We were a little later than planned but we still received a warm welcome and our order was promptly taken. We both opted for rump steak and chips ... only about a 20 minute wait and two large plates arrived. Absolutely delicious meal - the steak was virtually melt in the mouth and the chips right up our street. Field mushroom and a huge tomato were also well cooked and accompanied the lunch. No room for pudding but we'll be back!

Second time staying here recently, my first stay was really positive, clean room with good facilities and the staff on were very friendly! Unfortunately my second stay was very different, I booked the same room with en-suite and was very upset to find out on arrival that I had been put in a room with no bathroom, just a very strange shower in the corner of the room with no curtain or privacy and was instructed to use a shared toilet down the corridor. The lovely gentleman who checked me in was very apologetic and went to speak to the manager, he then came up and informed me that she 'didn't like' me because I had changed my reservation date so had put me there. (This is an actual quote!) I never write negative reviews, especially to independent businesses but the next day I was told I wasn't allowed an email address for the owner or anyone except the manager. A gentleman staying saw all of this unfold and actually offered me his room (en-suite, which he had paid significantly less for). I didn't accept this of course. I did ask if I would be refunded for the difference I paid but I was told it wasn't possible. Such a bizarre experience, and a shame that the manager's issue tainted what is actually a really cosy and charming little hotel!

We stayed 3 nights in a double room. The rather cramped room needed cleaning. There were no door hooks, not a chair. The kettle was at knee height and had to be placed in front of the TV to access socket. The kettle had to be filled from a small glass from the vanity sink. The window wouldn't open. The shower drain was dirty. No response when we personally asked for help. I had to call on Sunday morning as we and others were blocked inside by vegetable delivery. No response to my ans message. No alternative out of hours contact number. I had to call the delivery company to send the driver back to help. Thank goodness it wasn't a medical or fire emergency. We have still had no response. Very disappointing.

Booked in advance for sunday lunch online with no mention that they were hosting a party The service was questionable, staff sat at the bar chatting when we arrived, no table set up for us, just told to 'sit where you like' The food looked ok when it came out and I thought it was my own fault that my dinner was cold as I was chatting but on leaving and commenting on the food everyone else had said their food was cold.It is difficult to under cook tenderstem broccoli but they managed that, and dinner is advertised as coming with cauliflower cheese which equated to one floret each served in shared dish which again was cold. We left without having dessert because as we were sat there staff started moving tables and chairs around for what was clearly a pre planned event and I don't mean simply re arranging chairs. They were literally carrying tables above people's heads whilst they were having their dinner,It is very clear now why the pub was so quiet. We certainly won't be returning

Honest review, however not a food review. We stayed at the Wellington Bank Holiday weekend to attend a festival in Southsea. This is a historic building, great location for exploring Southsea and Portsmouth, 10 min walk to Gunwharf. The rooms are adequate for what we wanted, clean and tidy on arrival. Very friendly staff to check us in. Double bed was comfy, tv and complimentary teas/coffees/biscuits etc. Shower and toilet clean. Very quiet area and slept well with window open. Was it the nicest room we’ve ever stayed in-no, was it the best shower in the world - no, did it do the job -yes 100%, value for money - 100%. Due to attending the festival we didn’t get to eat or drink here, but inside looked very charming and pretty garden area, we most definitely would have given it a go if time allowed. Would we stay here again- yes 100%.

A one* is an extremely excessive high score, given because beer and staff were pleasant enough. On a warm and sunny Sunday I was surprised that the pub was so quiet. I last used The Wellington some 30-40 years ago, when they offered a very good roast. Unfortunately, this no longer the case! We both chose the beef option and discovered that every element of the meal was incorrect and very poorly prepared. As an example, the beef was so cold it must have served directly from a fridge! I prefer a rare cut and my partner well done. In both cases we were unhappy as only 5% of the joint had change to brown. I can criticise every other aspect of the meal. My partner had already paid on ordering which included a 10% service charge. Cleanliness is also a major issue. Every service is tacky to the touch. My partner had used the toilet. However, her recommendation was to wait until we returned home, despite being in my my 70’s and needing the loo.

