Had a lovely good value Sunday roast there

Popped in for a sunday roast about 3.30 in the afternoon. Probably not the best time, as it seems the food may have been cooked much earlier and been waiting for us to arrive. Menu a bit sparce for sunday roasts, so we opted for the roast turkey. Not fresh cooked turkey as we thought, but something pressed and out of a packet or tin, at a guess. The roast potatoes ( with overcooked - burnt- edges ) had been kept warm for some time we thought, as were most of the vegetables. Bits of the broccoli were quite hard too. Carrots, cauli, peas and gravy great but got cold quick. Everything got cold quite quickly, and although there was quite a sizeable portion, but it was late in the day and even the plates were cold, subsequently the meal got cold quickly .... shame. Might have said it was good value for money had we been earlier, when all was fresh and hot. Beer was very good, as was the service.. Thanks to the staff. I think the whole experience needs a bit of a look at to improve. Sorry, not the most enjoyable meal we've ever had.

Lovely place, food is good and tasty. I had the hunters chicken and it was lovely and moist. The decor was cozy and clean, prices aren't bad. Would go back.

Stopped in while waiting for National Windscreen nearby to get a job done, they were so slow I had to venture out. Found this place on foot and glad I did! Good food at decent prices! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere! Will be back again when in the area!

Good value for money, friendly staff, tasty food.

Food was quick and amazing! The mango & lime tacos were my favourite and we will be back for them again soon! The staff are really friendly and welcoming.

Lunch out for mother's day, great food and staff went all out to ensure everyone had a good time. Well done

Good away supporters pub , drinks where reasonably priced, didn't have any food , so can't rate it really what I did see coming out the kitchen look tasty and well presented, only thing I could say was the mens toilet is watch yourself when washing and drying your hands getting hit by the door when people are trying to get in the toilets 🚻, they have plenty of car parking with 2 disabled bays

Pub food as expected. As pub food is pub food. But value for money is up there. It's nice for the price for sure, so cannot argue with it not being top tier as was such a good price. I had the Beyond Burger and they asked me if veggie or vegan - excellent as often I end up with vegan condiments and cheese etc despite preferring the regular. Have a senior menu at a good price for older folk who need smaller portions. Good deals and good selection of dishes for all the family. Good selection of lager. Peroni, Estrella, Madri, Birra Moretti as well as the standard staples. Excellent as I am a lager person. Last came here a few years ago and was good but more of a local. Definitely more chain vibes but more drink selection along with it, whilst retaining a good vibe. Above all else, the staff are absolutely lovely and we felt more than welcome despite the fact that they've been busy. All so friendly. Do be careful on the Greene King app as, when ordering just drinks, it doesn't create a ticket properly so the bar staff can't see it. Were super fast and helpful when we asked and not their fault. I only used it to order a sneaky round without being noticed by companions. Dog friendly which is rare, especially amongst chains. Modern and cute interior. I greatly appreciate there being a box of tampons etc in the loos for when you're cut short without one in your bag. Clean loos, especially despite there being loads of kids here. Must actually check/clean them, which is lacking in so many places. ETA they also have a good selection of spirits. Definitely coming back when I come back to pompey.

Suits me for when pompey playing at home,also think there is a new landlord doesn't seem to be as busy as it was,the prices have gone up unfortunately and still plastic glasses on match days so I think it's time for a change

This was my first visit to the good companion and in all honesty It wasn't great! I ordered a burger which looked nice but half way through eating it i noticed the lettuce was brown and sloppy, the cider was nice and the atmosphere was OK.

Called in for pre match drinks as an away fan visiting nearby Fratton Park. Very busy, but excellent service and atmosphere, with a mixture of Portsmouth & Bolton fans. Well kept Green King beers on hand pump & usual range of lager & cider on draught. Bar food on offer, but didn't have any. Lots of outdoor seating & car parking. Good meeting point before a game.

Welcoming friendly staff, food was great (gammon and chips) very tasty and well priced . Neck oil IPA well worth a sample . Easily recommendable.

We had my mother in-law wake at the pub today and they did us proud the room and food was superb highly recommend. Thank you to the management and the lovely lady behind the bar

Just had a lovely (early) family Christmas meal for 14. Food was lovely staff are so friendly and couldn't do enough. Very good value for money at £20 a head for 3 courses. We love this pub and will be back soon.

My pie was soggy from the microwave. Cheap but not cheerful.

Food was very good. Very tasty. Waiting time seemed quite quick. Could have done with a few more chips as the portion was a bit stingy. Everything seems much better managed than a few years ago. Waiting staff were brilliant and very friendly.

The Good Companion is a family friendly pub. It serves good food and the staff are friendly.

Having moved close to the area I wanted to find a local. However when buying a drink for you and your mate please be aware that they will still take your money even tho they pour a top shelf and you a pint and then say your to drunk to take the the drink so no serving of a pint but happly take money for a short

Was there today and had the Gammon and it was honestly the best gammon meal I've ever had, will definitely order again great value for money

It’s really great! Taste good and I’d love the gammon so so much ! With the fruity pineapple 😋 Love the atmosphere of the restaurant. And the staffs are very friendly. Will be back soon!

