The Percy Arms in Guildford

This is a great place to stay - the rooms are comfortable, everything works and the food is very good. Hosts are very welcoming and we enjoyed our stay. Also, only 30 minutes from RHS Wisley with an easy car journey.

Absolutely amazing stay. Everything perfect: food, drink, hospitality, ambience. Couldn’t recommend higher. Definitely worth a stay…and have a steak 😊

We stayed in a suite for the night and it was lovely! Spacious room with a roll top bath , good tea/ coffee tray and quality toiletries. We ate in the pub for our evening meal. My husband chose his steak from the chiller and said it was absolutely delish! The lamb Bunny chow was also very good . Good portion sizes and fairly priced! Would return for the food and the rooms! All the staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble - a 5 star service ! Good location if you travelling too / from Guildford. The following day we went to Dunsfold for a race day - this wasn’t too far from the Percy Arms either so great for us! Would return and recommend!

I came for a lunch with my family and we all had superb food. The staff were polite and we had great service. Fully recommended.

Mother’s Day treat, such a lovely meal, will come again! The service from our waitress was first class, it was so busy and nothing was too much trouble. The roast was amazing with such lovely choices of meat. We had an accidental pepper pot spillage on our table and a new meal was offered straight away. We can’t wait to bring the rest of our family here!

Debra was our waitress today during Mother’s Day, she was friendly and helpful, although I could see how tired she was after her long day. Food was ok, not amazing to be honest, my husband got a roast, the beef was too difficult to eat and the pork was hard to chew as well. I got fish and was nice, although the “crunchy potatoes” were just boiled and only two pieces of broccoli in my plate. Pudding portion was tiny and expensive too 7£ for two fingers of pecan cake. We enjoyed our stay with our little one in general, I guess the day wasn’t the best one to try this pub. We got a free meal for next time. Hopefully we will go when the day is not too busy and the staff is more rested.

Such a lovely place with great staff!

Me and my husband came here after he went here to service their fire alarms and told me how lovely the place was, so we gave it a try and was not disappointed. From the moment you arrive you are greeted by someone who then showed us to our room, we had the best room there with a big shower and a bath in the room with the bed. We then went downstairs for a few drinks and then went upstairs where we both decided we wanted to try the bath (we only have a shower at home) but there was no hot water, my husband went downstairs to tell them and they rebooted the boiler and told us to give it a try abit later. We went back downstairs for a few more drinks and then went and had dinner and OMG the food was amazing, we both went with the half a rack of ribs and 10oz rump steak with sweet potato fries and asked for a fried egg on top, we also had onion rings and a sauce called Monkeygland sauce which is a South African sauce (it was the best sauce I’ve tried) when they brought the food out it was huge, I would loved to have seen the full rack of ribs cos ours was massive and we couldn’t finish it. We then went back to our room and finally had our bath and went to bed. We had a good nights sleep, my only fault was the pillows, they were abit too soft for us but still slept good. We then went downstairs for breakfast, a full English which again was good. All the staff are very nice and polite, thankyou to the waitress who brought my husband some water after he choked on a piece of steak and I jumped up to hit his back. We will definitely be returning the food is Amazing

Absolutely amazing place we booked room 4 which was there best room for 1 night, room brilliant, the staff are polite and really helpful we booked dinner and had the ribs and rump combo this was delicious and the monkey gland sauce was tasty,, breakfast spot on as well,, definitely gonna come back,,, best place iv stayed,, really worth going even just for the food..

Food superb, service poor, our table was booked at 7pm, felt rushed to leave, waitress miserable. When we paid didn’t see a soul after just walked out, seemed like everyone had gone home. Won’t be rushing back

Went there recently for a birthday meal. Amazing and delicious food, the sharing platter had everything you need. The steaks are delicious too. The staff were fantastic in their service and making the overall experience very enjoyable, cannot recommend higher.

