This is a friendly pub with lots of atmosphere. The Sunday lunch is served nicely with separate dishes of selected vegetables and trimmings. The manager Tess is cheeky and friendly and makes you feel very welcome. There is a selection of wines and a busy bar area where you can order snacks. Fabulous terrace South facing with lovely countryside views.

My wife and I were out walking the dog and we were on our way back to our accommodation when we were passed the Union Inn. We decided to go in for a beer as it is another of the dog friendly pubs we have discovered in the Windsor Area. My Wife looked at the menu whilst the beer was getting pulled.,made choices for both of us . The Sandwiches were large and tasty, with the biggest homemade chips I have ever seen.

We were very disappointed by this B&B which has self rated itself at 4 stars. Cleanliness was poor as was the state of repair. We decided not to have breakfast on both mornings as the bar area where it was served had not been cleaned from the night before. Lots of other failings which included no bedside reading lights, window blind fitted wrong way round and no daily room cleaning. My advice is avoid.

Popped in for a quick lunch with a friend. Had not been in this place for 38 years so was interested to take a look see. I had my stag night party here in April 1981 when Peter Osgood & Ian Hutchinson of Chelsea fame owned & ran it. I liked it then and was not disappointed this many years later - except that Hutch & Os are no longer there!

As I was staying here, we decided to eat here as well. turned out to be a good choice as the food was surprisingly good. The pork chop was generous, though I could have done with a few more prawns for starters. The 5 mini desserts was a novelty and very good. Good selection of lagers but limited on the choice of bitter. Very friendly and efficient staff

Have been to the Union Inn on a few occasions and have recommended to others - the food is good, honest pub fare, and portions are large so come hungry! I would recommend the burgers (the biggest plate of food around - come with chips, home made onion rings and side of coleslaw) I challenge you to get through it all and have room for dessert afterwards!Decor could do with updating but the staff are friendly and when we've been with friends before they still talk about how good the food was!

Being in old Windsor recently we decided to pop in to The Union for a drink at lunch time. We sat in the garden which had good comfortable furniture. Knowing the products of Windsor Brewery. I opted for a pint of their draught. What was given looked and tasted like it was from the village pond, totally undrinkable. A pint of Marlow Brewery Bombardier was then offered which was even worse. We were the only customers in the pub at mid-day, now we know why. We left.

My companion and I ate twice at this establishment.I had a Steak and Stilton Pie. This is an intriguing combination and I was uncertain how the chef would manage to blend these two very different tastes. The answer was with onions, that moderated the sharpness of the cheese and resulted in a very palatable dish. Hand-made chips, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, complemented the pie very well.On the second evening I had the beefburger. This was a hand-made patty, only lightly seasoned so the flavour of the meat wasn't overwhelmed. The patty was ever so slightly dry, so it's not a good idea to wolf it down. There are a few better burgers to be had but not many: highly rated. The burger was accompanied by an enormous onion ring in batter, more excellent chips and a good coleslaw. The only shortcoming was that the Ploughman's was not available so my companion had to make do with a cheese and ham snadwich. Even this was noteworthy for the generous thickness of the ham slices. It is not surprising that the Union Inn is popular with the locals

A very well run pub/hotel in a lovely part of Berkshire, far enough away from Windsor centre to avoid the air traffic noise. We booked a table for 5 in the restaurant and were served in a very timely fashion. The two menus were made available to us (bar food & restaurant) which gave us a great choice. The portions were more than adequate if not too large in some cases. The fish was very well presented and cooked to perfection. Went to dinner with family last week, it looked superb on-line but not so when you actually arrive at the pub! The website in fact bears no resemblance whatsoever to reality, apparently there are now new owners, but the 'old' website is still there and they haven't bothered to put up a new one of their own and to me the pub is not even average. Very basic restaurant, bare tables, paper napkins, not a lot to say really. I will mention a couple of the meals - my starter tiger prawns in a garlic and mushroom sauce. Prawns came shell on (not a problem) but were impossible to peel as it felt like they had been microwaved in their shells, by the time they had cooled a bit I attempted to peel them - difficult and the results were pretty tasteless. The bread to dip in the leftover sauce was already dunked into the sauce leaving me with just a soggy mess. My main of calves liver with bacon and mash and onion gravy. If the liver was calves then I will eat my hat it tasted and looked much more like lambs liver and cooked within an inch of totally burnt. The bacon didn't cut, it shattered! My partners grilled salmon was actually poached. The steak was deemed alright. The desserts we only risked two were ok. Sorry folks I cannot agree with other recent posts about this place, I cannot comment on the breakfast, accommodation or the bar food. Needless to say we will not be returning.

