Was not expecting to be blown away by the portion size of the Sunday roast we had today. Well Presented delicious family-style Veg, I could not get enough of the sweet roasted Carrots not to mention the roast potatoes. To die for. I would not share My Lamb but it was too good to experience all by myself. Our last experience in the garden was good but inside upstairs is a must, so much character. Service was prompt and natural, with no hard selling. the food does it all. Do yourselves a treat and make the trip. Go for a long walk afters, recommended. Well, recommended. Well, Done Kitchen and Front of house. You will see me again. Jakes.

I often travel here for an evening meal, today I took the plunge and tried the "pie of the day", which as it happened was chicken and bacon. The pies are made by the owner, a Romanian fellow with a name I can not pronounce, much less spell. But the pastry! OMG this is the finest pie pastry I have ever tasted. I'm no expert, but I'm guessing he uses flaky pastry for the pies, rather than the usual shortcrust or puff top. We do have to educate him however about gravy. You don't serve beef gravy with a chicken pie! Not in England, anyway!

My wife and I took my parents here for Sunday lunch to celebrate Father’s Day. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. Great Sunday lunch menu and the food was delicious. I recommend the ‘nutless roast’ - their very tasty vegetarian option - and their roast potatoes are amazing. Also the chocolate brownie was a generous size and dripping with rich chocolate. Very good value too. This pub has a lovely, unpretentious homely feel. So glad to have it as our local!

We were taking my 88 year old Dad out for lunch and like to try new places. We arrived at The Ship at 12.30pm and were greeted by a lovely lady behind the bar who took our drinks order and, 10 mins later, a food order. Not overly busy but 20 mins after ordering all customers were warned of a food delay as there was only one person in the kitchen. Oddly, some people who ordered food after ours were served first (maybe theirs were ready meals?) At 1.35pm, 55 mins after ordering and still no sign of our meals, we decided to politely pay for the drinks and go. Lovely lady behind the bar was very apologetic. Just as we were about to leave the ‘cook’ came storming out the kitchen, looking very cross saying our food was on its way. He then had the audacity keep berating us, shouting for all to hear, that we had only waited 40 minutes. We only ordered pub regulars of gammon, scampi and fish cakes so maybe timing isn’t his forte! Won’t be going back anytime soon and can’t review the food as it never arrived!

3 of us visited on a late September evening, Very warm welcome from the staff. Good choice of drinks available and a reasonable choice on the menu. Dad's starter of Whitebait was excellent but maybe too large a helping for a starter. They both went for Lamb shank mains while I pushed the boat out for the fillet steak, which was cooked medium rare to perfection as ordered and the parmesan coated chips were lovely. All three thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Dad and myself finished things off with a lovely slice of cheesecake and mum chose profiteroles. Value was very good for home cooked pub food. The old stone pub was quiet and the lighting is not too bright with a mix of furniture. Would definitely visit again if in the area. Left a menu in our holiday let for others to find.

I arrived as they opened, and the barman (manager?) greeted me in a friendly manner and when asked told me they were serving in half an hour. I waited, and ordered. The staff are friendly, even to a solo male traveller, and the BBQ ribs were very well cooked. They fell away from the bone and were accompanied by a real side salad dressed with balsamic vinegar, and the obligatory chips (less said about them the better). Would I recommend it? Yes I think I would. Having had a similar dish at a Frankie and Benny's I can see now just how good the ribs at the ship are! They had too much BBQ sauce on for my taste, but a friend assures me she cant have enough BBQ sauce, so that's just me then!

Disappointing considering all the good reviews. I had fish cakes from the specials menu, which unfortunately weren’t very special. They were £16 and both were so dry, definitely not worth £16. We both had ice cream and it was really cheap quality that is usually given on a children’s menu, and that was £6. Staff were friendly though.

Food was disappointing. My friend had the fishcakes which were really dry and frankly looked like they'd come from a packet. I ordered gammon and got mostly peas. Dessert was ice cream which was clearly very cheap, the sort you can get a big tub of for a couple of quid in ASDA. We felt cheated as this cost the same as a quality meal yet I've had much better at Wetherspoons. Not much of an atmosphere either. We were also told we needed to leave before 9pm as they were closing up!

We decided to try the Sunday roast as the reviews were good. It was excellent! The beef was medium rare and loads of lovely veg too all for £12, the drinks were also reasonably priced and the service very friendly. It is to be expected that after the last 18 months food and drink costs will increase, but this lovely little pub are not on the bandwagon of charging extortionate prices. Well done!

We were spending a few days walking Winchester to Alton in a heatwave. Although we carried water we ended up stopping off a number of times to quench our thirst. Our drink of choice was soda and lime. The average cost of two pints of this was £2.80. However we were charged £5.60 at the Ship. I was served at the bar and we drank our drink in the beer garden. We were at the time deciding where to return to for an evening meal. Needless to say we did not return here

The pub has adapted well in relation to Covid, they had hand sanitiser, a one way system, screens and staff were wearing visors. Our drinks and food order was taken by a nice young lady who was polite and check if everything was okay part way through our meal. Then a man cleared our plates and took our order for dessert, he seemed very flustered and was rushing around a lot- having quite a big impact on the relaxing environment. I understand there were more customers being seated and they were probably under staffed- however for me personally this impacted my visited. The main courses were average, having ordered scampi, ribs, pie and fish. We went on a Tuesday evening when Eat out to Help out was taking place, I thought because of this they had made the portion sizes smaller but was reassured that they had not altered their portions sizes because of the scheme. If this is the case, we found the portion sizes not worthy of the menus full price, nor worth the price for the quality/taste of the meals. I can only speak on behalf of the 4 mains which we ordered, but we found these mains small and average. Still feeling hungry we ordered dessert. The waffle which we ordered had been left in the toaster for too long and it was very hard on the bottom. Unfortunately we ordered the cheese board for £10 which was very underwhelming as it was served on a small white side plate. It included 6 crackers, a slab of butter and a small chunk of Cheddar, Brie and Stilton cheese. When we spoke to the waiter about our dissatisfaction, he got quite defensive. We were told that the cheese was no longer being served on a board, that cheese was expensive and that we should just compare it to the other restaurants in the local area. To which I replied that perhaps customers be made aware that this dessert is a very basic cheese and crackers- not having any resemblance of a classic cheese board. I suggested that they added some chutney and grapes, which would greatly raise the standard, of which I was told it would be “considered”. So I hope this advice is taken on board, so future customers are not as disappointed as we were.

This pub is now in shared ownership with the Fox at Bramdean and they seem to have much in common. The menu was extensive and many dishes looked attractive. Since we only needed a light lunch, we had the soup of the day (watercress) which came with a small warm crusty loaf and proper butter - not the foil wrapped little parcel. Lovely place specialising in chocolates and indeed hot chocolate. Popped in today for a vegan hot chocolate, pot of tea and two cinnamon buns. All really good and a couple of salted caramel pieces of chocolate as tasters too. Will happily return to try some more and perhaps buy some chocolates too.

Had a very lovely Sunday roast here, we were in outside pod/shed but it was lovely and didn't feel left out of pub as staff still very attentive

Amazing! Best brunch in Winchester by a country mile and that’s against stiff competition. Food and service was delightful.
