The Fox Inn at Bramdean is a real gem of a pub and a rare find these days. The building originates from the 17th century, but much altered in appearance over the years, and is Grade II listed. By not being overly modernised, it has retained a genuine old pub atmosphere and it is all the better for it. The floor is made of old wide oak planking which creaks and squeaks when you walk on it. There are low beams and wood panelling in the bar area. The floor plan is idiosyncratic; the bar is ‘L’ shaped. It all provides for a delightfully aged, cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Three real ales were on tap when I visited: Langham’s Session Bitter; Otter Bitter and Hopback Summer Lightning. I had Chicken Supreme from the lunch menu and it was excellent. The large chicken leg was cooked perfectly, so that it was still moist and tender; the cream sauce, with mushrooms and wilted spinach was well seasoned. Service was friendly and prompt. This pub is a bit out of the way but definitely worth taking a trip out to visit. Highly recommended.

Slightly weird start- we walked in and weren’t sure if we were waiting in the correct spot (we were), as the servers were looking at us blankly, and it took a good couple of minutes for anyone to acknowledge us. They couldn’t find our booking for my partner’s birthday on the system, although the waitress said she had tables free in her section any way. Although, it was the table under bright lights and right by the front door and pass so I can see why it was still available… The service from then on was very friendly and timed well without being too slow or too pushy. The food looked great, however it fell a bit short of expectation. The batter on the fish was oddly sweet, and the chips were dry inside. The sponge of the sticky toffee pudding was gritty and grainy, although the sauce over it was tasty. The pub itself is lovely, and we will definitely return, however maybe just for drinks if improvements aren’t made to the food and service.

Quite disappointing. Staff friendly and attentive, but lots of repetition of different members coming and asking the same questions. Had to wait for a table despite a reservation. Staff apologetic, which was fine. Menu wise, no Wellington. Ordered some other dishes, two of which had rosemary fries. Five minutes later was told they had run out and only had fat chips. Food when it arrived was fine. Then dessert menu came. I ordered a fudge and chocolate dessert, only to then be told that wasn't available either. I didn't like any of the other few desserts left on the menu, so went without. The menu wasn't extensive, so to have several items out of stock by mid afternoon have put me off making the 45min trip there again.