We chose to eat here based on the menu having a couple of items, a bit different to the norm. So glad we did, we shared Bobotie and bunny chow and became big fans of South African style food. Really generous portion of tender lamb chunks, lovely staff, great atmosphere. Very popular spot and they seem really well geared up for this with brisk attentive service. Wish we had a pub near us of this standard!

The Percy Arms is such a lovely pub/restaurant. I have been many times and it never disappoints. This was my partner's first time here, he's British so I wanted him to try some of the South African cuisine on offer. For starters he had the boerewors (South African speciality sausage) and biltong and I had the pork belly bites. The mains he had the bobotie, a traditional South African mince dish flavoured with Cape Malay spices, served with rice and Mrs Balls chutney. I had the rib-eye steak which is always perfectly cooked medium rare to my liking, just out of this world. We ended our meals on another high, the Dom Pedros, described as adult milkshakes with amarula liqueur. We've been back since for dinner but also on a Sunday for the carvery which is great value. One small thing which lets down the carvery for us (and we've been twice), is that the vegetables are never cooked enough, still practically raw, even the cauliflower cheese was too hard. If the veggies are cooked as well as the meats and everything else, we would go back for the Sunday carvery, but we'd always be back for dinner on a Saturday night.

From start to finish, everything about our stay was perfect. The room was beautifully designed, spacious, and had everything we could possibly need for a luxurious getaway. The big roll-top bath in the room was a stunning touch, perfect for a relaxing soak. The shower room was huge, modern, and immaculate. The bed was absolutely massive and incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. To top it all off, the large TV made winding down in the evening even better. The food was just as impressive as the room. The traditional South African dishes were absolutely amazing—full of flavor and beautifully prepared. Breakfast was also fantastic, with a great selection to start the day off right. Every detail was well thought out, making our stay nothing short of exceptional. We can’t wait to come back!

We stayed here for one night en route to a mini break. The early check in time of 2pm was useful though the hotels heating system did not kick in until later - not so great on a cold day. The hotel manager was helpful and said he would boost this whilst we went for a walk. The shower was also unfortunately cold. The staff team did their best to solve this but it clearly needed a plumber. Thankfully there was a bath - with hot water! The meal in the evening was delicious and the pub was busy so clearly popular. Our sleep in Room 5 - one of the rooms with a deep soaking bath was horrendous. The ventilation system for the kitchen below was left on all night - and was not a quiet sound you could ignore. I tried calling the emergency numbers. One rang and I left a message and the other was not in service. I spoke to the manager/owner in the morning who responded to the complaint by offering to refund the room. Not sure I needed to hear this would come out of the chefs wages as he has left the ventilation on. A simple, “we are very sorry and will of course refund you” would have sufficed. Keep the irritation of a situation for the staff team - or better still why not find a solution to the problem which does rely on humans who might be tired after a long shift!

As a family, we love it here - especially for a Sunday get together. We recently celebrated a birthday with family here and staff went above and beyond to make the event extra special. A very well organised restaurant with a busy feel and a friendly manner. The carvery is generous and has everything you would want. The vegetables, though, can get a bit tired after a while on the buffet. They found us a place for two near the bar, despite being fully booked. They find just the right note between friendliness and professionalism. Excellent.

The service was excellent. We had a large round table just outside the kitchen so a lot off staff passing. The staff were friendly and obliging but the Gnocchi was described as tasteless . The ribs were amazing

We came here for a meal only. I’ve used it off and on for years. At weekends it is very busy and it has a decent garden so in the summer is a hot spot for families, cyclists and walkers. They specialise in meat and have a number of interesting and tasty South African dishes. There is great walking nearby in the hills or on neighbouring Blackheath

Spent the evening here yesterday (Friday) and was really pleased with the experience. I enquired about the porterhouse steak and was shown to an area where I could choose what I wanted before it was cooked. The result was absolutely fantastic! A juicy, tender and tasty steak served with a peppercorn sauce, it came with fries and I added some onion rings. Everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will be returning in the future. I went to a very disappointing ‘steak night’ at the Gomshall Mill a little while ago, the Percy Arms is the place to go if you are looking for something special in a steak. Great place to eat.

