The Ship and Castle in Portsmouth

Food was amazing. Yorkshire pudding gets 1*, was hard as a rock. Rest of food 5*. Was a little confusing as a tourist, not clear on how ordering works. Very attractive staff members, especially curly haired blonde mate behind bar.

I balked when I saw Thai, Korean and Middle Eastern food on the pub menu. But our party was tired and we decided to eat here. What we are: - Fish and Chips - Seafood pie - Biscoff pie with ice cream PRO: - Suited to those visiting Mary Rose in Portsmouth as it caters to many tastes CON: - It’s always the food and it was just ok. SUMMARY: I know the trend is to do all other foods with pub food but it’s something I don’t want in my pubs. The food wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great.

We came for lunch with the family (4 adults, 6 kids), the service, food and sizes were awesome. Will be back and I suggest you visit.

Great Sunday Carvery. Staff and food are amazing, very dog friendly, can't do enough for you. Highly recommended if you're visiting Portsmouth.

Great pub and excellent food and service and good value.It is in an ideal location as well and away from the over priced Gunwharf quays complex.

A bit of a soleless place really. Didn't enjoy my time here so didn't stay long. Guinness was low quality.

Food(carvery)doesn't even rate a 1 star, it was disgusting 🫣 bar staff doing us a favour by serving us and the tv was so loud it hurt your head, we took a 83 yr old in there after a visit round the docks for his birthday, he even complained about the tv and he's deaf, never again shame because on the outside it looks inviting....

first time visiting in a couple of years. seems to have lost its buzz. fairly quiet on the evening we visited.

We missed the Calvary by 10mins 😭 But the meal we all had was delicious 😋.

Carvery is now till 6 pm on a Sunday, so popped in for one. Thumbs up really nice and well organised.

Lunchtime family meal, something for everyone with an excellent Vegan burger and choices.

I wanted wholemeal bread and was today only brown bread...the barman said its all the same.

We went in this lovely pub right by Portsmouth Harbour for a meal! Great pint of real ale, it does other drinks too! We had a lovely meal too which was Lamb Kofta Burger which was delicious! It was very quiet when we went in at lunchtime but was doing a party in the evening! The staff were friendly and the food arrived really quickly as well! Will be going back next time in Portsmouth!

Not hygienic having the gents toilet lights go off automatically whilst sitting on the loo! No way to get them back on again unless someone else opens the main toilet door and comes in!

Lovely place for lunch, pleasant staff place very clean, and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch big thumbs up. we will definitely visit when we go to Portsmouth again

Fantastic carvery on a Sunday but the interior is dated

A lovely find in Portsmouth. Welcoming, helpful and friendly staff along with quick service and a comfortable atmosphere.

A group of eight of us enjoyed a delicious festive menu at lunchtime today. The staff were amazing, the food delicious and the whole experience highly recommended. We will be returning.

Seems to have been a change of menu, much less variety and much more expensive (£25 for a Thai curry!), food we had was ok but much changed from the last time we visited. No salt, vinegar or sauces on the table or available unless asked for. Carvery was good but the person serving took ages to come out and then seemed very put out that he had to do something! I don’t think we will be coming back, which is a shame but I’ve always really liked this place.

Went for carvery, meat a little overcooked, Yorkshire bit too crispy couldn't cut it without it crumbling but overall not too bad .

Lovely on a cold day reseasonably priced and a lovely seat by the window. Beef stew was gorgeous 😍

Came here for a Sunday roast, I love their call up procedure so you are garenteed all the food you want! the service from the lady at the bar and the older man that took us to our seat was amazing... IF YOU ARE AFTER A CHILLED WELL RUN PUB, THIS IS THE ONE :)

Wanted belly pork but they didn't have it so was told the lamb shanks was good...it wasn't. Massively underdone chewy and fatty but the veg and mash was top notch.

Food is yummy. Meat melts in your mouth and veg is yummy too

I've been here for lunch a few times and the food is always very good. Can recommend the bacon, brie and cranberry toasted sandwich - and this place does the best chips!

We were really looking forward to dining here after reading the excellent reviews. Booked a table in advance over phone and informed staff one was vegetarian. We paid for 2 carvery’s at the bar and then told by the chef there was no vegetarian as it had not been ordered in. Asked to see manager who did not show his face , bar staff said he could not authorise a refund and we can have a free ice cream each. We went there specifically for the carvery not ice cream. On this basis we would not recommend and definitely won’t be returning.

Very convenient for Portsmouth historic docks, very tasty good value food and friendly staff.

We found it really nice perfect for bigger together as you pay as you order so none of that awkward splitting the bill carnage, food was surprisingly nice for a prepaid pub however with the belly pork and liver and bacon going down a treat Only down side is they don't trust you with condiments insisting on giving you those thimble sized cups of mayo that go in one dip!!!!

Despite the gray exterior the food was outstanding and it came out of the kitchen quickly. I really appreciated the chili sauce that came with the burger. Friendly staff. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal.

Manager was unbelievably rude.... Avoid at all costs. Far nicer pubs 50 meters away.

Yes very nice beer. Close to the Navy Museum did not try the food but it looked fine on the tables people were eating on.

Food orders close at 8pm fair enough tried to order at the bar at 19.45 couple in front order accepted me next sorry to late . Either it closes at 8pm or it doesn't

Sunday Carvery is great value but do book a table as it's very popular.

Decent vibes in here, came in with my mate from the navy about 5 and half weeks ago, I was a little stoned but had a good time, I drunk an orange juice then a lime & soder afterwards, my friend had a spiced rum & coke, we played a game of Liars Dice and sang songs & swapped war stories, sorry my mate got really drunk we had really good night in this amazing sailor pub.

