Quintessential English pub. Beams, fire, draught beer, friendliest of welcomes, restaurant or bar food, garden dining, open fire and comfortable rooms. Easy parking (free) and good connection to nearby A3. If eating in the restaurant make sure you book.

I got to say one of the worst meals I’ve had in a long time the fish cakes was that hot the steam bellowed out of them when I cut them in half and the outside was soggy not at all crispy they definitely was microwaved the prawn pil pil was way to spicy very disappointing the best part of the meal was the bread

If you want to visit a traditional Country Inn, with a lovely burning fire in the bar, a wonderful restaurant with great food and service then this is the place for you. We have often visited this venue following a wonderful country walk for a refreshment with bar food yet we decided we should visit for a restaurant dinner, B&B, all of which was exceptional. Fabulous food and wine, very classic environment with wonderful and friendly service - we could not fault it.

For years it was my favourite place to eat spending many birthdays and special occasions there. We hadn't been for a long time because of the pandemic but we went to celebrate my partners birthday. The starter was nice, whitebait. The mains sea bass and salmon were dry and bland, vegetables uninspiring. Whithies crispies had been replaced with boiled then fried new potatoes which wern't crispy at all. They had had the same old menu for years but the upside was they knew how to do everything on it exceptionally well. A lovely pub, but now overpriced £135 for what I could get anywhere for half the price.

This was our second visit to Withies Inn as we were so impressed first time round with the welcome and the efficient service, particularly as we had nor booked. As our second visit was for Sunday lunch I thought it wise to book in advance and thank goodness I did as it was full. Once again, we were welcomed immediately and shown to our table nicely tucked into a corner. My wife chose Lemon Sole which she said was perfect and I chose the Roast Beef which came with vegetables for us both. My beef was excellent but the Yorkshire pudding was chewy and I found the roast potatoes were over cooked. There was a good choice of vegetables which my wife found to be just right but to my taste they were definitely 'al dente'. For me the day was saved by apple crumble and custard for desert which was delicious.

The service was excellent. A member of our party had impaired vision and we were impressed by the consideration given to him by the staff. Nevertheless, one of the waitresses pressured us to order drinks, dessert, even after we asked for the bill. We came for lunch, it wasn't a special occasion, we wanted something simple. Sort it out and enjoy your work. Respect each and every customer and deliver excellence to succeed. Oh my god. Take an idyllic location, a historic and beautiful looking building, understaff it and treat your customers as an inconvenience rather than a pleasure, and you get the Withies. Everything exists for a joyous experience when you arrive, only to be dashed by a philistine-like approach to the most inconvenient of realities - blessed customers. The perspective has become cruelly distorted. From treasuring customer service and delivering a wonderful experience, the attitude appears to be one of seeing customers as lucky to have found, let alone be let through the doors of, The Withies. I'm sure the staff don't mean to be ignorant and intolerant. Maybe there are too few of them, or they've started to take the hype for granted, but come on Hugh - if anyone, let alone a grieving widow looking for a venue for a wake, is made to feel second-best and unwanted, you've got your priorities wrong. Were this the experience of one visit, I'd rise above it, but twice in 24 hours suggests some systemic and philosophical failings. Enjoy your work, enjoy your customers, treat them as royalty, and you can only succeed. The opposite is also true!

We used to go to The Withies regularly over the past 20 years (we lived in Compton) but moved away 2 years ago. Returning last week we were very disappointed at the change in atmosphere, quality of staff and overall experience. It began with us being refused a better choice of table (we had booked in advance) but later found the preferred table behind us was never occupied, so we felt that was an unnecessary refusal. Although the pub was very quiet, our order was not taken for 25 minutes until we had to call on the waitress to take it. Next is a small thing but it was one of the things that added to the lack of professionalism this once wonderful place used to guarantee: a single portion of cauliflower cheese was served in an otherwise empty, large triple-sectioned, metal pan which filled up our small table, which was plain daft. The quality of the food was ok but not to the standard we used to find here. Overall the table service was a charmless shadow of its former self, so we cut the visit short and declined both pudding and coffee as we felt uncomfortable and asked for the bill. That did not arrive until a second call 15 minutes later. And then again no-one came to our table to let us pay. This used to be an upmarket restaurant in every sense and we would never have to go to the bar to have to pay. Again we were ignored and had to ask again to actually pay. I can see some recent reviews have been good and some not so. We clearly picked a bad day.

The roast chicken and chips was bland. We booked this very old and expensive restaurant for a special occasion and left bitterly disappointed. Service was not offered - we had to find someone to direct us to a table and then find someone to take our order. One waitress spent half an hour (sic) chatting with the next table. No one was apparently in charge.