Another lovely meal at this pub. Meat always top notch and always happy to be served by Nirem who is always the most welcoming waiter.

Always lovely food and staff super friendly, great atmosphere

Met our son for lunch on a Thursday. We were persuaded to have the Porterhouse steak between us at a cost of £48, only supposed to be a light lunch as eating out that evening, but were sold it well, so agreed. Were advised to also have a South African platter to accompany the steak which was quite extravagant. Food was good, but overall an expensive lunch at £85 for 3 of us, felt a bit pressured, but our waiter Naren was very hospitable and enthusiastic so we went along with his suggestions. Quiet pub, great service, food enjoyable but a bit heavy for what was supposed to be a light lunch.

It’s always a treat dining in this place. Very cozy atmosphere and food is top class. Much thanks to Naren for giving the family a 5 star service last holidays.

Average pub food at high prices in a fairly atmosphere-less environment. I asked if the baked Camembert came with chutney, was told it did but it instead came with a horrible sweet drizzle, burger was below average. We won’t be coming back and I can’t understand the high rating

Lovely pub, staff are friendly and the food is amazing.

How disappointing. We were 14 people, all SAffers, wanting to support a pub that served SA food. Our waiter, Darren, was superb. The service waiting time was good. However, at least 40% of us were disappointed with our meals. Two of us ordered Trinchados, which had, surprisingly, few bits of meat. . Add to that, 5 of the ladies ordered Dom Pedros. They brought to the attention of the wait staff, that they were not happy with the taste of the Dom.Pedros. Enter Shane, the General Manager. He was fairly aggressive towards the ladies at the table (all between their 60's and 70's) which was unnecessary. He could have explained that his recipe was different to what the ladies were used to. Personally, when paying for my bill, I mentioned the Trinchado, which I found to be very substandard. Once again Shane was aggressively defensive,when I gave him my reasons for finding the dish underwhelming. Having spent more than 20 years in the service industry, I could find no redeeming qualities in Shane's treatment of the people at our table. What a shame. The establishment is lovely, and our experience should have been quite different.

Fitted us in with 2 dogs and baby very well. Great food!

Great food with a South African twist

We booked The Percy Arms for our Christmas Party. Organising the booking and orders for our very large group was stress free. On the night the area we were in was perfect, the staff were warm, friendly, very efficient and made us feel very welcome. The food was lovely. Settling the bill was very quick and easy. I cannot praise the team enough, and they have definitely won new customers going forwards.

Took potluck booking a table here mainly due to location as our group were travelling from different parts of Hampshire and Surrey. What a stroke of luck.Timely communication.Personable helpful staff who delivered great service despite having a full restaurant.All the food (10 diners at our table)arrived hot and at the same time and every plate not only looked splendid but was delicious. Can’t praise then enough.

What an absolute gem! I was staying for business and didn't arrive until late. I was welcomed by smiley and incredibly helpful staff. After a quick checking in process, I was taken to an exsquisite room beautifully appointed. I slept like a log in a big and truly comfortable bed. Breakfast was hot and tasty. I would definitely stay here again. Why stay in a large, impersonal corporate hotel, when you can stay here. Highly recommended!

Lovely Sunday lunch with family

Rooms are beautiful and clean, Nahren was very helpful and polite, very very good service. Definitely would stay again. Very impressed.

We have visited the Percy Arms many times in the past and did so for a birthday celebration this evening once again. The service and quality of the food has been slipping over the past few years but tonight was the last straw. The waitresses were preoccupied with playing games with each other rather than attending to the guests, the empty plates were left on the tables for ages until we asked for them to be removed. This used to be the place where as South Africans we would take our friends for a proper South African experience. Such a pity to see it decline in the way it has. We have a group booking for 12 in the near future which we will now be cancelling. I hope the owners know what is happening to their once treasured establishment and do something to rectify it before it becomes too late. Really disappointed.

I love this place and come here regularly with a variety of friends and family. The food is great, all the staff are brilliant, the atmosphere is lovely. Also very reasonably priced given how good everything is.

