Unfortunately I have to give a 1 star due to the rudest bar staff i’ve ever encountered at a bar. I asked the dark haired man in a blue shirt if they served hot chocolate (it was sooo cold!) and he blunty and abruptly replied ‘unfortunately not’ (which may not sound rude if you’re reading this, but I was so taken back by his response). He made us feel super awkward when we asked if there were any bar snacks. He absolutely ruined this experience as i’ve wanted to come to this pub for ages. I feel staff here need some basic customer service training (just be friendly!)

Popped in at nearly 3 pm on a Friday afternoon - seemed like a cosy spot! However, we then ordered drinks and were about to order food when we were told that we could only place an order in 20 minutes because the chef was too busy. We asked if we could just place an order now and said that we were happy to wait but were then told again that we could not order at all until the kitchen was quieter. I wish we had been told about the wait before we were seated, given menus and bought drinks - I think that would have been fairer to us especially since we had made it clear we were here for lunch. I’m afraid the service from the gentleman who told us this was also rather indifferent.

This is a great pub with friendly staff who are exceptionally hard working. From what I could see see one man was working the bar on a Sunday. I was sceptical at first thinking it might be a bit of a tourist trap with The Holiday being filmed here but the food was fantastic.

This pub felt about as welcoming as a locked door. It’s clearly a local haunt, and if you’re not a regular, expect some side-eyes and awkward silences. The atmosphere was colder than my pint, and the patrons gave off a ‘you don’t belong here’ vibe. If you’re after a friendly, inviting place, I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere—unless you enjoy feeling like you’ve crashed a family reunion uninvited. 2 out of 5.

Nestled in the gorgeous village of Shere, this is a great, dog friendly pub. Dining with dogs is allowed in the bar area and there is also a dog free dining room at the back of the pub. A scene from the Christmas favourite film 'The Holiday' was filmed in the bar area, just inside the entrance. The food and service are great. The village is a super place to spend a few hours, browsing and walking.

Sat in the bar area by a door was freezing. Radiator was off there was a small heater. Roast potatoes were appalling there were like fried and stale awful !!!! parsnip was rock hard couldnt even cut it. I judge a roast on the roasties and they was bad. Slow cooked beef was amazing, and the swede mash and nice you had all the sauces to go with it. Kids mac and cheese tiny. Garlic bread was cheap and Not good and so was the one pig in blanket for £2.99 I think. Kim behind the bar was lovely and good at her job The other pub at the top of the village the roast looked unbelievable will try that next time

We booked for a Sunday roast yesterday. The atmosphere is really cozy and the village is very pretty. However, the service wasn’t the best, a bit slow even though it wasn’t that busy at that time (12:15pm) and the staff was not really friendly. The food was horrible. The meat wasn’t roasted instead, it was boiled! The potatoes were probably cooked the day before ( if not even before) they were very hard and not crunchy at all. We have tried a lot of Sunday roasts and this was the worst by far. I am sorry to say that.

Was hoping for a lovely roast lunch and was sadly very disappointed. I don’t normally trust Greene King for quality food but hoped this would be better due to The Holiday crowds it attracts. The roast was one of the worst I’ve had, the potatoes were possibly out of the microwave?! Overcooked Yorkshire and beef. The lamb shepherds pie was inedible, as was the cauliflower cheese. Also had to return my glass of Shiraz that tasted like vinegar. Would definitely only get a pint and some crisps if stopping by this pub! Atmosphere is adorable - such a shame the quality is so poor.

Was really quite disappointed. Food was ok (although my meat was hot on the outside and cold ish on the inside); but the service was horrendous. I mentioned my meat was cold in the inside and the waitress wasn’t sure what to do. There was no apology, just a shrug, But the other waitress (I think possibly the manager), had so much attitude, and made you feel like you were an inconvenience being there. We would’ve stayed long but there was honestly a weird vibe and we didn’t feel welcome.

I was happy with my choice of food however two people in my party ordered the Garden Plot Medley and were disappointed it was cold - they were expecting it to be a hot meal - perhaps this could be more clear on the menu. The most disappointing thing was the Apple Tart dessert- this was hot but clearly just microwaved to heat. The pastry and apple were anemic and stodgy and not baked at all - it looked extremely unappetising. Also - the pub was very cold. We were sat directly in front of an old outside door which although closed, was very draughty. It’s disappointing that an old traditional pub with real fireplaces don’t have the fires lit on a winters day.