Update: This used to be my favourite place to have a night out. Sadly in the past half the year the food quality and also the quantity went sideways a lot and prices went sky high. You can check my photos uploaded here to see the 1st and the last meal we had. There are massive differences in between these. 😑😑😑 Delicious food, great staff and really friendly environment 😊🥂🍔 Will definitely be back and recommend to others 😋

Great night with family. 5 of us all enjoyed our food. All hot and well cooked. Mixed grill was one of the best. Eton mess and all other deserts thoroughly enjoyed. Service was exceptional and friendly. The only disappointment was 2 of the ales being down but the Abbots Ale was good. Very good value for money. Have been disappointed in the past but last night restored my faith in the Goodies and will be back.

The whole place is run down and in need of updating, especially the toilets. The restaurant was nearly empty. The food was mediocre at best and seemed to be mostly microwaved. We were quite rudely told that we shouldn't have ordered through the app because they were having system issues...even though there were signs everywhere saying to order through the app and none about any of these "issues". We were told 20 minutes after ordering that some of the items we had already paid for were unavailable. The food took ages to come and when it did we were missing items that we then had to go to the bar to ask for and wait a further 15 minutes for them to come.

Just been in for lunch, well the difference in portion size is laughable, I would hate to think what a pensioner fish & chips is!! The difference between two full price sizes was a joke. And the extra fries did not come as shown on the menu not a hint of rosemary.

I was here for a wake, in a room to the side of the main bar. Excellent food and lovely place to be, even though the circumstances were sad.

Becky is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met! Her patience and kindness towards all abilities is outstanding and no person could feel unwelcome at the pub! The dedication she puts into the events and decor is unmatched, every time I go in there there’s a new, perfectly put out display of the current holiday/event. The food and service is also amazing and efficient! If you’re looking for a friendly pub, with a great vibe, amazing staff, yummy food and somewhere to feel safe and unjudged, this is the place for you! (Ps. I really miss the hunters chicken toastie😭)

I now have been a patron of the companion for a few years now. My opinion is that the management, staff and other patrons are the most friendly, welcoming and genuine people you would like to meet

Although we never had anything to eat what we saw going to the other tables looked amazing and smelt even better. Sam behind the bar was very welcoming that it was like being served by an old friend certainly would recommend anyone to come and join in the atmosphere.

12 minutes longer walk from my usual local, but got served straight away instead of waiting 10 minutes to be served!

Enjoyed a meal at the Good Companion. Great service and welcoming staff. The Gammon Steak and the Chicken with bacon cheese meals were delicious and restored the energy of two weary travellers.

Wouldn't serve us because our mate had a physical Tanzanian ID, this is no reason to not serve us as it's a legal form of ID and was not a picture on his phone, just discrimination

We went to this establishment with one of our friends from Tanzania wouldn’t get served although he had his ID just because he wasn’t English he didn’t get service. Racist pub

Racist rude staff, wouldn’t serve because one our mates had a ID which isn’t from the uk even though it’s Eligible for use

I got refused service at this pub because my ID wasn’t English even though it was valid which I deem inadequate and slightly racist as I am over 18 and it is eligible anywhere and everywhere

Had the mushroom chilli (£10.29) which also had avocado in it. Too much chilli, which overpowered the ingredients so that one couldn't taste them properly. My friend was likewise unimpressed with the beetroot, sweet potato and butternut squash tart (£12.29), and commented on the hardness of the accompanying stuffing... However, our other companion was perfectly happy with his fish 'n' chips (£12.19)... Thank you (Good Companion) for the reply. Perhaps I should have had a word, but by the time it was served up I though 'best get on with it' as couldn't stay long in any case... In addition, a replacement would have resulted in a waste of food, unless I could have taken it for my local foxes...

As with most pubs like this it's bung it in the microwave food. My hunters chicken was literally cremated on the edges and rock hard so only the centre was edible. Mentioned it to staff, no response just cleared plates and walked off.

Was ok had a Sunday Roast. Frozen potatoes, frozen meat, veg ok. Wasn't the best meal. My husband had the Katsu curry which was delicious. I've eaten there before andbits normally nice, just not the best for a roast dinner. Other meals are good.

Can't visit Pompey, without stopping here. Great staff, great service, great beer, great atmosphere. Can't fault the place, and stand by my opening statement, just feel embarrassed that I visit the place with my brethren, and while accepting no responsibility for the state of the toilets, I apologise on their behalf... Either bring wellies, or visit when Wednesday aren't in town...

We had the absolute pleasure of holding a 70th Birthday Party for our Mum at The Good Companion & it was perfect! The function room was a great size, lovely furnishings & really cosy. We were able to decorate the room beforehand & the staff members couldn’t have been more helpful! We were really looked after, buffet food was outstanding & nothing was too much hassle…our Mum had a lovely time! So from The Orrell family we’d like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who made it happen - You know who you are! We will definitely be back & will recommend 😊🤍
