Spent the day going round Windsor Castle and came out of the gate and found this place. We sat outside as the weather was lovely - even in April the sun was lovely. We ordered fish & chips twice, two pots of tea and a Diet Pepsi. Drinks arrived very quickly and the food not to long afterwards. Super fresh, piping hot, with a large pot of tartar sauce. The fish was really fresh and super tasty, with crisp batter and no bones or nasty skin. Chips were piping hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Portion size is medium but you can order large for an additional charge. Accoutrements are in a separate tray. Really enjoyed it but maybe a round of bread & butter would have been the cherry on top. Slightly above normal prices but it's a tourist hotspot so we could understand. Service was prompt & polite. Highly recommend.

My mom and I were walking in the town of Windsor and wanted to have a roast for mid day break and stopped in here for a bite to eat and to rest. There are 2 steps up to enter. Unsure if handicap access. The beer was good, the roast was quite good. Service was great. There was also outdoor seating. Reasonable prices. Clean restrooms however it is a large step up to get into the ladies room so if you have trouble with steps this is not the restroom to use. Did not see handicap accessible restroom.

Best fish and chips ever in Berkshire. Fish flaky, cooked to perfection and huge in size. Chips are as good as one can get. Crispy from outside and soft from inside. Ambiance and staff very nice and friendly. Oh the dip is so yummy that my partner finished my dip with fingers. Worth every penny and will come again.

One of the worst fish and chips that I've ever had. Fish was not tasty and the fries were awful....the oil definitely needed to be changed as they were stale tasting and not crispy at all. Poor ambience and furniture. No one came over to see how our meal was. Was told gelato was 2 quid but was charged 2.50 for it.

We had a great day at Windsor but wanted to get away from the crowds and noise before going back to London. We were also starved after walking all morning. Church Street looked promising as there were restaurants and fewer people. A personable waiter at Ye Old Kings Head stopped us and asked if we would like lunch. We laughed , said yes,and were seated outside. Both of us had a perfect meal of fish and chips. Our waiter and a waitress were attentive and brought us extra tarter sauce and drink refill. We had a good chat, good meal and good experience. Would highly recommend Ye Old Kings Head. ( Good fish and chips in London was hard to find- surprised.)

Simple menu of fish, burgers, hot dogs and chips. Also sells Italian gelato at £6 for 3 scoops which is a bit steep for a chippy. Fish and chips was good but portion was very small for £9, nice generous portion of tartare sauce, burger wasn't very good quality, hot dogs ok., chips nicely cooked. Far better places to eat in town. Beware they only accept cash.

After visiting the castle with my family we went down church street which is directly opposite the castle after finishing the tour. We were all hungry and we were not sure what we wished to eat. We passed a few shops and came across castle cod which is a very deceptive looking shop. We were approached by a very pleasant lady who simply sad " we sell the best freshly made fish&chips" with a big smile she opened the door. We were handed the menu which was in truth a very simple menu however that didn't matter as we could not wait to eat the fish&chips ,our order was taken and we were advised that the fish&chips were made to order therefore they would take a few minutes to arrive .while we were waiting we were told about the history of this place which was very informative. The fish&chips arrived with homemade tatar sauce and was perfectly cooked with crispy batter which was the best We had eaten along with the chips ,we all enjoyed.. We went to pay and we saw a selection of Italian gelato so we had a scoop each and I must say that it is the same I usually buy back home . BRAVO Sono fiera di vedere il nostro gelato essere famoso qui. I was surprised that after all we had the bill was reasonable and no service charge. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Definitely we'll be back

There's a side street with a view of the castle, this street is cobbled and filled with little cafe style restaurants serving various fair. We chose Chips (fussy children) and so the Nags Head it was. The proprietor was very friendly and attentive, taking our order and returning with our food. The fish was lovely, with a light batter rather than the thick crust often received from a more traditional chippy. The prices were steep for what you were eating, but taking into account the location and view it's easy to accept. My wife would have appreciated a larger portion of mushy peas though!

