Great atmosphere and their own beer and cider were exceptional. Only issue was we were looking for a place to sit , as no one was seating customers when you arrive at the door and ended up in an area where we were not aware we had to pre book to sit. The waitress was very rude in chasing my family away from there, whilst we were busy bying beer. Maybe a good idea would be to have a reserved sign on the tables or just be more friendly when someone does make a mistake unknowingly. But I will go back again when in the area

Like a lot of others who have said here, their service is less than to be desired. I reserved the table for 2pm and was not given my table till 2:25pm and asked to have drinks when we were actually here to have food and we were hungry. Then the table next to us (that came after) got their starters and mains while we were waiting another 45 mins for mains (nothing special) only. Didn't stick around for dessert as I didn't want to wait another eternity for it.

Had an amazing evening at The White Horse. We stumbled upon it during a spontaneous detour and couldn't resist the charming vibes reminiscent of "The Holiday." It lived up to our expectations with its picturesque country pub atmosphere, friendly staff, and especially the delightful manageress who took great care of us. The food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend it! We'll definitely make a point to stop by again next time we're in the area. Truly a hidden gem worth discovering. Many thanks!

A friend and I decided to have lunch here a couple of Saturdays ago without a reservation. Upon arrival, the hostess informed us that unless we had a reservation, we couldn't eat here. Despite noticing a couple of empty tables, we respected their policy. However, after leaving and checking online, we found an available slot and booked up. We returned straightaway and were seated without issue. It left us wondering why the hostess didn't offer us a table when there was availability. The cherry on the top was being led to a back room totally filled with empty tables. If there was ample space, why were we turned away? Bad customer service, it just looked lazy. We had a nice meal, but it was an odd start..

Service was lovely and nice drinks. The food was really underwhelming. We both had the pie, and they were obviously frozen pies and frozen oven chips, which I could have done at home. The white horse is a lovely pub. We were served by Ashleigh and Duncan who were absolutely lovely and friendly and answered any questions we had about the area or the pub. The pub was used as a filming location for the film "The Holiday" with Jude Law and Cameron Diaz. It is also dog friendly which is great and our dog was made to feel welcome. The pub has a lovely cosy atmosphere where you feel right at home, and the drinks where reasonably priced too. After our initial visit we came back the next day for a roast and recommended by Ashleigh we had the slow cooked beef rib which was 10/10 and melted off the bone. 100% We would come back and visit again.

I have been using this pub for years , last night it was empty and obviously zero atmosphere, the staff didn't appear motivated and in formed me at 9.15 they were going to close early "as there's no point staying open" which I guess could be the reason for the lack of customers, bearing in mind it's month end and generally the public have just been paid, drove through Dorking on the way home and those pubs were doing ok ! Pity as this pub has such a deep history. One of the reasons could be the rediculous lighting, it's far to bright for a cosy country pub and completely unacceptable,we chose to sit on the high stools as it was the only reasonable seating arrangement which was under the over bearing lighting! Sorry but I won't be returning again until it changes pity as I use to like it.

Arrived at the pub on a Sunday afternoon around 5pm, (prime pub time I may add) pub was a mess with glasses stacked high on the bar and tables filthy. We took a seat in the restaurant on one of the few table but we’re told we would have to move to the bar area as the table was reserved but had no reserved sign. We cleared our own table in the bar area and could not find any menu’s. When asked at the bar we were told the pub is not accepting “walk ins” as they’re busy and low staff. We were also told we would have to wait over 10 minutes for a drink? A real shame as the pub had a great history and the food looked great. Shambolic organisation from the pub, with mediocre staff who seemed very overwhelmed and Un-welcoming. Management need to buck there ideas up.

Before I start, I have to say the wait staff are fabulous. Courteous, friendly and lovely, unfortunately the kitchen lets them down. We ordered the vegetarian Sunday roast (x3), a regular roast and a steak and ale pie for our party and waited a very long time for this to come out of the kitchen. Yes, it was a Sunday and the pub was busy, but I didn't expect to wait as long as we did. Disappointingly there were only two veggie options on the whole menu but as it was a Sunday, a roast is good for us. When they finally arrived, the plates (that were quite big) looked half empty. A Mushroom Wellington (delicious) a few vegetables and some incredibly dry potatoes. When the Turkey roast came out, the same size plate was heaving with food. It felt like us vegetarians were being punished with a child's portion! Like I say, the staff are truly wonderful but the food very disappointing.

