Thank you so much to Sam and the team for making our mum's 75th birthday celebration so special! Lovely food and fantastic service.

Waited over an hour for two meals. Understaffed at the bar and in the kitchen. Staff kept putting delays down to lack of staff. If you don’t have enough staff on a match day, don’t serve food. Won’t be coming back.

Apart from on match days place this pub really disappointing. The food is really no good whatsoever giving me some form of stomach illness after eating from there let alone the quality of it just didn’t exist at all. Its a pub so ofcourse i don’t expect anything special but this is below of that standard. I highly recommend not eating whatsoever and only grabbing a pint. Atleast the staff where decent about it and are friendly enough

We arrived in Portsmouth from Essex and googled somewhere to go for lunch and this pub came up (actually we had driven past in our way in). We walked from the budget Ibis. We came at lunch and ate a few bits from the starters menu. We had salt and pepper chicken, halloumi fries and katsu curry chips. We often choose these kind of things to share in different places and often they are average.. but these were fantastic - delicious, well presented and hot. Our 14 year old spotted the Sunday burger and was adement she wanted to try this for dinner the next day (we were on in the city for two nights). We kept our promise and last night we went for the burger. She had the Sunday burger, I had the tandoori burger and we shared half each. Both were tasty and unusual! My husband has salt and pepper chicken. He said the katsu curry sauce was yummy and his words were, "It was the best chain pub dinner he'd had in ages". The staff were really friendly. I thought the music was a bit loud, but it was Friday evening. We didn't manage to do all we wanted at the Historic dockyard so will be back. And we will certainly pay a visit again. Thank you!! 🙂

Went for a lunch club with one of my old friends and the food was lovely. The price was excellent for what you received and will defiantly be going back again soon

I use to come in here before Pompey games with my dad years ago & came in recently with my friend, she enjoyed it so I’m giving 5 stars

Visited here to attend a wake, the space set aside for us was big and comfortable and the food and drinks available were great

Scott and Becky Donnelly put together a wedding reception for my wife and I and we were amazed at the effort that they went to make our day very special. The room was lovely and the food excellent. We had a fabulous day and our friends and family thoroughly enjoyed it. The good Companion is a big friendly Pompey Pub with ample parking and easy access. Scott and Becky and their staff make you very welcome as they did us. As a wedding reception venue, we can't fault it and recommend it highly.

Came in today for a nice meal with my mum, was served by Jay and Sammy at the bar who was very plesent. Food was lovely and came out quickly. Very lovely place, will definitely be there again

Don't use the Green King app. Unfortunately, it's a great idea if staff take note, but they simply don't and then get sarcastic in front of others, saying it's quicker waiting at the bar to be served. It's a shame as a superb pub. Just one employee can ruin your visit.

Recently had lunch here. The food was very tasty and portions were more than enough!

Great friendly staff, warm welcome and always brilliant service. Dog friendly and good food. What could be better? This is always a first stop when we want to go out for a relaxed drink in a good atmosphere.

The staff at the pub are amazing, the atmosphere is great. My favourite food is the fish and chips with mushy peas Highly recommend!

Tried one of their new mocktail drinks, I questioned the flavour and was brushed off rather gruffly. Also the drink was mixed where I couldn't see what went into it, I don't think good bartenders do that.

What a fantastic afternoon/evening for my daughter’s 37th Birthday, food was fantastic and sorting the children out 1st was amazing especially as 17 people. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and made us feel at home, plus an extra bonus was putting the rugby 6 Nations on the tv for us….would recommend you all to everyone…thankyou ❤️

Our family’s been doing Pompey pre-match here for 16 years now, and we rock up every other Saturday and Tuesday knowing what we’ll get. The drinks are good, the food is good, it’s close to Fratton, and it’s always pleasant both in atmosphere and staff.

went to this pub for a bite to eat on wednesday evening, food took over an hour to come and chips weren’t cooked properly and i ordered a plain burger which came with toppings. customers within the pub were rude and overall felt very unwelcome, would not come back again. very disappointed. and very overpriced .

Went for a roast, couldn't eat the potatoes they were so hard I couldn't even cut them with a knife! Very bland and overpriced. Won't be going again.

First time visit for food..afraid it will be the last.bought 3 roast dinners which by the look of it were out of a microwave..not very hot and the roast spuds were made of concrete and i couldnt cut them..the meat was tender but veg was also very hard..didnt seem fresh at all..staff friendly and drinks were good...sorry for bad review on food but £15 per head is way too much..

