Visited for the 4 course taster lunch - fantastic food and beautiful setting. Arriving with a seasonal winter cocktail and canapes in the lounge area of the hotel; the room is very cosy and you could easily spend hours there relaxing with a drink and enjoying the views of the gardens and the estuary. Moving into the dining room for lunch: sea bass ceviche, shellfish ravioli and lobster bisque, Cornish hake, and orange souffle. Every course was very well balanced and very light and enjoyable. The sommelier recommended to us an Austrian white wine Allram Gruner Veltliner which was very enjoyable and I'll certainly be buying some for home

I must say I have already submitted a faultless review for Lympstone Manor and it is true. Lympstone Manor Hotel, on site staff, quality and culinary experience is fantastic! There is a “But” Administration staff decided to charge the full amount of our purchases for restaurants and bar bill incurred during our stay not only to my card on check-out but also to a pre-authorisation of £50.00 that was taken on arrival!. This effective has left me with a pending transaction on my account approaching £1000.00 that will take approximately 8 to 10 days to clear. Now I must stress that I am fortunate enough not to worry about the money. I do however worry about the professionalism of the staff who took both payments and the member of staff I discussed the issue with who advised that I should take the matter up with my bank! ( As the merchant Lympstone Manor should have been able to cancel one of the transactions) Poor shoddy, unprofessional. We will NOT be returning. Great place! Unprofessional conduct!

We had been given an afternoon tea experience for Christmas 2023 but only just got round to using it as we have a toddler, when I called to book (we live an hour away) I was told the earliest sitting was 3pm which would mean sadly we would only be able to stay for an hour to get back to pick our daughter up from nursery at 5pm, when booking this I made clear to the lady who I spoke to on the phone that we would need a prompt sitting to ensure we maximised the experience as we would only have an hour, we arrived at 14:50 and were asked to wait in the bar area which was beautiful as was the manor! We were seated at 15:03 and given a menu, at 15:12 we were asked what drink we wanted and given cream and jam, then waited until 15:27 for the tea to come out which then sadly didn’t have the lid on correctly so tea leaves ended up in my cup, the staff were quick to resolve and get a new tea pourer but my husband did have to ask if there was any reason for the hold up of almost half an hour to get a drink when we did make it clear at booking we only had an hour, A gentleman did come to apologise which was appreciated, but it meant by the time the food came out at 15:31 we had 29 minutes to eat the food and didn’t really get to enjoy it as it felt very rushed, it was also a bit strange that cream and jam came out before the drink and really ahead of the food, I think that dampened the experience which we had looked forward to for almost a year but that being said the house gardens and seating area was beautiful and we couldn’t fault the food at all it was amazing! Tasty and we kept saying we wouldn’t be able to eat it all but we did (all be it a little quickly and in a rush) but well deserved Michelin star the food was one of the best we tasted!! We left to drive home talking very positively about the food but just such a shame that it all felt very rushed

Stopped for lunch on a Friday and was really looking forward to the a la carte menu. Opted for 3 courses of appetiser, starter and main. Appetiser was a lobster ravioli which was very disappointing. Bland and lacked flavour and the texture reminded me something the kids would make with play- do. For the price I was expecting flavour to go with the refined looking food. The room setting isn’t great and we were facing a doorway and passing traffic. Please refurb this room, your seating makes no sense at all. Michael - suggest you rethink some of these dishes and I’m surprised anything I ate would be worthy of a star. Sorry to be harsh but this was my worst meal in a Michelin star restaurant.

Fantastic culinary experience, the food was exquisite and met all our expectations. There are 3 menus you can choose from on the night, Estuary tasting menu, Signature tasting menu and Al la carte, all 3 well put together. We went with the Estuary (fish) with wine pairing by an excellent and experienced sommelier called Diego.

This restaurant certainly has the wow factor & is seriously conscious about quality, ingredients & service. The 8 Course Tasting menu was a real treat, with a menu that surpassed all expectations. The service is next level, & to be expected at this standard & class of restaurant; staff are incredibly attentive, passionate & knowledgeable. Quality of ingredients is sublime, all sourced responsibly, locally & seasonal. Courses are considered, have an element of surprise & overload your senses both visually & by taste. Each element of every course has depth of flavour which is hard to describe, but is savoured in each mouthful, & will be talked about for weeks! Not your everyday, & certainly a place for most for special occasions, but, a must visit if you have the privilege.

Went for afternoon champagne tea. Very disappointed, especially given the price. I could have created a better selection from M&S. Chef, when you go for afternoon tea you expect cakes not fancy mousse. And why so stingy with the clotted cream?

We had heard this was a great restaurant, what a mistake. It was a dated room, with very strange seating, most of the tables facing a blank wall. We could just see into the gardens. The large dated curtains covered quite a bit of window too. Then the food was very average, and very over priced. The staff didn’t seem to know what was going on, you felt there had been no training. I feel Michael Cain needs to do a lot of updating, and retraining . It’s just been left to get very dated and dilapidated.

