Exceptional value food served by excellent staff. The choice of dishes is astronomical. We have been to so called posh nosh places and only had the choice of 6 or 7 mains. Go to Hinton Arms and you get a choice 8 or 9 then a specials board with another 6 or 7 mains......Fantastic as usual.

Booked a table in advance. Had to wait to be seated but that was no problem, by the time we had ordered a drink at the bar our table was ready. We were showed to our table but it was not laid and there were no menus. My partner had to find some menus. Neither was the specials board shown to us but I spotted it while at the bar. However other customers subsequently had the board brought to their table. We waited a while and thought that perhaps we had to order at the bar so approached the bar and was interjected by one of the waiters who said they would come to our table to take our order. Our food arrived I chose the haddock, mozzarella and spring onion fish cakes with chips and salad. The salad was lovely and that’s where it stopped. Sadly both the fish cake and chips were of poor quality, mass produced frozen Brake’s economy at best. I would have preferred one good quality homemade style fishcake rather than two which were dry and also overcooked. The chips… in the past the chips from Hampton Arms were to die for, triple cooked, crispy, fluffy and excellent quality, again you didn’t get many but you didn’t need quantity when you have quality! These again were mass produced frozen economy style chips; dry and tasteless. I would say to be objective that my partners roast and child’s chicken nuggets were both enjoyed and appeared to be good quality. That said my partner suspected the lamb was a sliced cook in the bag style but it didn’t stop him enjoying it. Service doesn’t appear to be what it used to either, with no one checking in on us part way through our meal. Disappointing experience and sadly we probably won’t return 😔

Disappointing all round, waited over an hour to get our food, which was far from wonderful for various reasons. Won't be going back there in a hurry. Serving staff very polite. Irish coffee served up in a cup and saucer.

What a treat! My friends & I stopped here on the off chance that we might be able to grab some lunch. We were shown to a table and looked through the menu and the specials board. The staff couldn’t do enough to help us make a meal choice. As we are pescatarians, they thoughtfully put together a delicious prawn and salmon salad as a main meal. Huge THANKS to the amazing chef for doing this. It was yummy. We will come again!

Heard so many good reviews from family and friends that we decided to book a table for my Nephews 20th birthday but we was all thoroughly disappointed. Me and my wife arrived before the rest of the party so asked for the table under the name it was booked at exactly 2:30pm the time of booking of our table. At first there was no table and then a few moments later we was told our table and that other guests was sat there so we had to ask to them to move as they was aware of a 2:30 booking until the member of the bar staff then proceeded to ask a waitress to remove the guests from our pre booked table (very bizarre in itself but ignored as can understand it was busy being the weekend) . Tried queuing to order drinks after being stood awhile to be told we could order at our table ( again ignored as they indeed did seem busy but no direction given as lots of other people was queuing for drinks also although they had a table ? ) Was then told by bar staff just as we was about to go sit down as a family that no more food orders for the moment as the kitchen is too busy ? Again ,pre-booked table and being told this before we even sat down as a family for a special occasion was not acceptable as if not enough capacity you should not be allowed to book and we wouldn’t travel 40 minutes outside of our area and would have just stayed local. Made our way back to the table but it was for 6 people and not the 7 people it was booked for. Would have assumed whilst we was at the bar common sense would have kicked in and someone would put an extra chair out but my wife had to go and get a chair for me. Drinks order came quickly to our table although zero Guinness was ordered by one of our party as driving and the waitress couldn’t even confirm if it was alcohol free she had to leave and come back to tell us - dangerous. We ordered one starter and 6 mains considerably quickly at our table and was told the member of our party was lucky that they got the last ribs. In this time we moved into the main garden with permission as it was a considerably hot day with no issues from staff. Over an hour later our party member was told no ribs so they had to re-order. Then when the food did arrive the starter was forgotten and we had to go and get our own cutlery 😂. Was told no drinks could be ordered to our table in the main garden , fine but very odd when other people we saw getting served in the main garden. I usually never complain I’m very laid back and I can understand how stressful it can be as I previously worked within a kitchen and front of house so I’m incredibly forgiving but god, I wish we went elsewhere . Let down is an understatement after we were sold this place on great reviews . Food -excellent . Staff - not welcoming, not thinking before they speak ( if they do) , no direction and appears to be a great lack in communication. Just more disappointed for my nephew as like I said , 20th birthday celebrations it was booked for.