We ordered starters and main, served very quickly and professionally by Rose and Shani. The manager, Katie, periodically headed over to make sure everything was going smoothly. The food was amazing and plentiful. We didn’t finish it all, however; Katie offered complimentary ’doggy bags’ to take the tasty scran home. My compliments to Chef John and Dennis (I had to ask all their names due to the impressive food and service) for their excellent culinary skills. Absolutely shocking service, shocking meals. Myself and my brother had planned on taking my mum out for a birthday meal and decided to come here, I wish we hadn’t. We arrived, ordered drinks and meals and sat down. The two starters came out suspiciously quickly and had obviously been microwaved, my mum had a cold starter, served on a hot plate??! The mains took considerably longer. The barman was clearly very disinterested, when the mains came we were missing cutlery, there was no offer of sauces, he clearly couldn’t wait to get back to chatting to his friend, who was sat at the bar. Unfortunately, two of out of the three main meals were absolutely shocking. Both steaks with the meal were not cooked as asked at all, the “peppercorn sauce” was garlic aioli?! My brother’s steak was bright red when he asked for well done, my mum asked for medium, and her steak was also bright red, and bloody. My brothers steak was inedible. We asked for it to go back on the griddle as it was not cooked as asked, the barman took this away and placed it back on the table A few minutes later, with no apology, just stated sarcastically “ hope it’s better for you now”. Unfortunately , it was still bright red and my brother couldn’t eat it. When we spoke to the barman about this, he made it very obvious he couldn’t care less. My mum asked for the contact details of the owner so we could raise our concerns, and make the owner aware of our dissatisfaction at this very poor service, and we were abruptly told “ you can try, you ain’t gonna get anywhere” Absolutely shocking, over 80 pound wasted on an awful meal with awful service and our evening has been ruined. It’s no wonder the pub is constantly empty. AVOID

Booked for Christmas Day lunch. Not the cheapest and sadly, far from the best. Initially all seemed well; our table was ready, our drinks order was taken and filled quite quickly and the starters arrived, including a soup with a hair in it. This was followed by the main course which, for most was turkey. This had clearly been overcooked and one had to be replaced as it had become totally inedible. The roast potatoes were very large and over cooked, as were most of the vegetables. The only upside was that quantities were on the generous side, but quality would have been much preferred. Then we sat there for an hour before our sweets arrived. Needless to say, they were disappointing (and some people didn't bother to wait). The Christmas puddings had no flavour (and no detectable alcohol); the meringue dish was just a shop bought nest with some artificial cream on and the chocolate delice was not quite right. Only the cheeseboard looked imaginative. The serving staff seemed to be doing their best but clearly the kitchen couldn't cope and we were still finishing our food when the next (three hours later) diners started arriving. Overall, a very disappointing experience we shall not be repeating.

Recommended by others as excellent but stopped a bit short. Roasts are getting expensive these days so the quality and quantity becomes really important. Bill was not far short of £200, so we were ok to expect something really good. Lamb was given the thumbs up, chicken was generous but a bit dry, pork good and beef pretty average. Excellent potatoes and jugs of gravy, well done. Veg was very plain but generous, carrot rounds, red cabbage and broccoli but all just plain boiled; not coatings or seasonings made for a plain palate… Cauliflower cheese looked anemic but was surprisingly excellent. Tart the veg up, adjust the meats but keep the potatoes and gravy just as they were and it’s very very close!

One to avoid… After taking seats in this completely empty pub on a Saturday afternoon, there was some confusion around which was the right menu and then a conversation around dietary requirements. Staff member explained options were limited as the chef was new and they didn’t want to be overwhelmed. Having chosen some options to check, the chef came out from the kitchen to explain she couldn’t really do anything gluten free as there was no relevant stock and she was new. We opted to finish our drinks and go elsewhere, leaving the pub completely empty once more! This at least enabled the chef to not be overwhelmed I guess. It’s such a shame as this place was once a fabulous place to go, often packed with people. Looks like those days are gone. With such poor and lazy service, you can see why it’s empty.

