilled but it was just tough and burned. I'm sure the bun was nicer before it was put near the grill. I'd go back for a drink but will go elsewhere for food.

Good service and a good atmosphere, a bit let down by the food. Had a gyros that wasn't really a gyros more of a Lebanese flatbread with stuff on, couldn't fold it with out it falling apart. Son had a pizza that was just a flatbread with some tomato puree on and cheese. It was fine but expected a bit more.

Drinks only...nicely done out place, cool vibe! Parked round the corner. Outside seating galore in the nice square centre of Exmouth. Table service, the young staff very friendly and efficient. Reasonable pricing too. Will go back next time in town!

Went on a Saturday night in November - first impression coming in from the dark was of light, warmth and colour - great decor! Staff are lovely & friendly, food was delicious - we had gyros and both thoroughly enjoyed - perfect size portions - didn't feel ill when we left! I thought prices were good in relation to what you pay for a main in most places.. It was quite loud so maybe not come on Sat nighr if you prefer quieter; however, we loved it - a must try if you love a vibrant atmosphere & mediterranean food.

A delicious, delightful, tasty, and well presented Sunday luncheon served fast, friendly, and with care by George and his able compatriots. First class beef and pork and excellent many accompaniments of the finest quality. Super drinks from a wide selection. I cannot recommend it highly enough... 👌🍺🍷🍸

The drink selection was amazing and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, talk to us and advise. Highly recommend this place, we only had a few drinks but would love to eat here next time we visit!

Its ok for a drink but wouldn't stop for anything more, I've heard friends saying that the Tapas are good but after a small selection of them with a couple of drinks being presented with a bill for over £100, not that great really.

We sat outside in the evening as it was a lovely hot day. Lots of seating and really busy with people drinking. Lovely area outside with fairy lights. It felt like we were in Italy. The waiting staff were good considering the amount of people there. The only downside for us was the food. I had the prawn and chilli linguini. There were only a few tiny prawns and it was quite bland. My husband had a burger which he said was ok. We also had a jug of Sangria that didn’t taste like it had any alcohol in it. Such a shame as such a great location.

Really tentative friendly staff and a great place to go for a drink! Food on the other hand is very poor quality so we would eat elce where in the future.

The food is great, quite delicious. We loved the roast lamb, the portion was great for 2. The place has a excellent vibe and the staff is kind and very efficient. We had a lovely meal.

Visited for the first time in two years, new chef. Prawns not deveined, ring of chorizo which was not chorizo. cocktails that were tragically watered down. A very confused menu and a waiter who didn’t care for feedback. Don’t visit

Went here for something to eat on my birthday. The weather was nice, so we sat outside we got flatbreads, which were amazing, so simple but tasty highly recommend . The truffle parmesan chips are the best ! We had cocktails which were lovley too ! Overall really happy with our meal and drinks , service was good too staff really freindly!

Been here many times before, however today when we went, the menu has been drastically reduced, and when items ordered, they did not match what was on the menu, service was good but that’s about it, go here for drinks but forget the food

Way to ruin my 30th wedding Anniversary Spoken .! Made an 830 booking to be told on arrival that couldn’t be the case because the kitchen closed at 8 . We did get seated and served food but I didn’t need the rude attitude on arrival . Word to the wise Spoken , don’t use open table booking’s system if it doesn’t match your kitchen hours .

Visited on a Sunday expecting food. No food served on this day. Food served only three days a week. Cocktails were packed with ice. Consequently hardly any cocktail.

Evening meal. The ordering system was straightforward, you go to the hatch outside, but it was slow as only one order could be taken at a time. We had tapas: sardines, hummus, croquets and patatas bravas. It tasted delicious, however £6.50 for what turned out to be one sardine wasn’t great value at all. We also had drinks, I wanted a decaffeinated espresso martini but sadly they didn’t do decaf coffee so couldn’t make one. Nice enough.

Authentic tapas, as good as you would get in Spain. Pork Belly fab croquettes and patatas bravas all excellent

We were really impressed with Spoken. The staff were good, the good great - and excellent value for money - and the atmosphere welcoming. A good range of vegetarian small plates was really pleasing for us. We've been a couple of times and each was just a good (and we would definitely go again) but it can get a bit noisy at the bar early Saturday evening. If that's something that might bother you just go a little earlier or later.

Booked food for 3.30 weeks in advanced , the day we booked we received a reminder about our booking. Arrived and it was closed, staff unlocked the door and said we are not opened until 4 and kitchens not opened u til 5pm. We explained about our booking and they said it wasn’t their fault. No apology or explanation. We decided since it had such good reviews we would return once it opened. We arrived back, gave our name for the booking and told sit wherever. Sorry we returned, rude staff, bad food. Not sure if the staff were having a bad day, but considering there was 10 people in the restaurant, I would have expected a decent level of service. £120+ for drinks and bad tapas, I wouldn’t return.

Second time we've been there. Food and service was great!

I booked a table for the Mothers Day brunch and wasn’t too sure what to expect as I know it’s different to the usual menu. We were both incredible impressed with the food and the variety that was available with Mediterranean twists on brunch classics like chorizo eggs Benedict with Smokey paprika hollandaise sauce which was amazing! The dessert was incredibly delicious (lovely almond and orange cake with creme fraiche and loads of honey!) and I really hope that these brunch items are here to stay. Very reasonable price too and the service was fab. If the brunches stay on the menu you’ll have a very regular customer!

We went to spoken this evening booked a table for 4,asked for a regular table not height seating.when we got there there we we were given a table with stool high seating even though one of our party had difficulties getting on the high seats and another was 70 years of age however we accepted that they had no other seating.food was lovley but when we came to settle the bill we had already rounded the bill to leave a tip but they had added one£3 as well! We did question this but she told us she could do anything about it. George come back! The menu on line is not the one on offer, service isn’t great either.wehave been coming to spoken since forever but so disappointed tonight.

Dropped in for dinner. Really friendly. Great atmosphere. Was lovely to see it busy midweek. Food was fabulous and great value. Thoroughly recommend.

We didn't eat but the venue it's self, service and drinks were very good

Disappointing experience tonight. We had booked table for 8.30. Ordered and had our mains went to order dessert and the waitress told us that the kitchen had closed at 9pm. Asked to speak to the manager and she then said that the kitchen wasn't closed but they had ran out of most deserts - only ice cream and the chocolate brownies were available. The food we had was very good. One of us had the burger and another the Moroccan chicken both of which were excellent. I had the tapas option which was also very good (wild mushrooms croquettes and the hummus with pitta bread).A more generous serving of mayonnaise would have been appreciated the serving I received was tiny. From 9pm onwards the music became louder not at all conducive to a relaxed meal and conversation. In future I'll revisit during the afternoon not for dinner in the evening Toilet was also an issue - no toilet paper provided in the ladies and no soap in the mens.

I recently went here with my partner to celebrate our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. Immediate thoughts when walking in are that the atmosphere and welcome from the staff were fantastic. The food was both of great quality and also not overpriced like other similar restaurants (I'm usually reluctant to have tapas for the latter reason - but I can safely say that eating here won't cost you the earth). The wine choice was also top notch 👌 would thoroughly recommend.

Well, talk about customer service.....this venue says its open from 12 mid-day to 11 in the evening, but on the 1st December at 2pm it was closed....not a notice of why on the door or any hint of a problem....this is NOT the way to treat regular customers....not impressed

Staff are rude, Table service is frustrating as staff don't even serve you for up to 20mins. Then take another 20mins to get your drinks. Food is over priced for the portions and not enough options. This place just seems to care about money