Had a very good Sunday roast, albeit the carrots were a bit anemic in appearance - but still tasted good as did the fresh garden peas. The beef topside was plentiful and tender and the roast potatoes were excellent. The roasts run alongside the full menu, and we can recommend the fish pie. A good range of puds were also available - the chocolate gateau was rich but very nice. As to the setting, the hanging baskets and flower tubs are stupendous, without equal, which makes for a very pleasant environment for the outside seated area immediately next to the pub . Add in a very efficient and friendly service, then it all adds up to a very pleasant dining experience. We will be back….

Had lunch with a friend who lives locally. The outside of the pub is stunning, the flowers and hanging baskets are simply fabulous. It is such a wonderful first impression. Inside is cosy and welcoming. We ordered 2 cottage pies and 1 steak and kidney. My Husband said without doubt it was the best steak and kidney pie he had ever eaten!! It was huge but he managed to devour the lot! My friend and I struggled to finish the cottage pie, it was a very generous portion and delicious, served with lovely fresh vegetables. My friend took the rest home for dinner the next day. The service was friendly and courteous. We will definitely return when visiting again and already looking forward to it!

After coming from Queen Alexandra Hospital, we booked the Hinton as a stop off. Well we should have kept driving.! Starters were okay. Main meals, my husbands was okay but mine ( roast lamb ) was utterly disgusting. Meat was definitely not nice, it was stringy and tough as old leather. Yorkshire stone cold. Carrots and roast potatoes were tasteless, cauliflower cheese was okay as were the peas. All in all I spat the horrible meat out and walked out of the pub, left my husband to complain and pay the bill. He didn’t complain and paid the bill to get out as fast as possible. I’ve been sick with an upset tummy all night. Had I been thinking clearly I’d have complained my self, but I’d not long received the worst news possible about my brother and could not think straight. I would never ever go back even if they changed the chef, the landlady is very miserable couldn’t even crack a smile. However the staff are very nice.

Very negative review. Shocking older staff members towards the younger staff who seem to be around 15-16 (still in school) they seem to have no sense of appreciation and a huge lack of manners. They treat the younger staff like absolute dogs. I don’t recommend visiting as they have a poor attitude and respect for one another. Also not to add a screaming woman constantly shouting at staff for small mistakes in a way no person should. I do not recommend to anyone and by the looks of things should be taken over by someone who has respect for themself and their staff.

We called in here after attending the Hinton Ampner Christmas Display, and wanted to avoid the (dire!) National Trust cafe. The staff were very welcoming to us and our dog, and the service was brisk and professional. The food, however was a bit underwhelming. We had fishcakes which were tasty but small, and looked factory made. These came with a small salad (more of a garnish) and a generous amount of chips. The vegetable lasagne was mushy, with no discernible layers of pasta and sauce. It was served in individual bowls and was more of a cheese-topped stew. Looking at other reviews, it seems like this pub does really good roasts and pies, so that may be a better choice for some. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but wasn't good either, and the nice chips didn't make up for the shortcomings in quality and portion size.

Truly a large steak & kidney pie - tasty and succulent tender huge chunks of beef. We were not disappointed with the steak and kidney pie. Served with individual portions of veg: carrots, sprouts and broccoli then another individual dish arrived - of new potatoes. We shared a pudding - Berry Eton Mess also tasty with right balance of the sharpness of the berries and the ice cream, meringue and cream.

My steak & kidney pie was BIG, as the menu stated! Excellent quality, too, with more kidney content than I've enjoyed in years. And the price was very reasonable. Another's fishcakes were also reported as excellent. A guest's steak Wellington was pronounced excellent, although a little expensive. But my whitebait starter was rather a meagre offering, while tasty enough, and others' starters looked similarly small. One companion's main dish of "fish of the day" was also small, of starter proportions. Sweets, generally, were reported as good and ample. But the cheese & biscuits (not ordered) seemed very pricey at £11? Overall quality and pricing was very acceptable, but one seems to need to know which dishes to order!

We sadly visited a totally different Hinton Arms to the one we normally visit and are very happy with. Food was poor, three of us had roast beef which was badly over cooked and as tough as old boots, Yorkshire puddings were just a soggy mush. One of had fish and chips which was ok though. I had stem ginger pudding which was good but with a very meagre portion of custard. Eaton mess was just a bunch of ingredients dumped in a glass with not very nice cream. Service was poor. The pub was extremely busy and the waiting staff were struggling to cope. We did complain but waiting staff not interested. We would not go back again on a Sunday!