Amazing pub but the costumer services was not so great. We believe it was the manager/supervisor the problem. Bar staff and waiters were fine. When we arrived we didn’t book a table and the manager/supervisor told us we couldn’t sit down as we haven’t booked and that all the tables were reserved. However we then went to the website to book a seat and all time slots were available after 15 minutes of us arriving. We didn’t understand why he didn’t want our sale as there was 4 of us in the party. If it was a booking only pub that’s fine but he should have told us please have a look online and not dismiss us how he did.

Bitterly disappointed with my experience there. It took 25 mins for anyone to come to the table to ask for drinks and order. Starter came out luke warm and haphazardly placed on the plate. On the rare occasion someone came to the table we felt like a problem rather than a customer. Roast was ok. Vegetables were al dente and cauliflower was freezing.. they took this back and it was clearly scooped out and microwaved then plonked back into the small pot served in. At this point we asked for another drink, which never came. Eventually someone came to collect plates and we asked again for the drink and dessert menus. The drink came and nothing else...after another period of waiting we had enough and went to find someone to pay.. a server saw me waiting and did nothing until I asked to pay after having enough of waiting.. she marched to the bar, issued a bill to which I had to question the 2 drinks placed extra of which we recieved 1.. (so quick on the spot to put it on the bill but not deliver) She snatched it back.. demanded payment on the till and as soon as approved, marched off.. sarcastically I said I didn't want a receipt and the man who sat us apologised profusely, unfortunately too little too late. The pub was busy when we entered but not when leaving, either understaffed or unorganised... and clearly dines out of the fact it resides in a beautiful busy village and had shown in a film. Won't be coming back

I booked a Sunday lunch for a friend’s birthday and was really looking forward to a delicious roast. Sadly it was very disappointing. Good: The atmosphere is great and the staff were very friendly and they gave my friend a piece of cheesecake and sang her happy birthday which was very nice of them. Bad: Despite being friendly, the service wasn’t great. We kept being told they were very busy but as I had to book 2 weeks in advance and it’s a famous pub I assume Sundays are always busy so they should be better prepared. Most of the food was mediocre at best. The garlic mushrooms on toast starter was decent but the fried calamari was quite tasteless. One of us got the slow cooked beef rib which was decent but two of us got the roast trio and it was terrible. The piece of beef in the trio was so tough we couldn’t even cut it, the “roast” potatoes were more boiled than roasted, the Yorkshires were so overcooked they were hard and brittle and the whole meal was very bland. We spent over £200 for 3 of us and it was definitely not worth half that. We are staying with friends in Shere for a few days and had planned to go back for dinner but we’ll probably try somewhere else.

I absolutely can't fault the food. It was cooked beautifully and the portion sizes were fantastic, especially on the young eaters menu. I don't go many places these days where I actually couldn't have eaten another bite and for me, that's really important. The service on the other hand was somewhat lacking. I was stood for almost TWENTY minutes waiting to be shown to our table. The place was busy, they apologised. Less than ideal but I accepted it. The wait for the food was long, that was explained, we accepted it, not a problem. The sad fact is that we were completely let down by our waitress. She literally couldn't have looked or been any less interested in us or her job if she tried. She was simply miserable. She brought our starters out, didn't clear the plates. Brought our mains out and only took a couple of the starters plates that were in her way. We pushed want remained to the end of the table and that's where they stayed until a far more attentive waiter came along and cleared them. I was charged for a drink that I asked her for and didn't receive. When it came to settling up, we didn't leave a huge tip having spend £230 on food and drink and the look on her face was disbelief, like she thought she'd earned one. Disappointing that she'd put a bit of a dampner on an otherwise lovely meal out.