My burger beat me which is unusual, the meat fresh (a home made burger) lovely. My wife opted for the lighter omelette which was also a good size and full of goodies that she enjoyed. I booked a table in the Copper Restaurant for my birthday Sept.8th with my husband. I chose the Union Inn because of the lovely description on the website of "old beams and beautiful copper pots". The menu lookedreally lovely with scallops,Portuguese fish stew, lamb tagine and mushroom risotto and so on.I was uneasy when we arrived as the tables had a tablecloth a knife and fork and a paper serviette! There wasn't a side plate or knife, no salt or pepper and not even a candle or a flower to relieve the bareness of the table. There wasn't a copper pot in sight and the only relief on the bare white walls were very large modern art canvasses which did nothing to compliment an old beamed room. The menu when it arrived was a bigger shock it bore no resemblance to the website.I just looked at the waiter and he said"I know what you are going to say,it isn't the one on the website,we are going to change it". Feeling very fed up we chose a tomato and mozzarella cheese salad to start. The waiter said "sorry we haven't had a delivery today" On to the main course! I eat fish but not meat so the only fish available was scampi. The saute potatoes were almost black and the green beans were microwaved to within an inch of their lives and completely inedible. My husband had a pork chop which was not cooked and very fatty and had a pile of very greasy onions on the top. the chop was £13! When my husband asked for the wine list he was told there wasn't one only red ,white or pink wine! To be fair to the waiter he didn't charge us for the first course but I did tell him we would never return. I am sure if the owners see this review there will be a rush to change the website OR what is more likely they wouldn't bother just as they can't be bothered with their website or menu

After going to the Union Inn for a friends birthday party we decided to go back and check out the restaurant.Staff were friendly, nothing was too much trouble.A small but varied menu, I had Duck, my friend steak - both beautifully cooked and nicely presented. Portions are large and we shared a dessert. Final bill was what we expected from a pub restaurant. The restaurant is in an old part of the pub, beamed ceiling, crisp white table cloths, tables beautifully presented with flowers, candle, napkins etc - someone has realised that presentation and first impressions count. The restaurant filled up as the evening went by with regulars and guests staying in the hotel.Checked out the ladies - always a huge clue as to standards - they were spotlessly clean, lovely hand wash and hand lotion. The restaurant was fully booked for Mothers Day which says it all. They evidently do a great Sunday lunch - we checked the menu and plan to return and try it out as we want a local place, easy to get to and park to take friends and visitors to.Also has a large patio / outside eating terrace which would be nice for the summer months.I can honestly say our visit was not at all like previous reviews state.

We booked the restaurant on the recommendation of someone who had eaten the bar food and a look at their web site. The website looked great with boasts about their Albanian chef and the menu on the site looked exiting, with Chicken tagine, shellfish Cataplana, Shank of lamb etc. When we arrived we found out that the chef had left some time ago and had taken the menu with him. The new menu was very basic, typical pub type food. If we had not gone by cab we would have walked out. When the food arrived it was very well cooked, with huge quantities, I had the Pork chop with bubble and squeak which would have fed two. The service was more cafe than restaurant, but the waitress was very friendly and was trying to be helpful. Silly things like a dollop of Ketchup on the salt pot and no finger bowl or napkins for the shell on prawns let it down. Overall we made a good night of it considering the disappointment and the fact that there were only three tables of people in the room, but we will not be going back in a hurry.

My room/bedding was clean enough during my recent Xmas stay, but I couldn't have a shower as no hot water, and shower door was hanging off. My family and I only had breakfast during our stay, and the owner/manager's attitude was a disgrace, he was cooking/serving food in his shorts and tee shirt, made no effort to make small talk/eye contact with us. I have worked for a large hotel, and several pubs, and making your customers feel welcome is vital. It was a shame, as it is a lovely old building, all we needed was Sybill to come along and show him how to do it properly!

