On a busy Sunday, four of us visited the White Oak for Sunday lunch. The food was absolutely amazing! I particularly enjoyed the sardine starter, which was part of the specials menu – a real standout. Although there was a minor issue during our visit, the team went above and beyond to address it, exceeding all expectations. Their handling of the situation was incredibly professional and demonstrated how much they truly value their customers.

So disappointed with Sunday lunch I know it's been taken over but the roast wasn't a patch on the last one .... roasties were overcooked too much fat on beef had to ask 3 times for extra gravy, service was terrible didnt even come back and check if everything was ok or if we needed anything else I had a latte which was lovely hot and nice coffee.... overall we wouldn't go back such a shame

A pleasant evening for my wife, myself and two good friends. An imaginative menu and the food was very well presented. The refurbishment scheduled for January should make the White Oak and even better place to eat. Thank you to the staff who were always on hand to help us.

Table for four for lunch mid-week. Reception and welcome excellent. Excellent plant based options and one attendee who had dietary requirements was well catered for. Vegetarian soup so tasty. Three courses each - very reasonable price for really good food. Apple and blackberry crumble and custard for dessert and two specific coffees. Would highly recommend.

A lovely upmarket pub worth traveling to. Our table had scallops, and soup to start with, both excellent, followed by fish & chips and cheese burger. We finished the meal with cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding, crumble, and coffee. A lovely lunch served by lovely staff. Thank you

We had Erin as our server and she made us feel very comfortable and made sure we had everything we needed as well as offered us additional parts of the menu which we didn’t realise we could do (bottomless sides with the roast dinners). The roast potatoes were very good and the pints which Ed poured for us was just as good. We will be back!

Having been to the White Oak many times previously under the old management, I was interested to see what the Sunday offering would be like. It’s clearly a different concept now, but still a great location and nice dining room / garden. The food itself was ok, the bottomless idea is great but it was difficult to order more as the staff weren’t very attentive. The quality of the beef wasn’t particularly good, quite chewy and a lot of gristle, the potatoes were good but the best part of the meal was the Yorkshire pudding, that was great. The wine list is fairly decent, I really enjoyed the wine I had. I do feel the service let the experience down, wasn’t particularly well organised, slow and not what you’d expect.

We were on a bike ride today and on the off chance popped in for a pint and some bar grub. It was super busy being the bank holiday but the bar staff were so accommodating and the Host Luke despite being rushed off his feet made us feel very welcome. I had the burger and my husband had fish and chips and the food was the best we’ve had in a long time. The atmosphere was brilliant and Leo and Jodie who where running the bar were a dynamic duo, super calm under pressure and worked like a well oiled machine. We said that one day when we move to Cookham this will be our local such a fabulous spontaneous find, thanks for being the highlight of our wedding anniversary Lara x

Needed some food that wasn’t with chips. We passed the white oak and stopped. We were greeted in a friendly manner by all the staff . We were shown to a table - comfortable seats and were asked if we would like drinks … cold tap water and orange juice and lemonade with ice and straw - lovely. The menu has many options but we both chose the chicken with squash, creamed corn and a sage gravy with sides of new potatoes and peas & carrots - it all tastes amazing- full of flavour. We had no room for desserts - but next time. It was a Thursday evening and although it packed had quite a few people dining. We will be back to try the Sunday lunch.

Food was very good and I would definitely recommend this place for a Sunday roast. The desserts we tried were also exceptional. Cocktails - not so good. Tasted too watery. Biggest issue was the waiting staff. Completely oblivious to customers, would all hang out around the bar so quite difficult to flag one down. Also, out waitress, bless her, very polite. Completely clueless. Better training needed and they will surely be equally exceptional.