Wanted to love this place as it has rave reviews but left really disappointed. I'll start with the positives which were the great location and the nice Christmas decor. Those in our party who had a meat roast also said the meat was delicious. However, unfortunately the negatives outweighed the positives for me! Firstly the service was really lacking, they also didn't have our booking despite me booking three weeks in advance, the restaurant was cold and we sat in scarves the whole time, they gave us literally four pieces of broccoli for three of us and no vegetarian gravy with the vegetable wellington (had to ask for some) and they didn't have one of the three or four dessert options. Disappointing and won't be back.

Positives: - Good location - Meat roasts were apparently very good - Nice decor Negatives: - Restaurant was chilly, we all sat in our scarves - They didn't have our booking despite me booking three weeks in advance - Service was lacking quite a lot - not the friendliest staff - No veggie gravy, had to ask for it - Incredibly small portions of veg, 4 small bits of broccoli for 3 of us (had to ask for more) - Didn't have one of the four dessert options Overall I think its pricey for what it is and don't really understand the rave reviews. I wouldn't recommend it.

Really disappointing Sunday roast experience a couple of weeks ago. It is at the higher price point and in the past year, the food quality and portions have reduced. The cauliflower cheese had barely any actual cheese & stuffing seemed like dry, pre-frozen bullets. Service has declined. Only 3 tables in when we arrived and took 15mins for our order to be taken, and only then because we went to bar and asked. Didn’t ask if we wanted condiments and no one asked during meal if it was ok. Drinks added to our bill that we didn’t have. Staff were polite but seemed inexperienced. This is the second bad meal here in past few months and sadly won’t be returning. A real shame as it used to be great.

Not impressed at all. Came back on the Friday night after a funeral to find the bar closed Retire to our room No milk for tea or coffee. The shower overflowed, the floors were dirty no carpet at side of bed. Asked the following morning for the addition of milk and coffee, to be advised the cleaner wasn’t in and would complete the requested task. At no time when I made the said request was I advise that a private function was taken place that evening. Only when we retuned early evening to have a meal and drinks did we find this out, therefore had to find another restaurant. Consequently on our eventual return to our room we had to endure the Booming from the disco below our room Even on any welcoming messages sent from The Wellington prior to my stay, about up and coming functions, I would have cancelled on gone else where. Disgusted and Disappointed

Shocking...walked out. Over an hours wait, food cold ??? All of it, sent it back, still cold. Staff said it was a bad day. It was. If I could leave no stars I would. Embarrassed as family visiting and should have been a treat.. and we weren't the only ones unhappy. Honestly not had such a bad experience before. Terrible.

The bed was clean but really small and old. No bedside table and the shower overflowed when using it. The blind didn’t pull down, all in all very poor. We left a day early and not sure what would have happened overnight if they’d been a problem as we contact anyone. We left a voicemail but haven’t had a reply

I recently had my baby shower at the Wellington. The day exceeded all expectations and was amazing all round. Tom was my first point of contact, he organised the catering and venue. He went above and beyond to meet my requirements and I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the door on the day. His service , charm and charisma with how he treated my friends and family was second to none. Rose was helping on the day, she was very helpful and delivered excellent service with a smile. I would definitely recommend hiring the Wellington for any occasion as you will be nothing but impressed. Thank you Tom , chef and Rose for such a lovely day and delicious food.

My wife and I initially just took shelter at The Wellington during a heavy shower expecting to meet up with our family for dinner at another venue. Katie our waitress made us very welcome and we got chatting over a drink. We decided to have something light to eat to keep us going. John the chef produced a brilliant wild mushroom soup followed by an excellent whitebait. I would highly recommend anyone traveling in the Old Portsmouth Area to give The Wellington a go.

Fantastic views, and the food was good. However, the first table we sat down at needed clearing. The waiter did this, but in spite of being asked didn't return to wipe the sticky, grubby table, or take away the dog bowl underneath. We moved to another table. It had already been cleared but not wiped. The place appears grubby, and the service lacklustre. This has been our go-to pub on our frequent visits to Portsmouth, but has been declining for a while and we won't be back.

Would have got 5 stars, but the accessible entrance wasn't working and had to get the attention of staff to help me get in to and out of the place. The staff were very helpful and apologetic.