You simply MUST go! One of the best meals I’ve had for ages. Meat was so great it melts in your mouth and the portion size was top notch. There’s also a butcher on site and some lovely drinks and desserts to choose from 😋 Praise the Lord for Tuesday Steak Night 🥩

Beautiful location, large garden - recently went here for a funeral gathering - then a few months later for a meal at the sunday carvery, which was amazing. Staff are fairly attentive (bar can be very busy though) - waiters and table service staff were brilliant, friendly and very accommodating, food was excellent and good value for the quantity, quality & selection of meats There are many carvery and roast options around - but give it a chance and you won't be disappointed - sides were unlimited and the meat was brilliant.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Great carvery for a reasonable price, definitely worth it for the quality. Would absolutely recommend if you're looking for a good Sunday Roast - just make sure you book because it was busy!

This is a tremendous pub with wonderful rooms. We held a fund-raising wine tasting evening event, with 50+ guests, and the whole pub team were superb - great and tasty canapes, superb service. We stayed overnight and the room was beautifully fitted out, very comfortable and warm. Breakfast the next day was excellent. Alfred and Janine have done such a fantastic job with this pub, we are fortunate to have it near us in the Surrey Hills - a perfect combination of South African and Surrey tastes, service and vibes.

Just stayed there for a couple of nights with my wife, the food and the room was fantastic, and what can I say about the staff, could not do enough for you and made you feel really really welcome, special mention to Alex who looked after us most of the weekend, my only fault was I was in a rush and I forgot to tip the staff, thank you very much Percy arms, I will be back.

Pretty disappointing experience overall. After searching for dog friendly pubs near guildford crematorium I rang the Percy Arms up to confirm that the online information was still correct and was told yep, we open at (whatever time it was I can't remember) and dogs are still allowed. Perfect. On arrival we were quite sternly questioned "Did you book" which took me by surprise. I happily would have if told it was necessary, we did get sat down but felt like we were intruding. Service felt rather all over the place and disorganised. Someone came to take our order before I had to point out we had no menus to choose from. I ordered Eggs Benedict and my partner ordered toast and jam. Both of which were very sparse in appearance and not worth the price in my opinion, although what little I did have, tasted good. When one of our party arrived, dog in tow, he was then informed he could only stay in the bar area, which meant we had to rush down our breakfast so that we could join him. Again something that could have been explained on the phone previously. While it was a nice location and very convenient for the crematorium, it is not somewhere I will be visiting again sadly.

Lovely stay at The Percy Arms, for my birthday. Fantastic, friendly service which we couldn't fault. The food was very tasty, fillet steak was particularly good and the burnt basque cheesecake was delicious. The room was pleasant and nicely decorated, though it was quite loud with the hallway door to the bar/restaurant being propped open until closing time. There were a couple of bulbs out in the bathroom, the mirror light being an issue as there was no other suitable well lit mirror to apply makeup. The Nespresso machine needs a good clean, three cycles with just water and it was still brown and had coffee grounds in. A little welcome pack, with local info, in the room would be really nice. Breakfast was excellent, recommend the South African full breakfast.

We had the Sunday Carvery & the food was delicious but was not very hot which spoilt it The service was poor extremely slow, when asking for the bill it appeared the waitress forgot & we had to ask someone else. Would have expected better having spent £260

Such a great restaurant. Food amazing. Staff always so kind and happy and a brilliant area for kids to play. Our baby group have come back time and time again and will continue for a long time to come! Thanks in particular with our latest visit to Darren. Attention to detail was first class, thank you :-)

Really accommodating staff, food outstanding and good value for money. We were originally seated in the main restaurant (lovely atmosphere) but it was too loud for my Dad’s tinnitus, the waiter kindly moved us to the only other available table they had in the bar area, which was much quieter and perfect for our needs. Our waitress was really good fun, she made us laugh a lot and it made for a memorable evening! Definitely will be coming back!