Always nice to visit Shere before Christmas, it's lovely in the evening with lots of lights decorating the houses and chi chi shops. Wear sensible shoes though, heels don't mix well with uneven ground and zero street lighting. If you're a fan of The Holiday you should stop for a drink at The White Horse, you might be lucky enough to nab the exact table that Cameron Diaz and Jude Law Sat at. It's no fake orgasm table at Katz' deli but it's one to tick off the list. We opted for a meal in the cosy restaurant at the back. The food is decent bistro grub, although due to how busy it was (booking a must) there were some items off the menu that evening. The terrine starter I had tasty and not too filling, my boyfriend had the soup. We both chose the lasagna which was delicious and a very generous portion. No don't well pop in again next year. Maybe we'll finally get The Holiday table.

We were very excited to go to the pub in The Holiday and had high expectations. Once seated and drinks ordered we were told many things are not available. Our booking was at 6pm Kids starters were served on scolding hot plates (why!!?) with no warning. Kids don’t care about the temperature of plates! Their parents do when they could cause burns! Service was slow! The table next to us left due to lack of menu choices and speed of service . Food was average , when it arrived. Our waitress was lovely, but we did witness the attitude of a male employee, while he was advising another party (who had travelled some distance) that they only had 5 dishes available and no puddings! I can understand the guests annoyance! We tried to pay and get out of there asap but again that took ages. I would not recommend and will not be back. Sorry for the poor review, take note and get more and better trained staff. Also, ensure your kitchen is stocked adequately for the covers you intend to serve. How can you run out of all steaks and all puddings?

Leaving a 2 star review because we’ve been here many times before and it’s usually lovely but left very disappointed on this occasion. We always visit the pub at this time of year and try to get a seat in the bar area near the fire place for maximum Christmas ambience! All previous years we’ve been told the tables in the bar area can’t be reserved so we always turn up bang on opening time to try to nab our favourite table. This year we arrived at opening time and were told they were fully booked for breakfast as they had a group booking of 70 people with children and dogs. They advised the bar tables had been reserved for people with dogs. I asked if the bar tables would be free after this party had left at 11 and we were basically told that they were fully booked all day. Disappointing because we obviously would have booked had we known we could book a table at the bar but assuming we’d need to acquire a dog to do so! We did ring in advance to enquire about booking/opening times but you’re greeted with an automated robot and when you try to get through to a human nobody answers the phone. I think this pub could benefit from providing clear guidance on its website re booking and should answer their phones in future! If the bar tables can only be reserved by people with dogs I think this is a real shame.

Turned up for brunch just after opening time, pub was practically empty and lots of seats but noticed they were all "reserved." Spoke to one of the staff who told us there was a 70 person breakfast booking in the restaurant. This was fine as we only wanted to sit in the bar area and enquired about the "reserved" tables only to be told they're being held for customers with dogs who have booked. These tables are by the fire and realistically are the nicest tables in the pub so it's not exactly fair they're just blanket booked out! We asked when their booking was and the question was not answered, asked again and told "we're fully booked." We then went elsewhere for some breakfast and a walk. Popped our heads back in 90 minutes later and lo and behold the tables we asked about clearly hadn't been used and there were only a handful of customers in the bar area! We easily could have eaten in this time, it just seems the staff didn't want to be helpful. It's like if a table is reserved for any time (even 4pm) it's just reserved for the entire day! Phone service is woeful too, we phoned up the day before to ask about bookings/availability. There is a terrible automated robot, ask to speak to a human and it then dials you through....to no one, because the staff cannot be bothered to pick the phone up after 5 minutes of us sat on the line.

The history if this pub is very inviting, the expectation was high due to all the publicity around the pub being featured in The Holiday film. We had been here before and it was great! So, we booked online for the festive menu, only to arrive and be told that in fact the booking came through as a ‘normal booking’ and not the Christmas menu! Annoying, but that was fine we chose from the normal menu. The food was ok, very small portions – the fish and chips looked very much like a child’s portion with 8 chips! I question if anything was actually fresh - it was the sort of food you get from Bookers! The atmosphere was not what we expected for a cosy country pub, the beautiful fire in the back room wasn’t lit, the lights are bright enough to perform surgery! The eating area was full of kids and babies, I felt like I was in a crèche trying to have an evening meal. We did wish that we had stayed at the William Bray for dinner. The staff were very nice, although extremely understaffed so they were very overwhelmed with the number of guests coming in – it was chaos! Overall, a very poor experience and unfortunately, the four of us will not be returning anytime soon – what a shame as we live locally.

