Excellent from start to finish from both front & back of house - attentive polite & great food . Visited Saturday lunchtime & Portsmouth were playing away so a bit quieter I would imagine 👍

Manky was amazing had a great time, she was friendly and so helpful was a great time and will definitely come again. Food was great would definitely recommend

Been here a number of times for pre football drinks. Standard football fare with plastic glasses. On the latest visit I ordered cheesy bbq chips for almost £6.00. The portion size was a complete joke and not worth any more than £1. Be warned for 12:30 ko games the pub opens at 10:00am but can’t serve alcohol until 11:00am. Full pub standing at the bar waiting means 20 to 30 minutes to get served!!

Just a quick review to say a big thank you to the staff at the Good Companion. I had decent meal and in haste I managed to lose my glasses. We enjoyed our meal 😋 Staff are very good 👍🏻 It was rather busy for a Tuesday night food was good. Katsu Chicken 🍗 rice 🍚 and chips 🍟. And Fish 🐠 and chips 😀. No photos as we ate too quickly. Haha. Will send pictures of Sunday carvery instead. DW.

Car parks always busy but average food and flat coke/pepsi - apart from the lady who was serving us who was ace. Will probably go back again though as the daughter loved it

Food was nice, we all had roast very reasonably priced! The staff very friendly, but a special shout out to waitress who served our table 12 at booking 1:45. Great service, very friendly even got a candle for my mums dessert and sang happy birthday, bless her, made my mums day 😊

Wasn’t expecting too much from a pub chain in terms of food but the food was really nice freshly cooked great menu and good value would highly recommend. Thanks to the chef. Great service too by the bar staff will be back

Although this pub is quite local to me, I don’t go in very often, I attended a private gathering with family and friends in a private hire area, although we did flow over into the main pub, my review is mostly about the buffet food that was laid on a met a young man called Bob who was bringing the food up from the kitchen. He was working very hard to ensure that food came out in quick succession with the hot food at the very end so everyone could enjoy both the hot food and cold food together. The food was wonderfully fresh. It wasn’t the type of occasion where I could take photos although I did manage to get one,The crisps in the bowls, you could tell that only just been opened, I don’t like it when you have one that has gone stale, sausage rolls were delicious chicken goujons and chips all freshly cooked and crispy, there was a wonderful cheese pickle on bread, potato wedges the range was very well picked out with a good assortment to suit everybody and plenty off it, well done good companion

3 meals between us, all were poor. Hunters chicken tasted of nothing in particular. Chilli chicken was rubbery. Burger looked like it had been run over and was well overdone. We did mention to the waitress that it was poor but we couldn’t be bothered to follow up further. Pity we got there hungry really.

We have been along to The Good Companion a few times now and have always had a really positive experience! A family friendly pub, deffo worth a visit!

Becky and her team are very welcoming. Food is always served quickly and the quality is great. Atmosphere is warm and friendly and because of this our young children love to come here. We will definitely be back 🙂

In all honesty I don't think there is anything wrong with this pub. For me it was a shame that there was no garden. Just concrete next to a very busy road. Stayed for 1 drink and left.

Booked for a Sunday 1730. To be told no Sunday lunches left….. then tried to order something else, they had none of that. Bit disappointing.

Popped in for a Sunday roast, turned out to be a huge disappointment, tasteless, cold turkey, beef was so rear it could of run away ( and I like pink beef ) roast potatoes were non existent, a few small crumpled blobs underneath well undercooked cauliflower cheese which had the most unusual taste, carrots were shrivelled up and dry, probably through reheating, new to the area and won't be returning , shame as its on our doorstep. Becky,Scott and all their team are so friendly and welcoming ther are 6 of us that meet up once a week and have been for approximately 18 months. We always have coffee/tea and cake deal or the lunch deal and are always happy with food and drinks. Also the facilities are very clean so would highly recommend to anyone .

Nice atmosphere friendly staff speedy service but losses stars for consistently serving food on a bed of too much salt.

Had a lovely good value Sunday roast there

Popped in for a sunday roast about 3.30 in the afternoon. Probably not the best time, as it seems the food may have been cooked much earlier and been waiting for us to arrive. Menu a bit sparce for sunday roasts, so we opted for the roast turkey. Not fresh cooked turkey as we thought, but something pressed and out of a packet or tin, at a guess. The roast potatoes ( with overcooked - burnt- edges ) had been kept warm for some time we thought, as were most of the vegetables. Bits of the broccoli were quite hard too. Carrots, cauli, peas and gravy great but got cold quick. Everything got cold quite quickly, and although there was quite a sizeable portion, but it was late in the day and even the plates were cold, subsequently the meal got cold quickly .... shame. Might have said it was good value for money had we been earlier, when all was fresh and hot. Beer was very good, as was the service.. Thanks to the staff. I think the whole experience needs a bit of a look at to improve. Sorry, not the most enjoyable meal we've ever had.

Lovely place, food is good and tasty. I had the hunters chicken and it was lovely and moist. The decor was cozy and clean, prices aren't bad. Would go back.

Stopped in while waiting for National Windscreen nearby to get a job done, they were so slow I had to venture out. Found this place on foot and glad I did! Good food at decent prices! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere! Will be back again when in the area!

Good value for money, friendly staff, tasty food.

Food was quick and amazing! The mango & lime tacos were my favourite and we will be back for them again soon! The staff are really friendly and welcoming.