Room clean and comfortable however all three rooms that we had booked had problems with the showers either not working or freezing cold, one room had the shower door missing and another room had the door hanging off. Worst of all the owner/ manager hardly spoke only to say "do you want anything cooked" or nothing at all. The heating came on at 0830 needless to say the rooms were cold first thing in the morning, he took our money without a word of goodbye or "I hope you enjoyed your stay" definitely a no no for next year.

I was given a smart box voucher for Christmas for a meal for 2 by a friend .My husband and I went through you book of where we could use it and made our choice to go to the copper pot in old Windsor I looked the restruant up on the Internet and looked at the menu which looked good I took your advice by calling and booking in advance because it was a Saturday night. they took my booking and told me that was ok the day arrived and I couldn't remember what time it was so I called again they took ages to aswner the phone and the guy said Yeh come when you want didn't seem to know who I was , we arrived and no one had written the booking in the book for a Saturday night I thought the restruant would have been busy only 2 other people where there and no one else came in , We were given the menu nothing like what I had read on the Internet and was told if you didn't want that there was a pub menu board at the other end . We chose our starter I had the prawns and my husband had the pâté they arrived I had to send back the prawns they were under cooked grey looking and the smell was not nice Any cook should know that you NEVER serve raw prawns .They offered to cook them again and wasn't very happy that I asked for something different . We had steak for our main course we asked for it to be done med rare that came over cooked and tasteless by this time we really didn't want to go any further with the meal and chose not to have a pudding the meal voucher was for a 3 course meal and a glass of wine each we landed up paying for the wine and the water we paid and left very un happy. We felt the service was slow and the staff were not very pleasant . I really don't know how this run down pub/hotel ever got 4 rosette award being in a part of Windsor where sir elton John only lives up the road . After 35 minutes went to find out where food was advised sorry - be there in 10 minutes even checked with the chef. I said this would need this to be a take away lunch now and was told this was not a problem. 10 minutes later still no food - went to find out what was happening as had to go back to work only to be told they hadn't even started cooking!!! I must preface this review by saying that the chap running the inn is lovely, but he's fighting a losing battle. We arrived on a Friday night to find it deserted bar two diners. About ten overnight ears, in fact, were in residence by breakfast next day. Room OK. But sheets had marks on them, pillows poor, whole thing didn't feel fresh, somehow. Glasses and crockery not sparkling clean. Decor .....whoever did a whole building stucco effect is demented. Only one staff member on duty bar the chef....but then again, it was empty. He seemed a little vague at times, but when he revealed that his full time job was as bakery delivery man, and that he only got a few hours sleep ,it made sense. Dinner was tasty, but strange......pork belly with cannellini beans turned out to be covered in onion gravy into which a dollop of baked beans had been stirred ! Breakfast, if you ignored the stains on the placemats and the less than sparkling plates, was nice. Hmmm....boutique? Gastro? Four star? Not in a million years. Did I complain? I didn't have the heart, the guy was dead on his feet, and the business likewise.

Looking at the menu on the Union's website I booked a table for a special occasion. I was sold on the filet of beef Wellington. What a let down!! When I said I was looking forward to the beef Wellington I was told the menu had changed as that chef was no longer there. The tablecloth was soiled and had not been set for dinner. We had to ask for cutlery and napkins. One of our small party suggested we should go elsewhere but you can't get a table on a Saturday night at a decent restaurant in this area without booking ahead. What we ordered from the small menu was nice but not what we would have chosen. We were offered a choice of three red wines and chose the Shiraz which they then discovered they didn't have.It was a Saturday night but while we were there only one other table was occupied, by a single diner presumably a hotel guest, so there was no atmosphere whatsoever. Absolutely not where you would want to celebrate a special occasion. The one positive was the waitress who couldn't have been more pleasant and was very apologetic about everything.I subsequently wrote a letter of complaint which I handed to the manager/cook. He spoke not a word just took it from me. There was no courteous response let alone a smile. As I walked away I saw him tear it open. By then I almost expected not to get a reply which turned out to be the case.We won't be going again.