I've known this place and it's varying incarnations for many years as I was born in Eton. It's in a great location on this pedestrianized walkway next to the bridge over the Thames between Eton and Windsor at the foot of castle hill. In recent years the lively pubs have moved more to restaurants. On my most recent visit I was so pleased to see how popular it still is. It really is a nice place. Had a late lunch here after visiting Windsor Castle. Conveniently located in a small street opposite, and chose this one, rather than the other cafes there, due to the warm, cheerful greeting from staff. Sat outside and had the beer battered cod, chips and salad, followed by Bramley apple pie, coffee and mango juice. All thoroughly delicious and promptly served. Best crispy battered cod I had in London. After a long day at the castle, it was great to find this gem of a spot for lunch, directly across from the Castle on a small pedestrain street. Myself and my wife had been spending a week in England, and it always nice to discover a restaurant that exceeds one's expectations. We were warmly greeted on arrivals and settled on a table outside in the sunshine ( we opted to enjoy the sun, although it might have been cooler inside). We both love fish - so my wife had the classic fish & chips ( which was fresh scampi) and I had the Atlantic Salmon. Both dishes came with generous sides and we chose a house red - Shiraz, which was exceptional. Desserts were great and we lingererd over Irish Coffee watching the world go by. Great service & food and a place to note.

It was a lovely sunny day so we sat outside. Lovely setting despite being sat so close to smokers. Waiter greeted us politely and proceeded to prepare the table for 4 people although there were only 2 of us! Ordered the ploughmans salad, that was on the specials menu. I think my 6 year old nephew could have cobbled up a better dish. Pork pie, very cheap product and tasted so. Apple chutney was just apple sauce out of a jar. Bread was stale. All for £9.95! Pfffft! I was starving so ate all but the bread. We complained and the manager on the day questioned why we were complaining as we'd eaten it. He said nobody else had complained about the food and said they'd had 60+ people previously served who we're happy. Very poorly addressed. If someone is not happily you endeavour to find out why and work to improve your service. If you want good quality food ..... Don't go here!

After a long day with the kids walking through Windsor exploring the Castle and the numerous local delights we decided to grab a bite to eat rather than cook late at home – not always ideal with hungry little ones! All were pleased and in agreement to try out Ye Olde King's Head. It was a lovely night, very welcoming – beer battered haddock and chips for all went down a treat in a very comfortable atmosphere. Kids loved the Tudor style (always nice when they can tell us about the history they’ve already learned), the small cobbled street to the pub right opoosite the Henry VIII’s gate in Windsor Castle. Prices were very reasonable and a solid choice of classic and local favourite dishes – like the salmon or fancy sausages and mash, period-influenced lamb shanks. Easily something for everyone – recommend it for families (like ours) who enjoy food!

My husband and I were looking forward to a lovely lunch in a beautiful setting on Friday 2nd November. We chose this place, set in a quaint little street and thought that the afternoon tea looked like good value. How wrong we were.We were seated by the waiter, who seemed inexperienced. As he left with our order, I tried to move the cutlery, but alas it was stuck to the plastic table mat. My husband had the same problem, we literally had to peel our cutlery away from the table, not a good start. Our plates arrived next. They were dirty, mine was covered in old jam, my husband's tea cup was also dirty.Just when we thought things couldn't get worse, afternoon tea arrived. One of the cream cakes was covered in mould, absolutely disgusting! I don't know what worried us more, the fact that the mould was there in the first place, or fact that they hadn't noticed and served it to us.We complained and the waiter tried to laugh it off, saying they'd only bought the cake the day before. He went into the kitchen to speak to the chef, then came back to us and offered to take a couple of quid off the bill. Then proceeded to say "I don't know what happened, we only bought them a couple of days ago." And tried to brush it off.We were insulted by the offer of 'a couple of quid' off the bill. It was an awful experience and we both felt sick for the rest of the day. Needless to say, we will NEVER go back there again. One to avoid.