For a festive meal and the money we payed not even a soft drink included . The food was very poor and didn’t look festive for Christmas at all. We were very disappointed with everything. Over 200 pounds for 4 meals was a disaster. I will never come back again.

Came in for breakfast with grinch can say was not pleased , breakfast was cold sausage looked anemic , when the grinch came round there was kids pulling him about meaning we couldn’t really get photos was told we got presents for the children and the presents got stolen so we didn’t get any £20 for 2 children no presents cold food very not happy , to top that off the waiteress was rude behind the bar when I questioned my bill price , can say I won’t be returning 😕 thank you to the staff that did try and help though 👏

We were meant to be there for our Christmas works meal but something went wrong and they didn't have our booking as Christmas meal so we just had the normal menu. Great value during the week but the pub was almost empty apart from us. Thanks to the staff for their patience waiting for us to order 😉

Not very happy with the roast dinner me and my friends had as mine had 2 hairs in it. And they did let me have a free drink cause of it but that wasn’t the point our potatoes were rock solid and it was just like warm so overall we will not be comming yo this pub again

After a three hour drive I was greeted by Hampshire's grumpiest barmaid. Welcome to Portsmouth. No wonder this place has a poor reputation. Will spend my money elsewhere next time.

Really lovely and well run pub. I get a little anxious in pubs, and this is one of the few I’ll go to, it has a lovely welcoming atmosphere. The landlords are regularly doing things , we attended the Halloween party which my children loved, and are back this month for breakfast with the Grinch. Family friendly, great food, also good for the football supporters. Definitely one of my favs! X

Visited family and had lunch. Nice food and really good service especially with the little kids.

Met by very friendly staff, ordered using the App which was easy. Food was reasonably quick and was freshly cooked and piping hot. We both had the Pie which was delicious. Staff checked during the meal if everything was okay. All in all, a pleasant midweek lunch.

Warning if you have food allergies or intolerances. We ordered mains and I specified dairy intolerance. (Limited options for me anyway as I prefer not to eat it took to sort my stomach out! Do not trust if you need to know what you are eating.

Typical Green King pub, as expected. but there was a bit of a meeting going on from an org named "Britain First". Googled it and it's one of those far-right orgs. Good if you want that kind of atmosphere while eating I guess.

Lovely family and dog friendly pub. kids love coming here as all staff interact and the food is great very welcoming service .

This is where they hold racist Britain first meetings. Avoid at all costs. Most certainly not friendly to anyone that isn't white British and over 50

What a disappointing experience. I ordered some carbonara but some Britain First fans confiscated it because pasta is foreign. Then they deported my waitress so I had no service.

Scott and the team are fab, been coming here for years and Scott has turned this place around. Never any problems and the entertainment is great. We always prefer to come here, so dog friendly and the grand kids love it here to

Pub was hosting a Britain First meeting so unwelcoming and a terrible vibe for anyone with 10 fingers and toes.

All staff are cheerful, helpful and welcoming. Food is hot, nicely presented, and is served quickly. Served by Sammy, who made sure everything was satisfactory.

Went for a beer and loads of racist Britain First helmets in there… walked out.

Have eaten at The Good Companion a few times, each time the standards and quality never reduces. The staff are very attentive, have met the landlord Scott a few times always polite and welcoming. Highly recommended

Typical Greene King pub. It has its share of locals and inquisitive visitors. Well run, efficient.

Good prices on the food, but had to wait quite a while to get our meal. It was worth it though. Nice layout, unfortunately very busy and noisy but worth a visit.

Excellent from start to finish from both front & back of house - attentive polite & great food . Visited Saturday lunchtime & Portsmouth were playing away so a bit quieter I would imagine 👍

Been here a number of times for pre football drinks. Standard football fare with plastic glasses. On the latest visit I ordered cheesy bbq chips for almost £6.00. The portion size was a complete joke and not worth any more than £1. Be warned for 12:30 ko games the pub opens at 10:00am but can’t serve alcohol until 11:00am. Full pub standing at the bar waiting means 20 to 30 minutes to get served!!

We enjoyed our meal 😋 Staff are very good 👍🏻 It was rather busy for a Tuesday night food was good. Katsu Chicken 🍗 rice 🍚 and chips 🍟. And Fish 🐠 and chips 😀. No photos as we ate too quickly. Haha. Will send pictures of Sunday carvery instead. DW.