My mother had the burger, which she said was a good size, as well as coming with a generous sides of onion rings and coleslaw. She also said the chips were cooked to perfection. Very good value for the generous portions and excellent quality of food served. Waitress was extremely helpful and attentive and made the visit a very pleasant experience. Lovely seating area with huge garden and lovely views over a field and a play area for children. Also a beautiful selection of hanging baskets all around the outdoor seating.

This has been our favourite pub for food for about 3 years now. We hadn’t been since the first lock down until last weekend. I read about their Covid Safety measures and was impressed as I am clinically vulnerable. We heard about their roasts when we were there last Saturday and booked a table for today. Firstly the food is extremely good; the gravy tastes like mother used to make gravy; everything is plentiful but quantity does not come at a cost to quality! It’s superb. Last week I had cottage pie with cheesy mash - it’s very good and today I chose roast pork. There were 7 slices and it came with 3 large roast potatoes - proper ones not frozen! And 4 veg plus a very light Yorkshire pudding. Everything is really hot, even the plates so your food is not cold after the first 6 forkfuls. Every member of staff wears a mask all the time and there is a bottle of sanitiser on every table. I felt really safe there. Why did I decide to write a review today? Because there was one more mature lady behind the bar and the waiters and waitresses were youngsters - they were exceedingly busy because it’s a lovely day and lots of people turned up unexpectedly for a meal on the outside seating. On top of that they had problems with some equipment in the kitchen. Those youngsters carried on like real pros! They were smiling, polite and at no point ‘lost it’. And then when we asked for our bill we received an apology for any delay we suffered and asked if everything had been ok. People are always moaning about young people but hats off to them today - they deserve a shout out! We shall be returning in the near future!

We had mixed meals, three good and three inedible, the spaghetti Bol in the specials menu was tasteless and no sauce and garlic bread was burnt. All three meals were sent back. The only good thing was we refused to pay for them. Thoroughly spoilt the evening. Will not be going back again.

Booked for midweek lunch and was surprised at how many people were eating here. It was a truly miserable wet day but the fire was on and the room was lovely and warm . We were amazed at the varied menu . We had duck, chicken pie and lasagne ...we swapped potatoes for chips with no problem and all meals were thoroughly enjoyed . They were very large portions so sadly no room for dessert , next time we may opt for a smaller main to try to dessert menu. The staff were very friendly and we will definitely return .

Enjoyed two lovely dinners with friends in this traditional English pub. Excellent food. Beautiful steaks, great pies and succulent venison. All worth a try. The staff in the Hinton Arms is outstanding and kind.

My family arranged a meal at this Pub after we had visited Nat Trust Hinton Ampner, it is less than a mile away. It was my birthday treat and it was certainly that. I had Liver and Bacon, absolutely brilliant all five of us enjoyed the meal immensely. Thanks to all the lovely staff.

Having visited Hinton Ampner a National Trust House, (well worth a visit) we called into the Hinton Arms for a drink. The pub look full but we took a chance to see if they had a table for two. Luckily a table became vacant and we enjoyed a great lunch. The roast lamb was excellent and the fish pie was equally as good. Both were very generous portions. Price was on the high side for a pub meal but well worth the money. A great find;-We will be visiting again.

Arived at the pub and settled in. Soon the place was very busy, but the staff copped well. Drinks were ordered then came the interesting part as we asked for the free from menu which was given to us and we were suprised how good it was. All orders taken, plenty of drinks to hand. The young staff entertained us and the food arived. Everything was excellent and they coped well with the variations of the orders. Fantastic night had by all

So we live up the road in Bramdean and we wanted to check out the Hinton Arms so there were 5 of us booked in at 12 on a Sunday. The selection was fantastic almost spoilt for choice and the food was lovely and plentiful! We were made to feel welcome the place is bigger than I thought it is set up for families which is great!! The prices are very reasonable not over priced but still good quality produce! I loved the Christmas menu and decorations as well. We had a lovely time and look forward to going back.

Food was OK me and my sister in law are gluten so the menu wasn't great especially deserts. Staff need a bit of training in what gluten free means as one member of staff thought that roast potatoes had gluten in and was told I could have new potatoes. So many people these days are gluten free not by choice. If the staff are knowledgeable about gluten free it gives customers confidence in eating here and returning. I am a waitress myself and have been for over 30years so I no you could really benefit from some customer service training. Won't be rushing back

Visit hear a lot, food is very generous and you won’t go hungry. Staff very pleasant, drinks order taken in timely fashion, have a special board as well as menu. Lots to choose from there were 6 of us and all had different meals. The food is great however last two visits been a big gap between ordering and when the food comes out. Most dishes are cooked from scratch so expect to wait but last two times one was over an hour and this week at least 45 minutes. I understand it can get busy but tell us there is an issue we can make a design ourselves if we want to wait or go somewhere else.