My Wife and I visited The White Horse in Shere on the evening of Saturday 2nd December 2023 for dinner and then again on the morning of Sunday December 3rd 2023 for brunch. We absolutely adore the beautiful 2006 Christmas movie 'The Holiday' and staying in Godalming and visiting Shere twice certainly didn't disappoint. Ashleigh and her amazing staff could not have been lovelier. The White Horse is an incredibly idyllic warm beautiful English country pub. The walls are littered with a plethora of historic references, dating back centuries accompanied by fascinating genuine artefacts. Those that have an affection for the movie 'The Holiday' will be left mesmerised. There is a beautiful tribute poster that is emphatically classy in it's subtle commemoration. You can easily notice where both Jude Law and Cameron Diaz were situated in the Pub scenes which leaves you a little star struck. The food was completely delectable on both occasions. The Chef & Brewer menu provides such a vast contrast of choices cooked to the very highest standard along with some gorgeous craft beers and ales. All the staff were beyond attentive and I reiterate could not have been more friendly. The pub provides such a warm, cozy feel about it with it's perfect lighting, central heating but in addition has roaring open fire places that compliment the sense of winter provided by the wondrous oak beams gently decorated for festive season. My only complaint is living in Essex it is such a long way to come because we would gladly make The White Horse our regular Pub & Restaurant of choice. Althugh we will most definitely be visiting again soon x x Thank you Ashleigh Greig & Linda (thanks for the starters) your Chef is amazing XX

Really disappointed with our visor as I've been here before and had been lovely , but was bringing friends here for Sunday lunch and it was awful, service was poor ..was given our Sunday dinner and waited 5 minutes for knife and forks after getting the food in which time food was rather cold. Wouldn't rush back , food was tasteless , trio roast we had and meat was awful and hardly any gravy .

We went on a Sunday and they only served roast dinners which is fine. They could only seat us in the garden for lunch. Luckily it wasn't too cold. Annoying wasps flying around the table which was not pleasant. Food was lovely and didn't take long to serve. My friends had dessert and that seemed tk have taken longer than the roast dinner.

A very typical British pub restaurant in a small town Shere. Very cosy atmosphere and can tell the locals will come here for some meals. My wife mentioned the food was very natural taste and tasty pretty healthy. Overall a good place to dine in.

The real ales here are always in tip top condition. Really friendly atmosphere and helpful bar staff. The food is also very good and reasonably priced.

We (group of 4) had a really lovely meal today (24/09/2023) at the White Horse. Despite being very busy everything seemed perfect from the quality of the food, friendly and attentive service, speed of service and atmosphere. Genuinely could not fault a single thing. Many thanks especially to the brilliant staff who could not have done a better job, (Sorry I did not learn all your names but we were welcomed and served by a brown-haired lady, a blonde lady and also Josh who was named on our receipt). All 3 were exemplary and I must also thank the kitchen staff for the fantastic food.

Our 1st visit to the White Horse pub in Shere today and was not disappointed. A warm welcome, lovely atmosphere and a great menu with plenty of options for either meat dishes and vegetarian and vegan diets. Audrey served us today and was an absolute delight, the best service we’ve received in a pub, she was happy, friendly and attentive and made time for a lovely chat after our meal. A credit to the team. Food was amazing! Compliments to the chef and kitchen staff. Starter - Creamy garlic mushrooms on bruschetta Main - Mixed grill. Mushroom and ale pie with roasted baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert - Hot drink with Cheesecake mini pud. Would highly recommend a visit here, especially for fans of the film “The Holiday” as this is the pub that features in the film. We will most definitely be back and look forward to a walk around this quaint place.

Stopped by for lunch today and loved it! Friendly people, great atmosphere, tremendous location, and my 10 oz ribeye was delicious. The menu looked interesting, too, with quite a few dishes you don't normally see at pubs. I'll be back!

As chain restaurants go, this has to be up there with the best. Food was exceptional, got a midweek offer with a very reasonable set price for three courses, and the venue itself is lovely... If only we weren't here on a mini holiday or we'd definitely be back

Came here on bank holiday Monday (28/08/23) and had to wait an hour and a half for food!! Shocking. There was only one lady behind the bar… totally understaffed.

Gentleman with tattoos, short hair and I believe is getting an Orca tattoo soon. Have to say, you provided the best service I've ever experienced in a pub before. You have great rapport with people, a positive attitude, always chill no matter the pressure but at the same time very professional about it. Also loved your recommendations and how observant you are to your surroundings. Sorry if I'm bigging you up too much, but I was just impressed how good you are at your job! Not many people often take the time to mention it these days, you definitely deserved this review! P.S: Hope that power cut wasn't too bad!

Fantastic experience at the White Horse last Friday, Lou was a brilliant host. She was so attentive and went out of her way to check in on us. Thank you Lou for all your help! The signature burger was incredible and would definitely recommend. Shere village is a must visit and so is the White Horse.