Car parks always busy but average food and flat coke/pepsi - apart from the lady who was serving us who was ace. Will probably go back again though as the daughter loved it

Food was nice, we all had roast very reasonably priced! The staff very friendly, but a special shout out to waitress who served our table 12 at booking 1:45. Great service, very friendly even got a candle for my mums dessert and sang happy birthday, bless her, made my mums day 😊

Wasn’t expecting too much from a pub chain in terms of food but the food was really nice freshly cooked great menu and good value would highly recommend. Thanks to the chef. Great service too by the bar staff will be back

Although this pub is quite local to me, I don’t go in very often, I attended a private gathering with family and friends in a private hire area, although we did flow over into the main pub, my review is mostly about the buffet food that was laid on a met a young man called Bob who was bringing the food up from the kitchen. He was working very hard to ensure that food came out in quick succession with the hot food at the very end so everyone could enjoy both the hot food and cold food together. The food was wonderfully fresh. It wasn’t the type of occasion where I could take photos although I did manage to get one,The crisps in the bowls, you could tell that only just been opened, I don’t like it when you have one that has gone stale, sausage rolls were delicious chicken goujons and chips all freshly cooked and crispy, there was a wonderful cheese pickle on bread, potato wedges the range was very well picked out with a good assortment to suit everybody and plenty off it, well done good companion

3 meals between us, all were poor. Hunters chicken tasted of nothing in particular. Chilli chicken was rubbery. Burger looked like it had been run over and was well overdone. We did mention to the waitress that it was poor but we couldn’t be bothered to follow up further. Pity we got there hungry really.

We have been along to The Good Companion a few times now and have always had a really positive experience! A family friendly pub, deffo worth a visit!

Becky and her team are very welcoming. Food is always served quickly and the quality is great. Atmosphere is warm and friendly and because of this our young children love to come here. We will definitely be back 🙂

Booked for a Sunday 1730. To be told no Sunday lunches left….. then tried to order something else, they had none of that. Bit disappointing.

In all honesty I don't think there is anything wrong with this pub. For me it was a shame that there was no garden. Just concrete next to a very busy road. Stayed for 1 drink and left.

Popped in for a Sunday roast, turned out to be a huge disappointment, tasteless, cold turkey, beef was so rear it could of run away ( and I like pink beef ) roast potatoes were non existent, a few small crumpled blobs underneath well undercooked cauliflower cheese which had the most unusual taste, carrots were shrivelled up and dry, probably through reheating, new to the area and won't be returning , shame as its on our doorstep. Becky,Scott and all their team are so friendly and welcoming ther are 6 of us that meet up once a week and have been for approximately 18 months. We always have coffee/tea and cake deal or the lunch deal and are always happy with food and drinks. Also the facilities are very clean so would highly recommend to anyone .

Nice atmosphere friendly staff speedy service but losses stars for consistently serving food on a bed of too much salt.

Had a lovely good value Sunday roast there

Popped in for a sunday roast about 3.30 in the afternoon. Probably not the best time, as it seems the food may have been cooked much earlier and been waiting for us to arrive. Menu a bit sparce for sunday roasts, so we opted for the roast turkey. Not fresh cooked turkey as we thought, but something pressed and out of a packet or tin, at a guess. The roast potatoes ( with overcooked - burnt- edges ) had been kept warm for some time we thought, as were most of the vegetables. Bits of the broccoli were quite hard too. Carrots, cauli, peas and gravy great but got cold quick. Everything got cold quite quickly, and although there was quite a sizeable portion, but it was late in the day and even the plates were cold, subsequently the meal got cold quickly .... shame. Might have said it was good value for money had we been earlier, when all was fresh and hot. Beer was very good, as was the service.. Thanks to the staff. I think the whole experience needs a bit of a look at to improve. Sorry, not the most enjoyable meal we've ever had.

Lovely place, food is good and tasty. I had the hunters chicken and it was lovely and moist. The decor was cozy and clean, prices aren't bad. Would go back.

Stopped in while waiting for National Windscreen nearby to get a job done, they were so slow I had to venture out. Found this place on foot and glad I did! Good food at decent prices! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere! Will be back again when in the area!

Good value for money, friendly staff, tasty food.

Food was quick and amazing! The mango & lime tacos were my favourite and we will be back for them again soon! The staff are really friendly and welcoming.

Lunch out for mother's day, great food and staff went all out to ensure everyone had a good time. Well done