A Tuesday steak night at the Percey is always a great way of hooking up with mates every now and again. Especially groups of mates. We all order differently. Must be so tedious for the staff. But always great service. Great food. And a new winter menu to explore. Sunday carvery is always epic.

Stopped here after visiting the set of BBC's Ghosts which is 15 mins drive away, the room was fantastic, the staff were friendly, Spent time chatting with the owner who was lovely, There is a South African theme to the place which was really nice, the food was spot on, including the full english breakfast (south African breakfast was an option)

The perfect pub for a family party. Well organised, with a good sized function room and safe play facilities for the children, Delicious food for every taste at a very reasonable price per head. Brilliant staff, easy to plan, delivered a lovely experience for 25 adults and 20 Children. Thank you very much for a great day.

Had an excellent lunch with attentive service however the disabled toilet is only accessible from the car park fire door as there are several steps between the main entrance and the lower ground floor where it is situated. There are toilets at the other end but they have several steps also. It's such a shame as it serves excellent food and wines but for those who can't do steps it is a major issue

The food was ok b but the service was a bit slow and although my fish was nice it was really really salty and my relative said that his curry was strange instead of naan bread they put ordinary slice of bread with curry other than that though it was very good

Had my wife's 50th here. Was absolutely amazing, the location is stunning, food very delicious and our host Darren was incredible. He did everything to make our experience wonderful and was full of joy and life. Can't recommend this place enough.

I had my 40th birthday celebration here. It was amazing! The space was fantastic and service impeccable. Naran (Darren) was fantastic throughout the event, nothing was too much and he was very attentive. Food and dessert were delicious. The play area outside was perfect for keeping the kids occupied. 2024: the management now seem hot on it. Great food, good selection of wine, good service. 2017:Great fun with kids in the garden, really good south African food and a great wine menu. I am sure it is the Londoner in me, but the younger staff seem a little too relaxed when you are waiting at the bar.

A cozy pub/restaurant in a small village on a quite busy route. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and more than enough. Reservations are important. Parking free.

We met friends at the restaurant and we had the most fabulous lunch. The food was beautifully prepared and very tasty. Every dish we ordered was lovely. The Bunny chow and the Bobotie were made to perfection. We had a delightful host Darin who was up to speed with all our requests and made us feel very welcome. Service was fantastic. Walked 5 miles from Guildford on foot to get there...delightful and very well managed

We had an excellent birthday roast lunch at The Percy Arms, Childworth yesterday. The service was just right - thanks Debs. And the roast meat was percent - thank you the friendly chef. It was excellent value and the price of drinks was not bad either.

Customer service is non existent. Not a welcoming environment on arrival or duration of the visit. Argumentative staff with a horrible attitude and no experience or training in hospitality. Starters were great, mains were a huge let down. Would not visit again. ESPECIALLY for the price.

Starters were lovely. For mains the ribs were overcooked as well as the two venison burgers. Service was good and lovely location.

Went for a dinner with family for a taste of home. Food and service both great, had a good steak.

Second visit to The Percy Arms. Ordered the half rack of ribs and rump steak combo. Ribs were great and more like a whole rack. The steak was very disappointing though. Had to take it back as it was nicely charred on the outside but completely purple inside. I couldn’t even cut into it, it was so raw. I like rare steak but when I physically can’t eat it because it’s so purple and tough, real shame. The staff were not overly helpful or apologetic but cooked it some more. When it came back it was marginally more cooked to the point I could just about eat most of it. Real disappointment after my last visit and considering it cost almost £40 for my meal.

Both had fantastic fillet steaks there today. They got it spot on as we both asked for different levels of cooking. Bith were spot on and served simultaneously. Great service and very friendly welcome. Topnotch in every respect.

Other reviewers haven't mentioned the excellent top-rated steaks. We came upon the Percy by accident but would have made a special trip just for the steak and surroundings...

Went for dinner with some friends. Food was ok but not great. But it was very busy and everything came quickly.

Amazing rooms, great pub. Close to the hills but way outside of the city. The perfect spot. Easy pop over to Guilford for even more pubs and restaurants.