We were lucky enough to stumble across Ye Olde King's Head and it fit the bill perfectly! It turns out the place has recently re-opened under new managemenr - I'd say they're doing a good job so far!The service was welcoming, the range of beers was good and the great food was reasonably priced. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere with gentle background music coming form the kitchen area and the building in lovely tudor style. And for history buffs, it was where the execution order with King Charles 1st was signed in 1648 by, among others, Oliver Cromwell with a copy of the original on the wall.I thoroughly recommend it.

Nice people, pretty location, but, to be honest, the beef in the Sunday roast, though sliced relatively thinly, was extremely chewy; too chewy to be enjoyable. The lamb was somewhat better, but nothing to get too excited about. The broccoli was cooked to the point of having a rather greyish appearance. The parsnips were tough, perhaps due to undercooking, although I'm not quite sure why. Am glad to hear that others have had a good experience, as this is certainly a spot where one would hope a restaurant would do well. This was our first time eating there, and we've been put off the notion of sampling another English Sunday roast any time soon.

Visited Ye Olde Kings Head in May 2012 and had a great experience. I don't believe any of the negative reviews actually ate at this restaurant! Especially some odd review on here about historical links to Shakespeare; I think they're confused, the restaurant had a copy of the death warrant for King Charles the First I believe, as far as I can remember???The menu has a great selection and presented us with the only problem of the day, deciding which of the dishes to choose from!!! First of all the starters were all a nice decent size, and tasted brilliant. I seriously recommend the prawn cocktail, it was substantial in size and was probably the best prawn cocktail I have ever eaten; and I'm a bit of a prawn cocktail fanatic. All of the other starters that the other members of our party had were also very good.Of the mains many of us ordered the Sunday roast, which I would eat again right now if presented to me! Plenty of meat, great roast potatoes, large yorkshire pudding, and plenty of yummy veg; Perfecto! You might need a large appetite to finish, but for me this is a good thing! Some of the other party members ordered the Lamb shank, which looked amazing. If you have room I would recommend the Eton Mess, it is very light but full of flavour. I also stole some of the apple crumble from someone else, and this was also very nice!Considering our party had quite a few people, the service was great, we couldn't fault it. Exactly the right amount of time between courses, and no pressure to keep buying drinks or clear us out the door when we were finished. We enjoyed our meal in a relaxed and professional environment. If you visit Windsor and want some real, traditional, professional British food, visit this restaurant. You'll be glad you did!

Between the 8 of us we all had different starters and mains and every single dish was delicious and served to a very high standard. We were given complimentary olives prior to our starter and complimentary still water (from a bottle) throughout the evening. We were also all allowed to sample the mead again complimentary. The staff new exactly what was in each dish and were able to advise my pregnant sister which dish would be best to meet her dietary needs. The beer and wine are served in traditional silverware and the staff were dressed in traditional clothing. The restaurant is very small so if you are planning on going in a group I would recommend that you pre book.Due to having 2 birhday celebrations we had birthday cakes so didnt get to sample the puddings but we have all planned our next visit as we are desperate to try the apple pear and rhubbard home made crumble. What was also nice is that you can see the chef in his kitchen and it is extremely clean and tidy. The only negative is that the toilets are up stairs but they are very clean and tidy. There is a function room upstairs for private hire. The restaurant has only been open 4 weeks but you would never know as the staff are very professional I really cannot believe the negative comments on this site and please try this little gem i can only think that the negative comments have been put on by the restaurants competitors.

They are quite rude & are un-aware of their behaviour. They provide food that sounds okay in parts, but what is delivered is absoulte rubbish. Along with service that is well below the level needed in a professional enviornment. It is different to host dinner parties at home & people tell you that you're a great host, then get the idea to invest in a restaurant, & provide professional service & well executed food to a high level that the public will accept paying for, it is an insult to the industry & the many professionals that live & breathe this industry.