Good away supporters pub , drinks where reasonably priced, didn't have any food , so can't rate it really what I did see coming out the kitchen look tasty and well presented, only thing I could say was the mens toilet is watch yourself when washing and drying your hands getting hit by the door when people are trying to get in the toilets 🚻, they have plenty of car parking with 2 disabled bays

Pub food as expected. As pub food is pub food. But value for money is up there. It's nice for the price for sure, so cannot argue with it not being top tier as was such a good price. I had the Beyond Burger and they asked me if veggie or vegan - excellent as often I end up with vegan condiments and cheese etc despite preferring the regular. Have a senior menu at a good price for older folk who need smaller portions. Good deals and good selection of dishes for all the family. Good selection of lager. Peroni, Estrella, Madri, Birra Moretti as well as the standard staples. Excellent as I am a lager person. Last came here a few years ago and was good but more of a local. Definitely more chain vibes but more drink selection along with it, whilst retaining a good vibe. Above all else, the staff are absolutely lovely and we felt more than welcome despite the fact that they've been busy. All so friendly. Do be careful on the Greene King app as, when ordering just drinks, it doesn't create a ticket properly so the bar staff can't see it. Were super fast and helpful when we asked and not their fault. I only used it to order a sneaky round without being noticed by companions. Dog friendly which is rare, especially amongst chains. Modern and cute interior. I greatly appreciate there being a box of tampons etc in the loos for when you're cut short without one in your bag. Clean loos, especially despite there being loads of kids here. Must actually check/clean them, which is lacking in so many places. ETA they also have a good selection of spirits. Definitely coming back when I come back to pompey.

Suits me for when pompey playing at home,also think there is a new landlord doesn't seem to be as busy as it was,the prices have gone up unfortunately and still plastic glasses on match days so I think it's time for a change

Great pub with lovely food and staff

This was my first visit to the good companion and in all honesty It wasn't great! I ordered a burger which looked nice but half way through eating it i noticed the lettuce was brown and sloppy, the cider was nice and the atmosphere was OK.

Called in for pre match drinks as an away fan visiting nearby Fratton Park. Very busy, but excellent service and atmosphere, with a mixture of Portsmouth & Bolton fans. Well kept Green King beers on hand pump & usual range of lager & cider on draught. Bar food on offer, but didn't have any. Lots of outdoor seating & car parking. Good meeting point before a game.

Welcoming friendly staff, food was great (gammon and chips) very tasty and well priced . Neck oil IPA well worth a sample . Easily recommendable.

We had my mother in-law wake at the pub today and they did us proud the room and food was superb highly recommend. Thank you to the management and the lovely lady behind the bar

Just had a lovely (early) family Christmas meal for 14. Food was lovely staff are so friendly and couldn't do enough. Very good value for money at £20 a head for 3 courses. We love this pub and will be back soon.

Food was very good. Very tasty. Waiting time seemed quite quick. Could have done with a few more chips as the portion was a bit stingy. Everything seems much better managed than a few years ago. Waiting staff were brilliant and very friendly.

Having moved close to the area I wanted to find a local. However when buying a drink for you and your mate please be aware that they will still take your money even tho they pour a top shelf and you a pint and then say your to drunk to take the the drink so no serving of a pint but happly take money for a short

Update: This used to be my favourite place to have a night out. Sadly in the past half the year the food quality and also the quantity went sideways a lot and prices went sky high. You can check my photos uploaded here to see the 1st and the last meal we had. There are massive differences in between these. 😑😑😑 Delicious food, great staff and really friendly environment 😊🥂🍔 Will definitely be back and recommend to others 😋

Great night with family. 5 of us all enjoyed our food. All hot and well cooked. Mixed grill was one of the best. Eton mess and all other deserts thoroughly enjoyed. Service was exceptional and friendly. The only disappointment was 2 of the ales being down but the Abbots Ale was good. Very good value for money. Have been disappointed in the past but last night restored my faith in the Goodies and will be back.

The whole place is run down and in need of updating, especially the toilets. The restaurant was nearly empty. The food was mediocre at best and seemed to be mostly microwaved. We were quite rudely told that we shouldn't have ordered through the app because they were having system issues...even though there were signs everywhere saying to order through the app and none about any of these "issues". We were told 20 minutes after ordering that some of the items we had already paid for were unavailable. The food took ages to come and when it did we were missing items that we then had to go to the bar to ask for and wait a further 15 minutes for them to come.

Just been in for lunch, well the difference in portion size is laughable, I would hate to think what a pensioner fish & chips is!! The difference between two full price sizes was a joke. And the extra fries did not come as shown on the menu not a hint of rosemary.

I was here for a wake, in a room to the side of the main bar. Excellent food and lovely place to be, even though the circumstances were sad.

Becky is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met! Her patience and kindness towards all abilities is outstanding and no person could feel unwelcome at the pub! The dedication she puts into the events and decor is unmatched, every time I go in there there’s a new, perfectly put out display of the current holiday/event. The food and service is also amazing and efficient! If you’re looking for a friendly pub, with a great vibe, amazing staff, yummy food and somewhere to feel safe and unjudged, this is the place for you! (Ps. I really miss the hunters chicken toastie😭)

I now have been a patron of the companion for a few years now. My opinion is that the management, staff and other patrons are the most friendly, welcoming and genuine people you would like to meet

Although we never had anything to eat what we saw going to the other tables looked amazing and smelt even better. Sam behind the bar was very welcoming that it was like being served by an old friend certainly would recommend anyone to come and join in the atmosphere.