Called in our way back from Brighton - needing lunch/something quick. It was busy but the waitresses found us a table. Had the lamb hock with veg and a jacket potato - menu was huge, as were the portions. Something for everyone, would say its good basic pub food. Place was clean, friendly and staff were lovely. Would definitely call in again if passing. Only downside was someone changing a baby's nappy in full view, in the car park. Not nice.

This was an evening meal stop when we were walking the South Downs Way. Our B&B; called and booked for us, as it was Saturday Night and therefore busy, but as the weather was good we sat in the garden (inside was full.) The food was lovely. Pub standards but really well executed and lavish portions. Service friendly, good choice of wine by the glass as well. Desserts nice too.

If you have a good appetite and like a large varied menu then this would be a good bet. I booked a lunchtime table for a friends lunch and we both ordered off the vegan and vegetarian menu- both meals were a generous helping, so much so the waitress offered a 'doggie bag' for my friend. The food was delicious, the setting in the garden was delightful and the service was good.

Charming countryside pub with garden area - dog friendly. We'd heard good things about the food and the Hinton delivered. Three on our table loved the liver and bacon and mash, the other was happy trying to finish the huge pork Schnitzel and the other the creamy mash topped, generously filled Fish Pie. Satisfied smiles and bellies all round - almost fit to burst (although that might have had something to do with the post hike beers). Go visit.

Good things: Welcoming and attentive staff. Lots of character. Good pub grub style menu. Food well cooked. Had the schnitzel which was very good. .....although misspelt on the board. ... Only failing was the beer which was....okay. But I'd return.

We called in as we were passing. A really nice pub with a decent menu and welcoming staff. Even though it was only a Tuesday lunchtime, it was busy which is a good sign. All three of our meals were superb: good solid food with generous portions. We had venison steak, lamb shank and a rack of ribs. Didn’t try any beers but looked like they had a decent selection. Highly recommended.

A disappointing roast today! We went to The Hinton Arms in Alresford. We had the beef, pork and the nut roast. They all come with Yorkshire pudding and a selection of vegetables. The beef was fatty and chewy, the vegetables were soggy and overcooked, my roast potatoes were undercooked and the Yorkshire pudding was shop bought. The pork didn’t go down too well either. The gravy was ok and the vegetarian in our group was happy with the nut roast. Access is pretty poor, if you have limited mobility you’ll be okay but wheelchair users would find this place impossible. There are no disabled parking spaces and no disabled loo the entrance to the pub is quite small too so it would be very challenging. The service was okay and the venue is okay but we thought it was overpriced at £14.00. On a positive note they do have a lot of gluten free options on the menu.

Stopped for a drink and light lunch snack. The place was heaving (always a good sign) You are first hit with the stunning flowers everywhere, it's well worth going out of your way just to see them. We sat outside as it was a nice day. Food / drinks and service all OK. 9/10

We popped into this pleasant looking pub after having a walk at the local National Trust property. We both chose baguettes which came with chips. Mine was fine - Brie and bacon but the sausage and onion baguette was spoilt by a low quality sausage. The pub is a strange place offering Moules and chips or duck breast in sauce as well as filled baguettes. The menu certainly offers variety but I wonder what their quality would be like.

Had lunch here on a busy Friday. There was a comprehensive menu and a good "Specials" board, from which we both chose. My wife had a whole trout, which she usually loves, but the flavour was not as she expected, and the new potatoes were peeled and unbuttered, so rather uninteresting. I had partridge in a bacon and mushroom casserole, which had a very nice flavour, though the partridge itself was rather overcooked so the breast was very dry and heavy to eat. The vegetables were also overcooked. Service, however, was very good.

Had my wife and I not been treated to lunch by our friends, I would have sent my meal back. We waited 70 minutes from ordering to service. The young woman serving us was very pleasant and apologetic but it was clearly out of her hands. I ordered fish and chips with mushy peas. The fish was a good size portion but seriously overcooked to the extent that it was dry and even chewy in parts and the batter verging on the burnt in places. My wife had liver and bacon and enjoyed it.

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

Would love to be able to recommend The Cricketers but it was possibly the worst |Sunday Lunch we've ever had. Food was poor , service mediocre and cost extortionate. They even put a 12.5% sevice charge on the already expensive bill. To top it all one of our family who ate the pork had a very upset stomach .