We visited as a family with a some children and their friends and arrived early around noon before the pub was busy. 2 of the girls were singing and playing patty cake while they waited for their food. Although they were singing and laughing a little loudly out of excitement they were not particularly loud, and definitely not louder than groups of adults chatting and laughing. One of the staff came over and shushed the girls and told them not to sing so loud. I was surprised as I genuinely did not think they were very loud at all and didn't seem to be bothering other guests, all of whom were quite spread out. I highly doubt if a group of adults were laughing at the same volume they would have been shushed. It's a shame as we enjoyed the food but didn't find it very family friendly for this reason, and didn't find the service in general (beyond our waiters) particularly friendly, so won't be back I'm afraid. Edit to respond to owner's reply: I understand the need to respond to a negative review to give the other side of the story, but I am a bit surprised by the stretching of the truth which I hope is more from a lapse in memory rather than anything intentional. Although we left politely smiling and saying thank you, there absolutely weren't handshakes or profuse thanking for a lovely meal in an "incredibly positive" way - I'm afraid this is only reserved for service we really enjoy, not ones that make us want to write a review immediately upon leaving after processing what happened. The inability to get the attention of the parents before directly shushing 7 year olds is also a little hard to believe as we made eye contact immediately as soon as he approached and watched the whole interaction, in the moment awkwardly supporting him and telling the kids to be quieter. It was only after he left that we felt like it was a bit unfair (the girls immediately stopped and looked embarrassed). The room very soon filled up as it got later and was significantly louder when it was filled with adult guests, so I believe this may have been an error in judgment but unfortunately one that coloured the experience and made us feel out of place which is feedback I hope is learned from.

What was once one of the best pubs around has unfortunately become very average. New management has come in and unfortunately the ambition to set themselves apart with the food offering seems to have disappeared. It is a real shame as what was once a shining light in the village, differentiated by a real step change in the food that was available is now gone and has been replaced by a small chain serving food of similar quality to that in the other pubs around. I am not sure what would make someone now choose the White Oak over The Crown or the Bel and Dragon. I was hoping they would come in and realise what the previous managers had done over the last 15 years and attempt to keep the same quality and ambition, including the Michelin Bib Gourmand but chats with the very friendly staff there seem to imply that this is not and will not be the case. We attended as they had just re-opened so the benefit of the doubt is needed but this is not the white oak of old by any stretch.

A group of cousins meeting up on a bi-annual basis to catch up over Sunday lunch and remember dearly departed parents, uncles and aunts. We booked for 9 of us and one of us on the day before had a fall and damaged her back so couldn't come. All was going swimmingly well...the venue was very nice, my roast beef was excellent, service was attentive and efficient. Then came the bill....we were charged a £10 'no-show' fee for the the cousin that couldn't attend (we all paid £10 deposits in advance). Well, i'm sorry we've just spend hundreds of pounds and one of our nine couldn't make it. We raised it with the manageress/owner who started arguing the point and then begrudginly conceded with 'only as a special exception, we will waive that". I'm sorry but leaves a sour taste. Deposits are there to rightfully protect from tables not turning up, not one person in a party of nine falling ill/lame who suddenly can't join and we should not have to feel meek and grateful for her waving £10. Had she said 'yes of course you don't have to pay that' then we would be returning every 6 months as we had all agreed to do before the bill arrived And now we won't. Bizarre customer service.

It's not the first time we have had the pleasure of taking lunch at the White Oak. We were delighted to see the car park was extremely full on Bank Holiday Saturday, though we were happily able to park. The thoughtfulness of the establishment was clear from that point onwards. Although patrons are encouraged to enter through the front door, it was politely suggested that customers with mobility issues might find an easier access route directly from the car park. So to the main event, the food was as always, absolutely delicious. The menu was well balanced and as fresh as could be. I do like the wine list. The service was spot on, and I congratulate management on their excellent staff. I look forward to coming back again and I will continue to recommend the White Oak to friends.

We had a table of 16 dining on the Lunch Menu. I had a Crab on Sourdough starter, fancy Hamburger as a main course and a Lemon Verbena cheesecake. Slightly pricy for my budget however the food was quite tasty. All the serving staff were marvellous, extremely friendly and very accomodating.

A wonderful pub serving top notch pub food. The steak was amazing (they obviously have a proper chef in the kitchen!) beautiful atmosphere, lovely engaging staff, beautiful setting in a lovely Berkshire village. Bravo.

At lunchtime, a busy traditional pub with great beer and very well-priced, home cooked food. Recently been taken over by landlady Sian, who was very welcoming, as were all the staff. The pub has been here for ever, but right now is as good as it has ever been and we need to try it out for an evening soon. Highly recommended!