I had been looking to go back to the Union Inn as I had a fantastic experience in 2010. The website presents the chef and the menu was as I remembered it...I was on to a winner. What a disappointment. The building is impressive and the timber gives a lot of atmospher, unfortunately, it stops there. The tables and chairs are more wannabe restaurant than pub, though bad quality. There is velcro under the chairs that sticks to the ladies thights, so you have to add the cost of a pair to your evening as they are completely ruined. The service was really eager: we booked for 19:30 and felt really rushed. The lady was asking us every 30 secondes if we wanted to order, asking what drinks we wanted before we even had the wine list, it was almost harassment. We were out for a nice meal out with friends and it turned into a pressure test. Such attention can be acceptable if done with a smile and graciousness, but there were none. The food was ok, but nothing spectacular. The waitress even apologised by saying that they were changing the menu and would have more upmarket choices soon. Alarm bells, it means that we will pay even more for fancy names but unless the chef masters the basics, the food won't be any better. My prawn starter had 4 prawns and one was off. I asked for the calves liver to be medium and it was turned into a rubber slab and the mash was lumpy...very far from upmarket standards. The pudding offered and interesting taster plate of 5 miniature puddings. I was in heaven as I like everything. My plate arrived, well presented but only with 4 puddings. When I asked, I was told that I had 5 as there was some ice cream on the plate ( this was not part of the menu). The chef ran out of coffee éclairs and we had ice cream instead. Unacceptable as ice cream is usually offered anyway with puddings, and it boggles the mind that they would not buy enough quantities to cover all parts of the platter. The miniatures, were superstore mini pastries, without any taste: the strawberry tarte was an insult as it was just a strawberry perch on a mini tart case. A rip off!Maybe the bar menu is more the abilities of the chef. Stick to drinks and go with friends to generate your own atmosphere or chose one of the other great places in Windsor...we are waiting for a change of ownership to go back. And don't believe their website, the good chef has moved on....

It's almost impossible to give a straightforward review of the Union Inn. We've gone there on and off for fifteen years and over that time we'd have rated it from excellent to terrible with all shades in between. Some times we have enjoyed excellent food and service and felt a sense of occasion, other times it's been so bad that it becomes an entertainment in itself. The last couple of visits have been average. On it's day, The Copper Pot Restaurant as still showing on the website at the time of this review, boasted a good varied menu and a named chef. In fact both chef and menu were discontinued around a year ago and it may reflect a lack of interest by the owners that they have not updated the website to reflect the present offering. If you are being influenced by the website check with the restaurant first in case the online content has not been updated, especially if it still mentions Sammy the Algerian chef who likes to talk to the customers. So in order not to be disappointed think of The Union as a pub that serves food in a bar or restaurant setting. The last time my wife and I visited the restaurant we enjoyed our mains; we tend not to have the starters or puds because of previous experiences. The service though was disappointing. I had sea bass and my wife had liver and bacon. No-one else was in the restaurant so we didn't expect the waitress to ask “'oo's avin' the fish?” in a loud voice, it just lacks a bit of finesse. In fact there have been times when this particular waitress has made us feel like an unwelcome imposition when we sat down and expected to be served food. Generally though the bar staff are lovely and if you are served by them the whole experience will be different, so don't be put off!I need to pay tribute to a temporary manager called Stephen who came in for the second half of 2010 and transformed the customer experience. Stephen is an affable Irishman and has a knack for making customers feel important. The service in the restaurant improved and was consistently good, food was good too. Staff usually knew who had ordered what and did come round to see if everything was all right with the meal, something that didn't happen last visit. So sadly, now that Stephen has gone things appear to be sliding and I'm not sure if we'll be back to The Union any time soon.

Wow! Since a lovely young couple have recently taken over, this place has taken huge strides forward. It is more elegant and beautiful inside and has a great menu, with service to match. We went for Sunday lunch, which was to a very high standard. You can even order a bowl of meats and gravy for your dog, which our Spaniels devoured. It's worth booking ahead as it's popular!