I messaged them via Instagram for help with booking my tickets ( my own fault I was just being silly ) at 9pm the night before the event. Good property. Average food. It’s a shame given a chef owns the hotel but I have been on numerous occasions and always leave feeling a local small plates restaurant would have been nicer. Such potential. Not quite executed. Really sassy staff too which dulls the experience - it’s doesn’t cost much to smile and not sulk at guests… That being said, if you want to pay £19 for a cocktail and a superb view this is the place for you. The grounds are stunning. That’s the only real selling point.

We stayed for 3 nights in this beautiful hotel in a lovely setting. We were welcomed and treated like long stnding and honoured friends. My wife had an accident shortly before we were due to stay and because of her reduced mobility, we were moved with a few days notice to a beautiful accessible room that was perfect. I know this all sounds a bit too gushing but it is a really marvelous place. Sadly we could not justify the cost of eating there. Breakfast was fantastic!

We dined at the Pool House, Lympstone Manor, I was so disappointed. I ordered the vegetarian burger. It was very average with cheese, mushroom and peppers, no burger as such and the tasteless fries were clearly from the frozen aisle at a supermarket. Dessert was worse, i ordered banana parfait with vanilla ice cream. I accept that the parfait may have been just not my taste but to serve it with lemon sorbet, well it was awful. They did remove the cost of dessert from our bill when we complained but to be honest the whole experience was shambolic. We sat at a table by the window with a beautiful view but it turned out to be too hot for us so we relocated to a different table. Our original table was not cleaned and another couple were told it needed to be cleaned so sat elsewhere. Yet another couple arrived and wanted to sit there and were again told it needed to be cleaned. They asked if they could wait, so eventually it was prepared for them. Another table sent their food back as the order was wrong. Our table was cleared in installments, plates first, some time later, the bowls and side dishes, yet more time passed before glasses were cleared. It was poor from beginning to end and I will not be recommending it.

We came here for a Mother's Day lunch; food did not disappoint. We had a lovely time and staff were great. Unfortunately, service appeared to take some time but mostly managed to occupy ourselves whilst waiting. The table we were sat at had be brought in from outside and was leaking water throughout, causing an uncomfortable feeling during our meal. Staff did apologise for this but unfortunately no alternative was offered/provided. The staff organised golf buggies to take us back up to the car park due to the rain, which was very much welcomed.

We suspect that most visitors to Lympstone are attracted by the reputation of Michael Caines and to enjoy the food. No sign of MC during our two day stay, but no problem - his kitchen team did him more than proud, the cooking absolutely on point. We had the Lyme Bay scallops on both nights as they were so good. We also had duck - probably the best duck dish we have ever had anywhere (!), and the beef fillet on the other night not far behind. Portions are generous. Interesting wine recommendations by the glass from sommelier Patricia to our taste and went very very well with all the dishes (Albariño from Uruguay - who knew?) Breakfast less successful - fruit bowl selection very under ripe, and the poached eggs rather over done on both days. Service also seemed rushed at breakfast with main dishes arriving before we had time to finish our starters. However excellent yoghurts, croissants and pain au chocolat! It may seem churlish to complain about our room when it was a two category upgrade on the one booked. However we found it pretty small overall and there was a narrow passageway access from the hall in which the hanging cupboards were situated - somewhat difficult to access. The main “selling point” of the room was a balcony with great views over the Estuary when you were out on it - wonderful on a sunny summer day perhaps, somewhat superfluous in early March! The bed was very comfortable, and housekeeping standards immaculate. Quality biscuits in the room and cake in the pantry in the afternoon nice touches and breached the gap between breakfast and dinner! We had booked (and prepaid) a winter dinner, bed and breakfast package. On checking out we were somewhat surprised to find that “dinner” had been separated out on the bill and a service charge applied. We had of course expected to pay service charge on any extras (such as wines and bar costs) but we have never previously been asked at any hotel to pay a service charge on part of a pre booked “package” and felt this was cheeky to put it mildly. It was removed by the assistant manager on challenge, but it I am afraid it always leaves a slightly sour taste whenever one feels it necessary to query a bill.

It was impossible for me to consider any score other than 5. The food was sublime, the service was superbly subtle and the ambiance was perfect. We had the set lunch menu. Yes it appears expensive but it’s more than a meal it’s an experience- welcome cocktail and canapés in the bar, followed by appetiser, starter, main and desert in a small, fairly intimate room (only 6 tables), staff who are so attentive but also only there when needed. The lunch was topped off by Michael Caines coming to speak to us and pose for photos. Loved it all and can’t wait to be back

I’m only giving 3 stars overall as we haven’t eaten there yet. However the customer service was absolutely brilliant. My fiancé and I went in to look around for our wedding dinner and the staff went out of their way to show us around and give us ideas on what we could do. They were very proud to work there and their enthusiasm shone in their work, making us want to eat there even more. The only draw back is they stop serving lunch at 2:30pm and start dinner at 6pm. We wanted out wedding dinner at 3/4pm so we can’t taste their lovey food however we can have a champagne lunch or high tea which also looks delicious.