Although we don’t live in Portsmouth we’ve eaten twice here and both times it’s been great, friendly staff and the food is great. The Sunday carvery certainly did the trick today, most enjoyable.

Very nice place with good beers just in front of the train, bus and ferry terminal at Portsmouth Harbour.

Took a large group pre-booked from our twin city in Germany for a Carvery experience. This was after the usual Carvery serving time and a group of around 30. The food was excellent and the service, the staff very helpful. Would thoroughly recommend.

Superb food home cooked, recommended, can get busy but good atmosphere. Ale on offer was a bit flat, Atlantic and pricey for drinks. But food was excellent!

The staff were actually lovely - we had just done family day at the navy base and wanted somewhere to have a nice drink. They were accomodating, sorted us with a table with a booth so I could lay my baby down and drinks were quick. However, the owner himself - very very rude. He was wondering around (which is good he actually does that as a lot of owners would leave the employees to it). However, took it upon himself to tell off the children I was looking after while their mum popped out. He made a few comments which we all just brushed off but while I was in the bathroom and they waited for me - I heard him tell them to ‘stop running around it’s not a playground’. These are two well behaved girls who were only sat at the table other than when I was in the bathroom and they were outside the door. He did not speak to myself or the two other adults and his approach was not just rude but so inappropriate to take it upon yourself to tell off someone else’s children. A polite word doesn’t go far - but yet again there was no need for a word - these girls were not being a hassle. We were going to order food but took our money somewhere else after the encounter. It may seem dramatic but these girls were speechless and felt uncomfortable being there because they were worried for being ‘told off’ again. However as said, bar staff were great and cocktails were a great price and tasted lovely.

Decent pub on the harbour front, wasn't overly busy so was able to drop in for a drink

Food was good, great pie (Chicken, Ham & Leek) sadly let down slightly by the red canlbbage which was far too sweet, and the lumpy mash. Service decent, not very busy. We were actually enjoying the peace and quiet until a very loud woman arrived with her family, left very shortly after that. Some people need to learn how to use their indoor voice.

Staff pleasant & nice atmosphere

Having met waitress Sarah she was very helpful, friendly and attentive. She made the difference to our enjoyment of a normal pub lunch into a pleasant experience. Excellent food , sausage and mash, egg, ham and chips. A great lunch!

Met up with friends. Great place for a drink and bite to eat. Good price, great service and very friendly. Music playlist was spot on.

The food is okay. But the dining room is kind of shabby, with a lot of furniture and other things piled up right next to the front door. Probably not the restaurant's fault, but during my visit a drunk wandered in off the street and was running his drunken face under the tap in the men's bathroom while I was trying to help my 7 year old son use the facilities. Probably the location but this place is a little rough and ready.

Great place with a great atmosphere, Food is tasty and cheap enough to be able to leave the place full under 20 pounds. The staff is friendly and energetic. Would come again.

I really enjoyed the food here. I'd never had halloumi fries before but they were delicious, as was the chicken katsu curry. My husband liked his squid, and my son was happy with his burger. The issue I have is that, when my husband ordered the lamb kebab, the bartender misheard him and ordered a lamb shank. When it was brought to the table we sent it back, and the woman who brought it to us (not the bartender) seemed really irritated as such a costly mistake. The bartender must have gotten a talking to because when she brought the rest of our order, she slammed it down on our table wordlessly and walked away. Then she came back with utensils, slammed those down, walked away again. I get that nobody likes to get chewed out, but come on. If we lived nearby that would have completely turned me off to this place and I wouldn't return.

The Ship and The Castle offers a pleasant dining experience with its picturesque harbor views, prompt service, and delicious fish and chips. It's worth a visit if you're in the area.

Having entered with my two colleagues (average age 60 yrs) around 1100 hrs, I enquired as to the pool table, wanting to have a couple of games, only go be told by the petulant teenager behind the bar that the house rule is no one can play pool until around 5pm to avoid kids playing . . . Ably supported by a giggling teen girl/waiting staff! Please carefully verify your Friday staff - these two lost you business!!

Good for friend gathering or enjoy tv sport. The price and quality is fair. The staff is nice (particularly there is a young man he often shows energy in serving customer). I gave three stars is about it's training (should be management). I ordered fish and chips and asked for vinegar. The girl gave me a bottle. A moment later she came to take away because they have only one. While I know that is not a fine dinning restaurant, I think thus can be handled differently. By the way I am not complaining the girl, as she was not impolite.

Very nice but noisy. Not the managers fault. Food was good. As I have a disability the staff brought our drinks to the table which was a nice touch.

Visited the ship and Castle today for mothers day, which we pre booked, hadn't been before, so glad we picked this place, not only do they welcome dogs but the food was AMAZING !!! we all had a carvery and thoroughly enjoyed it, absolutely delicious. All very well organised, the manager Sarah even got our dog Sam a bowl of water and some dog biscuits. My advice would be to book so you don't miss out. So nice to be in a pub where there isn't music blasting out so you can have a conversation and hear each other. Thank you all at The ship and Castle for a lovely mother's day treat

After visiting The Historic Dockyard were looking for somewhere to eat. Everything was closing for food. So glad it was, The Ship & Castle is the place to go. Just across the road. We were greeted by a lovely lady who was so helpful & attentive - to the right degree throughout. ❤️ Great food, wonderful staff. Child friendly. The place to go after a day out.

Amazing vegetarian (nut) Sunday roast!

One of the most favorite place which I frequently visit. Great fresh, homemade food, excellent service. Very friendly, sociable atmosphere. Most hospitable.Highly recommend.