My only star is for the staff (albeit there were only about 3 of them) but couldn’t fault their attentiveness and professionalism. They were the only positive and tried to make the best of an extremely poor experience for us, which we realise wasn’t their fault. We arrived and it took around 15 minutes just to be seated as the poor woman behind the bar was seating people whilst also serving and taking food orders. When we got our menu’s, we had to ask 4 times if we could actually order food (we counted 4 times within the space of around 20 minutes that we got up to ask one of the waiters if we could please order). The food came within a reasonable time but was SO unbelievably shocking! The potatoes were really quite inedible and the rest was below average, cold and lacked flavour. We were given a fresh bowl of potatoes, having complained, which were fine but not particularly enjoyable. Unfortunately the two other parties in the same room as us (a couple and another family) had also complained about the meat (which we overheard had been refunded) and the potatoes which they had also found inedible, so we knew it wasn’t just us! They said they’d come for a wedding anniversary but wouldn’t be returning. We had been for a lovely walk and wanted to celebrate my mum’s birthday as a family and this was such an anticlimax and really not what we were expecting. Don’t normally leave reviews but we will never come back for food and certainly wouldn’t be recommending it.

Really delicious chicken and bacon ciabatta in a lovely pub. Apparently staff were new but it didn't show and they were charming despite it being a very busy period.

Haven’t visited this lovely, ancient pub for so many years since it became a Chef and Brewer and we had a truly delicious lunch today. Really good menu catering for a wide range of tastes. Food was very well presented, the beers and Aspalls cider were excellent and the staff so enthusiastic, friendly and diligent, working at a ferocious pace. Well worth the two hour walk and we are looking forward to returning on a regular basis from now on. Well done team.

The friendliest staff I’ve ever experienced in a Pub - another Pub in the village make you feel distinctly unwelcome. Beautiful location and definitely a place I will revisit.

Food was so tasty I will definitely have to go back. I had the lamb shank shepherds pie with a pint of Surrey drop locally brewed Ale 🍺 which was also very tasty. All followed up with a sticky toffee pudding to share 👌🏻

This place needs help and I hope they find it soon. It’s beautiful and iconic and has incredible atmosphere and this was our third or fourth visit overall but we haven’t been there in few years. We took our friends in and it was such a disappointment as the quality of service and food were very questionable, the only good thing on our table was the slow cooked beef from the roast and a surprisingly nice turkey. If the pub doesn’t have enough chefs or staff, cut the opening hours, not the quality, as this way you are losing your regulars as well as future business and it’s such a shame, especially with the contrast of what expectations people come with to this cute and famous pub and what they currently get.

Service was beyond appalling. Firstly we had booked a table and we were waiting 15minutes (timed) to be seated. In the end we sat ourselves down. A waiter did not approach us so we ordered at the bar a starter and main. The starter came out within 10mins, and 15mins later we had finished the starter (standard stuff). Then we waited 20mins for main and I asked the waitress we were ready for the main, she told me "it's just cooking". No one has taken the starter plates also or asked if we were fine/happy. Anyhow a further 30mins pass (50mins total now) and I said this isn't good enough what's going on. The barman checked with the kitchen and the order hadn't gone through to the kitchen. So the waitress lied/assumed and wasted our time. In the end we requested a full refund, we were told it would take 2 weeks to process on card. However, 2 weeks passes and nothing. I called the pub up multiple times no one answered, I emailed the pub multiple times and no one answered. I had to go through head office (chef and brewer to get the refund) in total it took 4weeks. This pub is run poorly, don't go, the service is awful, and when it goes wrong the service afterwards is worse.

We booked for lunch after a lovely day out for my husband’s birthday. We received a warm welcome from Mark. We had a seat in the window looking out to the pretty village & church. We ordered the sharing platter and steak sandwiches. The service was friendly, prompt and professional. Out waitress was attentive, as was Mark, both checked on us throughout our time there. The food was delicious too. The perfect stop off with the bonus of a pretty village to wander around before or after your visit to the pub/restaurant. I would recommend. We went out of our way to visit and were not disappointed.

We used Seafare for many years and were keen to try out the new Coopers fish and chips. The first couple of times was really nice and the service was friendly. Recently, we ordered two cod and chips. The service was very lack lustre, the fish was barely warm and worst of all, the chips were soggy and very gritty and nowhere near as nice as we had experienced before. It almost seems like they peaked too soon and it’s all down hill from now. Shame, as we had high hopes of having a good replacement for Seafare which we were sad to see go.

Went to try the new pizza offer on Monday night. 241 is an absolute steal for what are incredible pizzas. Very well thought out menu with the staples, with some very clever options. Great service from the whole team. Open mic night was an added bonus as well with some very talented people performing. Fantastic way to spend an evening.