Due to my health problems, I ordered coffee by mistake, they changed it with no problem, but were concerned that it was their mistake. The cakes were sublime, I've eaten at top hotels over the years, but these were unforgettable. So delicate, light and perfectly balanced flavours. The sandwiches and scones were equally exceptional. Just a word of advice, ensuring your booking with a credit card doesn't mean you've paid, you have to pay on the day unless you want to look like an amateur crook, as I did!! A couple of staff members just seemed like they would rather be somewhere else. Wish we had skipped this place on our journey. Nothing special and expensive for what it offers as a lunch special . We decided to try Lympstone Manor as they had a special lunch offer £69 for 3 courses or £79 for 4. On arrival, we realised that embarrassingly our booking had not been confirmed, but the head waiter took it all in his stride and sorted everything out without any fuss. Everything was perfect, service 1st class and food delicious. The bill for 4 having 4 courses was just under £450, including drinks and a bottle of wine, which I think is great value for Michael Caines restaurant. We visited for an afternoon tea with our young children. The location is absolutely stunning and the gardens are beautifully decorated with art and statues. This would be a lovely place to stay for the weekend. However, our afternoon tea was a little bit of a let down. We were seated on low couches with coffee tables for our afternoon tea and when we asked if there was an alternative table were told that the usual spot in the restaurant was very busy today and that’s why we were where we had been seated. Not a five star approach to service at all. We were eventually moved and served our afternoon tea 45 minutes after our booking time. Charging full price for children (£50 each) is also unusual and we left feeling a little short changed. Not a great experience all round for 90 minutes and £200.

On a beautiful summers day it was great to arrive and have drinks on the lawn overlooking the estuary. We took the opportunity to have a glass of Michaels Champagne, which whilst expensive, was delicious. We had the Taster Menu, the bread was really flavourful...

We stayed three nights and dined twice. The first meal couldn't be faulted, the second could. Personally I can't bear the penchant for the dim reverential lighting experience. And our accommodation in a Shepard's Hut was a triumph of style over function.

Lovely building on the inside, with lots of nice features. The furnishing and the ambiance is nice, not too formal but warm and welcoming. Welcomed on arrival and shown to a bar / lounge for pre lunch drinks and to review the menu. Appetisers served...

We had high expectations of what would be £200+ lunch for two and overall the experience was okay. Not bad enough to complain about, or to recommend. A building of sufficient grandeur to be really impressively decorated, but pretty much every picture and ornament is...

To be clear, we found the food exceptional, exquisite, and extraordinarily well presented. Definitely well worth an "excellent" rating. Unfortunately (or fortunately) fine dining is a whole experience: not just what is on the plate and in the glasses; it is also about the (human/social)...

Based on Michael Caines’ reputation this was a lunch we were looking forward to. Sadly, the experience didn’t hit these expectations. There was nothing very wrong or poor with any particular aspect, but it didn’t hit the heights. We had the lunch menu, which gave...

Being a Michelin starred restaurant, you expect top quality and yes, it was top quality, it’s just that there wasn’t much of it. A family occasion consisted of a fair few people. The starter was tasteless, the fish was mackerel, yes nice but the cheapest...

Once, Michael Caines' food was world-beating. Now it's tired, complacent, and tedious. Lympstone Manor occupies a lovely site. If the weather permits drinks on the lawn, overlooking the estuary, then make sure you take the opportunity. That for us was the highpoint. We both had...

Probably the best Fish restaurant in Sidmouth. The moment we entered the restaurant and received a warm welcome from the front of house staff we knew we were in for a treat. From the starters through to the excellent main courses (Whole Plaice and Fillet of Hake) the food was sublime. The quality of Neils food preparation and cooking was sublime. I met Neil afterwards to thank him in person for the high quality evening he and his staff provided.

On holiday for a few days. Nice enough place. Below average meal. Fish and chips- fish over cooked. Houmous was horrible never had bad houmus, So didn’t eat it. ( told them it wasn’t very nice but didn’t take it off the bill) Chorizo tapas was beautiful. Mussels for tapas was plentiful but too salty. Ravioli was lovely. Had lemon tart and cherry cheesecake for deserts both lovely flavours but the lemon tart had soft pastry on the bottom. Cherry ice cream was fantastic. I feel that if you choose the right thing , you will enjoy your evening
